Abstract:In a recent paper (Luo H et al., 2022), we found that the peak amplitudes of diurnal magnetic variations, measured during martian days (sols) at the InSight landing site, exhibited quasi Carrington-Rotation (qCR) periods at higher eigenmodes of the natural orthogonal components (NOC); these results were based on similar to 664 sols of magnetic field measurements. However, the source of these periodic variations is still unknown. In this paper we introduce the neutral-wind driven ionospheric dynamo current model (e.g., Lillis et al., 2019) to investigate the source. Four candidates - the draped IMF, electron density/plasma density, the neutral densities, and the electron temperature in the ionosphere with artificial qCR periodicity, are applied in the modeling to find the main factor likely to be causing the observed surface magnetic field variations that exhibit the same qCR periods. Results show that the electron density/plasma density, which controls the total conductivity in the dynamo region, appears to account for the greatest part of the surface qCR variations; its contribution reaches about 67.6%. The draped IMF, the neutral densities, and the electron temperature account, respectively, for only about 12.9%, 10.3%, and 9.2% of the variations. Our study implies that the qCR magnetic variations on the Martian surface are due primarily to variations of the dynamo currents caused by the electron density variations. We suggest also that the timevarying fields with the qCR period could be used to probe the Martian interior's electrical conductivity structure to a depth of at least 700 km.

Abstract:Understanding the interaction between Mars and the solar wind is crucial for comprehending the atmospheric evolution and climate change on Mars. To gain a comprehensive understanding of the Martian plasma environment, global numerical simulations are essential in addition to spacecraft observations. However, there are still discrepancies among different simulation models. This study investigates how these discrepancies stem from the considered physical processes and numerical implementations. We compare two global multispecies MHD models: the "Sun model" based on the BATS‐R‐US code and the "Sakata model" based on a newly developed multifluid model MAESTRO. By employing the same typical upstream conditions and the same neutral atmosphere for current Mars, along with similar numerical implementations such as inner boundary conditions, we obtain simulation results that exhibit unprecedented agreement between the two models. The dayside results are nearly identical, especially along the subsolar line, indicating the robustness of MHD models to predict dayside interaction under given upstream conditions and ionosphere assumptions. The escape rates of planetary ions are also in good agreement. However, discrepancies remain in the terminator and nightside regions. Detailed numerical implementations, including inner boundary conditions, magnetic field divergence control methods, and radial resolutions, are shown to influence certain aspects of the results greatly, such as magnetotail configuration and ion diffusion.

Abstract:Abstract Ionospheric chemistry plays an unexpectedly important role in the evolution of planetary habitability. This study is dedicated to a detailed modeling of the nightside Martian ionospheric structure and composition, a topic that has been poorly explored due to the absence of relevant measurements, but now becomes tractable owing to the unprecedented measurements made by the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution. Two-stream kinetic calculations and time-dependent fluid calculations are coupled to derive the nightside density profiles at 100–300 km for a large number of ion species, assuming solar wind electron precipitation as the only viable ionizing source in the ideal nonmagnetized atmosphere. Our calculations indicate the presence of a well-defined ionospheric peak at 146 km with a peak density of 8500 cm −3 , as driven by the strong atmospheric “absorption” of precipitating electrons at low altitudes. The distribution of nonterminal species is roughly under chemical equilibrium below 170 km, whereas for terminal species such as NO + and HCO + , diffusion is effective at essentially all altitudes, in direct contrast to the dayside behavior. In the more realistic magnetized atmosphere, the ionospheric peak seldom exists due to the patchiness of electron precipitation. In particular, our model results agree fairly well with the MAVEN measurements, especially in view of the coincidence between electron depletion and thermal plasma void seen along many MAVEN orbits. Compared to the dayside, the nightside ionospheric composition has a much higher proportion of NO + and lower proportion of CO 2 + , likely indicative of nightside enhancement of atmospheric O and N.

Magnetohydrodynamic Modeling of Background Solar Wind Near Mars: Comparison with MAVEN and Tianwen-1

Abstract:Combined with data assimilation methods, a three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) numerical model is an effective tool to explore the mechanism of space weather. As a driver of space weather, the dynamic development of stream interaction regions (SIRs) near the orbit of Mars is an area of active research. In this study, we use the interplanetary total variation diminishing (TVD) MHD model to simulate solar wind parameters and model SIRs near Mars from 2021 November 15 to 2021 December 31. In this model, the MHD equations are solved by the conservation TVD Lax–Friedrichs scheme in a rotating spherical coordinate system with six component meshes used on the spherical shell. Solar wind velocity, density, temperature, and magnetic field strength are given at the inner boundary due to the characteristic waves propagating outward. We compared modeled results with observations from Mars Atmospheric Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) and Tianwen-1 (China’s first Mars exploration mission). Statistical analysis shows that the simulated results can capture SIRs and are in good agreement with observations; moreover, the assimilated results based on the Kalman filter improve the accuracy of numerical prediction compared with simulated results. This paper is the first attempt to simulate SIR events combined with MAVEN and Tianwen-1 in situ observations. Our work demonstrates that using the MHD model with the Kalman filter to reconstruct solar wind parameters can help us study the characteristics of SIRs near Mars, improve the capabilities of space weather forecasting, and understand the background solar wind environment.
An investigation on the variations of dayside and nightside electron densities of the Martian ionosphere

Abstract:In this study, electron density data from Langmuir Probe and Waves (LPW) instrument onboard MAVEN are used to investigate the variations of the Martian ionosphere with Solar Zenith Angle (SZA) and the day-night difference of electron density. By analyzing electron density data during 2014-2017, we found that, the photochemical process is more important than the transport process below 200 km, and the day-night plasma transport can affect the electron density at SZA < 110 degrees. For the region above 200 km, the transport process can greatly affect the structure of the topside ionosphere, and the day-night difference of electron densities is much smaller than that below 200 km, and electron density decreases gradually with increasing SZA. In addition, we analyzed the electron density data during MAVEN's deep-dip campaigns. It was found that the strong geomagnetic fields in the southern hemisphere could affect the electron density at night. The closed geomagnetic lines might obstruct the electron precipitating process and cause a decrease in electron density as compared with surrounding regions. By comparing the electron density profiles during the deep-dip campaigns, it was found that the precipitation electrons probably affect the electron density below 160 km at night.

Abstract:When the solar wind interacts with the ionosphere of an unmagnetized planet, it induces currents that form an induced magnetosphere. These currents and their associated magnetic fields play a pivotal role in controlling the movement of charged particles, which is essential for understanding the escape of planetary ions. Unlike the well-documented magnetospheric current systems, the ionospheric current systems on unmagnetized planets remain less understood, which constrains the quantification of electrodynamic energy transfer from stars to these planets. Here, utilizing eight years of data from the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) mission, we investigate the global distribution of ionospheric currents on Mars. We have identified two distinct current systems in the ionosphere: one aligns with the solar wind electric field yet exhibits hemispheric asymmetry perpendicular to the electric field direction; the other corresponds to the flow pattern of annually-averaged neutral winds. We propose that these two current systems are driven by the solar wind and atmospheric neutral winds, respectively. Our findings reveal that Martian ionospheric dynamics are influenced by the neutral winds from below and the solar wind from above, highlighting the complex and intriguing nature of current systems on unmagnetized planets.

Abstract:Mars' magnetic field has been measured at large scale by orbiting spacecraft and at very small scale via Martian meteorites. Here we report on a ground magnetic survey on metre to kilometre scales. The Zhurong rover made vector measurements at 16 sites along a 1,089 m track in the Utopia Basin on Mars. It recorded an extremely weak magnetic field, with an order of the average intensity less than that inferred from orbit, in contrast to the large magnetic field in Elysium Planitia measured by InSight. A spacecraft measurement samples an area with radius comparable to its altitude, while a ground measurement samples an area with radius comparable to the depth of the magnetized body. The weak magnetic field measured by Zhurong indicates no magnetization anomalies for a depth of many kilometres around and below the rover's traverse. We suggest two possible explanations for the weak magnetic field: the entire Utopia Basin may have remained unmagnetized since its formation about 4 billion years ago or that the 5-km-radius ghost crater where Zhurong landed may have been been demagnetized by impact.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The Zhurong rover of the Tianwen-1 mission landed in southern Utopia Planitia, providing a unique window into the evolutionary history of the Martian lowlands. During its first 110 sols, Zhurong investigated and categorized surface targets into igneous rocks, lithified duricrusts, cemented duricrusts, soils and sands. The lithified duricrusts, analysed by using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy onboard Zhurong, show elevated water contents and distinct compositions from those of igneous rocks. The cemented duricrusts are likely formed via water vapor–frost cycling at the atmosphere–soil interface, as supported by the local meteorological conditions. Soils and sands contain elevated magnesium and water, attributed to both hydrated magnesium salts and adsorbed water. The compositional and meteorological evidence indicates potential Amazonian brine activities and present-day water vapor cycling at the soil–atmosphere interface. Searching for further clues to water-related activities and determining the water source by Zhurong are critical to constrain the volatile evolution history at the landing site.

A Review on the Study of Martian Ionosphere Based on Radio Occultation Observations

Abstract:The early observations of the Mars ionosphere are very limited. Most of the information concerning the ionospheric properties of Mars comes from radio occultation experiments. Recent measurements by Mars Global Surveyor and Mars Express have greatly increased the number of observations of Martian dayside and nightside ionosphere. Large datasets of electron number density profiles have been published online for scientific analysis. Martian ionosphere is influenced by many factors, such as: solar EUV and X ray irradiance, solar wind, solar flare, neutral atmosphere, crustal magnetic field, cosmic rays, meteoric showers and so on. They lead to instantaneous and seasonal variations in Martian ionosphere. In this paper, fundamental principles and features of planetary radio occultation technique are briefly discussed. An introduction of the domestic work concerning the Joint Russia-China Mars exploration (YH-1) is also presented here. New developments in the study of the Martian ionosphere based on radio occultation observations are viewed, mostly from Mars Global Surveyor and Mars Express datasets. The layer structure of Martian dayside ionosphere and factors affecting the variability of each layer are summarized. Here we adopted from Withers, to classify the structure of Martian dayside ionosphere as: M1 below, M1, M2, and M2 above. Some newest findings with regard to the influence of solar activity, neutral atmosphere, crustal magnetic field and meteoric showers on the electron density profile, especially on the peak density and peak height of M2 and M1 layers are presented. This paper also discusses the variation mechanisms and the recent studies of Martian nightside ionosphere. The future research topics of Martian ionosphere will be centered on the interactions of the solar wind and the upper atmosphere, ion loss at Mars, the crustal magnetic control of local ionosphere, structure of night ionosphere and so on.
Modeling of Kilometer-Scale Ionospheric Irregularities at Mars

Abstract:Recently, kilometer-scale Martian ionospheric irregularities have been measured by the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) mission (Fowler et al., 2020). In this study, we carried out a simulation of these irregularities, assuming a uniform Martian zonal neutral wind and a cosinusoidal perturbation of the plasma density as the seeding source. Results show that a vertical electric field shear could be induced by such a plasma density perturbation. We find that the vertical electric field shear causes a velocity shear of the plasma between the topside and bottomside ionosphere, which in turn is able to produce kilometer-scale ionospheric irregularities — irregularities of a smaller scale than were seen in previous simulations (Jiang CH et al., 2021). These kilometer-scale variations with altitude, in plasma density and magnetic field profiles, are comparable to the MAVEN observations.

Abstract:It is commonly believed that because of the direct solar wind interaction with the Martian atmosphere/ionosphere, the planet could have lost a significant part of its atmosphere. Closed field lines of the crustal magnetic field can weaken a transport of the ionospheric ions to the tail. Reconnection of the interplanetary magnetic field lines draping around Mars and the crustal magnetic field can also lead to a presense of sunward fluxes of planetary ions that might affect the total ion loss. The LatHyS (LATMOS Hybrid Simulation) three‐dimensional multispecies hybrid model is used here to characterize sunward fluxes of O+ ions and the magnetic field topology at Mars. It is shown that although reconnection between the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) and the crustal magnetic fields strongly modifies the field topology, then sunward ion fluxes are rather small and do not significantly change the total ion loss.

Abstract:Using a global magnetohydrodynamics numerical simulation, this work compares the interaction of the solar wind with Mars and Earth from the perspective of energy transfer under north–south interplanetary magnetic fields (IMFs). Mars lacks a global dipole magnetic field like Earth's and instead has a small-scale crustal magnetic field near highlands in the southern hemisphere. Unlike Earth's magnetopause reconnection (at the subsolar point or tail under a southward IMF, or behind the cusp under a northward IMF), the reconnection of the Martian magnetic pileup boundary (MPB) occurs near solar zenith angle (SZA) ≈ 45° (SZA ≈ 30° and 60°) for a southward (northward) IMF, resulting in asymmetric energy transfer between the northern and southern hemispheres. The Martian outflow of mechanical energy appears near SZA ≈ 45° (SZA ≈ 30° and 60°) under a southward (northward) IMF, accompanied by an inflow due to the process of "solar wind pickup." For energy transfer across the MPB, whether the IMF is northward or southward, the input of electromagnetic energy is twice as large as the input of mechanical energy, which is similar to Earth's magnetopause for a southward IMF, but opposite to it for a northward IMF. The energy transfer rate of the MPB is slightly higher in a northward IMF than in a southward one, whereas the energy transfer rate of Earth's magnetopause is far higher in a southward IMF than in a northward one.

Detection of Martian Ionosphere

Abstract:The exploration of Mars began in the early 1960s and has become the main subject of the space exploration recently.The Chinese deep space project(mainly focused on Mars)is developing.Land on Mars and live on Marsis the ultimate object for the Mars exploration and the Martian ionosphere is one of the environments to be understood necessarily.In this paper the basic methods of the Martian ionospheric detection and the typical results are introduced.The direct detection has the advantages of high precision,good spatial resolution,but it can not provide a long-term stable observation due to the short measuring time.The main indirect detection results of the Martian ionosphere come from the radio occultation method and the topside sounder.The radio occultation measurement provides a long-term stable detection of the whole profile of Martian ionosphere,but its horizontal resolution is not good and the Solar Zenith Angle(SZA)range of the measurement is limited by the orbits of Earth and Mars.The topside sounder can also provide a long-term stable measurement with high temporal and spatial resolutions,which gives new support for Martian ionospheric exploration.The combination of these detection methods will greatly improve the research of Martian ionosphere.
A Denser and Elevated Martian Nightside Ionosphere During Mars Season Ls 180–360°

Abstract:Using the Martian ionospheric electron density data obtained by the LPW instrument onboard MAVEN spacecraft from Oct. 2014 to Oct. 2018, we analyzed the seasonal behaviors of the Martian nightside ionosphere. It is found that from Mars season Ls 0–180° to Mas season Ls 180–360°, 1) at 200–300 km, the nightside ionospheric electron densities uniformly increased; 2) below 200 km, the electron density profiles rose in altitude, and peak electron densities increased. It is also found that the seasonal behaviors of the Martian nightside ionosphere are related to the crustal magnetic field topology. Larger seasonal variations of nightside ionospheric electron density can be observed in the regions where the crustal magnetic field is weak or quasi-vertical. We found that our current understandings of the Martian nightside ionosphere can only explain part of its seasonal behaviors, while further observations and simulations are needed to explain the remaining part.

Abstract:We investigate the seasonal variations of ion precipitation, utilizing observations from the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution mission spanning from 2014 January 4 to 2023 February 14. Our analysis reveals that a diminishing pattern characterizes the transition from Mars season L s 0°–180° to Mars season L s 180°–360°, manifesting as a reduction in precipitating ion fluxes. Additionally, we discern a significant influence of the crustal magnetic field on the seasonal variations in precipitating ion fluxes. Intriguingly, within regions where the crustal magnetic field exhibits a strong quasi-horizontal orientation, opposite seasonal trends become evident. The underlying physical mechanism driving these seasonal variations in ion precipitation is probably attributed to the mass loading effect that may decelerate the solar wind and influence the magnetic pileup. A detailed investigation is further demanded in the future.

Abstract:Abstract Mars lacks a planetary-scale intrinsic magnetosphere, and instead possesses small-scale crustal magnetic fields, creating a distinct class of plasma environments from intrinsic magnetospheres such as that of Earth or Saturn. Here we report the discovery of intrinsic magnetospheric ion behavior at Mars based on the measurements provided by Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN mission (MAVEN). We observed wedge-like dispersion structures of H + exhibiting butterfly-shaped distributions within the Martian crustal fields, a feature previously observed only in intrinsic magnetospheres. These dispersed structures are a result of drift motions that fundamentally resemble those observed in intrinsic magnetospheres. Our findings indicate that the Martian crustal fields have the potential to behave similarly to intrinsic magnetospheres in modifying the ion motions despite their weak strength and large inhomogeneity. This study offers insights into the role of crustal fields in ion escape and the mass-energy transfer between solar wind and Mars.

The solar wind plasma upstream of Mars observed by Tianwen-1: Comparison with Mars Express and MAVEN

Abstract:On the great journey to Mars, China’s first planetary exploration mission, the Tianwen-1 came within 26 million kilometers of Mars from 31 October 2020 to 25 January 2021 and was getting closer to its destination, the red planet, in search of answers to the cataclysmic climate change that occurred in Martian history. Both the escape of the Martian atmosphere and the loss of surface water were firmly influenced by solar activities. Tianwen-1 provided a unique chance to depict the solar wind streams between Earth and Mars during the minimum of Solar Cycle 25. During the three-month cruise phase of Tianwen-1, the solar wind flows were successively observed at Earth, Tianwen-1, and Mars. After the field of view correction and noise reduction, the solar wind velocity and density measured by Tianwen-1 show good agreement with those at Earth and Mars. The results indicate that the performance of the ion analyzer onboard the Tianwen-1 orbiter is reliable and stable. It is worth looking forward to the joint observations of ion escape with other Mars probes in the following Martian years.
