Abstract:The phase of the quantum-mechanical wave function can encode a topological structure with wide-ranging physical consequences, such as anomalous transport effects and the existence of edge states robust against perturbations. While this has been exhaustively demonstrated for electrons, properties associated with the elementary quasiparticles in magnetic materials are still underexplored. Here, we show theoretically and via inelastic neutron scattering experiments that the bulk ferromagnet Mn$_5$Ge$_3$ hosts gapped topological Dirac magnons. Although inversion symmetry prohibits a net Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in the unit cell, it is locally allowed and is responsible for the gap opening in the magnon spectrum. This gap is predicted and experimentally verified to close by rotating the magnetization away from the $c$-axis with an applied magnetic field. Hence, Mn$_5$Ge$_3$ realizes a gapped Dirac magnon material in three dimensions. Its tunability by chemical doping or by thin film nanostructuring defines an exciting new platform to explore and design topological magnons. More generally, our experimental route to verify and control the topological character of the magnons is applicable to bulk centrosymmetric hexagonal materials, which calls for systematic investigation.

Interaction-Stabilized Topological Magnon Insulator in Ferromagnets

Abstract:Condensed matter systems admit topological collective excitations above a trivial ground state, an example being Chern insulators formed by Dirac bosons with a gap at finite energies. However, in contrast to electrons, there is no particle-number conservation law for collective excitations, which gives rise to particle-number-nonconserving many-body interactions whose influence on single-particle topology is an open issue of fundamental interest in the field of topological quantum materials. Taking magnons in ferromagnets as an example, we uncover topological magnon insulators that are stabilized by interactions through opening Chern-insulating gaps in the magnon spectrum. This finding can be traced back to the fact that the particle-number nonconserving interactions break the effective time-reversal symmetry of the harmonic theory. Hence, magnon-magnon interactions are a source of topology that can introduce chiral edge states, whose chirality depends on the magnetization direction. Importantly, interactions do not necessarily cause detrimental damping but can give rise to topological magnons with exceptionally long lifetimes. We identify two mechanisms of interaction-induced topological phase transitions—one driven by an external field, the other by temperature—and show that they cause unconventional sign reversals of transverse transport signals, in particular, of the thermal Hall conductivity. We identify candidate materials where this many-body mechanism is expected to occur, such as the metal-organic kagome-lattice magnet Cu(1,3-benzenedicarboxylate), the van der Waals honeycomb-lattice magnet CrI3 , and the multiferroic kamiokite ( Fe2Mo3O8 ). Universal gapless Dirac cone and tunable topological states in (MnBi$_2$Te$_4$)$_m$(Bi$_2$Te$_3$)$_n$ heterostructures

Abstract:In the newly discovered magnetic topological insulator MnBi$_2$Te$_4$, both axion insulator state and quantized anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) have been observed by tuning the magnetic structure. The related (MnBi$_2$Te$_4$)$_m$(Bi$_2$Te$_3$)$_n$ heterostructures with increased tuning knobs, are predicted to be a more versatile platform for exotic topological states. Here, we report angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) studies on a series of the heterostructures (MnBi$_2$Te$_4$, MnBi$_4$Te$_7$ and MnBi$_6$Te$_{10}$). A universal gapless Dirac cone is observed at the MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ terminated (0001) surfaces in all systems. This is in sharp contrast to the expected gap from the original antiferromagnetic ground state, indicating an altered magnetic structure near the surface, possibly due to the surface termination. In the meantime, the electron band dispersion of the surface states, presumably dominated by the top surface, is found to be sensitive to different stackings of the underlying MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ and Bi$_2$Te$_3$ layers. Our results suggest the high tunability of both magnetic and electronic structures of the topological surface states in (MnBi$_2$Te$_4$)$_m$(Bi$_2$Te$_3$)$_n$ heterostructures, which is essential in realizing various novel topological states.

Rich Magnon Topology in Triangular Lattice Magnets

Abstract:The two-dimensional magnet has been an emerging and rapidly growing field. The nontrivial topological phenomenon in these materials is an attracting subject. Yet, the realization of such magnets exhibiting topological magnons remains a challenge. Here, employing the linear spin-wave theory and the first-principles calculations, we propose that variety of topological phases exist in the trian gular ferromagnet. These include magnon Chern insulators and high-order topological insulators. Interestingly, these topological states can coexist within a certain parameter space, leading to a hybrid topological state. We propose that these novel topological phases can be realized via atomic substitutions in MnSe 2 or MnTe 2 single-layers. The following detailed analysis suggests that non-uniform Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interactions are crucial in achieving topological magnons. Our work unveil a novel approach to obtaining non-trivial topological magnons in two-dimensional materials.

Abstract:From first principles computation, we propose hexagonal MnGe as a ferromagnetic Kagome candidate. As for three dimensional (3D) MnGe, the nearest, next-nearest and next-next-nearest magnetic exchange interaction parameters are respectively estimated to be 0.4 meV, 7.8 meV and 1.8 meV within the Heisenberg model while the calculated Curie temperature T c is approaching 115 K based on Monte Carlo (MC) simulation. As for two dimensional (2D) MnGe monolayer, the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) would bring in a tiny gap (~ 1.9 meV) at the Dirac nodes and quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect, characterized by the chiral edge states and nonzero Chern number (C = 1). Moreover, the Dirac points can be tuned to the fermi level E F by 1.5 electrons doping or 3.3% compressive biaxial strain. Besides, possible synthetic scheme as well as the mechanical, dynamical and thermal stability are confirmed for both bulk and monolayer MnGe. Thus our work provides a promising Kagome ferromagnet to study intriguing topological physics associated with Dirac fermions towards spintronics application.

Topological Spin Excitations in a Three-Dimensional Antiferromagnet

Abstract:Band topology, namely the global wavefunction structure that gives rise to the properties observed in the bulk and on the surface of crystalline materials, is currently a topic under intense investigation for both fundamental interest and its technological potential1–4. While topological band crossing in three dimensions was first studied for electrons in semimetals4–10, the underlying physical idea is not restricted to fermions11–15 and similar band structures of electromagnetic waves have been observed in artificial structures16. Fundamental bosonic excitations in real crystals, however, have not been observed to exhibit any counterparts. Here we use inelastic neutron scattering to reveal the presence of topological spin excitations (magnons) in a three-dimensional antiferromagnet, Cu3TeO6, which features a unique lattice of magnetic spin-1/2 Cu2+ ions17. Further to previous works on this system17,18, we find that the Cu2+ spins interact over a variety of distances, with the ninth-nearest-neighbour interaction being particularly strong. While the presence of topological magnon band crossing is independent of model details15, the far-reaching interactions suppress quantum fluctuations and make the magnon signals sharp and intense. Using accurate measurement and calculation, we visualize two magnon bands that cross at Dirac points protected by (approximate) U(1) spin-rotation symmetry. As a limiting case of topological nodal lines with Z2-monopole charges15,19, these Dirac points are new to the family of experimentally confirmed topological band structures. Our results render magnon systems a fertile ground for exploring novel band topology with neutron scattering, along with distinct observables in other related experiments. A neutron scattering study of the three-dimensional antiferromagnet Cu3TeO6 uncovers evidence for topological crossings in the magnon spectra of this system.
Studying magnon band topology through low-energy magnon excitations: role of anisotropic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction

Abstract:In this work, we study topological properties of magnons via creating spin excitations in both ferromagnets and antiferromagnets in presence of an external magnetic field on a two-dimensional square lattice. It is known that Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) plays an important role in coupling between different particle (spin excitation) sectors, here we consider an anisotropic DMI and ascertain the role of the anisotropy parameter in inducing topological phase transitions. While the scenario, for dealing with ferromagnets, albeit with isotropic DMI is established in literature, we have developed the formalism for studying magnon band topology for the antiferromagnetic case. The calculations for the ferromagnetic case are included to facilitate a comparison between the two magnetically ordered systems. Owing to the presence of a two-sublattice structure of an antiferromagnet, a larger number of magnon bands participate in deciding upon the topological properties. However, in both the cases, an extended trivial region is observed even with the DMI to be non-zero, which is surprising since the DMI is the origin of the finite Berry curvature in presence of external magnetic field. Furthermore, in an antiferromagnet, a smaller anisotropy is capable of inducing a gap-closing transition from a topological to a trivial phase compared to that for a ferromagnet. The nature of the phases in both the cases and the phase transitions therein are characterized by the band structure, presence (or absence) of the chiral edge modes observed in a semi-infinite nano-ribbon geometry, computation of the thermal Hall effect, etc. Moreover, the strength of the magnetic field is found to play a decisive role in controlling the critical point that demarcates various topological phases.

Magnon boundary states tailored by longitudinal spin-spin interactions and topology

Abstract:Since longitudinal spin-spin interaction is ubiquitous in magnetic materials, it is very interesting to explore the interplay between topology and longitudinal spin-spin interaction. Here, we examine the role of longitudinal spin-spin interaction on topological magnon excitations. Remarkably, even for single-magnon excitations, we discover topological edge states and defect edge states of magnon excitations in a dimerized Heisenberg XXZ chain and their topological properties can be distinguished via adiabatic quantum transport. We uncover topological phase transitions induced by longitudinal spin-spin interactions whose boundary is analytically obtained via the transfer matrix method. For multi-magnon excitations, even-magnon bound states are found to be always topologically trivial, but odd-magnon bound states may be topologically nontrivial due to the interplay between the transverse dimerization and the longitudinal spin-spin interaction. For two-dimensional spin systems, the longitudinal spin-spin interaction contributes to the coexistence of defect corner states, second-order topological corner states and first-order topological edge states. Our work opens an avenue for exploring topological magnon excitations and has potential applications in topological magnon devices.

Abstract:Topological magnons are emergent quantum spin excitations featured by magnon bands crossing linearly at the points dubbed nodes, analogous to fermions in topological electronic systems. Experimental realisation of topological magnons in three dimensions has not been reported so far. Here, by measuring spin excitations (magnons) of a three-dimensional antiferromagnet Cu3TeO6 with inelastic neutron scattering, we provide direct spectroscopic evidence for the coexistence of symmetry-protected Dirac and triply degenerate nodes, the latter involving three-component magnons beyond the Dirac-Weyl framework. Our theoretical calculations show that the observed topological magnon band structure can be well described by the linear-spin-wave theory based on a Hamiltonian dominated by the nearest-neighbour exchange interaction J(1). As such, we showcase Cu3TeO6 as an example system where Dirac and triply degenerate magnonic nodal excitations coexist, demonstrate an exotic topological state of matter, and provide a fresh ground to explore the topological properties in quantum materials.
Coexistence of large anomalous Hall effect and topological magnetic skyrmions in a Weyl nodal ring ferromagnet Mn5Ge3

Abstract:Topological magnetic materials are expected to show multiple transport responses because of their unusual bulk electronic topology in momentum space and topological spin texture in real space. However, such multiple topological properties-hosting materials are rare in nature. In this work, we reveal the coexistence of a large tunable anomalous Hall effect and topological magnetic skyrmions in a Weyl nodal ring ferromagnet Mn5Ge3, by using electrical transport and Lorentz transmission electronic microscope (TEM) measurements. It was found that the intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) can reach up to 979.7 S/cm with current along [120] and magnetic field along [001] of the Mn5Ge3 single crystals. Our theoretical calculations reveal that the large AHC is closely related with two Weyl nodal rings in band structure near the Fermi level and is strongly modified by the content of Ge. Moreover, our Lorentz-TEM images and micromagnetic simulation results, together with the sizable topological Hall effect clearly point to the robust formation of magnetic skyrmions over a wide temperature-magnetic field region. These results prove Mn5Ge3 as a rare magnetic topological nodal-line semimetal with great significance to explore novel multiple topological phenomena, which facilitates the development of spintronics.

Abstract:The layered MnBi2nTe3n+1 family represents the first intrinsic antiferromagnetic (AFM) topological insulator (protected by a combination symmetry S) ever discovered, providing an ideal platform to explore novel areas of physics such as the quantum anomalous Hall effect at elevated temperature and axion electrodynamics. Some of the recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments on this family have revealed that all terminations exhibit (nearly) gapless topological surface states (TSSs) in the AFM state. The gapless behavior is inconsistent with the theoretical expectation, as the surfaces being studied are S-breaking and shall therefore open a gap. Here we explain this curious paradox using a surface-bulk band hybridization picture. Combining circular dichroism ARPES and first-principles calculations on MnBi6Te10, we prove that gaplike features are induced through hybridization between TSSs and certain bulk bands with Rashba character. The observed (nearly) gapless features are consistently reproduced by tight-binding simulations where TSSs are coupled to a pair of Rashba-split bands (RSBs). The Dirac-cone-like spectral features actually originate from the RSBs. Our findings highlight the role of band hybridization, superior to magnetism in this case, in shaping the general surface band structure in this family of magnetic topological materials.

Photoinduced Topological Phase Transitions in Topological Magnon Insulators

Abstract:Topological magnon insulators are the bosonic analogs of electronic topological insulators. They are manifested in magnetic materials with topologically nontrivial magnon bands as realized experimentally in a quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) kagome ferromagnet Cu(1-3, bdc), and they also possess protected magnon edge modes. These topological magnetic materials can transport heat as well as spin currents, hence they can be useful for spintronic applications. Moreover, as magnons are charge-neutral spin-${\bf 1}$ bosonic quasiparticles with a magnetic dipole moment, topological magnon materials can also interact with electromagnetic fields through the Aharonov-Casher effect. In this report, we study photoinduced topological phase transitions in intrinsic topological magnon insulators in the kagomé ferromagnets. Using magnonic Floquet-Bloch theory, we show that by varying the light intensity, periodically driven intrinsic topological magnetic materials can be manipulated into different topological phases with different sign of the Berry curvatures and the thermal Hall conductivity. We further show that, under certain conditions, periodically driven gapped topological magnon insulators can also be tuned to synthetic gapless topological magnon semimetals with Dirac-Weyl magnon cones. We envision that this work will pave the way for interesting new potential practical applications in topological magnetic materials

Abstract:Topological magnets are a new family of quantum materials providing great potential to realize emergent phenomena, such as quantum anomalous Hall effect and axion-insulator state. Here we present our discovery that stoichiometric ferromagnet MnBi8Te13 with natural heterostructure MnBi2Te4-(Bi2Te3)3 is an unprecedented half-magnetic topological insulator, with the magnetization existing at the MnBi2Te4 surface but not at the opposite surface terminated by triple Bi2Te3 layers. Our angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements unveil a massive Dirac gap at the MnBi2Te4 surface, and gapless Dirac cone on the other side. Remarkably, the Dirac gap (~28 meV) at MnBi2Te4 surface decreases monotonically with increasing temperature and closes right at the Curie temperature, thereby representing the first smoking-gun spectroscopic evidence of magnetization-induced topological surface gap among all known magnetic topological materials. We further demonstrate theoretically that the half-magnetic topological insulator is desirable to realize the half-quantized surface anomalous Hall effect, which serves as a direct proof of the general concept of axion electrodynamics in condensed matter systems.
Magnetization-tuned topological quantum phase transition in MnBi2Te4 devices

Abstract:Recently, the intrinsic magnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4 has attracted enormous research interest due to the great success in realizing exotic topological quantum states, such as the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE), axion insulator state, high-Chern-number and high-temperature Chern insulator states. One key issue in this field is to effectively manipulate these states and control topological phase transitions. Here, by systematic angle-dependent transport measurements, we reveal a magnetization-tuned topological quantum phase transition from Chern insulator to magnetic insulator with gapped Dirac surface states in MnBi2Te4 devices. Specifically, as the magnetic field is tilted away from the out-of-plane direction by around 40-60 degrees, the Hall resistance deviates from the quantization value and a colossal, anisotropic magnetoresistance is detected. The theoretical analyses based on modified Landauer-Buttiker formalism show that the field-tilt-driven switching from ferromagnetic state to canted antiferromagnetic state induces a topological quantum phase transition from Chern insulator to magnetic insulator with gapped Dirac surface states in MnBi2Te4 devices. Our work provides an efficient means for modulating topological quantum states and topological quantum phase transitions.
Topological Magnons on the Ferromagnetic Zigzag Lattice

Abstract:Motivated by the experimental identification of magnetic compounds consisting of zigzag chains, we analyze the band structure topology of magnons in ferromagnets on a zigzag lattice. We account for the general lattice geometry by including spatially anisotropic Heisenberg exchange interactions and by Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction on inversion asymmetric bonds. Within the linear spin-wave theory, we find two magnon branches, whose band structure topology (i.e., Chern numbers) we map out in a comprehensive phase diagram. Notably, besides topologically trivial and gapless phases, we identify topologically nontrivial phases that support chiral edge magnons. We show that these edge states are robust against elastic defect scattering.

Topological superconductivity mediated by magnons of helical magnetic states

Abstract:We recently showed that spin fluctuations of noncoplanar magnetic states can induce topological superconductivity in an adjacent normal metal [Mæland et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 130, 156002 (2023)]. The noncolinear nature of the spins was found to be essential for this result, while the necessity of noncoplanar spins was unclear. In this paper we show that magnons in coplanar, noncolinear magnetic states can mediate topological superconductivity in a normal metal. Two models of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction are studied to illustrate the need for a sufficiently complicated Hamiltonian describing the magnetic insulator. The Hamiltonian, in particular the specific form of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, affects the magnons and by extension the effective electron-electron interaction in the normal metal. Symmetry arguments are applied to complement this discussion. We solve a linearized gap equation in the case of weak-coupling superconductivity. The result is a time-reversal-symmetric topological superconductor, as confirmed by calculating the topological invariant. In analogy with magnon-mediated superconductivity from antiferromagnets, Umklapp scattering enhances the critical temperature of superconductivity for certain Fermi momenta.

Abstract:We study the topological properties of magnon excitations in three-dimensional antiferromagnets, where the ground state configuration is invariant under time reversal followed by space inversion (PT symmetry). We prove that Dirac points and nodal lines, the former being the limiting case of the latter, are the generic forms of symmetry-protected band crossings between magnon branches. As a concrete example, we study a Heisenberg spin model for a "spin-web" compound, Cu_{3}TeO_{6}, and show the presence of the magnon Dirac points assuming a collinear magnetic structure. Upon turning on symmetry-allowed Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interactions, which introduce a small noncollinearity in the ground state configuration, we find that the Dirac points expand into nodal lines with nontrivial Z_{2}-topological charge, a new type of nodal line not predicted in any materials so far.
Large bandgap quantum anomalous hall insulator in a designer ferromagnet-topological insulator-ferromagnet heterostructure

Abstract:Combining magnetism and nontrivial band topology gives rise to quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulators and exotic quantum phases such as the QAH effect where current flows without dissipation along quantized edge states. Inducing magnetic order in topological insulators via proximity to a magnetic material offers a promising pathway towards achieving QAH effect at high temperature for lossless transport applications. One promising architecture involves a sandwich structure comprising two single layers of MnBi2Te4 (a 2D ferromagnetic insulator) with ultra-thin Bi2Te3 in the middle, and is predicted to yield a robust QAH insulator phase with a bandgap well above thermal energy at room temperature (25 meV). Here we demonstrate the growth of a 1SL MnBi2Te4 / 4QL Bi2Te3 /1SL MnBi2Te4 heterostructure via molecular beam epitaxy, and probe the electronic structure using angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. We observe strong hexagonally warped massive Dirac Fermions and a bandgap of 75 meV. The magnetic origin of the gap is confirmed by the observation of broken time reversal symmetry and the exchange-Rashba effect, in excellent agreement with density functional theory calculations. These findings provide insights into magnetic proximity effects in topological insulators, that will move lossless transport in topological insulators towards higher temperature.

Abstract:The escalating research in the field of topology necessitates an understanding of the underlying rich physics behind the materials possessing unique features of non-trivial topology in both electronic and phononic states. Due to the interaction between electronic quasiparticles and spin degrees of freedom, the realization of magnetic topological materials has opened up a new frontier with unusual topological phases, however, these are rarely reported alongside phononic quasiparticle excitations. In this work, by virtue of first principles calculations and symmetry analysis, the intermetallic ferromagnetic compounds MnGaGe and MnZnSb with the coexistence of exceptional topological features in the electronic and phononic states are proposed. These compounds host nodal surface on k y = π plane in bulk Brillouin zone (BZ) in the electronic and phononic spectra protected by the combination of time-reversal symmetry and nonsymmorphic two-fold screw-rotation symmetry. In the former case, spin-polarized nodal surface is present in the majority and minority spin channels and found to be robust to ground-state magnetic polarization. The presence of nodal line features is analyzed in both the quasiparticle spectra, whose non-trivial nature is confirmed by the Berry phase calculation. The incorporation of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in the electron spectra introduces distinctive characteristics in the transport properties, facilitating the emergence of anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) by means of Berry curvature (BC) in both bulk and monolayer. Furthermore, the monolayer has been proposed as a two-terminal device model to investigate the quantum transport properties using the non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) approach. This superlative combination of observations and modeling sets the path for a greater level of insight into the behavior and aspects of topological materials at the atomic scale.

Abstract:We theoretically study the interplay between bulk Weyl electrons and magnetic topological defects, including magnetic domains, domain walls, and $\mathbb{Z}_6$ vortex lines, in the antiferromagnetic Weyl semimetals \mnsn\ and Mn$_3$Ge with negative vector chirality. We argue that these materials possess a hierarchy of energies scales which allows a description of the spin structure and spin dynamics using a XY model with $\mathbb{Z}_6$ anisotropy. We propose a dynamical equation of motion for the XY order parameter, which implies the presence of $\mathbb{Z}_6$ vortex lines, the double-domain pattern in the presence of magnetic fields, and the ability to control domains with current. We also introduce a minimal electronic model which allows efficient calculation of the electronic structure in the antiferromagnetic configuration, unveiling Fermi arcs at domain walls, and sharp quasi-bound states at $\mathbb{Z}_6$ vortices. Moreover, we have shown how these materials may allow electronic-based imaging of antiferromagnetic microstructure, and propose a possible device based on domain-dependent anomalous Hall effect.
