Abstract:Microcapsules were synthesized by in-situ polymerization with MUF resin modified by nano-Al2O3 as wall material and epoxy resin as the core material. The morphology, structure and thermal properties of the microcapsules were characterized by optical microscope(OM), scanning electron microscope(SEM), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) and thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA). The microcapsules were applied to the epoxy resin matrix to prepare self-repair coating. The thermal property, mechanical properties, self-healing property and the electrochemical property of the coating were investigated. The results show that, when the core/wall ratio is 1.5 : 1 and the content of nano-Al2O3 is 4.5%, nano-Al2O3 is evenly distributed in the wall. The surface roughness and the thermal stability of microcapsules increase. When the microcapsules content is 5%, the thermal stability of the coating increases. The tensile strength, the bending strength, the impact strength and the bonding strength of the coating increase by 111.9%, 55.1%, 10.6% and 51.9%, respectively. The coating possesses good self-healing performance. The corrosion resistance of the coating increases with the increase of the microcapsule content.

Abstract:The self-healing poly(urea-formaldehyde) microcapsules were prepared by in-situ polymerization with epoxy resin as the core materials.The optimum preparation technology of microcapsule was determined by studying the effect of raw material amount, reaction temperature, acidif ication value and curing time on microcapsule particle size distribution and surface morphology.The forming mechanism of microcapsule was investigated by inspecting the forming process of microcapsule.The microcapsule was added into urea-formaldehyde resin.The results show that:the microcapsules with high coating ratio, compact structure, and even particle size are prepared by the optimum prepration technology, the microcapsules can be reserved at room temperature for one week without agglomeration and rupture;adding 9% microcapsules into urea-formldehyde resin, the distribution of the microcapsules is uniform, the toughness of urea-formaldehyde resin composite is improved.

Abstract:Epoxy resin coated polystyrene self-repairing microcapsules were prepared by in-situ polymerization,using epoxy matrix and the dilution benzyl alcohol as core materials,styrene /divinylbenzene as shell material.The effects of mass ratio of wall material to core material,emulsifier content,the reaction temperature and agitator velocity on microcapsule particle distribution and surface morphology were studied.The optimum preparation techniques are as follows:the mass ratio of wall material to core material is 3:10,n(styrene):n(divinylbenzene)is 10:1,the content of DBS and Arabic gum emulsifier is 3%,the reaction time is 8 h at 70～80 ℃.The microcapsules with close structure,even particle size were prepared.The microcapsules are obtained with average diameter 125 μm,film thickness 30～50 μm and content of core 72%.
Towards the development of self-healing and antibacterial dental nanocomposites via incorporation of novel acrylic microcapsules

Abstract:Objective: The main aim of the current work was to develop the novel self-healing dental composites contained poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) microcapsules. The effects of PMMA microcapsule content in self-healing performance and mechanical properties of dental composites including flexural strength, flexural modulus, and fracture toughness were discussed. The antibacterial activity and non-toxicity properties of optimum self-healing dental composites were also investigated. Methods: Novel acrylic microcapsules were prepared using triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) as healing agent and PMMA as microcapsule shell via solvent evaporation method. The silica nanoparticles with the mean size of 15-20 nm were treated by 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPS) to enhance their adhesion and dispersion within the acrylic matrix of composite. Acrylic microcapsules with mass fractions of 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15% were added into a mixture of acrylic resins and MPS-grafted SiO2 nanoparticles. The strength and elastic modulus of dental composites were measured by the flexural test. The single edge V-notched beam (SEVNB) method was applied to investigate fracture toughness (KIC) and healing efﬁciency. The results were then statistically analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) at the conﬁdence level of 0.95. Results: Acrylic microcapsules were synthesized with the mean size around 30 µm and the core content of about 15 wt%. The grafting percentage of MPS surface modifier onto SiO2 nanoparticles was measured 3.2%. The incorporation of PMMA microcapsules into the dental composites had no significant effect on flexural properties. The self-healing dental composites also indicated the high efficient healing performance in the range of 78-121%. The self-healing dental composites also exhibited impressive antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans). The MTT assay also revealed that the incorporation of acrylic microcapsules in dental composites has no cytotoxicity effects. SIGNIﬁCANCE: In the current study, for the first time, the self-healing dental nanocomposites contained acrylic microcapsules were prepared with excellent healing performance and antibacterial properties.
[Development of novel self-healing and antibacterial resin composite containing microcapsules filled with polymerizable healing monomer]

Abstract:Objective: To develop novel self- healing and antibacterial resin composite containing microcapsules filled with polymerizable healing monomer, and to measure its properties for further clinical application. Methods: Microcapsules filled with healing monomer of triethylene glycol dimethacrylate were synthesized according to methods introduced in the previous research. Microcapsules were added into novel resin composite containing nano-antibacterial silica fillers grafted with long chain alkyl quaternary ammonium at mass fractions of 0, 2.5%, 5.0%, 7.5% or 10.0%. A commercial resin composite (Tetric N-Ceram) was used as control. Flexural test was used to measure resin composite flexural strength and elastic modulus. The single edge V-notched beam method was used to measure fracture toughness and self-healing efficiency. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to examine the fractured surface of selected specimen for investigation of fracture mechanisms. Results: The flexural strength and elastic modulus of the resin composite were (96.4 ± 14.3) MPa and (6.2 ± 1.1) GPa respectively after incorporation of microcapsules up to 7.5%, and no significant difference was found between the experimental group and the control group [(99.1 ± 11.9) MPa and (6.1 ± 1.1) GPa] (P>0.05). The self-healing efficiency of (66.8 ± 7.0)% and (79.3 ± 9.7)% were achieved for resin composite with microcapsule mass fractions at 7.5% and 10.0%. SEM image showed that irregular films covered the fractured surface. Conclusions This novel self-healing and antibacterial resin composite containing microcapsules filled with polymerizable healing monomer exhibited a promising self- healing ability, which enabled itself well up for combating bulk fracture and secondary caries in clinical application.

Abstract:Poly(melamine-urea-formaldehyde) (MUF) microcapsules used as self-healing component of composites were prepared by in situ polymerization. The surface of MUF microcapsules was modified by 3-aminopropyltriethoxy silane-coupling agent (KH550). The interfacial interactions between MUF microcapsules and KH550 were studied by Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR). FTIR results show that the silane-coupling agent molecule binds strongly to the MUF microcapsules surface. A chemical bond (Si?O?C) is formed by the reaction between the Si?OH and the hydroxyl group of MUF microcapsule. This modification improves the thermal properties of microcapsules. Optical microscope (OM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) show that a thin layer is formed on the surface of MUF microcapsules. The interfacial adhesion effect between MUF microcapsules and unsaturated polyester matrix was investigated. MUF microcapsules disperse evenly in the composites. When crack propagated, the microcapsules were broken and the repair agent flowed from the microcapsules to react with the curing agent. Then the crosslinking structure was formed and the composite was repaired. The tensile properties, impact properties, and dynamic mechanical properties of composites have been evaluated. The results indicate that the silane-coupling agent plays an important role in improving the interfacial performance between the microcapsules and the matrix, as well as the mechanical properties of the composites. The preparation and characterization of double-layer microcapsules used for the self-healing of resin matrix composites

Abstract:In this work, diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS) was used as a curing agent adsorbed at the periphery of single-layer microcapsules with Ag-80 as the healing agent within melamine-formaldehyde resin (MF). The double-layer microcapsules were made by encapsulating the particulates (the single-layer microcapsules decorated with DDS) with MF via in situ polymerization. These double-layer microcapsules simultaneously release healing agent and curing agent upon the fracture of the surrounding matrix, which increases the rate of contact between the two agents, and thus improves the healing efficiency. DDS adsorption plays an important role in the formation and final morphology of the double-layer microcapsules. When using a compound dispersant consisting of 30% Tween 80 and 70% Span 80, the particulates of dispersed DDS were homogeneous and fine. When the pH value was between 3.5 and 4.5, the dispersed DDS and MF (Ag-80) microcapsules had opposite surface charges, and tended to come together due to electrostatic interactions. The morphologies of the microcapsules were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The co-existence and stability of the healing agent and the curing agent before capsule failure were demonstrated by infrared spectrometry (FTIR). The mechanical properties of the double-layer microcapsules were investigated by nanoindentation. The results indicated that the microcapsules fractured earlier than the matrix to repair a crack, and the mechanical properties of the cured microcapsules were similar to those of the resin matrix.

Improving Self-Healing Dental-Restorative Materials with Functionalized and Reinforced Microcapsules

Abstract:Dental resin composites are widely used in clinical settings but often face longevity issues due to the development and accumulation of microcracks, which eventually lead to larger cracks and restoration failure. The incorporation of microcapsules into these resins has been explored to introduce self-healing capability, potentially extending the lifespan of the restorations. This study aims to enhance the performance of self-healing dental resins by optimizing the microcapsules–resin matrix physicochemical interactions. Poly(urea–formaldehyde) (PUF) microcapsules were reinforced with melamine and subsequently subjected to surface functionalization with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) and (3-mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane (MPTMS). Additionally, microcapsules were functionalized with a bilayer approach, incorporating tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) with either APTES or MPTMS. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) confirmed an increased Si:C ratio from 0.006 to 0.165. The functionalization process did not adversely affect the structure of the microcapsules or their healing agent volume. Compared to PUF controls, the functionalized microcapsules demonstrated enhanced healing efficiency, with TEOS/MPTMS-functionalized microcapsules showing the highest performance, showing a toughness recovery of up to 35%. This work introduces a novel approach to functionalization of microcapsules by employing advanced silanizing agents such as APTES and MPTMS, and pioneering bilayer functionalization protocols through their combination with TEOS.

Abstract:The curing process of self-healing microcapsules containing epoxy resin was studied with different shell material such as Poly (urea-formaldehyde), poly (melamine-urea-formaldehyde), Poly (urea-formaldehyde) modified by polyvinyl alcohol, and Poly (urea-formaldehyde) modified by phenol, respectively. The activation energy (Delta E) and the reaction order (n) have been obtained based on Kissinger method, Crane theory and Arrhenius equation. The results showed that: the curing process of epoxy resin as core material in self-healing microcapsules becomes more difficult compared with non-microencapsulated. The stability of shell material impacts on the cure process of core material. The resulting decomposition products of shell materials may participate in the curing reaction. So choosing suitable shell material is particularly important to self-healing microcapsules.
Effect of silanization of poly (urea-formaldehyde) microcapsules on the flexural strength and self-healing efficiency of an experimental self-healing dental resin composite (An in-vitro study)

Abstract:Objectives: This study investigated the impact of using γ-methacryloxypropyl trimethoxy silane (MPS) for surface silanization of poly (urea-formaldehyde) (PUF) microcapsules which enclose a healing liquid of "triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) and N,N dihydroxyethyl-p-toluidine (DHEPT)" on some mechanical properties of an experimental dental composite as well as its self-healing efficiency. Methods: Synthesis of PUF microcapsules was done via in situ polymerization, followed by silanization with MPS silane. Silanized and non-silanized microcapsules were incorporated into a composite containing 30% polymer matrix and 70% fillers at different weight percentages (0%, 5%, 7.5% and 10%). The composite strength and elastic modulus were evaluated by Flexural testing. Fracture toughness KIc and self-healing efficiency were assessed by utilizing the "single edge notched beam" method. Results: Flexural strength of all groups containing silanized microcapsules was non-significantly different from control group without microcapsules. However, in contrast to control group, all groups containing non-silanized microcapsules displayed considerably decreased flexural strength. Adding silanized and non-silanized microcapsules didn't show a significant change in the KIc-virgin. The silanized microcapsules' groups achieved a self-healing efficiency of about 49-77% recovery in KIc-virgin compared to 38-69% for their non-silanized counterparts. Significance: In order to increase the interfacial adhesion with the polymer matrix, improve the mechanical properties, and increase the efficiency of self-healing of dental resin composite, PUF microcapsules were silanized for the first time in the dental field using MPS silane. This innovative silanized microcapsule-containing self-healing composite may hold promise for repairing the damage caused by restorative cracks and extending their service life.

Abstract:Healing agent microcapsules have been used to realize self-healing for polymeric composites. In this work a novel kind of microcapsules encapsulating ethylenediamine (EDA) with epoxy resin as shell material were prepared by interfacial polymerization technology. The oil phase was epoxy resin prepolymer and carbon tetrachloride, and the water phase was EDA and deionized water. Under the action of emulsifier, a stable water-in-oil emulsion was formed. Then the emulsion was added to dimethyl silicone oil, stirred and dispersed, to prepare microcapsules. In addition, the factors affecting the preparation of microcapsules were studied. In this study, Fourier transform infrared(FTIR) was carried out to demonstrate the chemical structure of ethylenediamine microcapsules. Optical microscope(OM) and scanning electron microscope(SEM) were used to observe the morphology of microcapsules. Thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry were done to investigate the thermal properties of microcapsules. Permeability experiment and isothermal aging test were executed to verify the environment resistance of microcapsules. Results showed that EDA was successfully coated in epoxy resin and the microcapsule size was in the range of 50~630 μm. The synthesized microcapsules were thermally stable below 75 °C and perfect permeability resistance to ethanol solvent.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to develop a novel microcapsules applied to self-healing composites. The microcapsules were synthesized by In-situ polymerization technology with poly(ureaformaldehyde) (PUF) as a shell material and dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) as core materials. The effect of processing parameters on the microcapsule’s performance was analyzed. The chemical structure of microcapsule was characterized using fourie-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Morphlogy and shell wall thickness of microcapsule were observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The thermal properties and the stability were analysis using thermal gravity analysis (TGA). The results indicate that PUF microcapsules containing DCPD can be synthesized successfully.

Abstract:Microcapsules for self-healing material were synthesized by in-situ polymerization with urea-formaldehyde resin as the shell material and dicyclopentadiene as the core material.The formation process of microcapsules was observed by using optical microscopy(OM).The chemical structure was characterized by fourier transform infrared(FTIR).The thermal stability and particle size distribution of microcapsules were analyzed by thermogravimetric analysis(TGA) and laser particle size analyzer.The results indicate that dicyclopentadiene is well encapsulated by urea-formaldehyde resin.The microcapsules with smooth surface and good dispersibility are prepared.The microcapsules are obtained with good chemical stability and narrow particle size distribution,and the average particle size is 10.394μm.

Abstract:Resin-based dental composites, commonly used in dentistry, offer several advantages including minimally invasive application, esthetically pleasing appearance, and good physical and mechanical properties. However, these dental composites can be susceptible to microcracks due to various factors in the complex oral environment. These microcracks can potentially lead to clinical restoration failure. Conventional materials and methods are inadequate for detecting and repairing these microcracks in situ. Consequently, incorporating self-healing properties into dental composites has become a necessity. Recent years have witnessed rapid advancements in self-healing polymer materials, drawing inspiration from biological bionics. Microcapsule-based self-healing dental composites (SHDCs) represent some of the most prevalent types of self-healing materials utilized in this domain. In this article, we undertake a comprehensive review of the most recent literature, highlighting key insights and findings related to microcapsule-based SHDCs. Our discussion centers particularly on the preparation techniques, application methods, and the promising future of self-healing microcapsules in the field of dentistry.
Investigation on Microcapsule Self‐healing Mechanism of Polymer Matrix Composites Based on Numerical Simulation

Abstract:Since delamination always occurs in the laminate structures of fiber reinforced polymer composites in engineering applications, developing self-healing composites has become more and more important nowadays, especially for large-scale composite equipment, which is difficult to maintain when in service. In this paper, the micromechanical finite element (FE) models are developed for the polymer matrix composites containing self-healing microcapsules. Based on mesoscale FE simulation and cross reference to related experimental results, we firstly reveal the rupture mechanism of microcapsules, in which the interaction between the microcapsules and microcracks propagated in the resin matrix is investigated by using the extended finite element method in ABAQUS. The mesoscale characteristics of the self-healing agent, dicyclopentadiene, during the healing process, are revealed with the help of the fluid-solid coupling FE module. Especially, the dynamic filling mechanism of the self-healing agent within the microcrack planes is physically interpreted by the use of the capillary effect and contact angle principle. Finally, the healing efficiencies of self-healing composites with different microcapsule sizes and volume fractions are quantitatively evaluated via the virtual mechanical tests of fracture toughness. To be emphasized is that most of the simulation results obtained in this work have exhibited good agreements with the corresponding experimental data, showing a robust reliability of our FE models.

Abstract:This paper shows the results obtained during the synthesis, characterization and self-healing qualitative capacity assessment microcapsules made of polyurethane (PU) shell, a product of emulsion polymerization reaction between diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) and 1,4-butanediol, and within it, as the "encapsulated" self-healing agent, toluene diisocyanate (TDI) or isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI). Microcapsules synthesis and self-healing agent encapsulation were possible due to the difference of diisocyanates reactivity applied in the process, while its self-healing capacity was achieved by the interaction between encapsulated agent (TDI and IPDI) with active groups present in the epoxy matrix. The characterization was performed by means of experimental techniques such as: Universal Attenuated Total Reflection in the middle infrared region (FT-MIR / UATR), Scan Differential Calorimetry (DSC), Optical Microscopy (OM), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) to monitor the synthesis, morphology and thermal stability of the microcapsules. Self-healing qualitative capacity was evaluated through dynamometric test to monitor its effectiveness when it is added in a proportion of 5% in epoxy matrix. The results were satisfactory considering the proposed study about synthesis and characterization of PU microcapsules containing TDI and IPDI as a core agent and the compatibility of core agents with the epoxy matrix.

Novel core-shell double microcapsules synthesize via inverse Pickering emulsion polymerization for self-healing of epoxy resin compounds

Abstract:Microcapsules loading with healing agents are constantly used in engineered self-healing materials. But the synthesis of epoxy resin composites with excellent self-healing effect remains a major challenge. In this paper, 3-(Trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (KH570) was used to modify the nano silica (KHSI) for increasing lipophilicity. Then by using water-in-oil method, the inverse Pickering emulsion was stabilized by KHSI, and the core-shell double microcapsules (CS-DMics) loaded with different healing agents were formed via 1,1-Bis(acryloyloxymethyl)ethyl isocyanate (BEI). SEM and particle size statistical show that the size range of CS-DMics is 10–149.25 μm. Ultimately, the self-healing epoxy resin compound (Sh-ERC) was acquired by combining CS-DMics with epoxy resin substrate materials. The thermal properties, mechanical properties, self-healing properties and electrical conductivity were tested. It is found that Sh-ERC has perfect self-healing performance when the cracks occur and the microcapsules release healing agent for repairing. The self-healing effect of Sh-ERC is better with more CS-DMics content, and the self-healing efficiency is up to 86.5% when the content of CS-DMics is 40%. It has an excellent self-healing performance for engineering materials.

Abstract:It is a novel study field for automatic healing composite by using microcapsules. A series of microcapsules are prepared by in-situ polymerization technology with poly (urea-formaldehyde) (PUF) as a shell material and dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) as core materials. The effects of surfactant on the physical properties of poly (urea-formaldehyde) microcapsules were researched by using Styrene/maleic anhydride copolymer (SMA), Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (DBS) solutions of different concentration. The properties of microcapsules, including the surface morphology, chemical structure, and thermal properties of microcapsules are characterized by using Optics microscope (OM), Fourier transfer infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Thermal gravity analysis (TGA). The content of core material was calculated. The results indicated that PUF microcapsules can be synthesized successfully. The DBS was favorable to microcapsulation and the microcapsules had smooth outer surface when the concentration of DBS was close to critical micelle concentration (CMC). The PUF microcapsules filled with DCPD had the content of DCPD was 85% and exhibit a good chemical stability below 218°C.
