Abstract:The aim of this paper is to describe and discuss the experience of HIV disease in Central Middlesex Hospital, London up to June 1993. A retrospective study of the total number of HIV-positive patients cared for was performed. In addition, prospectively collected data as part of local epidemiological surveillance from January 1987 to June 1993 on all HIV test requests was analysed. Between January 1987 and June 1993 3695 individuals were tested for HIV-1 antibody at Central Middlesex Hospital. Of these, 101 HIV-1 seropositive individuals were identified and have attended this District General Hospital. Seven HIV-1 seropositive individuals were identified from before December 1986. Sixty (56%) had acquired their infection heterosexually. Thirty-eight (35%) originated from the UK and 47 (44%) from sub-Saharan Africa; the remaining 23 (21%) originated from the rest of Europe, South America and the Caribbean. Thirty-four (31%) of the patient group developed AIDS during follow-up at the hospital and in 26 individuals AIDs developed within 2 months of their first positive HIV result. The mean survival of 20 patients after AIDS-defining diagnoses was 7 months 18 days. This unselected group of HIV-1 seropositive patients present late in the course of their HIV disease and survival following AIDS is poor.

Abstract:Growth factors, such as epidermal growth factor (EGF), have been suggested to mediate local effects of steroid hormones within female reproductive tissue. In the present study, the influence of estrogen on the expression and bioactivity of the EGF receptor (EGF-R) system was investigated in pigs. Oviducal and endometrial tissue from gilts was analysed either at two different time points after ovulation (Day 12 and Day 20), or from ovariectomized animals, with or without steroid-replacement treatment. Estrogen receptor protein concentrations were significantly down-regulated both in oviducal and endometrial tissue under estrogen-influence, in contrast to increased progesterone receptor concentrations. Transcript levels of EGF and transforming growth factor alpha remained unchanged in both the oviduct and endometrium during treatment. Oviducal EGF-R mRNA was found to be increased after estradiol treatment with concurrent increases in EGF-R protein. However, in endometrial tissue of estradiol-substituted ovariectomized pigs, the receptor transcript was significantly reduced, indicating a different regulation of EGF-R transcription within the endometrium. The bioactivity of the EGF-R, analysed by tyrosine kinase assays, was preserved throughout experiments in the porcine oviduct and endometrium without obvious changes caused by the steroids. In conclusion, estradiol may play a key role during the proliferation and differentiation of porcine oviducal tissue by activating the important paracrine or autocrine EGF system through its receptor. The cell-specific influence of progesterone during regulation of the EGF-R expression in the endometrium requires further investigation.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION Many women in industrialized countries return to work while their children are infants. This is often associated with decreased breastfeeding duration or exclusivity. In order to better understand the breastfeeding support activities in childcare settings, studies were undertaken in settings with very different levels of infant mortality, breastfeeding, and breastfeeding support: Adelaide, Australia, and Wake County, North Carolina. The researchers collaborated to explore, contrast, and compare their baseline data. METHODS Available data on breastfeeding rates and infant mortality rates were explored for the two settings. In addition, the two childcare datasets were explored for common questions, and descriptive and χ(2) analyses were carried out. RESULTS Similarities were found between the response from childcare settings providers in Australia and the United States. Rates of having at least one breastfeeding infant (70.6% vs. 66.3%), a place to breastfeed (90.7% vs. 95%), and a refrigerator for storage (100% vs. 100%) were similar for Adelaide and Wake County, respectively. Qualitative data from Adelaide also mirrored Wake County data in that providers in neither setting were actively promoting breastfeeding. However, the Adelaide data reflected significantly higher rates of encouragement (95.3% vs. 21.7%), written policy (77.8% vs. 20.8%), resource/materials distribution (76.6% vs. 1% and 93.8% vs. 17%), and training (44.4% vs. 13.9%). CONCLUSIONS Childcare practices may reflect the environment of support, or lack thereof, for breastfeeding in the society as a whole. The similarities and differences seen in these settings may reflect both official guidance as well as the breastfeeding environment. There is much work to be done in the United States to come up to the same level of support for breastfeeding in child care and in other programs as is seen in Australia.

Abstract:Exclusive dijet production at the Tevatron can be used as a benchmark to establish predictions on exclusive diffractive Higgs production, a process with a much smaller cross section. Exclusive dijet production in Double Pomeron Exchange processes, including diffractive Higgs production with measurements at the Tevatron and predictions for the Large Hadron Collider are presented. Using new data from the Tevatron and dedicated diffractive triggers, no excess over a smooth falling distribution for exclusive dijet events could be found. Upper limits on the exclusive dijet production cross section are presented and compared to current theoretical predictions.

Abstract:Jets have been used to verify the theory of quantum chromodynamics (QCD), measure the structure of the proton and to search for the physics beyond the Standard Model. In this article, we review the current status of jet physics at the Tevatron, a sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV p-pbar collider at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. We report on recent measurements of the inclusive jet production cross section and the results of searches for physics beyond the Standard Model using jets. Dijet production measurements are also reported.

Abstract:Direct photon production at large transverse momentum in the coherent diffractive processes at hadron colliders is calculated in the two-gluon exchange model. We find that the amplitude for the production process is related to the differential off-diagonal gluon distribution function in the proton. We estimate the production rate at the Fermilab Tevatron by approximately using the usual gluon distribution function. Because of the clean signature, this process can be used to study in detail small-$x$ physics and the coherent diffractive processes at hadron colliders.

Abstract:We show that the hadroproduction of a pair of jets with large transverse energy in the central region bounded by rapidity gaps is an ideal process to see important double logarithmic QCD suppression effects. We compute the cross sections for both exclusive and inclusive double-diffractive dijet production at Fermilab Tevatron and CERN LHC energies for a range of rapidity configurations.

Abstract:We present a point-by-point determination of the valence transversity distributions from two different types of processes: single-hadron production and dihadron production, both in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering and e+e- annihilation. The extraction is based on some simple assumptions and does not require any parametrization. The transversity distributions obtained from Collins effect in single-hadron production and from interference effects in dihadron production are found to be compatible with each other.

Abstract:The comparison of the kinematic properties of different Vector Boson Scattering (VBS) and Vector Boson Fusion (VBF) processes using multivariate discriminator is presented. The search is performed to identify common features in the the polarized $W^{\pm}W^{\pm}jj$ channel, mainly central and forward region jets kinematic variables such as eta, phi, mass and transverse energy, in order to determine some universal cuts. Traditionally boosted decision trees (BDT) are used as multivariate discriminator. The presented results are based on proton-proton collision Monte Carlo (MC) simulation samples center-of-mass energy 14 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3000 $fb^{-1}$. MC samples are generated using MADGRAPH and PYTHIA.

Abstract:Selected quantum chromodynamics (QCD) measurements performed at the Fermilab Run II Tevatron ppbar collider running at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV by CDF and D0 Collaborations are presented. The inclusive jet, dijet production and three-jet cross section measurements are used to test perturbative QCD calculations, constrain parton distribution function (PDF) determinations, and extract a precise value of the strong coupling constant, alpha_s(m_Z) = 0.1161^{+0.0041}_{-0.0048}. Inclusive photon production cross-section measurements reveal an inability of next-to-leading-order (NLO) perturbative QCD (pQCD) calculations to describe low-energy photons arising directly in the hard scatter. The diphoton production cross-sections check the validity of the NLO pQCD predictions, soft-gluon resummation methods implemented in theoretical calculations, and contributions from the parton-to-photon fragmentation diagrams. Events with W/Z+jets productions are used to measure many kinematic distributions allowing extensive tests and tunes of predictions from pQCD NLO and Monte-Carlo event generators. The charged-particle transverse momenta (pT) and multiplicity distributions in the inclusive minimum bias events are used to tune non-perturbative QCD models, including those describing the multiple parton interactions (MPI). Events with inclusive production of photon and 2 or 3 jets are used to study increasingly important MPI phenomenon at high pT, measure an effective interaction cross section, sigma_eff = 16.4+- 2.3 mb, and limit existing MPI models.

Abstract:We compare the recent measurements of gap between jets at the Tevatron and the LHC with the Balitski Fadin Kuraev Lipatov framework. While a good agreement is obtained with Tevatron data, some discrepancies especially for the rapidity separation between jets are found that can be explained by an excess of initial state radiation in PYTHIA.

Abstract:We present measurements of the transverse momentum distribution of W and Z bosons produced in pbar p collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV. The data were collected with the D0 detector at Fermilab during 1994-1996 Tevatron run. The results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions based on the perturbative QCD and soft gluon resummation combined calculation over the entire measured pt range p_T = 0-200 GeV/c).

Abstract:We report new results from CDF on single-diffractive dijet and W/Z production, and on exclusive dijet, diphoton, and dilepton production in proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron. Abstract:We study the transverse momentum distribution of hadrons within jets, where the transverse momentum is defined with respect to the standard jet axis. We consider the case where the jet substructure measurement is performed for an inclusive jet sample pp → jet + X. We demonstrate that this observable provides new opportunities to study transverse momentum dependent fragmentation functions (TMDFFs) which are currently poorly constrained from data, especially for gluons. The factorization of the cross section is obtained within Soft Collinear Effective Theory (SCET), and we show that the relevant TMDFFs are the same as for the more traditional processes semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) and electron-positron annihilation. Different than in SIDIS, the observable for the in-jet fragmentation does not depend on TMD parton distribution functions which allows for a cleaner and more direct probe of TMDFFs. We present numerical results and compare to available data from the LHC.

Abstract:This paper reviews results of beyond-the-standard model searches at the Tevatron presented in a plenary talk at the Europhysics Conference on High Energy Physics (EPS-HEP) in Grenoble. Here I present a selection of results from the CDF and D0 experiments that were shown at the conference during the parallel sessions. Much more is available and can be found at the experiment's web pages. This proceeding essentially focuses on searches in the dilepton, diboson, and t-tbar final states. Throughout the paper, hints of new physics observed at the Tevatron are also briefly discussed.

Abstract:The energy measurement of jets produced by b-quarks at hadron colliders suffers from biases due to the peculiarities of the hadronization and decay of the originating B hadron. The impact of these effects can be estimated by reconstructing the mass of Z boson decays into pairs of b-quark jets. From a sample of 584 pb-1 of data collected by the CDF experiment in 1.96 TeV proton-antiproton collisions at the Tevatron collider, we show how the Z signal can be identified and measured. Using the reconstructed mass of Z candidates we determine a jet energy scale factor for b-quark jets with a precision better than 2%. This measurement allows a reduction of one of the dominant source of uncertainty in analyses based on high transverse momentum b-quark jets. We also determine, as a cross-check of our analysis, the Z boson cross section in hadronic collisions using the b-bbar final state as sigma x B(Z->b-bbar) = 1578 +636 -410 pb.

Abstract:We report on recent Z (+jets) measurements from the Fermilab Tevatron proton anti-proton collider. A new D0 measurement of the transverse momentum of Z bosons yields the best measurement to date of the non-perturbative form factor, g2. The production of Z+jets is an major background to many rare signals, and is a vital testing ground for theoretical predictions. Measurements from CDF and D0 of differential cross sections in Z+jet production test NLO pQCD, and in the case of D0, the latest tree-level matrix element with matched parton shower calculations. Improving modelling of this signal will impact results from the Fermilab Tevatron and CERN LHC.

Abstract:The CDF and D0 experiments at the Tevatron $p\bar{p}$ collider established that extensive and detailed exploration of the b-quark dynamics is possible in hadron collisions, with results competitive and supplementary to B-factories. In this paper we review the current state of Tevatron's heavy flavor measurements considering two main categories: searches for non standard model physics (results on rare decays and CP-violation) and determinations of standard model parameters (annihilation in $B \to h^+ h^-$ decays and $\gamma$ angle measurement through $B\to DK$ modes).
