Abstract:This paper is concerned with the Cauchy problem for the relativistic membrane equation (RME) embedded in $\mathbb R^{1+(1+n)}$ with $n=2,3$. We show that the RME with a class of large (in energy norm) initial data admits a global, smooth solution. The initial data are given by the short pulse type, which is introduced by Christodoulou in his work on the formation of black holes [10]. Due to the quasilinear feature of RME, we construct two multipliers adapted to the geometry of membrane and present an efficient way for proving the global existence of smooth solution to the geometric wave equation with double null structure. We also derive the asymptotic geometry of the future null infinity and find out a nonlinear (expanding) effect at infinity.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the motion of relativistic strings in Schwarzschild space-time. In a general framework, we first analyze the basic equations for the motion of a [Formula: see text]-dimensional extended object in a general enveloping space-time [Formula: see text], which is a given Lorentzian manifold, and then we investigate some important properties enjoyed by the equations for the motion of relativistic strings in Schwarzschild space-time. In particular, the equations are shown to form a totally linearly degenerate system of first-order hyperbolic equations in [Formula: see text] dimensions. Based on this observation and under suitable assumptions, we are able to prove the global existence of smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem for the equations of motion of relativistic strings (in Schwarzschild space-time) with sufficiently small arc length.

Abstract:The membrane paradigm is the remarkable view that, to an external observer, a black hole appears to behave exactly like a dynamical fluid membrane, obeying such pre-relativistic equations as Ohm's law and the Navier-Stokes equation. It has traditionally been derived by manipulating the equations of motion. Here we provide an action formulation of this picture, clarifying what underlies the paradigm and simplifying the derivations. Within this framework, we derive previous membrane results, and extend them to dyonic black hole solutions. We discuss how it is that an action can produce dissipative equations. Using a Euclidean path integral, we show that familiar semi-classical thermodynamic properties of black holes also emerge from the membrane action. Finally, in a Hamiltonian description, we establish the validity of a minimum entropy production principle for black holes.

Abstract:The authors consider the local smooth solutions to the isentropic relativistic Euler equations in (3+1)-dimensional space-time for both non-vacuum and vacuum cases. The local existence is proved by symmetrizing the system and applying the Friedrichs-Lax-Kato theory of symmetric hyperbolic systems. For the non-vacuum case, according to Godunov, firstly a strictly convex entropy function is solved out, then a suitable symmetrizer to symmetrize the system is constructed. For the vacuum case, since the coefficient matrix blows-up near the vacuum, the authors use another symmetrization which is based on the generalized Riemann invariants and the normalized velocity.

Abstract:Classical energy-momentum methods study the existence and stability properties of solutions of $t$-dependent Hamilton equations on symplectic manifolds whose evolution is given by their Hamiltonian Lie symmetries. The points of such solutions are called relative equilibrium points. This work devises a new cosymplectic energy-momentum method providing a new and more general framework to study $t$-dependent Hamilton equations. In fact, cosymplectic geometry allows for using more types of distinguished Lie symmetries (given by Hamiltonian, gradient, or evolution vector fields), relative equilibrium points, and reduction methods, than symplectic techniques. To make our work more self-contained and to fill some gaps in the literature, a review of the cosymplectic formalism and the cosymplectic Marsden-Weinstein reduction is included. Known and new types of relative equilibrium points are characterised and studied. Our methods remove technical conditions used in previous energy-momentum methods, like the ${\rm Ad}^*$-equivariance of momentum maps. Eigenfunctions of $t$-dependent Schrödinger equations are interpreted in terms of relative equilibrium points in cosymplectic manifolds. A new cosymplectic-to-symplectic reduction is developed and a new associated type of relative equilibrium points, the so-called gradient relative equilibrium points, are introduced and applied to study the Lagrange points and Hill radii of a restricted circular three-body system by means of a not Hamiltonian Lie symmetry of the system.

Abstract:A few basic, intuitive, properties of the Navier-Stokes system of equations for incompressible fluid flows are discussed in this paper. We present a rephrased interpretation of the Navier-Stokes equation in a space having an arbitrary number of dimensions. We then derive spatially periodic solutions for the velocity and pressure fields that span an unbounded domain in three and four dimensions, given a smooth solenoidal initial velocity vector field. In these solutions all velocity components depend non-trivially on all coordinate directions.

Abstract:We consider the Riemann problem of three-dimensional relativistic Euler equations with two discontinuous initial states separated by a planar hypersurface. Based on the detailed analysis on the Riemann solutions, special relativistic effects are revealed, which are the variations of limiting relative normal velocities and intermediate states and thus the smooth transition of wave patterns when the tangential velocities in the initial states are suitably varied. While in the corresponding non-relativistic fluid, these special relativistic effects will not occur.

Abstract:The paper studies the equilibrium configurations of inextensible elastic membranes exhibiting lateral fluidity. Using a continuum description of the membrane's motions based on the surface Navier--Stokes equations with bending forces, the paper derives differential equations governing the mechanical equilibrium. The equilibrium conditions are found to be independent of lateral viscosity and relate tension, pressure, and tangential velocity of the fluid. These conditions suggest that either the lateral fluid motion ceases or non-decaying stationary flow of mass can only be supported by surfaces with Killing vector fields, such as axisymmetric shapes. A shape equation is derived that extends the classical Helfrich model with an area constraint to membranes of non-negligible mass. Furthermore, the paper suggests a simple numerical method to compute solutions of the shape equation. Numerical experiments conducted reveal a diverse family of equilibrium configurations. The stability of equilibrium states involving lateral flow of mass remains an unresolved question.

We prove that the time of classical existence of smooth solutions to the relativistic Euler equations can be bounded from below in terms of norms that measure the "(sound) wave-part" of the data in Sobolev space and "transport-part" in higher regularity Sobolev space and Hölder spaces. The solutions are allowed to have nontrivial vorticity and entropy. We use the geometric framework from [M. M. Disconzi and J. Speck, The relativistic Euler equations: Remarkable null structures and regularity properties, Ann. Henri Poincaré 20(7) (2019) 2173–2270], where the relativistic Euler flow is decomposed into a "wave-part", that is, geometric wave equations for the velocity components, density and enthalpy, and a "transport-part", that is, transport-div-curl systems for the vorticity and entropy gradient. Our main result is that the Sobolev norm [math] of the variables in the "wave-part" and the Hölder norm [math] of the variables in the "transport-part" can be controlled in terms of initial data for short times. We note that the Sobolev norm assumption [math] is the optimal result for the variables in the "wave-part". Compared to low-regularity results for quasilinear wave equations and the three-dimensional (3D) non-relativistic compressible Euler equations, the main new challenge of the paper is that when controlling the acoustic geometry and bounding the wave equation energies, we must deal with the difficulty that the vorticity and entropy gradient are four-dimensional space-time vectors satisfying a space-time div-curl-transport system, where the space-time div-curl part is not elliptic. Due to lack of ellipticity, one cannot immediately rely on the approach taken in [M. M. Disconzi and J. Speck, The relativistic Euler equations: Remarkable null structures and regularity properties, Ann. Henri Poincaré 20(7) (2019) 2173–2270] to control these terms. To overcome this difficulty, we show that the space-time div-curl systems imply elliptic div-curl-transport systems on constant-time hypersurfaces plus error terms that involve favorable differentiations and contractions with respect to the four-velocity. By using these structures, we are able to adequately control the vorticity and entropy gradient with the help of energy estimates for transport equations, elliptic estimates, Schauder estimates and Littlewood–Paley theory.

Abstract:String theory still remains one of the promising candidates for a unification of the theory of gravity and quantum field theory. One of its essential parts is relativistic description of moving multi-dimensional objects called membranes (or p-branes) in a curved spacetime. On the classical field theory level, they are described by an action functional extremalising the volume of a manifold swept by a propagating membrane. This and related field theories are collectively called membrane sigma models. Differential geometry is an important mathematical tool in the study of string theory. It turns out that string and membrane backgrounds can be conveniently described using objects defined on a direct sum of tangent and cotangent bundles of the spacetime manifold. Mathematical field studying such object is called generalized geometry. Its integral part is the theory of Leibniz algebroids, vector bundles with a Leibniz algebra bracket on its module of smooth sections. Special cases of Leibniz algebroids are better known Lie and Courant algebroids. This thesis is divided into two main parts (the second one is ommited in this preprint). In the first one, we review the foundations of the theory of Leibniz algebroids, generalized geometry, extended generalized geometry, and NambuPoisson structures. The main aim is to provide the reader with a consistent introduction to the mathematics used in the published papers. The text is a combination both of well known results and new ones. We emphasize the notion of a generalized metric and of corresponding orthogonal transformations, which laid the groundwork of our research.

The relativistic Euler equations with a physical vacuum boundary: Hadamard local well-posedness, rough solutions, and continuation criterion

Abstract:In this paper we provide a complete local well-posedness theory for the free boundary relativistic Euler equations with a physical vacuum boundary on a Minkowski background. Specifically, we establish the following results: (i) local well-posedness in the Hadamard sense, i.e., local existence, uniqueness, and continuous dependence on the data; (ii) low regularity solutions: our uniqueness result holds at the level of Lipschitz velocity and density, while our rough solutions, obtained as unique limits of smooth solutions, have regularity only a half derivative above scaling; (iii) stability: our uniqueness in fact follows from a more general result, namely, we show that a certain nonlinear functional that tracks the distance between two solutions (in part by measuring the distance between their respective boundaries) is propagated by the flow; (iv) we establish sharp, essentially scale invariant energy estimates for solutions; (v) a sharp continuation criterion, at the level of scaling, showing that solutions can be continued as long as the the velocity is in $L^1_t Lip$ and a suitable weighted version of the density is at the same regularity level. Our entire approach is in Eulerian coordinates and relies on the functional framework developed in the companion work of the second and third authors corresponding to the non relativistic problem. All our results are valid for a general equation of state $p(\varrho)= \varrho^\gamma$, $\gamma > 1$.

Abstract:We derive the equations of motion for relativistic elastic membranes, that is, two-dimensional elastic bodies whose internal energy depends only on their stretching, starting from a variational principle. We show how to obtain conserved quantities for the membrane's motion in the presence of spacetime symmetries, determine the membrane's longitudinal and transverse speeds of sound in isotropic states, and compute the coefficients of linear elasticity with respect to the relaxed configuration. We then use this formalism to discuss two physically interesting systems: a rigidly rotating elastic disk, widely discussed in the context of Ehrenfest's paradox, and a Dyson sphere, that is, a spherical membrane in equilibrium in Schwarzschild's spacetime, with the isotropic tangential pressure balancing the gravitational attraction. Surprisingly, although spherically symmetric perturbations of this system are linearly stable, the axi-symmetric dipolar mode is already unstable. This may be taken as a cautionary tale against misconstruing radial stability as true stability.
