Abstract:Novel cyanine dyes (Sqb and Cyb3) with carboxylbenzyl group and different methine chains as solar cell sensitizers were synthesized and the photoelectrochemical behaviors of the TiO2 nanocrystalline electrode sensitized by them were investigated. The results show that Isc (2.76mA/cm2), monochromatic incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) (46%) and η (1.7%) of TiO2 nanocrystalline solar cell sensitized by Sqb were higher than that of TiO2 nanocrystalline solar cell sensitized by Cyb3 when TiO2 nanostructured porous film was 6.5μm thick and was sensitized for 6h and 4h, respectively. The excited state level of these dyes matches the conductive band edge of TiO2 nanoparticles. Therefore, the sensitization of the dyes can increase the photocurrent density of TiO2 nanocrystalline electrode.

Abstract:<p>Photonic crystals have been widely used in solar cells in recent years because of their unique optical properties such as photonic band gap and "slow photon" effect. The introduction of photonic crystals can adjust the propagation and distribution of photons in solar cells. Therefore, a full understanding of the optical properties of photonic crystals and the correct use of photonic crystals are the key to improve the photoelectric conversion efficiency. At present, photonic crystal structures are widely used in dye sensitized solar cell (DSSC) and quantum dots sensitized solar cell (QDSSC), but relatively few in the field of perovskite solar cell (PSC). In this paper, the applications of different types of photonic crystals in silicon solar cells and sensitized solar cells are summarized, and the possible problems are analyzed and commented. It is pointed out that although photonic crystals have many excellent optical control properties, it is difficult to meet the thickness requirements of PSC due to the limitations of preparation technology and structure of photonic crystals. At present, the photoelectric conversion efficiency of photonic crystal PSC is generally low. Therefore, develop new technology for preparing the large area and high quality ultra-thin photonic crystals, make a profound study of photonic crystal light control mechanism, design new structures, and explore new functions of photonic crystals will become the future development direction of photonic crystal solar cells.</p>

Abstract:Photonic crystals are a new type of synthetic microstructure materials which have periodical refraction index variations in the space and produce photonic band gaps similar to electronic band gaps produced by the crystal potentials of semiconductors. In recent years, intensive research efforts have been devoted to the studies of photonic crystals due to their unique abilities to manipulate and control photon behaviors. It presents a brief introduction to the photonic crystal and structure characteristics. Some major fabrication methods are demonstrated and various applications of photonic crystals, such as photonic crystal fiber, photonic crystal waveguide, photonic crystal laser, are also discussed.

Abstract:Photonic crystals are artificial structures with a spatial periodicity of dielectric permittivity on the wavelength scale. This feature results in a spectral region over which no light can propagate within such a material, known as the photonic band gap (PBG). It leads to a unique interaction between light and matter. A photonic crystal can redirect, concentrate, or even trap incident light. Different materials (dielectrics, semiconductors, metals, polymers, etc.) and 1D, 2D, and 3D architectures (layers, inverse opal, woodpile, etc.) of photonic crystals enable great flexibility in designing the optical response of the material. This opens an extensive range of applications, including photovoltaics. Photonic crystals can be used as anti-reflective and light-trapping surfaces, back reflectors, spectrum splitters, absorption enhancers, radiation coolers, or electron transport layers. This paper presents an overview of the developments and trends in designing photonic structures for different photovoltaic applications.

Abstract:In this paper, we present the integration of an absorbing photonic crystal within a thin-film photovoltaic solar cell. Optical simulations performed on a complete solar cell revealed that patterning the hydrogenated amorphous silicon active layer as a 2D photonic crystal membrane enabled to increase its integrated absorption by 28 % between 300 and 720nm, comparing to a similar but unpatterned stack. In order to fabricate such promising cells, we developed a high throughput process based on holographic lithography and reactive ion etching. The influences of the parameters taking part in those processes on the obtained patterns are discussed. Optical measurements performed on the resulting “photonized” solar cell structures underline the regularity of the 2D pattern and a significant absorption increase above 550nm, similarly to what is observed on the simulated absorption spectra. Moreover, our patterned cells are found to be robust with regards to the angle of incidence of the light.

Abstract:In this paper, we present an overview of milestone achievements in the research and development of photonic crystal structures and their perspective applications. We highlight challenges in the analysis techniques, device design, efficient coupling techniques, and fabrication and characterization techniques for both planar and three-dimensional structures. We discuss extensively progress to date to overcome various aspects in the available modeling and simulation tools as well as the necessary fabrication procedures to produce functional photonic crystal structures and devices. Hence, the goal of the work presented in this paper is to present key building blocks, which will in turn facilitate the full utilization of the unique spatial and temporal properties of photonic crystal structures.

Abstract:We review the recent progress in thin-film silicon solar cells with photonic crystals, where absorption enhancement is achieved by using large-area resonant effects in photonic crystals. First, a definitive guideline for enhancing light absorption in a wide wavelength range (600–1100 nm) is introduced, showing that the formation of multiple band edges utilizing higher-order modes confined in the thickness direction and the introduction of photonic superlattice structures enable significant absorption enhancement, exceeding that observed for conventional random scatterers. Subsequently, experimental evidence of this enhancement is demonstrated for a variety of thin-film Si solar cells: ∼500-nm-thick ultrathin microcrystalline silicon cells, few-μm-thick microcrystalline silicon cells, and ∼20-μm-thick thin single-crystalline silicon cells. Abstract:Nanocrystalline wide band gap semiconductors photosensitized with semiconductor nanocrystal quantum dots have recently attracted increasing attention as promising photovoltaic devices. This Perspective addresses several issues related to the choice of nanocrystal materials for quantum dot sensitized solar cells, the methods of quantum dot deposition on mesoporous wide band gap semiconductor layers, and combinations of quantum dots and classical ruthenium dyes as panchromatic sensitizers. It further discusses charge transfer kinetics and electron recombination in quantum dot sensitized solar cells. An alternate emerging concept, a structure combining the latter with a quantum dot based Schottky junction solar cell, is also briefly reviewed. Together these areas offer ample scope for improvements making use of the specific advantages of semiconductor nanocrystals.

Abstract:Photonic crystals are periodic structural materials that have an impact on the propagation properties of photons. Due to their excellent optical, electrical and magnetic properties, their advantages and potential for applications in the above areas are gradually emerging. Therefore, an increasing number of researchers have focused on photonic crystals. In this paper, the characteristics of biological photonic crystal structures, such as those found in butterfly wings, sea mouse bristles, peacock feathers, melon jellyfish epidermal cells, and weevil exoskeletons, are described. The preparation methods of photonic crystals are systematically summarized (including the template method, self-assembly technology, electron beam evaporation coating technology, chemical vapor deposition technology, femtosecond laser two-photon technology, spin coating technology, and a variety of technology mixing), and the characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages of the different methods are compared. Furthermore, the development of photonic crystals in the field of sensors, solar cells, filters, and infrared stealth is discussed, demonstrateing the great development potential of photonic crystals. It is concluded that the realization of photonic crystals with high precision, high sensitivity, angle independence, and large-area uniform preparation is a key problem requiring urgent solution. Moreover, photonic crystals have potential development prospects in the fields of equipment stealth, new concept weapons, production, an daily life.

Improving the performance of quantum well solar cells with photonic crystal

Abstract:The fabrication of quantum well (QW) solar cells with surface photonic crystal (SPC) and embedded photonic crystal (EPC) structures has resulted in solar cells with improved properties. When compared to reference solar cells, the photoluminescence (PL) intensities of SPC solar cells and EPC solar cells have been enhanced by 89% and 114%, respectively. This indicates improved light absorption and emission characteristics in the presence of the periodic patterns. The short-circuit current (Isc) of EPC solar cells is 31% higher than that of reference solar cells, suggesting improved light absorption and carrier generation. On the other hand, SPC solar cells exhibit a 6% higher Isc compared to reference solar cells, and the open-circuit voltage has increased simultaneously. The fill factors (FF) of the solar cells are 84% for reference solar cells, 86% for SPC solar cells, and 76% for EPC solar cells. The higher FF in SPC solar cells suggests improved charge carrier collection efficiency. In terms of photoelectric conversion efficiency, SPC solar cells demonstrate a 10.6% increase, while EPC solar cells show a 7.7% increase. These improvements indicate that the incorporation of periodic patterns in the solar cells enhances their ability to convert light into electrical energy. These findings highlight the potential of photonic crystals engineering for enhancing the performance of solar cells.

Progress in Stimuli-responsive Photonic Crystals with Biological Structures

Abstract:There are diverse photonic structures formed in nature, which can perfectly match the functional and survival demands of the plants or creatures. Inspired by these hierarchical structures, researches have been trying to biomimetic fabrication of responsive photonic crystals through the combination of responsive materials and natural structures for the potential applications in biomedical detections, sensors, decorations and anti-counterfeiting, etc. In this review, progress in stimuli-responsive photonic crystals with biological structures is summarized based on the recent research works, especially those on the variety of the natural photonic crystals with hierarchical structures and the coloration mechanism. The concept of photonic structures in nature is first given and the types are clarified separately with a typical example presented. Generally, these photonic structures can be divided into three categories: 1D, 2D and 3D. Accordingly, the coloration mechanism of these structures is explained. With periodic structures arranged in different directions, some of the nature species obtained the magnificent structural colours, which are ultra-difficult for artificial manufacture. Based on these hierarchically photonic structures, functionalization is achieved by introduction of functional materials into the system, such as noble metal, Fe3O4, carbon nanotubes, and organic materials. This review emphasizes on the fabrication, application and responsive mechanism of the responsive photonic crystals based on the responsive polymers. It is known that there are many kinds of stimuli-responsive polymers. By depositing different kinds of stimuli-responsive polymers onto the nature species, that is biotemplates, the stimuli-responsive photonic crystals can be synthesized. The properties of the deposited polymers can be tuned accurately, which could lead to the change of the parameters of the biotemplates including periodic lengths and refractive indexes upon the environmental stimuli signals. Correspondingly, the coloration of the obtained materials is changed. A summary of the existing problems of the photonic crystals with natural structures is also given, making an outlook for the future research work.

Abstract:Thin silicon solar cells suffer from low light absorption compared to their thick counterparts, especially in the near infra-red regime. In order to obtain high energy conversion efficiency in thin solar cells, an efficient light trapping scheme is required. In this paper, we theoretically demonstrate significant enhancement in efficiency of thin crystalline silicon solar cells by using photonic crystals as the light absorbing layer. In particular, a relative increase of 11.15% and 3.87% in the energy conversion efficiency compared to the optimized conventional design is achieved for 2 microm and 10 microm thicknesses, respectively.

Abstract:With the rapid development of photovoltaic industry in recent years, organic solar cells have attracted much attention due to their advantages of low cost, light weight, capacity of batch production, simple production process and flexible performance. However, there are still some limitations hindering their commercialization process, including low photoelectric conversion efficiency and poor transmission color rendering. The introduction of photonic crystals provides a new way to solve these two problems. Starting from the optimization principle of photonic crystals, the effects of both one-dimensional photonic crystals and two-dimensional photonic crystals on organic solar cells, especially the short circuit current and photoelectric conversion efficiency, are systematically summarized in this paper. Then, we focus on the reasons for the performance improvement of organic solar cells based on one-dimensional photonic crystals and two-dimensional photonic crystals. The results of the experiments and characterization show that the performance improvement is mainly attributed to the photonic crystal acting as the reflector in the device. Photonic bandgap, a vivid property that the photonic crystals have, can block the light transmitting organic solar cells at a certain frequency. So, the light within the photonic bandgap is reflected back into the device, thus promoting the secondary absorption of light by the active layer which can result in the stronger light absorption capacity of the active layer, and then improving the performance of the device. In addition, the reason why one-dimensional photonic crystals can be used to regulate the color rendering of semitransparent organic solar cell is described in detail. This is of great significance to photovoltaic construction industry because semitransparent organic solar cells with excellent color rendering property can be widely used in it. However, due to the limitation of photonic crystal optimization mechanism, the reported applications so far have failed to improve the filling factor and open circuit voltage of the device, and due to the limitation of its own structure, three-dimensional photonic crystals have not been reported to be used in organic solar cells. Finally, by combining the existing research progress of organic optoelectronic devices, we look into the future research direction of organic solar cells based on photonic crystals.

Abstract:The idea of photonic crystal came to be when E. Yablonovitch and S. John recommended a structure in 1987 having periodic alteration of refractive index in one or multiple directions. Photonic crystals have the potential to manipulate and tailor the flow of light across the crystal, which gives advantage to invent many photonic devices on the microscopic scale having very small footprints. In recent years several articles have been published on the advances of photonic crystal-based structures. This review article mainly focuses on the several fabrication techniques of photonic crystals and their applications in different fields. Several photonic crystal-based structures such as logic gates, optical sensors, polarization beam splitters, and absorbers for solar cells are reviewed in this paper to show recent advancements on this trending topic. Also, a brief review of the different steps of fabrication of photonic crystals and different fabrication methods proposed by researchers is articulated in this paper.
