Abstract:ABSTRACTAn all‐Si tandem solar cell has the potential to achieve high conversion efficiency at low cost. However, the selection and synthesis of candidate material remain challenging. In this work, we show that the conventional ‘Si quantum dots (Si QDs) in SiO2 matrix’ approach can lead to the formation of over‐sized Si nanocrystals especially when doped with phosphorous, making the size‐dependent quantum confinement less effective. Also, our investigation has shown that the high resistivity of this material has become the performance bottleneck of the solar cell. To resolve these matters, we propose a new design based on Si QDs embedded in a SiO2/Si3N4 hybrid matrix. By replacing the SiO2 tunnel barriers by the Si3N4 layers, the new material manages to constrain the growth of doped Si QDs effectively and enhances the apparent band gap, as shown in X‐ray diffraction, Raman, photoluminescence and optical spectroscopic measurements. Besides, electrical characterisation on Si QD/c‐Si heterointerface test structures indicates the new material possesses improved vertical carrier transport properties. Abstract:Silicon nanocrystals with an average size of approximately 4 nm dispersed in SiO2/Si3N4 hybrid matrix have been synthesised by magnetron sputtering followed by a high-temperature anneal. To gain understanding of the photon absorption and emission mechanisms of this material, several samples are characterised optically via spectroscopy and photoluminescence measurements. The values of optical band gap are extracted from interference-minimised absorption and luminescence spectra. Measurement results suggest that these nanocrystals exhibit transitions of both direct and indirect types. Possible mechanisms of absorption and emission as well as an estimation of exciton binding energy are also discussed.

Abstract:The concept of third-generation photovoltaics is to significantly increase device efficiencies whilst still using thin-film processes and abundant non-toxic materials. A strong potential approach is to fabricate tandem cells using thin-film deposition that can optimise collection of energy in a series of cells with decreasing band gap stacked on top of each other. Quantum dot materials, in which Si quantum dots (QDs) are embedded in a dielectric matrix, offer the potential to tune the effective band gap, through quantum confinement, and allow fabrication of optimised tandem solar cell devices in one growth run in a thin-film process. Such cells can be fabricated by sputtering of thin layers of silicon rich oxide sandwiched between a stoichiometric oxide that on annealing crystallise to form Si QDs of uniform and controllable size. For approximately 2-nm diameter QDs, these result in an effective band gap of 1.8 eV. Introduction of phosphorous or boron during the growth of the multilayers results in doping and a rectifying junction, which demonstrates photovoltaic behaviour with an open circuit voltage (VOC) of almost 500 mV. However, the doping behaviour of P and B in these QD materials is not well understood. A modified modulation doping model for the doping mechanisms in these materials is discussed which relies on doping of a sub-oxide region around the Si QDs.

Abstract:Third-generation solar cells are designed to achieve high power-conversion efficiency while being low-cost to produce. These solar cells have the ability to surpass the Shockley–Queisser limit. This review focuses on different types of third-generation solar cells such as dye-sensitized solar cells, Perovskite-based cells, organic photovoltaics, quantum dot solar cells, and tandem solar cells, a stacked form of different materials utilizing a maximum solar spectrum to achieve high power conversion efficiency. Apart from these solar cells, other third-generation technologies are also discussed, including up-conversion, down-conversion, hot-carrier, and multiple exciton. This review provides an overview of the previous work in the field, alongside an introduction to the technologies, including their working principles and components. Advancements made in the different components and improvements in performance parameters such as the fill factor, open circuit voltage, conversion efficiency, and short-circuit current density are discussed. We also highlight the hurdles preventing these technologies from reaching commercialization.

Abstract:<p>Photonic crystals have been widely used in solar cells in recent years because of their unique optical properties such as photonic band gap and "slow photon" effect. The introduction of photonic crystals can adjust the propagation and distribution of photons in solar cells. Therefore, a full understanding of the optical properties of photonic crystals and the correct use of photonic crystals are the key to improve the photoelectric conversion efficiency. At present, photonic crystal structures are widely used in dye sensitized solar cell (DSSC) and quantum dots sensitized solar cell (QDSSC), but relatively few in the field of perovskite solar cell (PSC). In this paper, the applications of different types of photonic crystals in silicon solar cells and sensitized solar cells are summarized, and the possible problems are analyzed and commented. It is pointed out that although photonic crystals have many excellent optical control properties, it is difficult to meet the thickness requirements of PSC due to the limitations of preparation technology and structure of photonic crystals. At present, the photoelectric conversion efficiency of photonic crystal PSC is generally low. Therefore, develop new technology for preparing the large area and high quality ultra-thin photonic crystals, make a profound study of photonic crystal light control mechanism, design new structures, and explore new functions of photonic crystals will become the future development direction of photonic crystal solar cells.</p>

Abstract:Many working in the field of photovoltaics believe that ‘first generation’ silicon wafer-based solar cells sooner or later will be replaced by a ‘second generation’ of lower cost thin-film technology, probably also involving a different semiconductor. Historically, CdS, a-Si, CuInSe2, CdTe and, more recently, thin-film Si have been regarded as key thin-film candidates. Since any mature solar cell technology is likely to evolve to the stage where costs are dominated by those of the constituent materials, be it silicon wafers or glass sheet, it is argued that photovoltaics will evolve, in its most mature form, to a ‘third generation’ of high-efficiency thin-film technology. By high efficiency, what is meant is energy conversion values double or triple the 15–20% range presently targeted. Tandem cells provide the best-known example of such high-efficiency approaches, where efficiency can be increased merely by adding more cells of different band gap to a stack. However, a range of other better-integrated approaches are possible that offer similar efficiency to an infinite stack of such tandem cells.

Abstract:Inorganic/organic ternary hybrid structures are emerging as promising candidates for the fabrication of novel solar cells. As one of the most important inorganic solar cell material, silicon (Si) is worth careful exploration during the preparation of the hybrid structures. Here we incorporate the nanoscale form of Si, Si nanocrystals (NCs), into the classical bulk-heterojunction organic solar cells based on poly (3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM). It is found that the solar cell efficiency may increase by ~ 40% when ~ 5% of PCBM in the original P3HT:PCBM blend is replaced with Si NCs. The efficiency enhancement is enabled by the improved short-wavelength absorption, optimized film structure and cascade energy-level alignment.

Abstract:<p>Piezotronics and piezo-phototronics based on the third-generation semiconductor (such as ZnO, GaN, CdS, and monolayer chalcogenides) and two-dimensional materials, have attracted increasing attention due to the coupling characteristic of piezoelectric, photon excitation, and semiconductor properties. Strain can not only induce piezoelectric charges but also modulate bandgap of piezotronic materials. In this paper, we propose a structure of piezo-phototronic multijunction solar cell based on single-type two-dimensional piezoelectric semiconductor materials. By using the theory of detailed balance limit, the open circuit voltage and short circuit current of this piezo-phototronic multijunction solar cell are calculated. The results indicate that power conversion efficiency of the piezo-phototronic multijunction solar cell can theoretically reach to 33%, under the blackbody of temperature 6000 K, which is higher than the well-known theoretical Shockley-Queisser limit. This work provides guidance to design the next generation ultra-high performance piezo-phototronic solar cells.</p>

Abstract:Solar cells based on a three-dimensional (3D) crystalline perovskite framework exhibit desired photoconversion efficiency. However, 3D perovskites are prone to surface defects, leading to severe Shockley–Read–Hall (SRH) recombination and insufficient interactions between components, resulting in lower efficiency and stability. In contrast, two-dimensional (2D) perovskites have comparatively better excellent stability in hot and humid environments but suffer from lower efficiency. Recently, researchers reported that surface passivation of 3D perovskite by 2D perovskite improves the stability of solar cells without compromising their efficiency. In this review, the recent advances in surface modification of three-dimensional perovskites using two-dimensional perovskites are discussed. The crystal structures, photoelectric properties, and surface passivation strategies of 2D/3D perovskite solar cells with different components are systematically presented. Finally, the prospect of using two-dimensional perovskite passivation technology to further improve photovoltaic performance is discussed.

Abstract:Semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) prepared by wet-chemical routes have been proposed as an attractive candidate for fabrication of the third-gene ration thin-film solar cells due to their quantum confinement effects and excellent dispersion ability in polymer films. However, to date, a solar cell incorporating semiconductor NCs in the photoactive layer still has rather low efficiency due to the low carrier mobility of the non-continued NC phase and the possible radiative recombination in NCs. To avoid these disadvantages, NCs have been proposed and applied as a luminescent species in a passive photon converting layer to modify the solar spectrum before the light enters the photovoltaic device. Photon conversion processes, including up-conversion, down-conversion, and down-shifting, have been observed in various colloidal NC samples and have great potential to enhance photovoltaic performance when applied to the existing single-junction solar cells or narrow-band molecular-based devices.

Abstract:With the rapid development of photovoltaic industry in recent years, organic solar cells have attracted much attention due to their advantages of low cost, light weight, capacity of batch production, simple production process and flexible performance. However, there are still some limitations hindering their commercialization process, including low photoelectric conversion efficiency and poor transmission color rendering. The introduction of photonic crystals provides a new way to solve these two problems. Starting from the optimization principle of photonic crystals, the effects of both one-dimensional photonic crystals and two-dimensional photonic crystals on organic solar cells, especially the short circuit current and photoelectric conversion efficiency, are systematically summarized in this paper. Then, we focus on the reasons for the performance improvement of organic solar cells based on one-dimensional photonic crystals and two-dimensional photonic crystals. The results of the experiments and characterization show that the performance improvement is mainly attributed to the photonic crystal acting as the reflector in the device. Photonic bandgap, a vivid property that the photonic crystals have, can block the light transmitting organic solar cells at a certain frequency. So, the light within the photonic bandgap is reflected back into the device, thus promoting the secondary absorption of light by the active layer which can result in the stronger light absorption capacity of the active layer, and then improving the performance of the device. In addition, the reason why one-dimensional photonic crystals can be used to regulate the color rendering of semitransparent organic solar cell is described in detail. This is of great significance to photovoltaic construction industry because semitransparent organic solar cells with excellent color rendering property can be widely used in it. However, due to the limitation of photonic crystal optimization mechanism, the reported applications so far have failed to improve the filling factor and open circuit voltage of the device, and due to the limitation of its own structure, three-dimensional photonic crystals have not been reported to be used in organic solar cells. Finally, by combining the existing research progress of organic optoelectronic devices, we look into the future research direction of organic solar cells based on photonic crystals.

Abstract:Both the first generation crystalline Si and the second generation non-crystalline Si thin film solar cells dominate the current photovoltaic(PV)industry.The third generation nanotechnology approaches aim to decrease costs to well below 1.0 USD/W level of second generation PVs to 0.5 USD/W,potentially to 0.2 USD/W or better,by significantly increasing efficiencies but maintaining the economic and environmental cost advantages of thin-film deposition techniques.In this paper,we present a brief review on the recent achievements in Si nanocrystalline and nanowire solar cells as the future PV industry may belong to these nanostructured Si solar cells.The emphasis is on hydrogenated nanocrystalline silicon(nc-Si:H)tandem thin film solar cells with the band gap tuned by the dot size,the preliminary application of Si nanowire arrays in planar Si solar cells and radial Si solar cell concept including single nanowire Si solar cells,and multiple exciton generation nc-Si:H hot carrier solar cells.

Abstract:We review the recent progress in thin-film silicon solar cells with photonic crystals, where absorption enhancement is achieved by using large-area resonant effects in photonic crystals. First, a definitive guideline for enhancing light absorption in a wide wavelength range (600–1100 nm) is introduced, showing that the formation of multiple band edges utilizing higher-order modes confined in the thickness direction and the introduction of photonic superlattice structures enable significant absorption enhancement, exceeding that observed for conventional random scatterers. Subsequently, experimental evidence of this enhancement is demonstrated for a variety of thin-film Si solar cells: ∼500-nm-thick ultrathin microcrystalline silicon cells, few-μm-thick microcrystalline silicon cells, and ∼20-μm-thick thin single-crystalline silicon cells. Abstract:The implementation of quantum dots in third generation solar cells will be of importance to enhance current transport mechanisms and quantum tunneling effects. In this study, it was demonstrated that silicon quantum dots with diameters of 3 similar to 8 nm in an oxide matrix were successfully fabricated. The quantum dots were produced by depositing an amorphous oxide matrix with a SiO target followed by annealing at different high temperatures. The morphological features of the oxide matrix were characterized. The optical properties were performed by Raman spectroscopy and photoluminescence spectrum respectively to confirm the effects of quantum dots. Reflectance spectrum displayed strong light absorption with wavelength higher than 550nm by the Si quantum dots, and XRD results demonstrated the crystallization phenomenon in the oxide matrix.

Abstract:Photonic crystals are artificial structures with a spatial periodicity of dielectric permittivity on the wavelength scale. This feature results in a spectral region over which no light can propagate within such a material, known as the photonic band gap (PBG). It leads to a unique interaction between light and matter. A photonic crystal can redirect, concentrate, or even trap incident light. Different materials (dielectrics, semiconductors, metals, polymers, etc.) and 1D, 2D, and 3D architectures (layers, inverse opal, woodpile, etc.) of photonic crystals enable great flexibility in designing the optical response of the material. This opens an extensive range of applications, including photovoltaics. Photonic crystals can be used as anti-reflective and light-trapping surfaces, back reflectors, spectrum splitters, absorption enhancers, radiation coolers, or electron transport layers. This paper presents an overview of the developments and trends in designing photonic structures for different photovoltaic applications.

Abstract:Photonic crystals are a new type of synthetic microstructure materials which have periodical refraction index variations in the space and produce photonic band gaps similar to electronic band gaps produced by the crystal potentials of semiconductors. In recent years, intensive research efforts have been devoted to the studies of photonic crystals due to their unique abilities to manipulate and control photon behaviors. It presents a brief introduction to the photonic crystal and structure characteristics. Some major fabrication methods are demonstrated and various applications of photonic crystals, such as photonic crystal fiber, photonic crystal waveguide, photonic crystal laser, are also discussed.

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells represent a promising third-generation photovoltaic technology with low fabrication cost and high power conversion efficiency. In light of the rapid development of perovskite materials and devices, a systematic survey on the latest advancements covering a broad range of related work is urgently needed. This review summarizes the recent major advances in the research of perovskite solar cells from a material science perspective. The discussed topics include the devices based on different type of perovskites (organic-inorganic hybrid, all-inorganic, and lead-free perovskite and perovskite quantum dots), the properties of perovskite defects, different type of charge transport materials (organic, polymeric, and inorganic hole transport materials and inorganic and organic electron transport materials), counter electrodes, and interfacial materials used to improve the efficiency and stability of devices. Most discussions focus on the key progresses reported within the recent five years. Meanwhile, the major issues limiting the production of perovskite solar cells and the prospects for the future development of related materials are discussed.

Abstract:In this paper we present novel light trapping designs applied to stand alone and multiple junction thin film silicon solar cells. The new designs incorporate one dimensional photonic crystals as band pass filters that reflect short light wavelengths (400-1100 nm) and transmit longer wavelengths(1100-1800 nm) at the interface between two adjacent cells. In addition, nano structured diffractive gratings that cut into the photonic crystal layers are incorporated to redirect incoming waves and hence increase the optical path length of light within the solar cells. Two designs based on the nano structured gratings that have been realized using the scattering matrix and particle swarm optimization methods are presented. We also show preliminary fabrication results of the proposed light trapping grating structures. (C) 2008 Optical Society of America.
