Abstract:The pickup process of newly ionized hydrogen (H) from the Martian extended exosphere represents an important H + escape channel on Mars. It is generally believed that interplanetary (IP) shocks can accelerate the pickup ions and, in turn, affect the pickup process. However, the underlying processes inherent to the acceleration are not yet fully understood. Here, we concentrate on the dynamic processes involved in acceleration arising from IP shock compression. We examine two typical IP shock events characterized by a sudden increase in the average energy of upstream H + pickup ions across the shock. The H + pickup ions continuously enter the field of view of Supra-Thermal And Thermal Ion Composition or Solar Wind Ion Analyzer on board the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN spacecraft in a narrow angular range. Moreover, they correspond to a similar part of their respective ring distributions in velocity space. By comparing measured and theoretical H + pickup ion energies, we attribute the more energetic H + pickup ions to the enhanced convection electric field acceleration caused by the shock compression. An increase in the guiding center drift speed across the shock implies a higher escape rate of the H + pickup ions. Furthermore, the pitch-angle scattering could facilitate the escape of the higher energy H + pickup ions from Mars. The results may shed light on the understanding of the energization and escape of planetary pickup ions in the solar system.

Abstract:The distribution of magnetic energy across scales, represented by the turbulence spectrum, provides insights into magnetic field dynamics in astrophysical and space plasma. While the Earth's magnetosheath exhibits a conventional two-slope spectrum, the Martian magnetosheath often displays a prominent plateau-like spectrum. However, the underlying physical mechanism remains unresolved. Based on MAVEN observations, we present appealing evidence of pickup ions (PUIs) modulating the plateau-like spectrum through proton cyclotron waves (PCWs). PCWs, driven by unstable pickup H + ion distributions, significantly influence the formation of plateau-like spectra. Both case and statistical studies suggest that the spectral evolution is affected by the relative abundance of pickup O + ions. A substantial presence of pickup O + ions can suppress PCWs driven by pickup H + ions, resulting in a decline in the slope of the plateau spectrum. Particle-in-cell simulations confirm the role of PUI-modulated PCWs in the plateau-range energy injection. Our results provide new insight into the impact of PUIs on magnetic turbulence evolution and associated energy transfer processes in space and astrophysical plasma.

In Situ Observation of Energetic Pickup Oxygen Ions Upstream from the Martian Bow Shock: a Case Study

Abstract:The O atoms in the Martian exosphere can be ionized by photoionization, charge exchange, or electron impact. The newborn O+ ions are immediately picked up by the solar wind electromagnetic fields, and are then accelerated by the convection electric field. They are called pickup O+ ions. During 08 :54 :00-10:24:00 UT on 2018 November 17, and Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) observed persistent pickup O+ population with energies of similar to 30 keV. They correspond to precipitating O+ ions coming from the upstream solar wind. In phase space, they are located near the middle phase of partial ring distribution with an initial velocity (i. e., near the maximum energy of the partial ring distribution). Our analysis suggests that these precipitating energetic O+ can overcome the electrostatic bow shock potential and proceed downstream. Then, they are subject to the enhanced magnetic field in the magnetosheath. The results will help better understand the generation and the motion trajectories of energetic O+ ions at Mars.

Abstract:Magnetosonic waves are an important medium for energy transfer in collisionless space plasma. Magnetosonic waves have been widely investigated in the upstream of the bow shock at Mars. These waves are believed to originate from pickup ions or reflected particles. By utilizing MAVEN spacecraft data, we have observed the occurrence of quasi-perpendicularly propagating magnetosonic emissions near the proton gyrofrequency in the Martian magnetotail region. These plasma waves are associated with a significant enhancement of proton and oxygen flux. The excited magnetosonic waves could possibly heat the protons through resonance and facilitate the ionospheric plasma escape. Our results could be helpful to better understand the Mars' magnetospheric dynamics and offer insights into possible energy redistribution between waves and plasma in the Martian nightside magnetosphere.

Abstract:The Mars Ion and Neutral Particle Analyzer (MINPA) is one of the three scientific instruments onboard the Tianwen-1 orbiter to investigate the Martian space environment. During Tianwen-1's transfer orbit to Mars, the MINPA was switched on to measure the solar wind ions. Here, we present the first results of the MINPA observations in the solar wind. During cruise, nearly half of the MINPA ion field-of-view (FOV) was blocked by the lander capsule; thus only the solar-wind ions with azimuthal speeds pointing towards the unblocked FOV sectors could be detected. We perform a detailed comparison of the MINPA's solar wind observations with data from Earth-based missions when MINPA reached its count-rate peak, finding a general consistency of the ion moments between them. The blocking effect due to the lander is evaluated quantitatively under varying solar-wind velocity conditions. Despite the blocking effect, the MINPA's solar wind measurements during the transfer orbit suggest a good performance.

Abstract:The Mars Orbiter MAGnetometer (MOMAG) is a scientific instrument onboard the orbiter of China's first mission for Mars - Tianwen-1. Since November 13, 2021, it has been recording magnetic field data from the solar wind to the magnetic pile-up region surrounding Mars. Here we present its in-flight performance and first science results, based on its first one and one-half months' data. Comparing these early MOMAG observations to the magnetic field data in the solar wind from NASA's Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) mission, we report that the MOMAG magnetic field data are at the same level in magnitude, and describe the same magnetic structures with similar variations in three components. We recognize 158 clear bow shock (BS) crossings in these MOMAG data; their locations match well statistically with the modeled average BS. We also identify and compare five pairs of datasets collected when Tianwen-1's orbiter and the MAVEN probe made simultaneous BS crossings. These BS crossings confirm the global shape of modeled BS, as well as the south-north asymmetry of the Martian BS. Two cases presented in this paper suggest that the BS is probably more dynamic at flank than near the nose. So far, MOMAG performs well, and provides accurate magnetic field vectors. MOMAG is continuously scanning the magnetic field surrounding Mars. Data from MOMAG's measurements complement data from MAVEN and will undoubt edly advance our understanding of the plasma environment of Mars.

Abstract:Heavy cold ions at Mars are gravitationally bound to the planet unless some process provides energy to them. Observations show that cold ( 1 cm−3) O+/O2+ ions with bulk velocities equal to energies ∼1 keV can reach deep into the nightside Martian magnetosheath. These ions are co‐located with a change of the sign of the sunward component of the magnetic field. This magnetic field topology implies the persistence of a localized planetary ions escape channel associated with draped magnetic field lines that are convecting tailward. The observed ion populations propagate approximately in the same direction as surrounding magnetosheath flow and are likely to be almost unheated ionospheric ions from low altitudes. The paper discusses planetary ion energization via Hall electric field originated from ions and electron separation associated with magnetic field curvature.

Steady-state of the Martian Induced Magnetosphere and Its Rapid Response to Interplanetary Magnetic Field Rotation

Abstract:The induced magnetosphere in non-magnetized planets or moons, formed by the interaction between their atmosphere and stellar wind or planetary wind, is generally modulated by external magnetic field. The magnetic field in the induced magnetosphere is believed to be dominated by the draped field. The direction of such draped field is theoretically expected to align with the y-z direction of the interplanetary magnetic field. However, observations show the opposite direction of magnetic field in the induced magnetospheres from the interplanetary magnetic field direction. Using joint observations from Tianwen-1 and MAVEN, we obtain the averaged magnetic field map of the Martian induced magnetosphere in the accurate MSE coordinate system and calculated its standard deviation. The standard deviation confirms that the averaged magnetic field distribution is consistent with the steady state assumption. The magnetic field map illustrates a clockwise rotation of the averaged magnetic field in the y-z plane, occurring in both the dayside and nightside in the Martian induced magnetosphere. According to the magnetic induction equation, this clockwise rotation of the magnetic field occurs when a difference in the speed of plasma flow exists within the magnetosphere. It should be noted that the induced magnetospheres of the other non-magnetized planets exhibit similar qualitative properties to that of Mars, suggesting that they share comparable magnetic field characteristics. Observations of the response process of induced magnetosphere to external magnetic field are significant for understanding global dynamical processes in non-magnetized planets, and yet such observations are quite scarce. Using simultaneous observations from Tianwen-1 and Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN), we report for the first time the dynamic response of the Martian induced magnetosphere to the rotation of interplanetary magnetic field from the Sun. The magnetic field in the Martian induced magnetosphere deflected as the interplanetary magnetic field rotated suddenly, and eventually stabilized (< 3.5 minutes). The convective electric field rotated in response to the interplanetary magnetic field rotation, and the pick-up oxygen ion plume emerged in minutes (< 3 minutes). These quite short recovery timescales indicate that the induced magnetosphere is a rapidly dynamic system, and is highly sensitive to external magnetic field. It cautions us that change of interplanetary magnetic field should be considered as one of the general types of space weather on Mars, and it is essential of monitoring and short-term forecasting of interplanetary magnetic field upstream of Mars.

Abstract:Mars orbiter magnetometer (MOMAG) is one of seven science payloads onboard Tianwen-1's orbiter. Unlike most of the satellites, Tianwen-1's orbiter is not magnetically cleaned, and the boom where placed the magnetometer's sensors is not long enough. These pose many challenges to the magnetic field data processing. In this study, we introduce the in-flight calibration process of the Tianwen-1/MOMAG. The magnetic interference including spacecraft generated dynamic field and the slowly-changing zero offsets are cleaned in sequence. Then the calibrated magnetic field data are compared with the data from the Mars atmosphere and volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN). We find that some physical structures in the solar wind are consistent between the two data sets, and the distributions of the magnetic field strength in the solar wind are very similar. These results suggest that the in-flight calibration of the MOMAG is successful and the MOMAG provides reliable data for scientific research.

Abstract:The Mars radiation environment, both in past and at present, plays a vital role in the evolution of Martian atmosphere, so it is necessary to detect the background radiation environment both in the Martian atmosphere and the transfer orbit from Earth to Mars. The Tianwen-1 Energetic Particle Analyzer (EPA) is designed to measure and analyze the energetic charged particles emitted to the Martian atmosphere. Mars-EPA consists of two parts: one is the Mars-EPA sensor head and the other is the Mars-EPA electronics system. This paper begins with an introduction of Mars-EPA structure and function of each part, followed by a simulation of how sensor head structure is designed. It then evaluates the performance of detection system using Geant4 software, to whether this sensor is capable of identifying the target particle and proposes a reasonable ground calibration procedure, which allows on overall detection performance to some degree. This Mars-EPA has demonstrated a potentially high capability and configurability which hopefully will shed light on future development of compact energetic detectors in deep space exploration.

Abstract:Magnetosonic (MS) waves are dominant plasma waves causing severe Martian ionospheric erosion. They are generally considered to originate upstream of Martian bow shock with frequencies near the upstream proton gyrofrequency. However, whether MS waves can be locally excited lacks theoretical analysis. Here we present an event of MS waves with frequencies above and closely related to the local proton gyrofrequency in the Martian ionosphere. Concurrently, ring beam hot proton distributions are observed due to the penetration of magnetosheath protons. By employing the observed plasma and magnetic field data, the calculated linear growth rates for MS waves agree well with the observed wave power spectra, demonstrating that they can be locally excited by unstable ring beam hot protons at Mars. Our results could be of great help in understanding the excitation of MS waves in a heavy ion‐rich environment around unmagnetized planets.

Abstract:As incident solar wind encounters the martian upper atmosphere, it undergoes deflection particularly in the magnetosheath. However, the plasma flow exhibits asymmetrical distribution features within this transition region, which is investigated by employing a three‐dimensional Hall magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model from an energy transfer perspective in this study. Simulation results reveal that solar wind protons transfer momentum to ionospheric heavy ions through motional electric field in the hemisphere where the motional electric field points outward from the planet. In the opposite hemisphere, solar wind flow tends to be effectively accelerated by ambipolar and Hall electric fields. The distinct dynamics of solar wind protons in both hemispheres result in the asymmetrical deflection. Furthermore, the extent of asymmetry grows as the cross‐flow component of the upstream interplanetary magnetic field increases, but diminishes as the density of the solar wind proton increases, contingent upon the energy effectively acquired from ambipolar and Hall electric fields.

Abstract:Attributed to the lack of an Earth-like global intrinsic dipole magnetic field on Mars, the induced electromagnetic field environment plays a crucial role in the evolution of its atmosphere. The dominant motional electric field (EM) induced by the bulk motion of the magnetic field within the Martian magnetosheath serves to accelerate ions toward escape velocity, thereby forming a plume escape channel. However, the distribution morphology of EM itself has received limited attention in previous research. In this study, by taking advantage of the multi-fluid Hall-MHD model cooperating with the Martian crustal field model, we focus on elucidating the physical mechanisms underlying the asymmetrical distribution of EM and examining the influence of the crustal field on this asymmetry. The results obtained from the simulation conducted in the absence of the crustal field indicate that the EM is more intense within the −ZMSE magnetosheath, where EM is directed toward Mars, primarily due to its corresponding higher velocity and a stronger magnetic field at lower solar zenith angles. The Martian crustal field has the ability to enhance the local EM around the inner boundary of the magnetosheath by amplifying both the magnetic field and its associated velocity. Accordingly, these findings provide valuable insights into the asymmetric nature of EM within the Martian magnetosheath under typical quiet-time solar wind conditions.

Abstract:Abstract Using the 8.5‐year Venus Express measurements, we demonstrate the asymmetric plasma distributions in the Venusian magnetosheath. An escaping plume is formed by pickup oxygen ions in the hemisphere where the motional electric field points outward from Venus, while the velocity of solar wind protons is faster in the opposite hemisphere. The pickup O+ escape rate is estimated to be (3.6 ± 1.4) × 1024 s−1 at solar maximum, which is comparable to the ion loss rate through the magnetotail, and (1.3 ± 0.4) × 1024 s−1 at solar minimum. The increase of O+ fluxes with extreme ultraviolet (EUV) intensity is significant upstream of the bow shock, partially attributed to the increase of exospheric neutral oxygen density. However, the solar wind velocity just has a slight effect on the pickup O+ escape rate in the magnetosheath, while the effect of solar wind density is not observed. Our results suggest the pickup O+ escape rate is mainly controlled by EUV radiation.

Abstract:<p>The magnetic-to-particle energy conversion is one of the most fundamental physics processes to laboratory, space and astrophysical contexts. Adiabatic acceleration processes in moderate varying environment merely play significant roles to generate devastating cosmic rays and spectacular aurorae, etc. More commonly, when the violent variation or strongly inhomogeneity in electromagnetic field distorts the trajectory of the particles, non-adiabatic acceleration processes function more transiently and drastically on particle energization trigger explosive phenomena like sudden solar flares. However, without high-resolution simultaneous measurements on plasma and field at previous space missions, the small/fast scale of the non-adiabatic processes make it difficult to be analyzed to reach a comprehensive understanding to most of the underlying non-adiabatic acceleration mechanisms in space and astrophysical contexts. Here, using MMS data with unprecedented high temporal resolutions, we report such finding of acceleration for electrons trapped in a kinetic-size magnetic holes which at the same time is the acceleration region, and demonstrate the validity of the acceleration process by numerical simulation, achieving the reproduction for the observation.</p>
