A nonlinear wave equation is derived and investigated for relativistic membranes moving in the Schwarzschild spacetime, and spherical symmetric solutions for the motion are obtained and studied systematically. Abstract:Whatever the fluid lipid vesicle is modeled as the spontaneous-curvature, bilayer-coupling, or the area-difference elasticity, and no matter whether a pulling axial force applied at the vesicle poles or not, a universal shape equation presents when the shape has both axisymmetry and up-down symmetry. This equation is a second order nonlinear ordinary differential equation about the sine $sin\psi (r)$ of the angle $\psi (r)$ between the tangent of the contour and the radial axis $r$. However, analytically there is not a generally applicable method to solve it, while numerically the angle $\psi (0)$ can not be obtained unless by tricky extrapolation for $r=0$ is a singular point of the equation. We report an infinite series representation of the equation, in which the known solutions are some special cases, and a new family of shapes related to the membrane microtubule formation, in which $sin\psi (0)$ takes values from 0 to $\pi /2$, is given.

Abstract:The dynamics of a membrane is a coupled system of a moving elastic surface and an incompressible membrane fluid. The difficulties in analyzing such a system include the nonlinearity of the curved space (geometric nonlinearity), the nonlinearity of the fluid dynamics (fluid nonlinearity), and the coupling to the surface incompressibility. In the two-dimensional case, the fluid vanishes and the system reduces to a coupling of a wave equation and an elliptic equation. Here we prove the local existence and uniqueness of the solution to the system by constructing a suitable discrete scheme and proving the compactness of the discrete solutions. The risk of blowing up due to the geometric nonlinearity is overcome by the bending elasticity

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the Cauchy problem for the relativistic membrane equation (RME) embedded in $\mathbb R^{1+(1+n)}$ with $n=2,3$. We show that the RME with a class of large (in energy norm) initial data admits a global, smooth solution. The initial data are given by the short pulse type, which is introduced by Christodoulou in his work on the formation of black holes [10]. Due to the quasilinear feature of RME, we construct two multipliers adapted to the geometry of membrane and present an efficient way for proving the global existence of smooth solution to the geometric wave equation with double null structure. We also derive the asymptotic geometry of the future null infinity and find out a nonlinear (expanding) effect at infinity.

Abstract:We study the self-similar solutions of Smoluchowski's equation with kernel K(x, y) = x1−εy1−ε for ε > 0 and ε ≪ 1. We prove that by choosing the similarity exponents as suitable functions of ε, the self-similar solutions present correct behaviours at the origin and at infinity, which amounts to solving a nonlinear eigenvalue problem. This characterizes the self-similar solution found as being of the second kind in the notation introduced by Barenblatt.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a unified formulae for explicit self-similar solutions of the Euler/Navier–Stokes–Korteweg equations arising in the modeling of capillary fluids. The technique used here is to reduce Euler/Navier–Stokes–Korteweg equations into a series of solvable ordinary differential equations by making use of multi-dimensional self-similar ansatz and variable separation method.

Abstract:The paper studies the equilibrium configurations of inextensible elastic membranes exhibiting lateral fluidity. Using a continuum description of the membrane's motions based on the surface Navier--Stokes equations with bending forces, the paper derives differential equations governing the mechanical equilibrium. The equilibrium conditions are found to be independent of lateral viscosity and relate tension, pressure, and tangential velocity of the fluid. These conditions suggest that either the lateral fluid motion ceases or non-decaying stationary flow of mass can only be supported by surfaces with Killing vector fields, such as axisymmetric shapes. A shape equation is derived that extends the classical Helfrich model with an area constraint to membranes of non-negligible mass. Furthermore, the paper suggests a simple numerical method to compute solutions of the shape equation. Numerical experiments conducted reveal a diverse family of equilibrium configurations. The stability of equilibrium states involving lateral flow of mass remains an unresolved question.

Abstract:We derive the equations of motion for relativistic elastic membranes, that is, two-dimensional elastic bodies whose internal energy depends only on their stretching, starting from a variational principle. We show how to obtain conserved quantities for the membrane's motion in the presence of spacetime symmetries, determine the membrane's longitudinal and transverse speeds of sound in isotropic states, and compute the coefficients of linear elasticity with respect to the relaxed configuration. We then use this formalism to discuss two physically interesting systems: a rigidly rotating elastic disk, widely discussed in the context of Ehrenfest's paradox, and a Dyson sphere, that is, a spherical membrane in equilibrium in Schwarzschild's spacetime, with the isotropic tangential pressure balancing the gravitational attraction. Surprisingly, although spherically symmetric perturbations of this system are linearly stable, the axi-symmetric dipolar mode is already unstable. This may be taken as a cautionary tale against misconstruing radial stability as true stability.

Non-uniqueness in the Leray-Hopf class for a dyadic Navier-Stokes model

Abstract:The uniqueness of Leray-Hopf solutions to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations remains a significant open question in fluid mechanics. This paper proposes a potential mechanism for non-uniqueness, illustrated in a natural dyadic shell model. We show that, for the Obukhov model with $d>2$, there exist initial data at the critical regularity that give rise to two distinct Leray-Hopf solutions. These solutions exhibit an approximately discretely self-similar structure, with non-uniqueness resulting from a partial breaking of the scaling symmetry. The fundamental observation is that, in a certain scenario, the dynamics reduce to a sequence of weakly coupled finite-dimensional systems. Moreover, the predominant nonlinear interactions are identical to those arising in convex integration, suggesting the possibility of a similar construction in the full PDE setting.

Abstract:Introduction: the Navier-Stokes equations are essential in fluid dynamics, describing the motion of fluids like liquids and gases. Solving these equations, especially in complex flows and high-Reynolds-number regimes, is a significant challenge. Numerical simulations provide some insights, but often under restrictive assumptions that limit applicability. Recent geometric and algebraic methods have emerged, focusing on the equations' structure, yet questions about the uniqueness and stability of weak solutions persist. Objective: this paper aims to reformulate the Navier-Stokes equations in covariant form and develop new equations that facilitate the search for potential solutions, emphasizing symmetries. Geometric Approach: a covariant formulation of the Navier-Stokes equations is presented, applying a Fourier transform on a bounded manifold and seeking smoothness and viable solutions through convergence of manifold elements. Transformations: the study examines transformations between manifolds, investigating symmetries and interpretations related to homeomorphisms, isometries, and diffeomorphisms, including inertial frames of reference. Discussion and Conclusions: this study introduces a geometric reformulation of the Navier-Stokes equations, proposing new equations to enhance convergence and smoothness of solutions. It presents a novel class of solutions and transformations, with significant interdisciplinary connections. Further simulations, experimental validation, and ongoing development are essential to broaden the applicability of these equations and their solutions.

Abstract:The energetically most efficient way how a deformed red blood cell regains equilibrium is mathematically described by the gradient flow of the Canham-Helfrich functional, including a spontaneous curvature and the conservation of surface area and enclosed volume. Using a recently discovered multiplicity inequality, we prove global existence and convergence of smooth solutions for spheres and axisymmetric tori, provided the initial energy lies below explicit thresholds.

Abstract:Boussinesq-type wave equations involve nonlinearities and dispersion. In this paper a Boussinesq-type equation with amplitude-dependent nonlinearities is presented. Such a model was proposed by Heimburg and Jackson (2005) for describing longitudinal waves in biomembranes and later improved by Engelbrecht et al. (2015) taking into account the microinertia of a biomembrane. The steady solution in the form of a solitary wave is derived and the influence of nonlinear and dispersive terms over a large range of possible sets of coefficients demonstrated. The solutions emerging from arbitrary initial inputs are found using the numerical simulation. The properties of emerging trains of solitary waves waves are analysed. Finally, the interaction of solitary waves which satisfy the governing equation is studied. The interaction process is not fully elastic and after several interactions radiation effects may be significant. This means that for the present case the solitary waves are not solitons in the strict mathematical sense. However, like in other cases known in solid mechanics, such solutions may be conditionally called solitons.
Analytical solutions and asymptotic behaviors to the vacuum free boundary problem for 2D Navier-Stokes equations with degenerate viscosity

Abstract:In this paper, we constructed a new class of analytical solutions to the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with vacuum free boundary in polar coordinates. These rotational solutions captured the physical vacuum phenomenon that the sound speed was $ C^{1/2} $-Hölder continuous across the boundary, and they provided some new information on our understanding of ocean vortices and reference examples for simulations of computing flows. It was shown that both radial and angular velocity components and their derivatives will tend to zero as $ t\rightarrow +\infty $ and the free boundary will grow linearly in time, which happens to be consistent with the linear growth properties of inviscid fluids. The large time behavior of the free boundary $ r = a(t) $ was completely determined by a second order nonlinear ordinary differential equation (ODE) with parameters of rotational strength $ \xi $, adiabatic exponent $ \gamma $, and viscosity coefficients. We tracked the profile and large time behavior of $ a(t) $ by exploring the intrinsic structure of the ODE and the contradiction argument, instead of introducing some physical quantities, such as the total mass, the momentum weight and the total energy, etc., which are usually used in the previous literature. In particular, these results can be applied to the 2D Navier-Stokes equations with constant viscosity and the Euler equations.

Abstract:The observed behaviour of passive objects in simple flows can be surprisingly intricate, and is complicated further by object activity. Inspired by the motility of bacterial swimmers, in this two-part study we examine the three-dimensional motion of rigid active particles in shear Stokes flow, focusing on bodies that induce rapid rotation as part of their activity. Here, in Part 1, we develop a multiscale framework to investigate these emergent dynamics and apply it to simple spheroidal objects. In Part 2 (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2301.11032" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2301.11032">arXiv:2301.11032</a>), we apply our framework to understand the emergent dynamics of more complex shapes; helicoidal objects with chirality. Via a multiple-scales asymptotic analysis for nonlinear systems, we systematically derive emergent equations of motion for long-term trajectories that explicitly account for the strong (leading-order) effects of fast spinning. Supported by numerical examples, we constructively link these effective dynamics to the well-known Jeffery's orbits for passive spheroids, deriving an explicit closed-form expression for the effective shape of the active particle, broadening the scope of Jeffery's seminal study to spinning spheroids.

Topological Methods in Nonlinear Analysis

Abstract:Stationary or self similar solutions with suitable homogeneity often play a crucial role in the regularity theory of nonlinear problems, which are physically or geometrically interesting. This has been manifested in the regularity theory of harmonic maps and minimal surfaces. The local partial regularity theorem in [CKN] implies that there are no self-similar solutions with small local energy (also see [TX] for generalizations). Making use of some arguments in [NRS], Tsai has ruled out the existence of any self-similar solutions with a finite local energy. Yet it is unclear whether or not solutions of the incompressible Navier– Stokes equation in three space dimensions would develop singularities in finite time. Therefore, it may be still interesting to construct special solutions of the 3-dimensional Navier–Stokes equation. In this note, we construct a one-parameter family of explicit smooth solutions of the 3-dimensional impressible Navier–Stokes equation on R\p, where p is any given point. These solutions are axisymmetric, homogeneous of degree −1. They are steady solutions to the Navier–Stokes equations and also solve the self-similar

Abstract:Membranes are of great technological and biological as well as theoretical interest. Two main classes of membranes can be distinguished: Fluid membranes and polymerized, tethered membranes. Here, we review progress in the theoretical understanding of polymerized membranes, i.e. membranes with a fixed internal connectivity. We start by collecting basic physical properties, clarifying the role of bending rigidity and disorder, theoretically and experimentally as well as numerically. We then give a thorough introduction into the theory of self-avoiding membranes, or more generally non-local field theories with delta-like interactions. Based on a proof of perturbative renormalizability for non-local field-theories, renormalization group calculations can be performed up to 2-loop order, which in 3 dimensions predict a crumpled phase with fractal dimension of about 2.4. The tricritical behavior of membranes is discussed and shown to be quite different from that of polymers. Dynamical properties are studied in the same frame-work. Along the same lines, disorder can be included leading to interesting applications. We also construct a generalization of the O(N)-model, which in the limit N->0 reduces to self-avoiding membranes in analogy with the O(N)-model, which in the limit N->0 reduces to self-avoiding polymers. We also describe the instanton-contribution governing the large-order behavior of perturbation theory. Some technical details are relegated to the appendices.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the existence of self-similar algebraic spiral solutions for 2-D incompressible Euler equations for the initial vorticity of the form $|y|^{-\frac1\mu}\ \mathring{\omega}(\theta)$ with $\mu>\frac12$ and $\mathring{\omega}\in L^1(\mathbb T)$ satisfying $m$-fold symmetry ($m\geq 2$) and a dominant condition. As an important application, we prove the existence of weak solution when $\mathring{\omega}$ is a Radon measure on $\mathbb T$ with $m$-fold symmetry, which is related to the vortex sheet solution.
