A Denser and Elevated Martian Nightside Ionosphere During Mars Season Ls 180–360°

Abstract:Using the Martian ionospheric electron density data obtained by the LPW instrument onboard MAVEN spacecraft from Oct. 2014 to Oct. 2018, we analyzed the seasonal behaviors of the Martian nightside ionosphere. It is found that from Mars season Ls 0–180° to Mas season Ls 180–360°, 1) at 200–300 km, the nightside ionospheric electron densities uniformly increased; 2) below 200 km, the electron density profiles rose in altitude, and peak electron densities increased. It is also found that the seasonal behaviors of the Martian nightside ionosphere are related to the crustal magnetic field topology. Larger seasonal variations of nightside ionospheric electron density can be observed in the regions where the crustal magnetic field is weak or quasi-vertical. We found that our current understandings of the Martian nightside ionosphere can only explain part of its seasonal behaviors, while further observations and simulations are needed to explain the remaining part.
Determination of Seasonal Variations in the Martian Neutral Atmosphere from Observations of Ionospheric Peak Height

Abstract:Radio occultation experiments allow us to measure electron and neutral densities in planetary atmospheres. Here we investigate such measurements from the Mars Global Surveyor Radio Science experiment in 2 consecutive Martian years (25 and 26). Using Chapman theory, we parameterize the ionospheric peak altitude in terms of the solar zenith angle, neutral scale height at the peak, neutral density at 20 km and the effective neutral scale height ( n ) between 20 km and the peak, finding the latter to be the primary driver of peak altitude. From the occultation data, we observe that altitudes of peak electron density at high northern latitudes show a clear seasonal trend, increasing from northern summer (Ls = 90°) to northern autumn (Ls = 180°), driven by substantial increases in n , despite neutral densities at 20 km steadily decreasing as surface temperatures drop. We find these trends to be consistent with neutral density predictions from the LMD Mars Global Circulation Model at both 20 km and 130 km. The primary mechanism responsible for this increase in the 20–130 km effective neutral scale height (and hence temperature) is the southward drift in subsolar latitude as northern summer becomes autumn. This drives the seasonal evolution of the Martian interhemispheric Hadley circulation. The downward branch of this circulation leads to an increasing warming in the middle atmosphere at high north latitudes from the northern summer to the northern autumn, causing an increase in neutral scale height at and below the ionospheric peak and thus an increase in the ionospheric peak height.

Abstract:Abstract Ionospheric chemistry plays an unexpectedly important role in the evolution of planetary habitability. This study is dedicated to a detailed modeling of the nightside Martian ionospheric structure and composition, a topic that has been poorly explored due to the absence of relevant measurements, but now becomes tractable owing to the unprecedented measurements made by the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution. Two-stream kinetic calculations and time-dependent fluid calculations are coupled to derive the nightside density profiles at 100–300 km for a large number of ion species, assuming solar wind electron precipitation as the only viable ionizing source in the ideal nonmagnetized atmosphere. Our calculations indicate the presence of a well-defined ionospheric peak at 146 km with a peak density of 8500 cm −3 , as driven by the strong atmospheric “absorption” of precipitating electrons at low altitudes. The distribution of nonterminal species is roughly under chemical equilibrium below 170 km, whereas for terminal species such as NO + and HCO + , diffusion is effective at essentially all altitudes, in direct contrast to the dayside behavior. In the more realistic magnetized atmosphere, the ionospheric peak seldom exists due to the patchiness of electron precipitation. In particular, our model results agree fairly well with the MAVEN measurements, especially in view of the coincidence between electron depletion and thermal plasma void seen along many MAVEN orbits. Compared to the dayside, the nightside ionospheric composition has a much higher proportion of NO + and lower proportion of CO 2 + , likely indicative of nightside enhancement of atmospheric O and N.

On the Small-Scale Fluctuations in the Peak Electron Density of Martian Ionosphere Observed by Mex/Marsis

Abstract:We reported the small-scale fluctuations in the peak electron density of dayside Martian ionosphere observed by MEX/MARSIS. MARSIS is an ionospheric sounder that can measure the vertical electron density profile of the topside ionosphere. In the experiment the ionospheric critical frequency can be determined within the accuracy of 5kHz, corresponding to a typical accuracy in electron density of 0.02%. As a space-borne remote sensing instrument, MARSIS can observe the ionosphere with a time resolution of 8s, enabling one to study the horizontal variation of the ionosphere. Besides the normal variations of the peak electron density with respect to the solar zenith angles, small fluctuations in peak electron density is detected within single orbit of observation. The appearance of these fluctuations is relatively smooth and wavy, distinct from measurement errors which are random and noisy. The fluctuations do not exhibit a prevailing wavelength either in space or in time. The peak-to-valley amplitude of the fluctuation can reach 200kHz in frequency, corresponding to a 10% variation in peak electron density. Over 38,000 peak values of electron density profiles were recorded, organized along each orbit. A mean variation of ∼6% in the peak electron density is found. Fourier analysis of the data was performed with respect to the horizontal distance the spacecraft passes in one orbit. Resulting spectra generally follow a −5/3 power law in a double logarithm plot, suggesting a turbulence-dominated nature. Perturbations propagating from upper ionosphere and fluctuations in the neutral density are discussed as potential causes for this observation. This observation reveals a sensitive proxy to monitor the dynamics of neutral Martian atmosphere at ∼130km altitude.
A Review on the Study of Martian Ionosphere Based on Radio Occultation Observations

Abstract:The early observations of the Mars ionosphere are very limited. Most of the information concerning the ionospheric properties of Mars comes from radio occultation experiments. Recent measurements by Mars Global Surveyor and Mars Express have greatly increased the number of observations of Martian dayside and nightside ionosphere. Large datasets of electron number density profiles have been published online for scientific analysis. Martian ionosphere is influenced by many factors, such as: solar EUV and X ray irradiance, solar wind, solar flare, neutral atmosphere, crustal magnetic field, cosmic rays, meteoric showers and so on. They lead to instantaneous and seasonal variations in Martian ionosphere. In this paper, fundamental principles and features of planetary radio occultation technique are briefly discussed. An introduction of the domestic work concerning the Joint Russia-China Mars exploration (YH-1) is also presented here. New developments in the study of the Martian ionosphere based on radio occultation observations are viewed, mostly from Mars Global Surveyor and Mars Express datasets. The layer structure of Martian dayside ionosphere and factors affecting the variability of each layer are summarized. Here we adopted from Withers, to classify the structure of Martian dayside ionosphere as: M1 below, M1, M2, and M2 above. Some newest findings with regard to the influence of solar activity, neutral atmosphere, crustal magnetic field and meteoric showers on the electron density profile, especially on the peak density and peak height of M2 and M1 layers are presented. This paper also discusses the variation mechanisms and the recent studies of Martian nightside ionosphere. The future research topics of Martian ionosphere will be centered on the interactions of the solar wind and the upper atmosphere, ion loss at Mars, the crustal magnetic control of local ionosphere, structure of night ionosphere and so on.
Reevaluating the relationship between the Martian ionospheric peak density and the solar radiation

Abstract:[1] Several sets of the electron density profiles measured by the radio occultation experiment on board Mars Global Surveyor have been analyzed to investigate the dependence of the peak electron density of the Martian ionosphere on the solar zenith angle (SZA), neutral gas scale height (Hn), and E-10.7, which was used as a proxy of the solar EUV radiation. Corrections have been made for the E-10.7 index at the Earth orbit to obtain the E-10.7 index at the Mars orbit ( denoted as E*(10.7)). The relationship between the peak electron density (n(peak))( in northern hemisphere) of the Martian ionosphere and the E*(10.7), SZA and Hn is that epsilon = ln(n(peak)])/ ln[(E*(10.7) . cos chi)/ Hn(peak)(0.33)]] approximate to 0.44, slightly departing from 0.5, the value for an ideal Chapman layer. For the data set measured in the strong crustal magnetic field region ( southern hemisphere), epsilon is higher than that in the nonmagnetic field region ( northern hemisphere), which could be caused by the higher electron temperature in the strong magnetic field.

Abstract:A climatological survey of Martian ionospheric plasma density irregularities was conducted by exploring the in-situ measurements of the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) spacecraft. The irregularities were first classified as enhancement, depletion, and oscillation. By checking the simultaneous magnetic field fluctuation, the irregularities have been classified into two types: with or without magnetic signatures. The classified irregularities exhibit diverse global occurrence patterns, as those with magnetic signatures tend to appear near the periphery of the crustal magnetic anomaly (MA), and those without magnetic signatures prefer to appear either inside of the MA or outside of the MA, depending on the type and solar zenith angle. Under most circumstances, the irregularities have a considerable occurrence rate at altitudes above the ionospheric dynamo height (above 200 km), and the magnetization state of the ions seems irrelevant to their occurrence. In addition, the irregularities do not show dependence on magnetic field geometry, except that the enhancement without magnetic signatures favors the vertical field line, implying its equivalence to the localized bulge. Other similarities and discrepancies exist in reference to previous studies. We believe this global survey complements previous research and provides crucial research clues for future efforts to clarify the nature of the Martian ionospheric irregularities.

Effect of the Seasonal Variations in the Lower Atmosphere on the Altitude of the Ionospheric Main Peak at Mars

Abstract:The heights of the Martian ionospheric main electron density peak observed by the Mars Global Surveyor Radio Science experiment in the northern and southern high‐latitude regions (60°–90°) are investigated. The data sets for both hemispheres were obtained in the same narrow solar longitude interval (∼134°–146°). The subsolar height of the main peak derived from the southern hemisphere data is 7.7 ± 4.3 km lower than that derived from the northern hemisphere data. The southern and northern hemispheres are in opposite seasons. The seasonal variations of the neutral atmospheric density and its scale height in the lower atmosphere are found to be the dominant reasons for the reported difference. Further analysis shows that the neutral atmosphere density at the altitude 20 km had the strongest effect.

Abstract We have computed a number of models of the Martian thermosphere with various constants and boundary values in the hydrostatic and heat-flux equations. The investigation is divided into two main parts. First, we have varied the basic parameters, one or two at a time, to find to what extent an uncertainty in one of these fundamental parameters affects the derived exospheric temperature and other characteristics of the upper atmosphere These models are physically oversimplified but mathematically serve their purpose. Second, with selected specific chemical compositions, we have integrated the equations with allowance for diffusive separation and absorption of sunlight in different spectral regions A rather detailed and general discussion is included of the efficiency with which photon energy is converted into the kinetic energy of heat in the neutral atmosphere. The computed models are thought to be fairly representative of an actual atmosphere with the assumed compositions. It appears that CO vibrational excitation is not so important as a thermostat as was previously suggested, but the rotational levels of CO, and to a smaller extent the fine-structure levels of the ground term of 0, may cause appreciable radiation loss. Direct observation of the Martian corona in the X 1302 resonance radiation of 0 1 should be possible and would allow the main present uncertainties to be removed. Abstract:The exploration of Mars began in the early 1960s and has become the main subject of the space exploration recently.The Chinese deep space project(mainly focused on Mars)is developing.Land on Mars and live on Marsis the ultimate object for the Mars exploration and the Martian ionosphere is one of the environments to be understood necessarily.In this paper the basic methods of the Martian ionospheric detection and the typical results are introduced.The direct detection has the advantages of high precision,good spatial resolution,but it can not provide a long-term stable observation due to the short measuring time.The main indirect detection results of the Martian ionosphere come from the radio occultation method and the topside sounder.The radio occultation measurement provides a long-term stable detection of the whole profile of Martian ionosphere,but its horizontal resolution is not good and the Solar Zenith Angle(SZA)range of the measurement is limited by the orbits of Earth and Mars.The topside sounder can also provide a long-term stable measurement with high temporal and spatial resolutions,which gives new support for Martian ionospheric exploration.The combination of these detection methods will greatly improve the research of Martian ionosphere.

It is assumed that Mars has a negligible magnetic moment, and a radiative equilibrium model, characterized by an exospheric temperature of 490°K, is adopted for the neutral atmosphere. The ionospheric structure is determined by integration of Maxwell's equations for a 3-component fluid, in combination with the equations for conservation of mass, momentum, and energy. It is demonstrated that a standing bow shock wave is required by the interaction of solar wind with the ionosphere. Profiles of various flow parameters, as well as electric and magnetic field profiles, are calculated, and the problem of how to extrapolate present results, which are strictly applicable only at the subsolar point, to other locations on the planet is discussed. The computed ionospheric structure is compared with the ionospheric profile observed by Mariner 4 and is found to agree satisfactorily. In particular, the dynamic model predicts a constant scale height of 29 km over an extensive altitude regime, in excellent agreement with the observed value. The dynamic scale height is smaller by a factor of 2 than the value computed under assumptions of photochemical equilibrium, a consequence of the pressure exerted on the ionosphere by the solar wind plasma. Empirical Models of Ion Density Distribution in the Dayside Martian Ionosphere

Abstract:With the aid of the recent Neutral Gas and Ion Mass Spectrometer (NGIMS) measurements made onboard the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution spacecraft, we construct empirical models for the vertical density distributions of 12 species in the dayside Martian ionosphere over the altitude range of 150-450 km, from abundant species such as O-2(+) , CO2+ , and O+ to trace species such as HO2+ and OCOH+. Two different sets of formulism are proposed to parameterize the ion density distribution characterized either by a distinctive layer structure or by a near exponential decay above 150 km. Both the solar control and magnetic control of ion distribution are taken into account in our modelings. In general, our empirical models are in good agreement with the NGIMS measurements. The full set of parameters constrained by data-model comparison is tabulated for reference. This allows the easy computation of any individual ion density profile for a unique combination of solar zenith angle, solar extreme ultraviolet flux, and ambient magnetic elevation, which in turn facilitates comparisons with photochemical model results. The empirical models reported in this study are an extension of previous empirical models constructed for the electron distribution in the dayside Martian ionosphere using both radar sounding and radio occultation data.

Effects of Martian Crustal Magnetic Field on Its Ionosphere

Abstract:The effect of the Martian crustal magnetic field is one of the hot topics of the study of Martian ionosphere. The studies on this topic are summarized in this paper. Main data of the Martian ionosphere were resulted from radio occultation experiments. According to the observations, the electron density scale height and the peak electron density of the Martian ionosphere are influenced by its crustal magnetic field. The strong horizontal magnetic field prevents the vertical diffusion of the plasma and makes the electron density scale height in the topside ionosphere close to that in the photo equilibrium region. In the cusp-like regions with strong vertical magnetic field, the enhanced vertical diffusion leads to a larger electron density scale height in the diffusion equilibrium region. The observation of radio occultation experiment onboard Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) showed that the averaged peak electron density observed in the southern hemisphere with strong crustal magnetic field was slightly larger than that in the northern hemisphere with weak crustal magnetic field. The Mars advanced radar for subsurface and ionosphere sounding (MARSIS) onboard Mars Express (MEX) was the first topside sounder to be used to observe Martian ionosphere. The MARSIS results confirmed that the enhancement of the peak electron density occurred in cusp-like regions with open field lines, and the amount of the enhancement was much larger than that observed by the radio occultation experiment. There are two possible mechanisms for the peak electron density enhancement in the cusp-like crustal magnetic field regions: One is the precipitation of the energetic particles and the other is the heating by the waves excited by plasma instabilities. It’s difficult to determine which one is the key mechanism for the peak electron density enhancement. Based on these studies, several interesting problems on the Martian ionosphere and plasma environment are presented.
A linearized coupled model of acoustic-gravity waves and the lower ionosphere at Mars

Abstract:Highly variable ionospheric structures were recently detected on Mars using spacecraft measurements. Acoustic-gravity waves (AGWs) could be the underlying mechanism. Studying the response of the Martian ionosphere to AGWs could provide us with an important understanding of the neutral wave--ionospheric coupling processes. We developed a linearized wave model to explore the plasma--neutral coupling driven by AGWs in the lower ionosphere of Mars. This model can describe the propagation and dissipation of AGWs in a realistic atmosphere and is the first of its kind to incorporate plasma behaviors associated with photochemistry and electromagnetic fields. We adopted a full-wave model as the first part of our coupled model to delineate wave propagation in a realistic atmosphere. The second part of our model consists of the governing equations describing the plasma behaviors. Therefore, our model not only replicates the result of the full-wave model, but can also be used to investigate the wave-driven variations in the plasma velocity and density, electromagnetic field, and thermal structures. Our model results reveal that ions are mainly dragged by neutrals and oscillate along the wave phase line below sim 200 km altitude. Electrons are primarily subject to gyro-motion along the magnetic field lines. The wave-driven distinct motions among charged particles can generate the perturbed electric current and electric field, further contributing to localized magnetic field fluctuations. Major charged constituents, including electrons, O$^ $, O$_ $, and CO$_ $, have higher density amplitudes when interacting with waves of larger periods. The presence of photochemistry leads to a decrease in the plasma density amplitude, and there exists a moderate correlation between the density variations of plasma and those of neutrals. Our numerical results indicate that the wave-driven variations range from several percent to sim 80 in the plasma density and from sim 0.2 to 17 in the magnetic field, values that are consistent with the spacecraft observations. Further calculations reveal that the wave-induced plasma--neutral coupling can heat the neutrals yet cool the plasmas. Electrons are cooler than ions in the coupling process. The wave-driven heating by neutral--ion collisions exceeds that by neutral--electron collisions but tends to be lower than the wave dissipative heating and photochemical heating. Our model has potential applications in studying the AGW-driven variable ionospheric structures and can be used for other planets.

The particle density profiles of electrons, CO2+/N2+, CO+, O2+, O+, NO+, O2 and O from 90 to 500 km have been deduced by adopting the Chapman modeling methodology. The correlation of the peak density/altitude with the solar zenith angle, the changes in the profile of the Martian ionosphere during solar flares, and the effects of Martian dust storms are analyzed. The results exhibit a positive/negative correlation between the peak density/altitude of the M2 layer and the solar zenith angle. Within the MAVEN observational record available, only three C-Class flares occurred on 26 August 2016, 29 November 2020, and 26 August 2021. The analysis reveals during these solar flare events, the electron density of the M2 layer above 200 km increases obviously. The peak density of M1 increases by 33.4%, 13.2% and 7.4%, while the peak height decreases by 0.1%, 10.2% and 4.4%, respectively. The Martian dust storm causes the peak height of the M2 layer to increase by 19.5 km, and the peak density to decrease by 4.2 × 109 m−3. Our study shows that the Martian ionosphere is similar to the Earth’s, which is of great significance for understanding the planetary ionosphere.

Abstract:We study the ionopause of Mars using a database of 6,893 ionopause detections obtained over 11 years by the MARSIS (Mars Advanced Radar for Subsurface and Ionosphere Sounding) experiment. The ionopause, in this work, is defined as a steep density gradient that appears in MARSIS remote sounding ionograms as a horizontal line at frequencies below 0.4 MHz. We find that the ionopause is located on average at an altitude of $363 \pm 65$ km. We also find that the ionopause altitude has a weak dependence on solar zenith angle and varies with the solar extreme ultraviolet (EUV) flux on annual and solar cycle time scales. Furthermore, our results show that very few ionopauses are observed when the crustal field strength at 400 km is greater than 40 nT. The strong crustal fields act as mini-magnetospheres that alter the solar wind interaction and prevent the ionopause from forming.
