Abstract:We have investigated a model of colliding plain gravitational waves, proposed by Szekeres, whose structure of singularities is determined. We have evaluated a total energy of matter as a volume integral of the energy momentum tensor (EMT), whose contributions arise only at these singularities. The total matter energy is conserved before a collision of two plane gravitational waves but decreases during the collision and becomes zero at the end of the collision. We thus interpret that this model of colliding plane gravitational waves is a spacetime describing a pair annihilation of plan gravitational waves. We have also calculated a matter conserved charge proposed by the present author and his collaborators. The matter charge is indeed conserved but is zero due to a cancellation between two plain gravitational waves. This seems natural since nothing remains after a pair annihilation, and give a hint on a physical interpretation of the conserved charge, which we call the gravitational charge. By modifying the space time for the pair annihilation, we newly construct two types of a scattering plane gravitational wave and a pair creation of plane gravitational waves, and combining all, a Minkowski vacuum bottle, a Minkowski spacetime surrounded by two moving plane gravitational waves.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problems that this paper attempts to solve are related to the conservation of matter - energy during the collision of two plane gravitational waves and the definition of energy in general relativity. Specifically:
1. **Problem of matter - energy conservation**: In general relativity, whether the total energy is always conserved is a complex issue. Normally, the time - translation symmetry in flat spacetime can define a corresponding energy density, and the total energy obtained through volume integration is conserved. However, in general relativity, the time - translation symmetry is part of the local symmetry, so Noether's theorem cannot be directly applied to define the conserved energy. In addition, due to the nonlinear terms in the covariant derivative, the conservation of the energy - momentum tensor (EMT) does not directly give the conserved energy or momentum.
2. **Gravitational - wave collision model**: The paper studies a plane - gravitational - wave collision model proposed by Szekeres, which has a definite singularity structure. By calculating the contribution of the matter - energy - momentum tensor at the singularity, the author explores the change in the total matter - energy before and after the collision. The research shows that the total matter - energy is conserved before the collision, but it will decrease during the collision and finally become zero at the end of the collision. This is interpreted as the pair - annihilation process of two plane gravitational waves.
3. **Generalized conserved charge**: Besides matter - energy, the author also defines a generalized conserved charge related to the energy - momentum tensor, called "gravitational charge". Although this conserved charge is conserved globally, its value is zero due to the mutual cancellation between the two plane gravitational waves. This result is consistent with the pair - annihilation process described by the geometric structure.
4. **New spacetime construction**: By modifying the collision model, the author constructs several new spacetime geometric structures, including scattered plane gravitational waves, pair - production of plane gravitational waves, and the "Minkowski vacuum bottle" that combines these processes, that is, the Minkowski spacetime surrounded by two moving plane gravitational waves.
In summary, this paper aims to explore the complexity of energy conservation in general relativity through a specific gravitational - wave collision model and proposes a new method of energy definition to better understand the physical phenomena in these dynamic processes.
