Abstract:The aim of this paper is to describe and discuss the experience of HIV disease in Central Middlesex Hospital, London up to June 1993. A retrospective study of the total number of HIV-positive patients cared for was performed. In addition, prospectively collected data as part of local epidemiological surveillance from January 1987 to June 1993 on all HIV test requests was analysed. Between January 1987 and June 1993 3695 individuals were tested for HIV-1 antibody at Central Middlesex Hospital. Of these, 101 HIV-1 seropositive individuals were identified and have attended this District General Hospital. Seven HIV-1 seropositive individuals were identified from before December 1986. Sixty (56%) had acquired their infection heterosexually. Thirty-eight (35%) originated from the UK and 47 (44%) from sub-Saharan Africa; the remaining 23 (21%) originated from the rest of Europe, South America and the Caribbean. Thirty-four (31%) of the patient group developed AIDS during follow-up at the hospital and in 26 individuals AIDs developed within 2 months of their first positive HIV result. The mean survival of 20 patients after AIDS-defining diagnoses was 7 months 18 days. This unselected group of HIV-1 seropositive patients present late in the course of their HIV disease and survival following AIDS is poor.

Abstract:Growth factors, such as epidermal growth factor (EGF), have been suggested to mediate local effects of steroid hormones within female reproductive tissue. In the present study, the influence of estrogen on the expression and bioactivity of the EGF receptor (EGF-R) system was investigated in pigs. Oviducal and endometrial tissue from gilts was analysed either at two different time points after ovulation (Day 12 and Day 20), or from ovariectomized animals, with or without steroid-replacement treatment. Estrogen receptor protein concentrations were significantly down-regulated both in oviducal and endometrial tissue under estrogen-influence, in contrast to increased progesterone receptor concentrations. Transcript levels of EGF and transforming growth factor alpha remained unchanged in both the oviduct and endometrium during treatment. Oviducal EGF-R mRNA was found to be increased after estradiol treatment with concurrent increases in EGF-R protein. However, in endometrial tissue of estradiol-substituted ovariectomized pigs, the receptor transcript was significantly reduced, indicating a different regulation of EGF-R transcription within the endometrium. The bioactivity of the EGF-R, analysed by tyrosine kinase assays, was preserved throughout experiments in the porcine oviduct and endometrium without obvious changes caused by the steroids. In conclusion, estradiol may play a key role during the proliferation and differentiation of porcine oviducal tissue by activating the important paracrine or autocrine EGF system through its receptor. The cell-specific influence of progesterone during regulation of the EGF-R expression in the endometrium requires further investigation.
Measurement of the Forward-Backward Asymmetry in the Distribution of Leptons Intt¯events in Thelepton+jetschannel

Abstract:We present measurements of the forward-backward asymmetry in the angular distribution of leptons from decays of top quarks and antiquarks produced in proton-antiproton collisions. We consider the final state containing a lepton and at least three jets. The entire sample of data collected by the D0 experiment during Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, corresponding to 9.7 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity, is used. The asymmetry measured for reconstructed leptons is A(FB)(l) = (2.9 +/- 2.1(stat.)(-1.7)(+1.5) (syst.))%. When corrected for efficiency and resolution effects within the lepton rapidity coverage of vertical bar y(l)vertical bar < 1.5, the asymmetry is found to be A(FB)(l) = (4.2 +/- 2.3(stat.)(-2.0)(+1.7) (syst.))%. We examine the dependence of A(FB)(l) on the transverse momentum and rapidity of the lepton. Combination with the asymmetry measured in the final states containing two leptons yields A(FB)(l) = (4.2 +/- 2.0(stat.) +/- 1.4(syst.))%. The results are in agreement with predictions from the next-to-leading-order QCD generator MC@NLO, which predicts an asymmetry of A(FB)(l) = 2.0% for vertical bar y(l)vertical bar < 1.5.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION Many women in industrialized countries return to work while their children are infants. This is often associated with decreased breastfeeding duration or exclusivity. In order to better understand the breastfeeding support activities in childcare settings, studies were undertaken in settings with very different levels of infant mortality, breastfeeding, and breastfeeding support: Adelaide, Australia, and Wake County, North Carolina. The researchers collaborated to explore, contrast, and compare their baseline data. METHODS Available data on breastfeeding rates and infant mortality rates were explored for the two settings. In addition, the two childcare datasets were explored for common questions, and descriptive and χ(2) analyses were carried out. RESULTS Similarities were found between the response from childcare settings providers in Australia and the United States. Rates of having at least one breastfeeding infant (70.6% vs. 66.3%), a place to breastfeed (90.7% vs. 95%), and a refrigerator for storage (100% vs. 100%) were similar for Adelaide and Wake County, respectively. Qualitative data from Adelaide also mirrored Wake County data in that providers in neither setting were actively promoting breastfeeding. However, the Adelaide data reflected significantly higher rates of encouragement (95.3% vs. 21.7%), written policy (77.8% vs. 20.8%), resource/materials distribution (76.6% vs. 1% and 93.8% vs. 17%), and training (44.4% vs. 13.9%). CONCLUSIONS Childcare practices may reflect the environment of support, or lack thereof, for breastfeeding in the society as a whole. The similarities and differences seen in these settings may reflect both official guidance as well as the breastfeeding environment. There is much work to be done in the United States to come up to the same level of support for breastfeeding in child care and in other programs as is seen in Australia.

Abstract:Higgs boson and massive-graviton plus two jet productions via vector-boson fusion (VBF) processes at hadron colliders are studied. They include scalar and tensor boson production processes via weak-boson fusion in quark-quark collisions, gluon fusion in quark-quark, quark-gluon and gluon-gluon collisions. We show that the VBF amplitudes dominate the exact matrix elements not only for the weak-boson fusion processes but also for all the gluon fusion processes when selection cuts to enhance the VBF events are applied, such as a large rapidity separation between two jets.

Abstract:We study the azimuthal angular decorrelation of the dijet production via photon fusion in ultra-peripheral heavy ion collisions. The impact parameter dependent cross section of quark-antiquark pairs production is derived using the equivalent photon approximation, and the contribution from final-state QCD radiations to the azimuthal angular distribution are calculated within Soft-Collinear Effective Theory. We carry out the QCD resummation of large logarithms of the azimuthal angle as well as the jet radius at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. In the end we present the normalized differential cross section for azimuthal decorrelation of the dijet pair and find that our results are consistent with the measurements reported by the ATLAS collaboration.

Abstract:The azimuthal angular decorrelation of a vector boson and jet is sensitive to QCD radiation, and can be used to probe the quark-gluon plasma in heavy-ion collisions. By using a recoil-free jet definition, the sensitivity to contamination from soft radiation on the measurement is reduced, and the complication of non-global logarithms is eliminated from our theoretical calculation. Specifically we will consider the $p_T^n$ recombination scheme, as well as the $n\to \infty$ limit, known as the winner-take-all scheme. These jet definitions also significantly simplify the calculation for a track-based measurement, which is preferred due to its superior angular resolution. We present a detailed discussion of the factorization in Soft-Collinear Effective Theory, revealing why the transverse momentum $\vec q_T$ is more complicated than the azimuthal angle. We show that potential glauber contributions do not spoil our factorization formalism, at least up to and including order $\alpha_s^3$. The resummation is carried out using the renormalization group, and all necessary ingredients are collected or calculated. We conclude with a detailed phenomenological study, finding an enhanced matching correction for high jet $p_T$ due to the electroweak collinear enhancement of a boson emission off di-jets. We also compare with the Pythia event generator, finding that our observable is very robust to hadronization and the underlying event.

Abstract:We describe new QCD fits to diffractive cross sections measured at HERA and we use the parton densities derived from these fits to predict the shape of the dijet mass fraction in double Pomeron exchange at the Tevatron. We discuss the existence of exclusive events in this dijet channel and some prospects are given for the LHC.

Abstract:We present the first carrier-envelope-phase stable chirped-pulse amplifier (CPA) featuring high temporal contrast for relativistic intensity laser-plasma interactions at 1 kHz repetition rate. The laser is based on a double-CPA architecture including cross-polarized wave (XPW) filtering technique and a high-energy grism-based compressor. The 8 mJ, 22 fs pulses feature 10⁻¹¹ temporal contrast at -20 ps and a carrier-envelope-phase drift of 240 mrad root mean square.

Abstract:We show that the hadroproduction of a pair of jets with large transverse energy in the central region bounded by rapidity gaps is an ideal process to see important double logarithmic QCD suppression effects. We compute the cross sections for both exclusive and inclusive double-diffractive dijet production at Fermilab Tevatron and CERN LHC energies for a range of rapidity configurations.

High-$p_T$ Azimuthal Correlations of Z+jet and Multi-jet Production

Abstract:In this study, we present our latest findings regarding azimuthal distributions in vector boson + jets and multi-jet production at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). These findings result from matching next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative matrix elements with transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton branching. We conduct a comprehensive comparative analysis of azimuthal correlations between Z boson-jet and jet-jet systems in the back-to-back region. These distinct azimuthal correlation patterns can help identify potential factorization-breaking effects in this region. Such effects depend on the different color and spin structures of the final states and their interactions with the initial states.

Abstract:The energy measurement of jets produced by b-quarks at hadron colliders suffers from biases due to the peculiarities of the hadronization and decay of the originating B hadron. The impact of these effects can be estimated by reconstructing the mass of Z boson decays into pairs of b-quark jets. From a sample of 584 pb-1 of data collected by the CDF experiment in 1.96 TeV proton-antiproton collisions at the Tevatron collider, we show how the Z signal can be identified and measured. Using the reconstructed mass of Z candidates we determine a jet energy scale factor for b-quark jets with a precision better than 2%. This measurement allows a reduction of one of the dominant source of uncertainty in analyses based on high transverse momentum b-quark jets. We also determine, as a cross-check of our analysis, the Z boson cross section in hadronic collisions using the b-bbar final state as sigma x B(Z->b-bbar) = 1578 +636 -410 pb.

Abstract:The CDF and D0 experiments at the Tevatron $p\bar{p}$ collider established that extensive and detailed exploration of the b-quark dynamics is possible in hadron collisions, with results competitive and supplementary to B-factories. In this paper we review the current state of Tevatron's heavy flavor measurements considering two main categories: searches for non standard model physics (results on rare decays and CP-violation) and determinations of standard model parameters (annihilation in $B \to h^+ h^-$ decays and $\gamma$ angle measurement through $B\to DK$ modes).

Abstract:We study the azimuthal asymmetries in back-to-back leptoproduction of $D$-meson and jet to probe the gluon TMDs in an unpolarized and transversely polarized electron-proton collision at the kinematics of EIC. We give predictions for unpolarized cross-sections within the TMD factorization framework. In $D$-meson and jet formation, the only leading order contribution comes from the photon gluon fusion process. We give numerical estimates of the upper bound on the azimuthal asymmetries with the saturation of positivity bounds; also, we present the asymmetries using a Gaussian parameterization of TMDs. We obtain sizable asymmetries in the kinematics that will be accessible at EIC.

Vector quarkonia at the LHC with JETHAD: A high-energy viewpoint

Abstract:In this review we discuss and extend the study of the inclusive production of vector quarkonia, $J/\psi$ and $\Upsilon$, emitted with large transverse momenta and rapidities at the LHC. We adopt the novel ZCW19$^+$ determination to depict the quarkonium production mechanism at the next-to-leading level of perturbative QCD. This approach is based on the nonrelativistic QCD formalism well adapted to describe the production of a quarkonium state from the collinear fragmentation of a gluon or a constituent heavy quark at the lowest energy scale. We rely upon the NLL/NLO$^+$ hybrid high-energy and collinear factorization for differential cross sections, where the standard collinear formalism is enhanced by the BFKL resummation of next-to-leading energy logarithms arising in the $t$-channel. We employ the JETHAD method to analyze the behavior of rapidity distributions for double inclusive vector-quarkonium and inclusive vector-quarkonium plus jet emissions. We discovered that the natural stability of the high-energy series, previously observed in observables sensitive to the emission of hadrons with heavy flavor detected in the rapidity acceptance of LHC barrel calorimeters, becomes even more manifest when these particles are tagged in forward regions covered by endcaps. Our findings brace the important message that vector quarkonia at the LHC via the hybrid factorization offer a unique chance to perform precision studies of high-energy QCD, as well as an intriguing opportunity to shed light on the quarkonium production puzzle.

Abstract:Direct photon production at large transverse momentum in the coherent diffractive processes at hadron colliders is calculated in the two-gluon exchange model. We find that the amplitude for the production process is related to the differential off-diagonal gluon distribution function in the proton. We estimate the production rate at the Fermilab Tevatron by approximately using the usual gluon distribution function. Because of the clean signature, this process can be used to study in detail small-$x$ physics and the coherent diffractive processes at hadron colliders.

Abstract:Exclusive dijet production at the Tevatron can be used as a benchmark to establish predictions on exclusive diffractive Higgs production, a process with a much smaller cross section. Exclusive dijet production in Double Pomeron Exchange processes, including diffractive Higgs production with measurements at the Tevatron and predictions for the Large Hadron Collider are presented. Using new data from the Tevatron and dedicated diffractive triggers, no excess over a smooth falling distribution for exclusive dijet events could be found. Upper limits on the exclusive dijet production cross section are presented and compared to current theoretical predictions.
Diffractive Light Quark Jet and Gluon Jet Production at Hadron Colliders in the Two-Gluon Exchange Model

Abstract:Massless diquark jet and gluon jet productions at large transverse momentum in the coherent diffractive processes at hadron colliders are studied in the two-gluon exchange parametrization of the Pomeron model. We use the helicity amplitude method to calculate the cross section formulas. We find that for the light quark jet and gluon jet production the diffractive process is related to t he differential off-diagonal gluon distribution function in the proton. We estimate the production rate for these processes at the Fermilab Tevatron by approximating the off-diagonal gluon distribution function by the usual diagonal gluon distribution in the proton. We also use the helicity amplitude method to calculate the diffractive charm jet production at hadron colliders, by which we reproduce the leading logarithmic approximation result of this process we previously calculated.

Abstract:The production of lepton pairs (Drell-Yan process) at the LHC is being measured to high precision, enabling the extraction of distributions that are triply differential in the di-lepton mass and rapidity as well as in the scattering angle described by the leptons. The measurements are performed for a fiducial phase space, defined by cuts on the individual lepton momenta and rapidities. Based on the ATLAS triple-differential Drell-Yan measurement at 8~TeV, we perform a detailed investigation of the phenomenology of this process based on state-of-the-art perturbative predictions in QCD and the electroweak theory. Our results demonstrate the highly non-trivial interplay between measurement variables and fiducial cuts, which leads to forbidden regions at Born level, and induces sensitivity on extra particle emissions from higher perturbative orders. We also investigate the sensitivity of the measurement on parton distributions and electroweak parameters. We derive Standard-Model theory predictions which combine NNLO QCD and NLO EW corrections and include partial N$^3$LO QCD as well as higher-order EW corrections where appropriate. Our results will enable the use of the triple-differential Drell-Yan data in a precise experimental determination of the weak mixing angle.
