Abstract:We prove that nontrivial vacuum states which can arise in hot QCD are associated with the tachyonic regime of hadronic matter fluctuations. This allows us to improve the condition for such states to appear.

Chiral spin symmetry and hot QCD

Abstract:In this talk we overview main results indicating existence in QCD of three qualitatively different regimes connected by smooth crossovers upon heating: a hadron gas, a stringy fluid and a quark-gluon plasma. In the combined large N_c and chiral limit these regimes likely become distinct phases separated by phase transitions: a chiral restoration phase transition around T_{ch} ~ 130 MeV and a deconfinement phase transition around T_d ~ 300 MeV. It should be an important task to verify this issue on the lattice. We will introduce a chiral spin symmetry, which is a symmetry of the electric part of electrodynamics and of QCD with light quarks. It is realized approximately in QCD above the chiral restoration crossover and disappears in the QGP regime. The center symmetry of the pure glue action and the chiral spin symmetry of the electric part of the QCD Lagrangian with light quarks are complementary to distinguish the confining regime and its disappearance. We also address other lattice evidences for stringy fluid: hadron resonances extracted from the lattice correlators; breakdown of the thermal perturbation theory at T < ~ 600 MeV and fluctuations of conserved charges that point out the N_c scaling above T ~ 155 MeV.

Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking from an On-Shell Perspective

Abstract:We show how the well known patterns of masses and interactions that arise from spontaneous symmetry breaking can be determined from an entirely on-shell perspective, that is, without reference to Lagrangians, gauge symmetries, or fields acquiring a vacuum expectation value. To do this, we review how consistent factorization of $2\rightarrow 2$ tree level scattering can lead to the familiar structures of Yang-Mills theories, and extend this to find structures of Yukawa theories. Considering only spins-$0$, $1/2$ and $1$ particles, we construct all the allowed on-shell UV amplitudes under a symmetry group $G$, and consider all the possible IR amplitudes. By demanding that on-shell IR amplitudes match onto on-shell UV amplitudes in the high energy limit, we reproduce the Higgs mechanism and generate masses for spins-$1/2$ and $1$, find that there is a subgroup $H \subseteq G$ in the IR, and other interesting relations. To highlight the results, we show the breaking pattern of the Standard Model $U(1)_{EM} \subset SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y $, along with the generation of the masses and interactions of the particles.

Bogoliubov condensation of gluons and spontaneous gauge symmetry breaking in QCD

Abstract:The problem of the gluonic quasiparticle excitations in QCD is considered under the aspect of the condensation of gluon pairs in the ''squeezed'' vacuum. The present approach is a field theoretical generalization of the Bogoliubov model which successfully reproduced the Landau spectrum in the microscopic theory of superfluidity. We construct a gauge invariant QCD Hamiltonian by formally solving the Gauss equation such that the physical variables are separated by a non-Abelian projection operator, instead of fixing a gauge. By using Dirac quantization we show that the Bogoliubov condensation of gluon pairs destroys this projection operator, and the spontaneous appearance of a gluon mass is accompanied by a longitudinal component for the gluon field in correspondence with the relativistic covariance. Gauge symmetry is broken spontaneously since the gauge invariance of the Hamiltonian is not shared by the vacuum. The squeezed vacuum in the present model is characterized by one free parameter related to the contraction of a pair of zero momentum gluon fields which is fixed from the difference of the $\eta'$ and the $\eta$ - meson masses ($ U(1)$-problem) and results in a value for the gluon condensate which is in good agreement with the value obtained by Shifman, Vainshtein and Zakharov.

Enhancement of quark number susceptibility with an alternative pattern of chiral symmetry breaking in dense matter

Abstract:We explore a possible phase where chiral $SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R$ symmetry is spontaneously broken while its center $Z_2$ symmetry remains unbroken and its consequence on thermal quantities. In this phase, chiral symmetry breaking is driven by a quartic quark condensate although a bilinear quark condensate vanishes. A Ginzburg-Landau free energy leads to a new tricritical point (TCP) between the $Z_2$ broken and unbroken phases. Furthermore, a critical point can appear even in the chiral limit where explicit breaking is turned off, instead of a TCP at which restoration of chiral and its center symmetries takes place simultaneously. The net quark number density exhibits an abrupt change near the restoration of the center symmetry rather than that of the chiral symmetry. Hadron masses in possible phases are also studied in a linear sigma model. We show that, in the $Z_2$ symmetric phase, the $\bar{q}q$-type scalar meson with zero isospin I=0 splits from the $\bar{q}q$-type pseudoscalar meson with I=1.

Chiral symmetry restoration at finite temperature in a model with manifest confinement

Abstract:Multiple lattice evidences support the existence of a confining but chirally symmetric regime of QCD above the chiral symmetry restoration crossover at Tch ~ 155 MeV. This regime is characterised by an approximate chiral spin symmetry of the partition function, which is a symmetry of the colour charge and the confining electric part of the QCD Lagrangian. It is traditionally believed that confinement should automatically induce spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry, which would preclude the existence of a confining but chirally symmetric regime of QCD at high temperatures. We employ a well-known solvable quark model for QCD in 3+1 dimensions that is chirally symmetric and manifestly confining and argue that while confinement indeed induces dynamical breaking of chiral symmetry at T=0, a chiral restoration phase transition takes place at some critical temperature Tch. Above this temperature, the spectrum of the model consists of chirally symmetric hadrons with approximate chiral spin symmetry.

Explore the Origin of Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking from Adaptive Perturbation Method

Abstract:Spontaneous symmetry breaking occurs when the underlying laws of a physical system are symmetric, but the vacuum state chosen by the system is not. The (3+1)d $\phi^4$ theory is relatively simple compared to other more complex theories, making it a good starting point for investigating the origin of non-trivial vacua. The adaptive perturbation method is a technique used to handle strongly coupled systems. The study of strongly correlated systems is useful in testing holography. It has been successful in strongly coupled QM and is being generalized to scalar field theory to analyze the system in the strong-coupling regime. The unperturbed Hamiltonian does not commute with the usual number operator. However, the quantized scalar field admits a plane-wave expansion when acting on the vacuum. While quantizing the scalar field theory, the field can be expanded into plane-wave modes, making the calculations more tractable. However, the Lorentz symmetry, which describes how physical laws remain the same under certain spacetime transformations, might not be manifest in this approach. The proposed elegant resummation of Feynman diagrams aims to restore the Lorentz symmetry in the calculations. The results obtained using this method are compared with numerical solutions for specific values of the coupling constant $\lambda = 1, 2, 4, 8, 16$. Finally, we find evidence for quantum triviality, where self-consistency of the theory in the UV requires $\lambda = 0$. This result implies that the $\phi^4$ theory alone does not experience SSB, and the $\langle \phi\rangle = 0$ phase is protected under the RG-flow by a boundary of Gaussian fixed-points.

A dynamical holographic QCD model for spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking and confinement

Abstract:In this paper, we present a holographic realization of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking and confinement. The latter is realized by building a solution of 5d Einstein-dilaton gravity leading to a confining quark antiquark potential. The 4d currents and the quark mass operator associated with chiral symmetry breaking and creation of meson states are mapped to 5d fields whose dynamics is given by a non-Abelian Higgs action. We introduce a non-minimal dilaton coupling to the tachyon potential which has two parameters, one of them controlling the presence or absence of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking and the other controlling the sign of the chiral condensate as the quark mass grows. We calculate the masses of vector, scalar, axial-vector and pseudoscalar mesons, focusing on the effect of chiral symmetry breaking on the spectrum. In the chiral limit we identify the emergence of a massless state in the pseudoscalar meson spectrum, i.e., the pion. We calculate all meson decay constants and confirm that the pion satisfies the Gell-Mann-Oakes relation in the light quark regime.

Confined but chirally and chiral spin symmetric hot matter

Abstract:We investigate properties of the quark--antiquark mesons at zero and finite temperature in the framework of a solvable chirally symmetric quark model with linear confining potential. The interquark interaction in the model is reminiscent of that derived in Coulomb gauge QCD, with the string tension being the only model parameter. We demonstrate that while the confining interaction induces spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry at T=0, chiral symmetry gets restored at a temperature Tch ~ 90 MeV for the string tension fixed to provide the phenomenological value of the quark condensate. This temperature is similar to Tch ~ 130 MeV observed on the lattice in the chiral limit for N_c=3. The physical mechanism responsible for the chiral symmetry restoration in the confining regime is Pauli blocking of the quark levels, required for the existence of a nonvanishing quark condensate, by the thermal excitations of the quarks and antiquarks. Thus, above the chiral restoration temperature, the meson-like states are chirally symmetric and approximately chiral spin symmetric. A crucial property of the confined meson-like light-light states above Tch is their size that exceeds drastically that in the chirally broken phase below Tch, in contrast to the heavy-heavy mesons that nearly preserve their size irrespective of the temperature. This property is a result of Pauli blocking of the quark and antiquark levels with small momenta. Furthermore, the root-mean-square radius of the states with J=0,1 diverges in the chiral limit. This unexpected property must be a key to understanding unusual features of the hot QCD matter as observed at RHIC and LHC. Consequently, the confining but chirally symmetric matter above Tch can be considered as a dense system of very large and strongly overlapping meson-like states (``strings'').

Abstract:One of the most challenging issues in QCD is the investigation of spontaneous chiral-symmetry breaking, which is characterized by the non-vanishing chiral condensate when the bare fermion mass is zero. In standard methods of the lattice gauge theory, one has to perform expensive simulations at multiple bare quark masses, and employ some modeled functions to extrapolate the data to the chiral limit. This paper applies the probability distribution function method to computing the chiral condensate in lattice QCD with massless dynamical quarks, without any ambiguous mass extrapolation. The results for staggered quarks indicate that this might be a promising and efficient method for investigating the spontaneous chiral-symmetry breaking in lattice QCD, which deserves further investigation.
Space-time approach to spontaneous symmetry breaking in the Abelian-gauge interaction

Abstract:Spontaneous symmetry breaking is examined by regarding it as a phenomenon in the eternal intermediate state due to sequential perturbations. The concept of the relativistic many-body state is applied to this intermediate state occurring in the collision of massless Dirac fermions. Time in the relativistic many-body state should evolve while maintaining the direction of time in each particle, even if the particles are viewed from any inertial frames. This kinematical requirement leads to spontaneous symmetry breaking in the vacuum of these states, which gives a different meaning to the results of the Higgs model. In this vacuum, massless fermion-antifermion pairs and coherent collection of gauge bosons condense, which determine each other's mass. When a local excitation of the condensed gauge bosons propagates in space, a Higgs-like boson appears. The effective coupling of this Higgs-like boson to gauge bosons is calculated as a one-loop process. With this coupling, the total cross section of the pair annihilation of fermion and antifermion to gauge boson pair is calculated. Renormalizability of this model is discussed using the inductive method. Since the Higgs Lagrangian is not assumed, the divergence we must renormalize is only the logarithmic divergence, not the quadratic one.

Abstract:The solution of the axial U(1) problem, the role of the topology of the gauge group in forcing the breaking of axial symmetry in any irreducible representation of the observable algebra and the theta vacua structure are revisited in the temporal gauge with attention to the mathematical consistency of the derivations. Both realizations with strong and weak Gauss law are discussed; the control of the general mechanisms and structures is obtained on the basis of the localization of the (large) gauge transformations and the local generation of the chiral symmetry. The Schwinger model in the temporal gauge exactly reproduces the general results.

Correlated Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking Induced by Zero-Point Fluctuations in A Quantum Mixture

Abstract:We propose a form of spontaneous symmetry breaking driven by zero-point quantum fluctuations. To be specific, we consider the low-energy dynamics of a mixture of two species of spin-1 Bose gases. It is demonstrated that the quantum fluctuations lift a degeneracy regarding the relative orientations of the spin directors of the two species and result in correlation or locking between these macroscopic variables. This locking persists in the presence of the trapping potential and weak magnetic fields, allowing, in principle, an experimental probe of this correlated spontaneous symmetry breaking as a macroscopic manifestation of zero-point quantum fluctuations.

Abstract:We study the stability of the highest symmetric solution (Wigner-solution) of Dyson–Schwinger equations in chiral limit and at zero temperature. Our results confirm that if the chemical potential is not very large, the QCD vacuum is in the chiral symmetry breaking phase and the quantum phase-transition of the chiral symmetry restoration is in first order. Meanwhile, it seems that there is not competition between chiral breaking phase and color superconductivity phase since the color superconductivity phase appears only if the chemical potential is very large. Moreover, we propose that chiral symmetry breaking arises from the positive feedback with respect to the mass perturbation.
Fate of Chiral Symmetries in the Quark-Gluon Plasma from an Instanton-Based Random Matrix Model of QCD

Abstract:We propose a new way of understanding how chiral symmetry is realized in the high temperature phase of QCD. Based on the finding that a simple free instanton gas precisely describes the details of the lowest part of the spectrum of the lattice overlap Dirac operator, we propose an instanton-based random matrix model of QCD with dynamical quarks. Simulations of this model reveal that even for small quark mass the Dirac spectral density has a singularity at the origin, caused by a dilute gas of free instantons. Even though the interaction, mediated by light dynamical quarks creates small instanton-antiinstanton molecules, those do not influence the singular part of the spectrum, and this singular part is shown to dominate Banks-Casher type sums in the chiral limit. By generalizing the Banks-Casher formula for the singular spectrum, we show that in the chiral limit the chiral condensate vanishes if there are at least two massless flavors. Our model also indicates a possible way of resolving a long-standing debate, as it suggests that for two massless quark flavors the $U(1)_{A}$ symmetry is likely to remain broken up to arbitrarily high finite temperatures.

Spontaneous CP Breaking in a QCD-like Theory

Abstract:We examine the phase structure of a QCD-like theory at $\bar\theta =\pi$ obtained from supersymmetric $SU(N)$ QCD perturbed by a small amount of supersymmetry breaking via anomaly mediation (AMSB QCD). The spectrum of this theory matches that of QCD at the massless level, though the superpartners are not decoupled. In this theory it is possible to nail down the phase structure at $\bar\theta=\pi$ as a function of the quark masses and the number of flavors $F$. For one flavor we find that there is a critical quark mass, below which CP is unbroken, while above the critical mass CP is spontaneously broken. At the critical mass there is a second-order phase transition along with a massless $\eta'$. We are able to analytically solve for the minima and the critical mass for $N=2,3$ as well as for the large $N$ limit, while for other $N$ one can find numerical results. For two flavors, we find that CP is always broken as long as the quark masses are equal and non-zero, however there is a non-trivial phase boundary for unequal quark masses, which we find numerically. For $F\geq 3$ we obtain an intricate phase boundary which reproduces the various quark mass limits. All our results are in agreement with the predictions for ordinary QCD that were based on anomaly matching arguments for generalized symmetries and the effective chiral Lagrangian. We also briefly comment on the domain wall solutions first discussed by Draper, and are able to present analytic results for the simplest case of $SU(2)$ with one flavor.

Abstract:We review recent developments in our understanding of the dynamics of strongly-coupled chiral $SU(N)$ gauge theories in four dimensions, problems which are potentially important in our quest to go beyond the standard $SU(3)_{QCD} \times (SU(2) \times U(1))_{GWS}$ model of the fundamental interactions. The generalized symmetries and associated new 't Hooft anomaly-matching constraints allow us to exclude, in a wide class of chiral gauge theories, confining vacuum with full flavor symmetries supported by a set of color-singlet massless composite fermions. The color-flavor-locked dynamical Higgs phase, dynamical Abelianization or more general symmetry breaking phase, appear as plausible IR dynamics, depending on the massless matter fermions present. We revisit and discuss critically several well-known confinement criteria in the literature, for both chiral and vectorlike gauge theories, and propose tentative, new criteria for discriminating different phases. Finally, we review an idea which might sound rather surprising at first, but is indeed realized in some softly-broken supersymmetric theories, that confinement in QCD is a small deformation (in the IR end of the renormalization-group flow) of a strongly-coupled, nonlocal, nonAbelian conformal fixed point.
