Abstract:Modern age electronic devices pose a challenge to remove large amounts of heat from a smaller surface area for safe operation. Microchannel heat sinks (MCHS) have been identified as effective cooling devices, their performance is limited by nonuniform heat transfer and high pumping power. The current study aims to investigate the effect of incorporating secondary inlets in microchannel heat sinks. It improves the uniformity in the temperature distribution by reducing the gap between the maximum and minimum temperature. The study also explores the effects of various secondary inlet locations, numbers, and angles. It is observed that moving the secondary inlet towards the primary inlet and reducing the angle of the secondary inlet improves the uniformity of the temperature distribution. Finally, the study investigates the performance of a microchannel with the transverse inlet at center and axial outlet at both ends. This configuration achieves a higher heat transfer coefficient, and lower average bottom surface temperature than the conventional plain microchannel and the microchannel with secondary inlet. However, the uniformity of the temperature distribution is poor.
