Abstract:A climatological survey of Martian ionospheric plasma density irregularities was conducted by exploring the in-situ measurements of the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) spacecraft. The irregularities were first classified as enhancement, depletion, and oscillation. By checking the simultaneous magnetic field fluctuation, the irregularities have been classified into two types: with or without magnetic signatures. The classified irregularities exhibit diverse global occurrence patterns, as those with magnetic signatures tend to appear near the periphery of the crustal magnetic anomaly (MA), and those without magnetic signatures prefer to appear either inside of the MA or outside of the MA, depending on the type and solar zenith angle. Under most circumstances, the irregularities have a considerable occurrence rate at altitudes above the ionospheric dynamo height (above 200 km), and the magnetization state of the ions seems irrelevant to their occurrence. In addition, the irregularities do not show dependence on magnetic field geometry, except that the enhancement without magnetic signatures favors the vertical field line, implying its equivalence to the localized bulge. Other similarities and discrepancies exist in reference to previous studies. We believe this global survey complements previous research and provides crucial research clues for future efforts to clarify the nature of the Martian ionospheric irregularities.

Abstract:The exploration of Mars began in the early 1960s and has become the main subject of the space exploration recently.The Chinese deep space project(mainly focused on Mars)is developing.Land on Mars and live on Marsis the ultimate object for the Mars exploration and the Martian ionosphere is one of the environments to be understood necessarily.In this paper the basic methods of the Martian ionospheric detection and the typical results are introduced.The direct detection has the advantages of high precision,good spatial resolution,but it can not provide a long-term stable observation due to the short measuring time.The main indirect detection results of the Martian ionosphere come from the radio occultation method and the topside sounder.The radio occultation measurement provides a long-term stable detection of the whole profile of Martian ionosphere,but its horizontal resolution is not good and the Solar Zenith Angle(SZA)range of the measurement is limited by the orbits of Earth and Mars.The topside sounder can also provide a long-term stable measurement with high temporal and spatial resolutions,which gives new support for Martian ionospheric exploration.The combination of these detection methods will greatly improve the research of Martian ionosphere.

Abstract:Mars lacks a global magnetic field, and instead possesses small-scale crustal magnetic fields, making its magnetic environment fundamentally different from intrinsic magnetospheres like those of Earth or Saturn. Here we report the discovery of magnetospheric ion drift patterns, typical of intrinsic magnetospheres, at Mars usingmeasurements fromMarsAtmosphere and Volatile EvolutioNmission. Specifically, we observewedge-like dispersion structures of hydrogen ions exhibiting butterfly-shaped distributions within the Martian crustal fields, a feature previously observed only in planetary-scale intrinsic magnetospheres. These dispersed structures are the results of driftmotions that fundamentally resemble those observed in intrinsic magnetospheres. Our findings indicate that the Martian magnetosphere embodies an intermediate case where both the unmagnetized and magnetized ion behaviors could be observed because of the wide range of strengths and spatial scales of the crustal magnetic fields around Mars.

A Review on the Study of Martian Ionosphere Based on Radio Occultation Observations

Abstract:The early observations of the Mars ionosphere are very limited. Most of the information concerning the ionospheric properties of Mars comes from radio occultation experiments. Recent measurements by Mars Global Surveyor and Mars Express have greatly increased the number of observations of Martian dayside and nightside ionosphere. Large datasets of electron number density profiles have been published online for scientific analysis. Martian ionosphere is influenced by many factors, such as: solar EUV and X ray irradiance, solar wind, solar flare, neutral atmosphere, crustal magnetic field, cosmic rays, meteoric showers and so on. They lead to instantaneous and seasonal variations in Martian ionosphere. In this paper, fundamental principles and features of planetary radio occultation technique are briefly discussed. An introduction of the domestic work concerning the Joint Russia-China Mars exploration (YH-1) is also presented here. New developments in the study of the Martian ionosphere based on radio occultation observations are viewed, mostly from Mars Global Surveyor and Mars Express datasets. The layer structure of Martian dayside ionosphere and factors affecting the variability of each layer are summarized. Here we adopted from Withers, to classify the structure of Martian dayside ionosphere as: M1 below, M1, M2, and M2 above. Some newest findings with regard to the influence of solar activity, neutral atmosphere, crustal magnetic field and meteoric showers on the electron density profile, especially on the peak density and peak height of M2 and M1 layers are presented. This paper also discusses the variation mechanisms and the recent studies of Martian nightside ionosphere. The future research topics of Martian ionosphere will be centered on the interactions of the solar wind and the upper atmosphere, ion loss at Mars, the crustal magnetic control of local ionosphere, structure of night ionosphere and so on.

Abstract:Investigations of planetary atmospheres,ionospheres,rings,and magnetic fields using radio science techniques have been conducted by almost every planetary mission,and have acquired many significant scientific results.Changes in the frequency,phase,amplitude and polarization of spacecraft radio signals,caused by passage through a planet's atmosphere and ionosphere,have been observed in rising and descending planet occultation events.Utilizing an inversion method,we can obtain the refractivity profiles of the atmosphere,as well as the density,temperature and pressure profiles of the neutral atmosphere,and the electron density profile of the ionosphere.In the first Chinese YH-1 Mars mission,characteristics of the Martian atmosphere and ionosphere will be detected by a radio occultation experiment.The details are presented in this paper.
An automatic classification method for mapping Martian landforms

Abstract:The physiographic map can visualize spatial relations between different landforms, thus providing insights into geologic processes that shaped the present-day Martian landscape. The physiographic map of Mars surface is usually made through image interpretation, which is always labor-intensive and highly depends on the expert knowledge. In this paper, we propose an efficient and automatic classification method for characterization of landforms on Mars by using the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA) digital elevation data. The proposed method was tested on a region where China's Mars probe Tianwen-1 landed. The study area covers the Nepenthes Mensae, Amenthes Planum, northern Terra Cimmeria, northern Hesperia Planum and southern Utopia Planitia region, having a size of 2250km×2750km centered at 117°E, 6°N. The obtained results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method in describing different topographic characteristics of the Martian landforms. Note that the proposed method is completely data-driven, which can provide a rapid mapping result in large geographical regions, especially from a global perspective to reveal the Martian landform information.

Abstract:When the solar wind interacts with the ionosphere of an unmagnetized planet, it induces currents that form an induced magnetosphere. These currents and their associated magnetic fields play a pivotal role in controlling the movement of charged particles, which is essential for understanding the escape of planetary ions. Unlike the well-documented magnetospheric current systems, the ionospheric current systems on unmagnetized planets remain less understood, which constrains the quantification of electrodynamic energy transfer from stars to these planets. Here, utilizing eight years of data from the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) mission, we investigate the global distribution of ionospheric currents on Mars. We have identified two distinct current systems in the ionosphere: one aligns with the solar wind electric field yet exhibits hemispheric asymmetry perpendicular to the electric field direction; the other corresponds to the flow pattern of annually-averaged neutral winds. We propose that these two current systems are driven by the solar wind and atmospheric neutral winds, respectively. Our findings reveal that Martian ionospheric dynamics are influenced by the neutral winds from below and the solar wind from above, highlighting the complex and intriguing nature of current systems on unmagnetized planets.

Abstract:Abstract Ionospheric chemistry plays an unexpectedly important role in the evolution of planetary habitability. This study is dedicated to a detailed modeling of the nightside Martian ionospheric structure and composition, a topic that has been poorly explored due to the absence of relevant measurements, but now becomes tractable owing to the unprecedented measurements made by the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution. Two-stream kinetic calculations and time-dependent fluid calculations are coupled to derive the nightside density profiles at 100–300 km for a large number of ion species, assuming solar wind electron precipitation as the only viable ionizing source in the ideal nonmagnetized atmosphere. Our calculations indicate the presence of a well-defined ionospheric peak at 146 km with a peak density of 8500 cm −3 , as driven by the strong atmospheric “absorption” of precipitating electrons at low altitudes. The distribution of nonterminal species is roughly under chemical equilibrium below 170 km, whereas for terminal species such as NO + and HCO + , diffusion is effective at essentially all altitudes, in direct contrast to the dayside behavior. In the more realistic magnetized atmosphere, the ionospheric peak seldom exists due to the patchiness of electron precipitation. In particular, our model results agree fairly well with the MAVEN measurements, especially in view of the coincidence between electron depletion and thermal plasma void seen along many MAVEN orbits. Compared to the dayside, the nightside ionospheric composition has a much higher proportion of NO + and lower proportion of CO 2 + , likely indicative of nightside enhancement of atmospheric O and N.

Empirical Models of Ion Density Distribution in the Dayside Martian Ionosphere

Abstract:With the aid of the recent Neutral Gas and Ion Mass Spectrometer (NGIMS) measurements made onboard the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution spacecraft, we construct empirical models for the vertical density distributions of 12 species in the dayside Martian ionosphere over the altitude range of 150-450 km, from abundant species such as O-2(+) , CO2+ , and O+ to trace species such as HO2+ and OCOH+. Two different sets of formulism are proposed to parameterize the ion density distribution characterized either by a distinctive layer structure or by a near exponential decay above 150 km. Both the solar control and magnetic control of ion distribution are taken into account in our modelings. In general, our empirical models are in good agreement with the NGIMS measurements. The full set of parameters constrained by data-model comparison is tabulated for reference. This allows the easy computation of any individual ion density profile for a unique combination of solar zenith angle, solar extreme ultraviolet flux, and ambient magnetic elevation, which in turn facilitates comparisons with photochemical model results. The empirical models reported in this study are an extension of previous empirical models constructed for the electron distribution in the dayside Martian ionosphere using both radar sounding and radio occultation data.

Abstract:We investigate the seasonal variations of ion precipitation, utilizing observations from the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution mission spanning from 2014 January 4 to 2023 February 14. Our analysis reveals that a diminishing pattern characterizes the transition from Mars season L s 0°–180° to Mars season L s 180°–360°, manifesting as a reduction in precipitating ion fluxes. Additionally, we discern a significant influence of the crustal magnetic field on the seasonal variations in precipitating ion fluxes. Intriguingly, within regions where the crustal magnetic field exhibits a strong quasi-horizontal orientation, opposite seasonal trends become evident. The underlying physical mechanism driving these seasonal variations in ion precipitation is probably attributed to the mass loading effect that may decelerate the solar wind and influence the magnetic pileup. A detailed investigation is further demanded in the future.

Abstract:Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Radio Occultation (RO) has provided high-quality atmospheric data assimilated in Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models and climatology studies for more than 20 years. In the satellite–satellite GNSS-RO geometry, the measurements are susceptible to ionospheric scintillation depending on the solar and geomagnetic activity, seasons, geographical location and local time. This study investigates the application of the Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithm in developing an automatic detection model of F-layer scintillation in GNSS-RO measurements using power spectral density (PSD). The model is intended for future analyses on the influence of space weather and solar activity on RO data products over long time periods. A novel data set of occultations is used to train the SVM algorithm. The data set is composed of events at low latitudes on 15–20 March 2015 (St. Patrick’s Day geomagnetic storm, high solar flux) and 14–19 May 2018 (quiet period, low solar flux). A few conditional criteria were first applied to a total of 5340 occultations to define a set of 858 scintillation candidates. Models were trained with scintillation indices and PSDs as training features and were either linear or Gaussian kernel. The investigations also show that besides the intensity PSD, the (excess) phase PSD has a positive contribution in increasing the detection of true positives.

Abstract:A dual-wavelength spaceborne Martian polarized wind imaging Michelson interferometer based on liquid crystal tunable filters (LCTF-MPWIMI) has been proposed for the remote sensing detection of dynamic parameters such as wind speed and temperature in the middle and upper atmosphere of Mars. Using the detected Martian oxygen atom emission lines at 557.7 nm and 630.0 nm as observation spectral lines, this technology extends the detection altitude range for Martian atmospheric wind speed and temperature to 60–180 km. By leveraging the different spectral line visibility of the interferograms at the two wavelengths, a novel method for measuring Martian atmospheric temperature is proposed: the dual-wavelength spectral line visibility product method. This new approach reduces the uncertainty of temperature detection compared to traditional single spectral line visibility methods, while maintaining the precision of wind speed measurements. The feasibility of the LCTF-MPWIMI for measuring wind and temperature fields in the Martian middle and upper atmosphere has been validated through theoretical modeling and computer simulations. The interferometer, as a key component of the system, has been designed and analyzed. The proposed LCTF-MPWIMI instrument is free of mechanical moving parts, offering flexible wavelength selection and facilitating miniaturization. The dual-wavelength temperature measurement method introduced in this work provides superior temperature measurement precision compared to any single spectral line when the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the interferograms is comparable. Moreover, this method does not impose specific requirements on the atomic state of the spectral lines, making it broadly applicable to similar interferometric wind measurement instruments. These innovations offer advanced tools and methodologies for measuring wind speeds and temperatures in the atmospheres of Mars and other planets.

Abstract:Detecting large-scale flux ropes (FRs) embedded in interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) and assessing their geoeffectiveness are essential, since they can drive severe space weather. At 1 au, these FRs have an average duration of 1 day. Their most common magnetic features are large, smoothly rotating magnetic fields. Their manual detection has become a relatively common practice over decades, although visual detection can be time-consuming and subject to observer bias. Our study proposes a pipeline that utilizes two supervised binary classification machine-learning models trained with solar wind magnetic properties to automatically detect large-scale FRs and additionally determine their geoeffectiveness. The first model is used to generate a list of autodetected FRs. Using the properties of the southward magnetic field, the second model determines the geoeffectiveness of FRs. Our method identifies 88.6% and 80% of large-scale ICMEs (duration ≥ 1 day) observed at 1 au by the Wind and the Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory missions, respectively. While testing with continuous solar wind data obtained from Wind, our pipeline detected 56 of the 64 large-scale ICMEs during the 2008–2014 period (recall = 0.875), but also many false positives (precision = 0.56), as we do not take into account any additional solar wind properties other than the magnetic properties. We find an accuracy of 0.88 when estimating the geoeffectiveness of the autodetected FRs using our method. Thus, in space-weather nowcasting and forecasting at L1 or any planetary missions, our pipeline can be utilized to offer a first-order detection of large-scale FRs and their geoeffectiveness.

Abstract:The detection of Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) is an important prerequisite for establishing a CME event database and realizing the prediction of CME interplanetary propagation. The Lyman-alpha Solar Telescope (LST) aboard the ASO-S (Advanced Space-based Solar Observatory) satellite will be equipped with a white-light coronagraph. The images with CME detected will be contributed to various space weather prediction centers in China for CME early warning. The Visual Geometry Group (VGG) 16 convolutional neural network method is applied by us to automatically and effectively classify coronagraph images. Firstly, based on the image of the white light coronagraph of Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronagraph Experiment (LASCO) C2, we labeled the images according to whether a CME is observed. Then, the data set was used for training the VGG model. We find that the accuracy of the model in the test set classification reaches 92.5%. Next, according to the obtained classification results and combined with the space-time continuity rules, we corrected the mislabeling of images, and derived our final CME image sequences. Compared with the manual CME catalog of Coordinated Data Analysis Workshops (CDAW), the classified CME image sequences can include CME data more completely, and have higher detection sensitivity for weak CME structures.
On the Small-Scale Fluctuations in the Peak Electron Density of Martian Ionosphere Observed by Mex/Marsis

Abstract:We reported the small-scale fluctuations in the peak electron density of dayside Martian ionosphere observed by MEX/MARSIS. MARSIS is an ionospheric sounder that can measure the vertical electron density profile of the topside ionosphere. In the experiment the ionospheric critical frequency can be determined within the accuracy of 5kHz, corresponding to a typical accuracy in electron density of 0.02%. As a space-borne remote sensing instrument, MARSIS can observe the ionosphere with a time resolution of 8s, enabling one to study the horizontal variation of the ionosphere. Besides the normal variations of the peak electron density with respect to the solar zenith angles, small fluctuations in peak electron density is detected within single orbit of observation. The appearance of these fluctuations is relatively smooth and wavy, distinct from measurement errors which are random and noisy. The fluctuations do not exhibit a prevailing wavelength either in space or in time. The peak-to-valley amplitude of the fluctuation can reach 200kHz in frequency, corresponding to a 10% variation in peak electron density. Over 38,000 peak values of electron density profiles were recorded, organized along each orbit. A mean variation of ∼6% in the peak electron density is found. Fourier analysis of the data was performed with respect to the horizontal distance the spacecraft passes in one orbit. Resulting spectra generally follow a −5/3 power law in a double logarithm plot, suggesting a turbulence-dominated nature. Perturbations propagating from upper ionosphere and fluctuations in the neutral density are discussed as potential causes for this observation. This observation reveals a sensitive proxy to monitor the dynamics of neutral Martian atmosphere at ∼130km altitude.
