Abstract:The main leitmotiv of the present talk is analysis of different topological objects such as strings and domain walls in QCD. As it is well known, the standard model in general (and QCD in particular) does not support any kind of such objects due to some simple topological arguments. However, the situation cardinally changes when one considers QCD in large $N_c$ limit or in the limit of large baryon density when the unique light $\eta'$ field emerges. I discuss $\eta'$- domain walls and $\eta'$ global strings which occur in both systems: in high density QCD and in QCD at large $N_c $. I also discuss the effects of quantum anomalies in the presence of topological objects in high-density QCD. The anomaly induced interactions lead to a number of interesting phenomena (such as the induced currents along the strings) which may have phenomenological consequences observable in neutron stars.

Abstract:Both theoretical arguments and Monte Carlo observations indicate that the topological structure of the QCD vacuum consists of a laminated array of extended, coherent codimension-one membranes of alternating sign. Large-$N_c$ arguments, supported by gauge/string holography, indicate that these membranes are domain walls which separate discrete "flux vacua" with values of the topological $\theta$ parameter which differ by $\pm 2\pi$. This exposes a close analogy with 2D U(1) gauge theory, where $\theta$ can be interpreted as electric polarization, and the domain walls are pointlike charged particles. In 4D QCD, the $\theta$ parameter represents background Ramond-Ramond flux, which can be interpreted as a polarization of the charged membranes in the vacuum. In this framework, the chiral condensate is formed from the quark surface modes on the membranes. Massless Goldstone boson propagation takes place due to a coordination between bulk oscillations of the polarization field $\theta$ and the surface currents represented by the Chern-Simons 3-form on the brane surface. This coordination is enforced by overall gauge invariance which imposes an anomaly inflow constraint between bulk and surface currents.
Probing the high temperature symmetry breaking with gravitational waves from domain walls

Abstract:The symmetry can be broken at high temperature and then restored at low temperature, which is the so-called \emph{high temperature symmetry breaking}. It often appears in some theories such as the high scale electroweak baryogenesis mechanism. In this paper, we probe the high temperature $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry breaking with gravitational waves (GWs) from domain wall annihilation. We first introduce a scalar with $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry and few of singlet fermions that interact with scalar through a five-dimension operator. This can lead to the scalar potential has a non-zero minimum at high temperature. At the early stage, the scalar is pinned at symmetric phase due to the large Hubble fraction. When the scalar thermal mass becomes comparable to the Hubble parameter, it can quickly roll down to the minimum of potential. Then the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry is spontaneously broken and the domain walls will form. With the decrease of temperature, $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry will be restored. We find that if domain walls are formed at $\mathcal{O}(10^{9})~ \rm GeV$, the GW produced by domain wall annihilation is expected to be observed by BBO, CE and ET. In addition, we also discuss the relationships between this scenario and NANOGrav signal.

Abstract:A bstract Formation and evolution of topological defects in course of non-equilibrium symmetry breaking phase transitions is of wide interest in many areas of physics, from cosmology through condensed matter to low temperature physics. Its study in strongly coupled systems, in absence of quasiparticles, is especially challenging. We investigate breaking of U(1) symmetry and the resulting spontaneous formation of vortices in a (2 + 1)-dimensional holographic superconductor employing gauge/gravity duality, a ‘first-principles’ approach to study strongly coupled systems. Magnetic fluxons with quantized fluxes are seen emerging in the post-transition superconducting phase. As expected in type II superconductors, they are trapped in the cores of the order parameter vortices. The dependence of the density of these topological defects on the quench time, the dispersion of the typical winding numbers, and the vortex-vortex correlations are consistent with predictions of the Kibble-Zurek mechanism.

Abstract:In this work, we delve into the often overlooked cosmological implications of the spontaneous breaking of the non-Abelian discrete groups, specifically focusing on the formation of domain walls in the case of S4 flavor symmetry. In particular, we investigate three interesting breaking patterns of the S4 group and study the structure of the domain walls in the broken phase for three possible residual symmetries. The presentation of domain walls in the case of multiple vacua is usually complicated, which therefore implies that most of the analyses only approximate their presentation. Here, we propose a subtle way to represent the S4 domain wall networks by presenting the vacua in each breaking pattern as vectors with their components corresponding to their coordinates in the flavon space. Then, through the properties of the obtained vectors, we find that the domain wall networks can be represented by Platonic or Archimedean solids where the vertices represent the degenerate vacua while the edges correspond to the domain walls that separate them. As an illustration, we propose a type-II seesaw model that is based on the S4 flavor symmetry, and study its phenomenological implications on the neutrino sector. Tenacious Domain Walls in Supersymmetric QCD

Abstract:We study the structure of the tenacious (existing for all values of masses of the matter fields) BPS domain walls interpolating between different chirally asymmetric vacua in supersymmetric QCD in the limit of large masses. We show that the wall consists in this case of three layers: two outer layers form a ``coat'' with the characteristic size determined by \Lambda_{SYM} and there is also the core with width of order of inverse mass. The core always carries a significant fraction of the total wall energy. This fraction depends on $N_f$ and on the ``windings'' of the matter fields.

Non-Abelian Domain Walls and Gravitational Waves

Abstract:We investigate the properties of domain walls arising from non-Abelian discrete symmetries, which we refer to as non-Abelian domain walls. We focus on $S_4$, one of the most commonly used groups in lepton flavour mixing models. The spontaneous breaking of $S_4$ leads to distinct vacua preserving a residual $Z_2$ or $Z_3$ symmetry. Five types of domain walls are found, labelled as SI, SII, TI, TII, and TIII, respectively, the former two separating $Z_2$ vacua and the latter three separating $Z_3$ vacua. We highlight that SI, TI and TIII may be unstable for some regions of the parameter space and decay to stable domain walls. Stable domain walls can collapse and release gravitational radiation for a suitable size of explicit symmetry breaking. A symmetry-breaking scale of order 100 TeV may explain the recent discovery of nanohertz gravitational waves by PTA experiments. For the first time, we investigate the properties of these domain walls, which we obtain numerically with semi-analytical formulas applied to compute the tension and thickness across a wide range of parameter space. We estimate the resulting gravitational wave spectrum and find that, thanks to their rich vacuum structure, non-Abelian domain walls manifest in a very interesting and complex phenomenology.

Abstract:We study multiplicities and junctions of BPS domain walls interpolating between different chiral vacua in $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric QCD (SQCD) with the SU$(N)$ gauge group and a varying number of fundamental quarks. Depending on the number of flavors $F$ two distinct classes of {\em degenerate} domain walls emerge: (i) locally distinguishable, i.e. those which differ from each other locally, in local experiments; and (ii) those which have identical local structure and are differentiated only topologically, through judicially chosen compactifications. In the first class two-wall junctions exit while in the second class such junctions do not exist. Acharya and Vafa counted {\em topologically distinguishable} walls in pure super-Yang-Mills. Ritz, Shifman and Vainshtein counted the {\em locally distinguishable} walls in $F=N$ SQCD. In both cases the multiplicity of $k$ walls was the same, $\nu_{N,k}^\text{walls}= N!/\big[(N-k)!k!\big]$. We study the general case $0\leqslant F\leqslant N$, with mixed sets of walls from both classes (i) and (ii) simultaneously, and demonstrate that the above overall multiplicity remains intact. We argue that the growth of the quark masses exhibits no phase transition at any finite masses. The locally distinguishable walls can turn into topologically distinguishable only at $m=\infty$. An evolution of the low-energy wall world sheet theory in passage from small to large $m$ is briefly discussed. We also propose a candidate for the low-energy description of wall junctions. The tools used are localization of instantons, supersymmetry enhancement on the walls, and circle compactification.

Abstract:For a discrete symmetry that is anomalous under QCD, the domain walls produced in the early universe from its spontaneous breaking can naturally annihilate due to QCD instanton effects. The gravitational waves generated from wall annihilation have their amplitude and frequency determined by both the discrete symmetry breaking scale and the QCD scale. The evidence of stochastic gravitational waves at nanohertz observed by pulsar timing array experiments suggests that the discrete-symmetry-breaking scale is around 100 TeV, assuming the domain-wall explanation. The annihilation temperature is about 100 MeV, which could naturally be below the QCD phase transition temperature. We point out that the QCD phase transition within some domains with an effective large QCD θ angle could be a first-order one. To derive the phase diagram in θ and temperature, we adopt a phenomenological linear sigma model with three quark flavors. The domain-wall explanation for the NANOGrav, EPTA, PPTA and CPTA results hints at a first-order QCD phase transition, which predicts additional gravitational waves at higher frequencies. If the initial formation of domain walls is also a first-order process, this class of domain-wall models predicts an interesting gravitational wave spectroscopy with frequencies spanning more than ten orders of magnitude, from nanohertz to 100 Hz.

Kibble-Zurek Mechanism and Beyond: Lessons from a Holographic Superfluid Disk

Abstract:The superfluid phase transition dynamics and associated spontaneous vortex formation with the crossing of the critical temperature in a disk geometry is studied in the framework of the $AdS/CFT$ correspondence by solving the Einstein-Abelian-Higgs model in an $AdS_4$ black hole. For a slow quench, the vortex density admits a universal scaling law with the cooling rate as predicted by the Kibble-Zurek mechanism (KZM), while for fast quenches, the density shows a universal scaling behavior as a function of the final temperature, that lies beyond the KZM prediction. The vortex number distribution in both the power-law and saturation regimes can be approximated by a normal distribution. However, the study of the universal scaling of the cumulants reveals non-normal features and indicates that vortex statistics in the newborn superfluid is best described by the Poisson binomial distribution, previously predicted in the KZM regime [Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 240602 (2020)]. This is confirmed by studying the cumulant scalings as a function of the quench time and the quench depth. Our work supports the existence of a universal defect number distribution that accommodates the KZM scaling, its breakdown at fast quenches, and the additional universal scaling laws as a function of the final value of the control parameter.

Domain walls in super Yang-Mills: worldvolume TQFTs and deconfinement from semiclassics on $\mathbb{R}^3\times\mathbb{S}^1$

Abstract:This work studies domain walls between chirally-separated vacua in supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory (SYM) on $\mathbb{R}^3\times\mathbb{S}^1$ in the semiclassical limit. For all gauge groups we explicitly find the electric fluxes of all BPS domain walls and fully characterize the representation that they form under the global symmetry of SYM. We compute the characters of these representations formed by the semiclassical domain walls. We also compute these characters for the worldvolume TQFTs appearing in the literature for $SU(N)$ and $Sp(N)$ gauge groups. We find complete agreement between the two computations, providing thus a dynamical test of the proposed worldvolume TQFTs. We also propose a new worldvolume TQFT for $E_6$ domain walls, subjecting it to the same tests. Finally, we study deconfinement of quarks on domain walls for all gauge groups. We show that for all gauge groups confining strings (stable in the abelianized regime) can end on domain walls, regardless of whether or not the group has a center.

Abstract:Using the Polyakov-loop effective action, we investigate the structure of spontaneously broken $\mathbb{Z}_N$ symmetry in the deconfinement vacuum in the SU($N$) Yang-Mills theory with finite $N$. First, we examine the Polyakov-loop fluctuation around a $\mathbb{Z}_N$-broken vacuum and calculate the spatial correlation of its phase variable. We show that the phase variable of the Polyakov loop becomes a Nambu-Goldstone mode in the large-$N$ limit. Second, we estimate the global vacuum-to-vacuum transition rate in a finite-volume domain of the quark-gluon plasma. Based on our estimation, we state that some threshold volume exists, a domain larger than which is stable, and vice versa. Identifying the threshold as the lower bound of a stable center domain volume, we find the typical volume scale of center domains.

Abstract:Theories with compact extra dimensions can exhibit a vacuum instability known as a bubble of nothing. These decay modes can be obstructed if the internal manifold is stabilized by fluxes, or if it carries Wilson lines for background gauge fields, or if the instanton is incompatible with the spin structure. In each of these cases the decay can proceed by adding dynamical charged membranes or gauge fields. We give a general, bottom-up procedure for constructing approximate bubble of nothing solutions in models with internal spheres stabilized by flux and study the influence of the brane tension on the tunneling exponent, finding two branches of solutions that merge at a minimal superextremal value of the tension. In the case of Wilson operators and incompatible fermions, the relevant bubble is shown to be the Euclidean Reissner-Nordstrom black hole, and the ordinary decay exponent is modified by $1/g^2$ effects. We examine the Dirac operator on this background and comment on the relevance for models of supergravity with gauged $R$-symmetry.

Abstract:We study the formation of domain structures due to spontaneous breakdown of center symmetry at high temperatures in quenched QCD. We develop a phenomenological model for the explicit propagation of the Polyakov loop as the relevant order parameter of the deconfinement phase transition. The surface tension in the equation of motion is fit in comparison with lattice QCD data. Results give insight into the dynamical formation of center domains as well as the formation of energy bands along domain walls and let us estimate the required time to form such structures above the critical temperature.

Abstract:We quantise from first principles field theories living on the background of a bubble wall in the planar limit with particular focus on the case of spontaneous breaking of gauge symmetry. Using these tools, we compute the average momentum transfer from transition radiation: the soft emission of radiation by an energetic particle passing across the wall, with a particular focus on the longitudinal polarisation of vectors. We find these to be comparable to transverse polarisations in symmetry-breaking transitions with mild super-cooling, and dominant in broken to broken transitions with thin wall. Our results have phenomenological applications for the expansion of bubbles during first order phase transitions. Our general framework allows for the robust calculation of any particle processes of interest in such translation breaking backgrounds.

Abstract:We study bubble of nothing decays and their reverse processes, the creation of vacua through `bubbles of something', in models of the Universe based on string theory. From the four-dimensional perspective, the corresponding gravitational instantons contain an end-of-the-world (ETW) boundary or brane, realized by the internal manifold shrinking to zero size. The existence of such ETW branes is predicted by the Cobordism Conjecture. We develop the 4d EFT description of such boundaries at three levels: First, by generalizing the Witten bubble through an additional defect. Second, by replacing the compact $S^1$ with a Calabi-Yau orientifold and allowing it to shrink and disappear through a postulated defect. Third, we describe an ETW brane construction for type IIB Calabi-Yau orientifold compactifications with O3/O7 planes through an appropriate additional O5 orientifolding. Our 4d EFT formalism allows us to compute the decay/creation rates for bubbles of anything depending on two parameters: The size of the relevant defect and its tension a.k.a. the induced (generalized) deficit angle.

Abstract:The deconfinement transition in non-Abelian gauge theory is understood as spontaneous breaking of $\mathbb{Z}_N$ symmetry at high temperatures. Accordingly, quark-gluon plasma generally includes some partial cells called center domains, each with a homogeneous Polyakov-loop expectation value. In this work, constructing an effective action describing the deconfinement vacuum of Yang-Mills theory with $N$ colors, we discuss the properties of center domains. First, we evaluate the spatial correlation of local Polyakov-loop fluctuation and demonstrate that some fluctuation becomes a Nambu-Goldstone-like mode in the large-$N$ limit. We also discuss surface tension between two $\mathbb{Z}_N$ center domains. Second, we estimate the global vacuum-to-vacuum transition in a single center domain. We find that some threshold volume exists, where a domain larger than this volume is stable, and vice versa. Identifying the threshold as the lower bound of a stable center domain volume, we quantitatively argue the typical volume scale of center domains.

Simulations of Domain Walls in Two Higgs Doublet Models

Abstract:The Two Higgs Doublet Model predicts the emergence of 3 distinct domain wall solutions arising from the breaking of 3 accidental global symmetries, $Z_2$, CP1 and CP2, at the electroweak scale for specific choices of the model parameters. We present numerical kink solutions to the field equations in all three cases along with dynamical simulations of the models in (2+1) and (3+1) dimensions. For each kink solution we define an associated topological current. In all three cases simulations produce a network of domain walls which deviates from power law scaling in Minkowski and FRW simulations. This deviation is attributed to a winding of the electroweak group parameters around the domain walls in our simulations. We observe a local violation of the neutral vacuum condition on the domain walls in our simulations. This violation is attributed to relative electroweak transformations across the domain walls which is a general feature emerging from random initial conditions.
