Abstract:Ammonia is a critical component in fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, and fine chemicals and is an ideal, carbon-free fuel. Recently, lithium-mediated nitrogen reduction has proven to be a promising route for electrochemical ammonia synthesis at ambient conditions. In this work, we report a continuous-flow electrolyzer equipped with 25–square centimeter–effective area gas diffusion electrodes wherein nitrogen reduction is coupled with hydrogen oxidation. We show that the classical catalyst platinum is not stable for hydrogen oxidation in the organic electrolyte, but a platinum-gold alloy lowers the anode potential and avoids the decremental decomposition of the organic electrolyte. At optimal operating conditions, we achieve, at 1 bar, a faradaic efficiency for ammonia production of up to 61 ± 1% and an energy efficiency of 13 ± 1% at a current density of −6 milliamperes per square centimeter.

Abstract:Lithium: how busy are you! In the current energy transition, lithium also plays a fundamental role in the electrochemical production of ammonia, i.e. a safe and strategic hydrogen carrier. This work analyses the main academic and industrial scenarios, showing the future prospects for large‐scale production of e‐ammonia with sustainable materials. Electrochemical N2 reduction reaction (E‐NRR) has recently gained increasing interest within the scientific community, due to the ongoing energy crisis and pursuit of process sustainability. In this scenario, emerging lithium‐mediated (Li‐m) strategies are obtaining promising Faradaic efficiency (FE) and NH3 production rate values. In this work, the Li‐m scenarios are classified and explained toward a more sustainable process. Continuous processes, with a lithium salt and a proton donor in an electrolytic cell, are analyzed and compared with stepwise pathways. Different parameters are summarized in relation to the system stability, for which the importance of a tailored solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer emerged. Among stepwise processes, the thermochemical direct nitridation of lithium is discussed together with the recently developed Galvanic Li─N2 cell strategy.

Abstract:Ammonia (NH 3 ) is a key commodity chemical for the agricultural, textile and pharmaceutical industries, but its production via the Haber–Bosch process is carbon-intensive and centralized. Alternatively, an electrochemical method could enable decentralized, ambient NH 3 production that can be paired with renewable energy. The first verified electrochemical method for NH 3 synthesis was a process mediated by lithium (Li) in organic electrolytes. So far, however, elements other than Li remain unexplored in this process for potential benefits in efficiency, reaction rates, device design, abundance and stability. In our demonstration of a Li-free system, we found that calcium can mediate the reduction of nitrogen for NH 3 synthesis. We verified the calcium-mediated process using a rigorous protocol and achieved an NH 3 Faradaic efficiency of 40 ± 2% using calcium tetrakis(hexafluoroisopropyloxy)borate (Ca[B(hfip) 4 ] 2 ) as the electrolyte. Our results offer the possibility of using abundant materials for the electrochemical production of NH 3 , a critical chemical precursor and promising energy vector.

Abstract:The electrochemical synthesis of ammonia has emerged as a sustainable alternative to the traditional Haber-Bosch process. This review provides a comprehensive examination of the transition from batch reactors to flow reactors in the context of lithium-mediated nitrogen reduction for electrochemical ammonia synthesis. It underscores the advances made in mechanistic understanding, reactor design, and the exploration of key variables such as pressure, Li salts, proton shuttles, and additives. The advantages and disadvantages of both reactor types are critically assessed, offering insights into their suitability for scaling up production. Moreover, this review elucidates the role of various factors in enhancing Faradaic efficiency and energy efficiency, thus contributing to the development of more efficient, sustainable, and economically viable electrochemical ammonia synthesis methods. The synergy between fundamental research and engineering advancements in this field is highlighted, providing a roadmap for future research endeavors and industrial applications.

Abstract:Ammonia is a key component of fertilizers, a crucial industrial chemical and a carbon-free fuel. Electrosynthesis of ammonia from nitrogen under ambient conditions presents an attractive alternative to the centralized Haber–Bosch process. Although lithium- and calcium-mediated nitrogen reduction (Li-NRR and Ca-NRR) show promise, long-term continuous ammonia electrosynthesis at high rates will be needed for industrial application. In this Perspective we argue that for Li-NRR and Ca-NRR to operate sustainably, the use of continuous-flow reactors—in which NRR is coupled with the hydrogen oxidation reaction, avoiding non-sustainable proton sources and electrolyte oxidation—is essential. Providing the necessary protons via hydrogen oxidation is vital for the sustainable production of ammonia and long-term system stability. We propose strategies such as optimizing the solid–electrolyte interphase design, refining the electrode and reactor engineering to enhance the system stability and ammonia production rate. We also strongly advocate the exploration of electrocatalytic routes for surpassing the theoretical energy efficiency limit of Li/Ca-NRR.

Abstract:The lithium-mediated nitrogen reduction reaction (LiNRR) produces ammonia in ambient conditions. This electrochemical pathway is dependent on a catalytic solid–electrolyte interphase—a nanoscale passivation layer formed from reductive electrolyte decomposition on the surface of lithium metal. The catalytic solid–electrolyte interphase is a unique nanostructured environment that exists on reactive metal surfaces and intimately influences product selectivity. Here we explore recent progress made in the field of lithium-mediated nitrogen reduction to ammonia, especially in light of growing knowledge about the nature of the catalytic solid–electrolyte interphase. We systematically analyse the observed chemical species and reactions that occur within the solid–electrolyte interphase. We also summarize key developments in kinetic and transport models, as well as highlight the cathodic and complementary anodic reactions. Trends in ammonia selectivities and rates with varying electrolyte compositions, cell designs and operating conditions are extracted and used to articulate a path forward for continued development of lithium-mediated nitrogen reduction to ammonia.

Abstract:The Haber Bosch process has served as the dominant method of synthesizing ammonia over the last century. Ammonia produced through this route leads to a stoichiometric carbon dioxide footprint and also involves harsh conditions which limit modularity of the process. We are developing a continuous lithium-mediated approach through which nitrogen can be fixed at ambient conditions while eliminating the carbon dioxide footprint. We have elucidated the reaction network through which ammonia synthesis occurs in competition with hydrogen evolution. The coupling of kinetics and transport has a significant influence on the rates of ammonia synthesis, providing a means to improve selectivity of nitrogen fixation. By creating gas diffusion electrodes compatible with non-aqueous solvents, we have achieved high rates of ammonia synthesis at atmospheric pressure. The solid electrolyte interphase is found to be controlling of lithium-mediated nitrogen reduction rates and selectivities, as understood through cryogenic transmission electron microscopy.

Abstract:Ammonia is crucial as a fertilizer and in the chemical industry and is considered to be a carbon-free fuel1. Ammonia electrosynthesis from nitrogen under ambient conditions offers an attractive alternative to the Haber-Bosch process2,3, and lithium-mediated nitrogen reduction represents a promising approach to continuous-flow ammonia electrosynthesis, coupling nitrogen reduction with hydrogen oxidation4. However, tetrahydrofuran, which is commonly used as a solvent, impedes long-term ammonia production owing to polymerization and volatility problems. Here we show that a chain-ether-based electrolyte enables long-term continuous ammonia synthesis. We find that a chain-ether-based solvent exhibits non-polymerization properties and a high boiling point (162 °C) and forms a compact solid-electrolyte interphase layer on the gas diffusion electrode, facilitating ammonia release in the gas phase and ensuring electrolyte stability. We demonstrate 300 h of continuous operation in a flow electrolyser with a 25 cm2 electrode at 1 bar pressure and room temperature, and achieve a current-to-ammonia efficiency of 64 ± 1% with a gas-phase ammonia content of approximately 98%. Our results highlight the crucial role of the solvent in long-term continuous ammonia synthesis.

Abstract:Ammonia is a large-scale commodity essential to fertilizer production, but the Haber-Bosch process leads to massive emissions of carbon dioxide. Electrochemical ammonia synthesis is an attractive alternative pathway, but the process is still limited by low ammonia production rate and faradaic efficiency. Herein, guided by our theoretical model, we present a highly efficient lithium-mediated process enabled by using different lithium salts, leading to the formation of a uniform solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer on a porous copper electrode. The uniform lithium-fluoride-enriched SEI layer provides an ammonia production rate of 2.5 ± 0.1 μmol s-1 cmgeo -2 at a current density of -1 A cmgeo -2 with 71% ± 3% faradaic efficiency under 20 bar nitrogen. Experimental X-ray analysis reveals that the lithium tetrafluoroborate electrolyte induces the formation of a compact and uniform SEI layer, which facilitates homogeneous lithium plating, suppresses the undesired hydrogen evolution as well as electrolyte decomposition, and enhances the nitrogen reduction.

Abstract:Green synthesis of ammonia by electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) shows great potential as an alternative to the Haber-Bosch process but is hampered by sluggish production rate and low Faradaic efficiency. Recently, lithium-mediated electrochemical NRR has received renewed attention due to its reproducibility. However, further improvement of the system is restricted by limited recognition of its mechanism. Herein, we demonstrate that lithium-mediated NRR began with electrochemical deposition of lithium, followed by two chemical processes of dinitrogen splitting and protonation to ammonia. Furthermore, we quantified the extent to which the freshly deposited active lithium lost its activity toward NRR due to a parasitic reaction between lithium and electrolyte. A high ammonia yield of 0.410 ± 0.038 μg s-1 cm-2 geo and Faradaic efficiency of 39.5 ± 1.7% were achieved at 20 mA cm-2 geo and 10 mA cm-2 geo, respectively, which can be attributed to fresher lithium obtained at high current density.

Abstract:Electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) has been regarded as one of the most promising alternative strategies for nitrogen fixation, and the design of efficient NRR catalysts is the critical factor. Herein, boron and sulfur co-doped mesoporous Rh film on Ni foam (B, S-mRh/NF) is developed for electrochemical ammonia synthesis. The boron and sulfur co-doping, the B, S-mRh/NF, can inhibit competitive hydrogen evolution reaction effectively. Owing to binder-free mesoporous structures, binder-free characteristic, and multicomponent alloy, the B, S-mRh/NF displays a high NH3 yield of 11.88 mg/h/cm(2) at -0.1 V and Faraday efficiency of 38.42% at -0.05 V in neutral electrolyte. This work offers an effective strategy for the rational design of nonmetal-doped porous Rh electrocatalysts with self-supported structure, which would be highly potential for the electrochemical ammonia synthesis. Abstract:Ammonia is of great importance in fertilizer production and chemical synthesis. It can also potentially serve as a carbon-free energy carrier for a future hydrogen economy. Motivated by a worldwide effort to lower carbon emissions, ammonia synthesis by lithium-mediated electrochemical nitrogen reduction (LiNR) has been considered as a promising alternative to the Haber-Bosch process. A significant performance improvement in LiNR has been achieved in recent years by exploration of favorable lithium salt and proton donor for the electrolyte recipe, but the solvent study is still in its infancy. In this work, a systematic investigation on ether-based solvents toward LiNR is conducted. The assessments of solvent candidates are built on their conductivity, parasitic reactions, product distribution, and faradaic efficiency. Notably, dimethoxyethane gives the lowest potential loss among the investigated systems, while tetrahydrofuran achieves an outstanding faradaic efficiency of 58.5 +/- 6.1% at an ambient pressure. We found that solvent molecules impact the above characteristics by dictating the solvation configurations of conductive ions and inducing the formation of solid electrolyte interphase with different compositions. This study highlights the importance of solvents in the LiNR process and advances the electrolyte optimization for better performance.
Mechanistic insights into the stepwise lithium-mediated electrochemical nitrogen reduction for enhanced ammonia synthesis

Abstract:The lithium-mediated electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (Li-NRR) is a sustainable route for green NH 3 synthesis. It accelerates the N 2 reduction by reacting the inert N ≡ N with active Li metal. However, the study on the mechanism of the Li-NRR process remains limited. Herein, a novel stepwise Li-NRR system is established to separately optimize the major steps of Li-NRR: lithium-ion reduction, lithium nitridation, and Li 3 N protonation. It is revealed that during the Solid Electrolyte Interface (SEI) decomposition, the carbon chains in organic species become shorter, and Li x BF y is converted to LiF, which is similar to the continuous Li-NRR. Contrary to the continuous Li-NRR, the O/C ratio decreases as the SEI decomposes due to the absence of ethanol. Commercial Cu, Ni, and Zn are employed as cathodes in the experiments at various currents. The highest Faraday efficiency of 33.2 % and ammonia yield rate of 1404.5 μg h −1 cm −2 are achieved on Zn electrode owing to its superior electron transfer and enhanced Li + diffusion than those of Cu and Ni. The current has also been found to affect Faraday efficiency through the portion of active lithium in coulomb efficiency experiments. Moreover, the LiCl generated in protonation process is found to facilitate lithium cycling.

Abstract:Ammonia is closely associated with the food supply and production of chemicals in modern society. Motived by the global shift toward green production, the synthesis of ammonia via the electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) has been proposed as an alternative to the traditional Haber-Bosch process. In this case, the lithium-mediated process (LiNR) is considered to be the most promising route in the field of NRR in terms of outstanding ammonia yield and faradaic efficiency; however, it is limited by its poor gas transfer, dependence on organic solvent and significant voltage loss. In this study, a feasible membrane electrode assembly (MEA) configuration is proposed as a promising solution to overcome the above-mentioned problems. The MEA was comprised of lithium-deposited stainless-steel cloth as the cathode, lithium-doped polyethylene oxide (PEO) as the polymer electrolyte and carbon paper loaded with Pt/C catalyst as the anode. A mean ammonia production rate of 2.41 +/- 0.14 mu mol h(-1) cm(geo)(-2) and faradaic efficiency of 8.9 +/- 1.7% were obtained at a cell voltage of 3.6 V. Lower voltage loss (ca. 0.25 V@5 mA cm(geo)(-2)) was observed in the absence of ethanol. In situ X-ray diffraction (XRD), ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) measurements were performed to reveal the transformation of lithium deposits. This study offers a new route for LiNR with the advantages of efficient gas transfer, reduced solvent consumption and compact configuration.

Abstract:Electrosynthesis of ammonia from nitrate reduction receives extensive attention recently for its relatively mild conditions and clean energy requirements, while most existed electrochemical strategies can only deliver a low yield rate and short duration for the lack of stable ion exchange membranes at high current density. Here, a bipolar membrane nitrate reduction process is proposed to achieve ionic balance, and increasing water dissociation sites is delivered by constructing a three-dimensional physically interlocked interface for the bipolar membrane. This design simultaneously boosts ionic transfer and interfacial stability compared to traditional ones, successfully reducing transmembrane voltage to 1.13 V at up to current density of 1000 mA cm −2 . By combining a Co three-dimensional nanoarray cathode designed for large current and low concentration utilizations, a continuous and high yield bipolar membrane reactor for NH 3 electrosynthesis realized a stable electrolysis at 1000 mA cm −2 for over 100 h, Faradaic efficiency of 86.2% and maximum yield rate of 68.4 mg h −1 cm −2 with merely 2000 ppm NO 3 - alkaline electrolyte. These results show promising potential for artificial nitrogen cycling in the near future.
Direct in situ NMR observation of lithium plating, corrosion, nitridation and protonolysis for ammonia synthesis

Abstract:As a low-carbon and decentralized ammonia synthetic method, lithium-mediated electrochemical synthesis has shown promising efficiencies and reaction rates. Nevertheless, many mechanistic questions need to be addressed to optimize the process and in situ characterizations are in great need. Here we develop in situ NMR methodology that allows us to directly observe each reaction step of the catalytic cycle, including plating of metallic lithium and the concurrent corrosion, nitrogen splitting on lithium metal and protonolysis of lithium nitride. The in situ NMR methods are general and can be broadly applied for screening and understanding Li and beyond-Li catalysts for nitrogen splitting, accelerating the materials discovery for ammonia synthesis.

Abstract:Apart from its role as a main precursor of the synthetic fertiliser production, ammonia is likely to become an even more important chemical in the future due to its prospects as an energy carrier. (1) To meet the associated growing demand while meeting the CO 2 emission reductions targets, recent efforts have aimed to translate the conventional polluting NH 3 synthesis to low CO 2 emissions technology by supplying the Haber-Bosch reactors with H 2 derived from renewable-powered water electrolysis rather than steam methane reforming. (2) This solution will likely to be implemented in many NH 3 synthesis plants soon, but the most preferred future technology for green ammonia synthesis is through a 100% renewable-powered, one step electrochemical process involving nitrogen reduction at the cathode and water oxidation at the anode. However, the possibility of direct dinitrogen reduction with traditional heterogeneous catalysts in both aqueous and aprotic electrolyte solutions at practical rates and faradaic efficiencies is yet to be proven, (3, 4) which calls for investigations of alternative pathways. One prominent possibility, with clear practical prospects, is the indirect lithium redox mediated process in organic electrolytes, which has been evidenced as genuine and by far the most efficient process to electrochemically convert N 2 to NH 3 . (5) However, several key challenges, including insufficiently high yield rate and faradaic efficiency as well as instability of the system, are yet to be resolved before the lithium-mediated nitrogen reduction reaction (Li-NRR) can be considered a process of applied significance. Our first step towards this aim was to introduce a stable phosphonium cation/ylide proton shuttle that delivers protons to the cathode to support rapid and controllable conversion of lithium nitride into ammonia. (6) It was demonstrated that phosphonium cation provides favourable proton activity in the system, which enables high Li-NRR faradaic efficiency of 69 ± 1 %. Moreover, the phosphonium shuttle exhibits high stability under the reaction conditions, i.e. was genuinely able to cycle between anode and cathode without being consumed. Our further efforts have focussed on understanding the effects of the electrolyte-electrode environment on the Li-NRR kinetics. As a result of this investigation, a system configuration that enables the electroreduction of N 2 to ammonia at a faradaic efficiency closely approaching 100% was discovered. Moreover, the synthesis can run in both uninterrupted and interrupted regimes on a timescale of days. The rate of ammonia electrosynthesis in the Li-NRR with the optimised electrode-electrolyte interface can achieve as high as ca 500 nmol s -1 cm -2 (per geometric electrode surface area) with electrodes of cm 2 scale. Finally, we examined the degradation of the electrolyte solution components during the high-performance Li-NRR. It was found that the major source of these undesired processes are the anode processes rather than the cathode. This highlights the urgent need for the development of effective H 2 - or H 2 O-feed anodes that can be integrated with the lithium mediated process. This and other future challenges on our way towards achieving sustainable and stabile NH 3 electrosynthesis system to support the development of the Ammonia Economy will be highlighted. D. R.
