Abstract:We treat two quite different problems related to changes of complex structures on Kähler manifolds by using global geometric method. First, by using operators from Hodge theory on compact Kähler manifold, we present a closed explicit extension formula for holomorphic canonical forms in different complex structures. As applications, we give a closed explicit formula for certain canonical sections of Hodge bundles on marked and polarized moduli spaces of projective manifolds, and provide a closed explicit extension formula for holomorphic pluricanonical forms under certain natural conditions. Second, by using the operators in L^2-Hodge theory on Poincaré disk, we present a simple and unified method to solve the Beltrami equations with measurable coefficients for quasi-conformal maps.

Abstract:In this article, the auto-Bäcklund transformation of the sine-Gordon equation is formulated as a gauge transformation acting on the Lax connection and preserving its form. This gauge transformation contains the known Darboux transformation as a special case. Therefore the auto-Bäcklund transformation is a dressinglike symmetry but of a different kind in general than the dressing transformation. Only in the case of the transformation between the vacuum and one-soliton solution are these two kinds of transformations equivalent.

Spherical Evolution of the Generalized Harmonic Gauge Formulation of General Relativity on Compactified Hyperboloidal Slices

Abstract:We report on the successful numerical evolution of the compactified hyperboloidal initial value problem in general relativity using generalized harmonic gauge. We work in spherical symmetry, using a massless scalar field to drive dynamics. Our treatment is based on the dual-foliation approach, proceeding either by using a height function or by solving the eikonal equation to map between frames. Both are tested here with a naive implementation and with hyperboloidal layers. We present a broad suite of numerical evolutions, including pure gauge perturbations, constraint violating and satisfying data with and without scalar field matter. We present calculations of spacetimes with a regular center. For black hole spacetimes we use excision to remove part of the black hole interior. We demonstrate both pointwise and norm convergence at the expected rate of our discretization. We present evolutions in which the scalar field collapses to form a black hole. Evolving nonlinear scalar field perturbations of the Schwarzschild spacetime, we recover the expected quasinormal frequencies and tail decay rates from linear theory.

Abstract:Calabi-Yau compactifications have typically a large number of complex structure and/or Kähler moduli that have to be stabilised in phenomenologically-relevant vacua. The former can in principle be done by fluxes in type IIB solutions. However, the tadpole conjecture proposes that the number of stabilised moduli can at most grow linearly with the tadpole charge of the fluxes required for stabilisation. We scrutinise this conjecture in the 2 6 Gepner model: a non-geometric background mirror dual to a rigid Calabi-Yau manifold, in the deep interior of moduli space. By constructing an extensive set of supersymmetric Minkowski flux solutions, we spectacularly confirm the linear growth, while achieving a slightly higher ratio of stabilised moduli to flux charge than the conjectured upper bound. As a byproduct, we obtain for the first time a set of solutions within the tadpole bound where all complex structure moduli are massive. Since the 2 6 model has no Kähler moduli, these show that the massless Minkowski conjecture does not hold beyond supergravity.

Abstract:The form and evolution of multi-phase biomembranes is of fundamental importance in order to understand living systems. In order to describe these membranes, we consider a mathematical model based on a Canham--Helfrich--Evans two-phase elastic energy, which will lead to fourth order geometric evolution problems involving highly nonlinear boundary conditions. We develop a parametric finite element method in an axisymmetric setting. Using a variational approach, it is possible to derive weak formulations for the highly nonlinear boundary value problems such that energy decay laws, as well as conservation properties, hold for spatially discretised problems. We will prove these properties and show that the fully discretised schemes are well-posed. Finally, several numerical computations demonstrate that the numerical method can be used to compute complex, experimentally observed two-phase biomembranes.

Abstract:Hypertranslations and hyperrotations are asymptotic symmetries of flat space, on top of the familiar supertranslations and superrotations. They were discovered in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2205.01422" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2205.01422">arXiv:2205.01422</a> by working in the Special Double Null (SDN) gauge, where $\mathscr{I}^{+}$ and $\mathscr{I}^{-}$ are approached along $null$ directions. It was observed there that while the hair degrees of freedom associated to these diffeomorphisms show up in the covariant surfaces charges, the diffeomorphisms themselves do not. This made their status intermediate in some ways between global symmetries and trivial gauge transformations, making interpretation ambiguous. In this paper, we revisit the fall-offs considered in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2205.01422" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2205.01422">arXiv:2205.01422</a> which were strictly subleading to Minkowski in conventional double null coordinates. We identify a new class of fall-offs where this assumption is relaxed, but whose charges nonetheless remain finite. Remarkably, the leading behavior is still Riemann flat, indicating that these are soft modes. With this more refined definition of asymptotic flatness, we show that leading hypertranslations and leading hyperrotations explicitly show up in the charges. This makes them genuine global symmetries of asymptotically flat Einstein gravity in the SDN gauge. We write down the new algebra of asymptotic Killing vectors that subsumes the BMS algebra.

Abstract:Mathematics and Mechanics of Solids, Ahead of Print. We consider the bifurcation and post-bifurcation of an extended and inflated circular cylindrical membrane under limited extensibility of its constituents. First, for illustration of the limited extensibility effect, a membrane made of the (isotropic) Gent model is briefly analyzed. Second, the membrane is considered to be made of an isotropic ground substance reinforced with fibers symmetrically arranged in two helically distributed families which are mechanically equivalent. The mechanical behavior of the fibers in a similar way to the (isotropic) Gent model is taken to reflect fiber limited extensibility. In particular, the materials under consideration are NH models augmented with two functions called reinforcing models, each one accounting for unidirectional reinforcement. For a specific material, since both families are mechanically equivalent, the reinforcing models are equal. The nature of the anisotropy considered, i.e., the reinforcing model, can depend only on the stretch in the fiber direction or can depend on the fiber stretch and also can have an influence on the shear response of the material (i.e., it also captures shearing in the fiber direction). The limitation associated with the material anisotropic deformability as well as the arrangement of the material constituents is discussed with respect to the initiation of bulging and necking for the membrane. The subsequent consequences for configurations in equilibrium during post-bifurcation are also studied in detail and a variety of results are given in terms of the limited extensibility (deformability) of the fibers as well as their mechanical response and arrangement (fiber winding angle).

Abstract:We consider strictly convex hypersurfaces which are evolving by the non-parametric logarithmic Gauss curvature flow subject to a Neumann boundary condition. Solutions are shown to converge smoothly to hypersurfaces moving by translation. In particular, for bounded domains we prove that convex functions with prescribed normal derivative satisfy a uniform oscillation estimate.

Abstract:We consider the moduli space of vector bundles of rank $n$ and degree $ng$ over a fixed Riemann surface of genus $g\geq 2$. We use the explicit parametrization in terms of the Tyurin data. In the moduli space there is a "non-abelian" Theta divisor, consisting of bundles with $h^1\geq 1$. On the complement of this divisor we construct a non-abelian Cauchy kernel explicitly in terms of the Tyurin data. With the additional datum of a non-special divisor, we can construct a reference flat holomorphic connection which is also dependent holomorphically on the moduli of the bundle. This allows us to identify the bundle of Higgs fields, i.e. the cotangent bundle of the moduli space, with the affine bundle of holomorphic connections and provide a monodromy map into the ${\rm GL}_n$ character variety. We show that the Goldman symplectic structure on the character variety pulls back along this map to the complex canonical symplectic structure on the cotangent bundle and hence also on the space of affine connections. The pull-back of the Liouville one-form to the affine bundle of connections is then shown to be a logarithmic form with poles along the non-abelian theta divisor and residue given by $h^1$.

Abstract:The energetically most efficient way how a deformed red blood cell regains equilibrium is mathematically described by the gradient flow of the Canham-Helfrich functional, including a spontaneous curvature and the conservation of surface area and enclosed volume. Using a recently discovered multiplicity inequality, we prove global existence and convergence of smooth solutions for spheres and axisymmetric tori, provided the initial energy lies below explicit thresholds.

Abstract:The method of symmetry reduction is systematically applied to derive several classes of invariant solutions for the generalized Weierstrass system inducing constant mean curvature surfaces and to the associated two-dimensional nonlinear sigma model. A classification of subgroups with generic orbits of codimension one of the Lie point symmetry group for these systems provides a tool for introducing symmetry variables and reduces the initial systems to different nonequivalent systems of ordinary differential equations. We perform a singularity analysis for them in order to establish whether these ordinary differential equations have the Painlevé property. These ordinary differential equations can then be transformed to standard forms and next solved in terms of elementary and Jacobi elliptic functions. This results in a large number of new solutions and in some cases new interesting constant mean curvature surfaces are found. Furthermore, this symmetry analysis is extended to include conditional symmetries by subjecting the original system to certain differential constraints. In this case, several new types of nonsplitting algebraic, trigonometric, and hyperbolic multisoliton solutions have been obtained in explicit form. Some physical interpretation of these results in the areas of fluid membranes, string theory, two-dimensionl gravity, and cosmology are given.

Mapping Cone Connections and their Yang-Mills Functional

Abstract:For a given closed two-form, we introduce the cone Yang-Mills functional which is a Yang-Mills-type functional for a pair $(A,B)$, a connection one-form $A$ and a scalar $B$ taking value in the adjoint representation of a Lie group. The functional arises naturally from dimensionally reducing the Yang-Mills functional over the fiber of a circle bundle with the two-form being the Euler class. We write down the Euler-Lagrange equations of the functional and present some of the properties of its critical solutions, especially in comparison with Yang-Mills solutions. We show that a special class of three-dimensional solutions satisfy a duality condition which generalizes the Bogomolny monopole equations. Moreover, we analyze the zero solutions of the cone Yang-Mills functional and give an algebraic classification characterizing principal bundles that carry such cone-flat solutions when the two-form is non-degenerate.

Abstract:A gauge theory of solids with conformal symmetry is formulated to model various electromechanical and magnetomechanical coupling phenomena. If the pulled back metric of the current configuration (the right Cauchy-Green tensor) is scaled with a constant, the volumetric part of the Lagrange density changes while the isochoric part remains invariant. However, upon a position dependent scaling, the isochoric part also loses invariance. In order to restore the invariance of the isochoric part, a 1-form compensating field is introduced and the notion of a gauge covariant derivative is utilized to minimally replace the Lagrangian. In view of obvious similarities with the Weyl geometry, the Weyl condition is imposed through the Lagrangian and a minimal coupling is employed so the 1-form could evolve. On deriving the Euler-Lagrange equations based on Hamilton's principle, we observe a close similarity with the governing equations for flexoelectricity under isochoric deformation if the exact part of 1-form is interpreted as the electric field and the anti-exact part as the polarization vector. Next, we model piezoelectricity and electrostriction phenomena by contracting the Weyl condition in various ways. Applying the Hodge decomposition theorem on the 1-form which leads to the curl of a pseudo-vector field and a vector field, we also model magnetomechanical phenomena. Identifying the pseudo-vector field with magnetic potential and the vector part with magnetization, flexomagnetism, piezomagnetism and magnetostriction phenomena under isochoric deformation are also modeled. Finally, we consider an analytical solution of the equations for piezoelectricity and propose a flexoelectric plate model to illustrate on the insightful information that the present approach potentially provides.

Abstract:This article generalizes the theory of shifted symplectic structures to the relative context and non-geometric stacks. We describe basic constructions that naturally appear in this theory: shifted cotangent bundles and the AKSZ procedure. Along the way, we also develop the theory of shifted symplectic groupoids presenting shifted symplectic structures on quotients and define a deformation to the normal cone for shifted Lagrangian morphisms.

Abstract:Let $X$ denote the `conifold smoothing', the symplectic Weinstein manifold which is the complement of a smooth conic in $T^*S^3$, or equivalently the plumbing of two copies of $T^*S^3$ along a Hopf link. Let $Y$ denote the `conifold resolution', by which we mean the complement of a smooth divisor in $\mathcal{O}(-1) \oplus \mathcal{O}(-1) \to \mathbb{P}^1$. We prove that the compactly supported symplectic mapping class group of $X$ splits off a copy of an infinite rank free group, in particular is infinitely generated; and we classify spherical objects in the bounded derived category $D(Y)$ (the three-dimensional `affine $A_1$-case'). Our results build on work of Chan-Pomerleano-Ueda and Toda, and both theorems make essential use of working on the `other side' of the mirror.

Abstract:In this paper we discuss gauging noninvertible zero-form symmetries in two dimensions. We specialize to certain gaugeable cases, specifically, fusion categories of the form for a suitable Hopf algebra (which includes the special case Rep( G ) for G a finite group). We also specialize to the case that the fusion category is multiplicity-free. We discuss how to construct a modular-invariant partition function from a choice of Frobenius algebra structure on . We discuss how ordinary G orbifolds for finite groups G are a special case of the construction, corresponding to the fusion category Vec( G ) = Rep(C[ G ] * ). For the cases Rep( S 3 ), Rep( D 4 ), and Rep( Q 8 ), we construct the crossing kernels for general intertwiner maps. We explicitly compute partition functions in the examples of Rep( S 3 ), Rep( D 4 ), Rep( Q 8 ), and , and discuss applications in c = 1 CFTs. We also discuss decomposition in the special case that the entire noninvertible symmetry group acts trivially.

Relative Equilibria for Scaling Symmetries and Central Configurations

Abstract:In this paper, we explore scaling symmetries within the framework of symplectic geometry. We focus on the action $\Phi$ of the multiplicative group $G = \mathbb{R}^+$ on exact symplectic manifolds $(M, \omega,\theta)$, with $\omega = -d\theta$, where $ \theta $ is a given primitive one-form. Extending established results in symplectic geometry and Hamiltonian dynamics, we introduce conformally symplectic maps, conformally Hamiltonian systems, conformally symplectic group actions, and the notion of conformal invariance. This framework allows us to generalize the momentum map to the conformal momentum map, which is crucial for understanding scaling symmetries. Additionally, we provide a generalized Hamiltonian Noether's theorem for these symmetries. We introduce the (conformal) augmented Hamiltonian $H_{\xi}$ and prove that the relative equilibria of scaling symmetries are solutions to equations involving $ H _{ \xi } $ and the primitive one-form $\theta$. We derive their main properties, emphasizing the differences from relative equilibria in traditional symplectic actions. For cotangent bundles, we define a scaled cotangent lifted action and derive explicit formulas for the conformal momentum map. We also provide a general definition of central configurations for Hamiltonian systems on cotangent bundles that admit scaling symmetries. Applying these results to simple mechanical systems, we introduce the augmented potential $U_{\xi}$ and show that the relative equilibria of scaling symmetries are solutions to an equation involving $ U _{ \xi } $ and the Lagrangian one-form $\theta_L$. Finally, we apply our general theory to the Newtonian $n$-body problem, recovering the classical equations for central configurations.

Abstract:The Gauss-Bonnet Formula is a significant achievement in 19th century differential geometry for the case of surfaces and the 20th century cumulative work of H. Hopf, W. Fenchel, C. B. Allendoerfer, A. Weil and S.S. Chern for higher-dimensional Riemannian manifolds. It relates the Euler characteristic of a Riemannian manifold to a curvature integral over the manifold plus a somewhat enigmatic boundary term. In this paper, we revisit the formula using the formalism of double forms, a tool introduced by de Rham, and further developed by Kulkarni, Thorpe, and Gray. We explore the geometric nature of the boundary term and provide some examples and applications.
