Abstract:We numerically investigate the gravitational waves generated by the head-on collision of equal-mass, self-gravitating, real scalar field solitons (oscillatons) as a function of their compactness $\mathcal{C}$. We show that there exist three different possible outcomes for such collisions: (1) an excited stable oscillaton for low $\mathcal{C}$, (2) a merger and formation of a black-hole for intermediate $\mathcal{C}$, and (3) a pre-merger collapse of both oscillatons into individual black-holes for large $\mathcal{C}$. For (1), the excited, aspherical oscillaton continues to emit gravitational waves. For (2), the total energy in gravitational waves emitted increases with compactness, and possesses a maximum which is greater than that from the merger of a pair of equivalent mass black-holes. The initial amplitudes of the quasi-normal modes in the post-merger ring-down in this case are larger than that of corresponding mass black-holes -- potentially a key observable to distinguish black-hole mergers with their scalar mimics. For (3), the gravitational wave output is indistinguishable from a similar mass, black-hole--black-hole merger.

High energy head-on particle collisions near event horizons: classifcation of scenarios

Abstract:We consider head-on collisions of two particles near the event horizon. Particle 1 is outgoing, particle 2 is ingoing. We elucidate, in which case the energy $E_{c.m.}$ in the center of mass frame can grow unbounded. If the proper time between the horizon and an arbitrary point outside it for particle 1 is finite, we deal with a white hole. If it is infinite, we deal with a black hole. Particles can be either free or experience the action of a finite force. Our results are complementary to those for the standard BSW effect when particles move in the same direction. The results rely on classification of particles developed in our previous work H.V. Ovcharenko, O.B. Zaslavskii, Phys. Rev. D 108, 064029 (2023).

The maximum radiated energy and final spin of high speed collision of two black holes

Abstract:We performed a series of 739 full numerical simulations of high energy collision of black holes to search for the maximum gravitational energy emitted $E_{rad}$, during their merger. We consider equal mass binaries with spins pointing along their orbital angular momentum $\vec{L}$ and perform a search over impact parameters $b$ and initial linear momenta $p/m=\gamma v$ to find the maximum $E_{rad}$ for a given spin $\vec{S}$. The total radiated energy proves to have a weak dependence on the intrinsic spin $s$ of the holes, for the sequence $s=+0.8, 0.0, -0.8$ studied here. We thus estimate the maximum $E_{rad}^{max}/M_{ADM}\approx25\%\pm2\%$ for these direct merger encounters. We also explore the radiated angular momentum and the maximum spin of the merger remnant (within these configurations), finding $\alpha_f^{max}=0.987$. We then use the zero frequency limit expansion to analytically model the radiated energy in the small impact parameter and large initial linear momentum regime.

Colliding gravitational waves and singularities

Abstract:We have investigated a model of colliding plain gravitational waves, proposed by Szekeres, whose structure of singularities is determined. We have evaluated a total energy of matter as a volume integral of the energy momentum tensor (EMT), whose contributions arise only at these singularities. The total matter energy is conserved before a collision of two plane gravitational waves but decreases during the collision and becomes zero at the end of the collision. We thus interpret that this model of colliding plane gravitational waves is a spacetime describing a pair annihilation of plan gravitational waves. We have also calculated a matter conserved charge proposed by the present author and his collaborators. The matter charge is indeed conserved but is zero due to a cancellation between two plain gravitational waves. This seems natural since nothing remains after a pair annihilation, and give a hint on a physical interpretation of the conserved charge, which we call the gravitational charge. By modifying the space time for the pair annihilation, we newly construct two types of a scattering plane gravitational wave and a pair creation of plane gravitational waves, and combining all, a Minkowski vacuum bottle, a Minkowski spacetime surrounded by two moving plane gravitational waves.

Comparisons of binary black hole merger waveforms

Abstract:This a particularly exciting time for gravitational wave physics. Ground-based gravitational wave detectors are now operating at a sensitivity such that gravitational radiation may soon be directly detected, and recently several groups have independently made significant breakthroughs that have finally enabled numerical relativists to solve the Einstein field equations for coalescing black-hole binaries, a key source of gravitational radiation. The numerical relativity community is now in the position to begin providing simulated merger waveforms for use by the data analysis community, and it is therefore very important that we provide ways to validate the results produced by various numerical approaches. Here, we present a simple comparison of the waveforms produced by two very different, but equally successful approaches--the generalized harmonic gauge and the moving puncture methods. We compare waveforms of equal-mass black hole mergers with minimal or vanishing spins. The results show exceptional agreement for the final burst of radiation, with some differences attributable to small spins on the black holes in one case.

Abstract:We consider collision of two massive particles in the equatorial plane of an axially symmetric stationary spacetime that produces two massless particles afterwards. It is implied that the horizon is absent but there is a naked singularity or another potential barrier that makes possible the head-on collision. The relationship between the energy in the center of mass frame Ec.m.$$E_{c.m.}$$ and the Killing energy E measured at infinity is analyzed. It follows immediately from the Wald inequalities that unbounded E is possible for unbounded Ec.m.$$E_{c.m.}$$ only. This can be realized if the spacetime is close to the threshold of the horizon formation. Different types of spacetimes (black holes, naked singularities, wormholes) correspond to different possible relations between Ec.m.$$E_{c.m.}$$ and E. We develop a general approach that enables us to describe the collision process in the frames of the stationary observer and zero angular momentum observer. The escape cone and escape fraction are derived. A simple explanation of the existence of the bright spot is given. For the particular case of the Kerr metric, our results agree with the previous ones found in Patil et al. (Phys Rev D 93:104015, 2016).

Abstract:If two ultrarelativistic nonrotating black holes of masses and approach each other with fixed center-of-momentum (COM) total energy that has a corresponding Schwarzschild radius much larger than the Schwarzschild radii of the individual black holes, here it is conjectured that at the critical impact parameter between scattering and coalescing into a single black hole, there will be an inspiral of many orbital rotations for and before a final black hole forms, during which all of the initial kinetic energy will be radiated away in gravitational waves by the time the individual black holes coalesce and settle down to a stationary state. In the massless limit , in which the black holes are replaced by classical massless point particles, it is conjectured that for the critical impact parameter, all of the total energy will be radiated away by the time the two particle worldlines merge and end. One might also conjecture that in the limit of starting with the massless particles having infinite energy in the infinite past with the correct ratio of impact parameter to energy, the spacetime for retarded time before the final worldline merger at zero energy will have a homothetic vector field and hence be self similar. Evidence against these conjectures is also discussed, and if it proves correct, I conjecture that two massless particles can form any number of black holes.

Abstract:We have numerically investigated close scattering processes of two black holes (BHs). Our careful analysis shows for the first time a nonmerging ringdown gravitational wave induced by dynamical tidal deformations of individual BHs during their close encounter. The ringdown wave frequencies turn out to agree well with the quasinormal ones of a single BH in perturbation theory, despite its distinctive physical context from the merging case. Near-Horizon Collisions around Near-Extremal Black Holes

Abstract:Black holes have sometimes been described as astrophysical particle accelerators because finite energy particles can collide near the horizon with divergent center-of-mass (CM) energy. The collisions are classified by the radial motion of the constituent particles at the moment of collision, with each class exhibiting a distinct near-horizon behavior. Divergence in the CM energy is sourced by the difference in the rate at which the collision radius approaches the horizon and the rate at which a particle's angular momentum is tuned to a critical value set by the superradiant bound. To produce a high energy collision around a near-extremal BH, at least one particle must approach criticality slower than the collision radius approaches the horizon. When both particles are ingoing or outgoing, it is additionally required that the particles approach criticality at different rates. Using a novel multi-scaling limit, we calculate the explicit form for the divergent CM energy.

On-Shell Approach to Black Hole Mergers

Abstract:We develop an on-shell approach to study black hole mergers. Since, asymptotically, the initial and final states can be described by point-like spinning particles, we propose a massive three-point amplitude for the merger of two Schwarzschild black holes into a Kerr black hole. This three-point amplitude and the spectral function of the final state are fully determined by kinematics and the model-independent input about the black hole merger which is described by a complete absorption process. Using the Kosower-Maybee-O'Connell (KMOC) formalism, we then reproduce the classical conservation laws for momentum and angular momentum after the merger. As an application, we use the proposed three-point to compute the graviton emission amplitude, from which we extract the merger waveform to all orders in spin but leading in gravitational coupling. Up to sub-subleading order in spin, this matches the classical soft graviton theorem. We conclude with a comparison to black hole perturbation theory, which gives complementary amplitudes which are non-perturbative in the gravitational coupling but to leading order in the extreme mass ratio limit. This also highlights how boundary conditions on a Schwarzschild background can be used to rederive the proposed on-shell amplitudes for merger processes.

Black hole-neutron star binaries with high spins and large mass asymmetries: I. Properties of quasi-equilibrium sequences

Abstract:Black hole - neutron star (BHNS) mergers are a promising target of current gravitational-wave (GW) and electromagnetic (EM) searches, being the putative origin of ultra-relativistic jets, gamma-ray emission, and r-process nucleosynthesis. However, the possibility of any EM emission accompanying a GW detection crucially depends on the amount of baryonic mass left after the coalescence, i.e. whether the neutron star (NS) undergoes a `tidal disruption' or `plunges' into the black hole (BH) while remaining essentially intact. As the first of a series of two papers, we here report the most systematic investigation to date of quasi-equilibrium sequences of initial data across a range of stellar compactnesses $\mathcal{C}$, mass ratios $q$, BH spins $\chi_{_{\rm BH}}$, and equations of state satisfying all present observational constraints. Using an improved version of the elliptic initial-data solver FUKA, we have computed more than $1000$ individual configurations and estimated the onset of mass-shedding or the crossing of the innermost stable circular orbit in terms of the corresponding characteristic orbital angular velocities $\Omega_{_{\rm MS}}$ and $\Omega_{_{\rm ISCO}}$ as a function of $\mathcal{C}, q$, and $\chi_{_{\rm BH}}$. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that the dependence of these frequencies on the BH spin is investigated. In turn, by setting $\Omega_{_{\rm MS}} = \Omega_{_{\rm ISCO}}$ it is possible to determine the separatrix between the `tidal disruption' or `plunge' scenarios as a function of the fundamental parameters of these systems, namely, $q, \mathcal{C}$, and $\chi_{_{\rm BH}}$. Finally, we present a novel analysis of quantities related to the tidal forces in the initial data and discuss their dependence on spin and separation.

Binary Black Hole Coalescence Phenomenology from Numerical Relativity

Abstract:The major source of ground-based gravitational wave detectors, the inspiral and merger of comparable mass binary black holes (BBH), consists of a slow quasicircular inspiral, a merger to form a single remnant hole, and the quasinormal ringing of that remnant. The first and last of these epochs are amenable to well developed and familiar approximations: Newtonian or post-Newtonian for the first, and BH perturbation methods for the last. Ironically, the middle epoch, the merger, generates most of the GW emission, yet has been accessible so far only to numerical relativity. Here we add the close-limit approximation for the phenomenology of the merger. With the completed set of methods (Newtonian/post-Newtonian; close limit; BH perturbation theory) we show that not only can we understand the results of BBH coalescence, but - with reasonable accuracy - we can {\it predict} the resulting radiation and remnant.

Black hole-neutron star mergers in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

Abstract:Gravitational wave observations of black hole-neutron star binaries, particularly those where the black hole has a lower mass compared to other observed systems, have the potential to place strong constraints on modifications to general relativity that arise at small curvature length scales. Here we study the dynamics of black hole-neutron star mergers in shift-symmetric Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, a representative example of such a theory, by numerically evolving the full equations of motion. We consider quasi-circular binaries with different mass-ratios that are consistent with recent gravitational wave observations, including cases with and without tidal disruption of the star, and quantify the impact of varying the coupling controlling deviations from general relativity on the gravitational wave signal and scalar radiation. We find that the main effect on the late inspiral is the accelerated frequency evolution compared to general relativity, and that--even considering Gauss-Bonnet coupling values approaching those where the theory breaks down--the impact on the merger gravitational wave signal is mild, predominately manifesting as a small change in the amplitude of the ringdown. We compare our results to current post-Newtonian calculations and find consistency throughout the inspiral.

High-energy interactions of charged black holes in full general relativity II: Near-extremal merger remnants and universality with the irreducible mass

Abstract:In a previous paper, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2411.11960" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2411.11960">arXiv:2411.11960</a> [gr-qc], we initiated a study of high-energy interactions of charged binary black holes near the scattering threshold, focusing on zoom-whirl orbits. In this second paper in our series, we focus on merger remnant properties and energetics with new simulations of equal-mass, equal-charge, nonspinning binary black holes with variable impact parameter. We find near-extremal merger remnants with Kerr-Newman parameter reaching $\Upsilon_f = 0.97$, and observe that the maximum $\Upsilon_f$ increases monotonically with $\lambda$ for a fixed initial Lorentz factor. We find that binaries with larger $\lambda$ radiate less total energy despite having stronger electromagnetic emission. The maximum energy radiated by a binary in our study is $31\%$ of its gravitational mass. Increasing $\lambda$ has little effect on the maximum angular momentum radiated, which was $\approx 72\%$ of the spacetime total angular momentum for each $\lambda$ explored here. Lastly, we provide additional evidence for the universality with the irreducible mass that we discovered in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2411.11960" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2411.11960">arXiv:2411.11960</a> [gr-qc]. The black hole horizon areal radius determines a fundamental, gauge-invariant length scale governing BH interactions near the scattering threshold.

Microscopic State of BHs and an Exact One Body Method for Binary Dynamics in General Relativity

Abstract:In gravitational collapses, the horizon and singularity's realisation in the finite future of the proper time used co-moving observer happens in the future of infinitely far away future of the normal time used outside probe. To the latter the horizon and singularity of a black hole formed through gravitational collapse are physical realities only in the sense of uncertainty principle and ensemble interpretation. We provide two exact time dependent solution families to the Einstein equation and show that they form a pair of complementarity description for the microscopic state of black holes by showing that the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy formula follows properly from their canonical wave function's degeneracy. We also develop an eXact One Body method for general relativity two-body dynamics whose conservative part requires no perturbative input from post newtonian approximation and applies to the full three stages of black hole binary merger events. By this method, we analytically calculate the gravitational wave forms following from such merger processes. In the case black holes carry exact and apriori horizon and singularity our wave forms agree with those following from conventional effective one body method but exhibit more consistent late time behaviour. In the case the black holes carry only asymptotic horizon and extended inner structure thus experiencing banana shape deformation as the merger progresses, our wave forms exhibit all features especially the late time quasi-normal mode type oscillation seen in real observations.

Black hole-wormhole collisions and the emergence of islands

Abstract:We use ray-tracing techniques to determine the evolution of the event horizon of a large black hole that ``gobbles'' a tiny, traversable wormhole. This calculation has physical meaning in the extreme mass ratio limit. Two setups are considered: a single-mouth wormhole connecting two otherwise independent universes, and a double-mouth zero-length wormhole within the same universe. In the first setting it turns out that, at early times, there exist two disconnected horizons, one in each universe, which then merge as the wormhole falls into the large black hole. In the second setup, we observe the appearance of an `island', a region of spacetime that is spatially disconnected from the exterior of the black hole, but in causal contact with future null infinity. The island shrinks as time evolves and eventually disappears after sufficient time has elapsed, as compared to the distance between the two mouths. This provides a communication channel with the interior of the large black hole for a certain time interval. We compute numerically the lifetime of the island and verify that it depends linearly on the inter-mouth distance. Extending the analysis to wormholes with finite length, we show that the achronal averaged null energy condition prevents the appearance of islands.

Abstract:Black hole (BH) - neutron star (NS) binary mergers are not only strong sources of gravitational waves (GWs), but they are also candidates for joint detections in the GW and electromagnetic (EM) spectra. However, the possible emergence of an EM signal from these binaries is determined by a complex combination of the equation of state (EOS), the BH spin, and the mass ratio. In this second paper in a series, we present a systematic exploration of the possible space of binary parameters in terms of the mass ratio and BH spin so as to construct a complete description of the dynamical processes accompanying a BHNS binary merger. This second work relies not only on the initial data presented in the companion paper I, but also on the predictions via quasi-equilibrium (QE) sequences on the outcome of the binary. In this way, and for the first time, we are able to relate the predictions of QE analyses with the results of accurate general-relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations. In addition to a careful investigation of the evolution of the BH mass and spin as a result of the merger, the total remnant rest-mass of the resulting accretion disk and its properties, and of the corresponding post-merger GW emission, special attention is paid to the conditions that lead to tidal disruption. Leveraging QE calculations, we are able to verify the reliability of stringent predictions about the occurrence or not of a plunge and to measure the `strength' of the tidal disruption when it takes place. Finally, using a novel contraction of the Riemann tensor in a tetrad comoving with the fluid introduced in paper I, we are able to point out the onset of the instability to tidal disruption. This new diagnostic can be employed not only to determine the occurrence of the disruption, but also to characterize it in terms of the binary parameters.

Merging black holes with Cauchy-characteristic matching: Computation of late-time tails

Abstract:We present successful evolutions of binary black hole mergers using a novel numerical-relativity technique known as Cauchy-characteristic matching (CCM). This approach eliminates systematic errors associated with boundary conditions, effectively extending the computational domain to infinity. As an important application, we use CCM to resolve a late-time power-law tail in the gravitational wave from a head-on collision, and show that the tail is highly suppressed in a quasi-circular binary. Our results for the two extreme cases (orbital eccentricity $=0,1$) support the fact that tails increase with orbital eccentricity. Therefore, CCM paves the way for a detailed understanding of tails in eccentric systems. For the head-on case, we find that the tail behavior is consistent with predictions in the intermediate regime from black hole linear perturbation theory. However, we also raise the possibility that the power-law tail could be generated nonlinearly by quasinormal modes. The nonlinear contribution is expected to decay slower than predicted by Price's law, potentially dominating the signal at late times. If confirmed as nonlinear, this would be an example where nonlinearity prevails over linearity in the late-time regime of black hole dynamics.

Gravitational Bremsstrahlung in Black-Hole Scattering at $\mathcal{O}(G^3)$: Linear-in-Spin Effects

Abstract:We compute the far-field time-domain waveform of the gravitational waves produced in the scattering of two spinning massive objects. The results include linear-in-spin ($S$) couplings and first-order gravitational corrections ($G^3$), and are valid for encounters in the weak-field regime. Employing a field-theory framework based on the scattering of massive scalar and vector particles coupled to Einstein-Hilbert gravity, we derive results for leading and the next-to-leading spectral waveforms. We provide analytic expressions for the required scattering data, which include trees, one-loop amplitudes and their cuts. The expressions are extracted from numerical amplitude evaluations with the Caravel program, using analytic reconstruction techniques applied in the classical limit. We confirm a recent prediction for infrared physics of the classical observable, and observe the surprising appearance of a ultraviolet singularity, which drops out in the far-field waveform.

Nonlinear ringdown at the black hole horizon

Abstract:The gravitational waves emitted by a perturbed black hole ringing down are well described by damped sinusoids, whose frequencies are those of quasinormal modes. Typically, first-order black hole perturbation theory is used to calculate these frequencies. Recently, it was shown that second-order effects are necessary in binary black hole merger simulations to model the gravitational-wave signal observed by a distant observer. Here, we show that the horizon of a newly formed black hole after the head-on collision of two black holes also shows evidence of non-linear modes. Specifically, we identify one quadratic mode for the $l=2$ shear data, and two quadratic ones for the $l=4,6$ data in simulations with varying mass ratio and boost parameter. The quadratic mode amplitudes display a quadratic relationship with the amplitudes of the linear modes that generate them.
