Abstract:The self-healing poly(urea-formaldehyde) microcapsules were prepared by in-situ polymerization with epoxy resin as the core materials.The optimum preparation technology of microcapsule was determined by studying the effect of raw material amount, reaction temperature, acidif ication value and curing time on microcapsule particle size distribution and surface morphology.The forming mechanism of microcapsule was investigated by inspecting the forming process of microcapsule.The microcapsule was added into urea-formaldehyde resin.The results show that:the microcapsules with high coating ratio, compact structure, and even particle size are prepared by the optimum prepration technology, the microcapsules can be reserved at room temperature for one week without agglomeration and rupture;adding 9% microcapsules into urea-formldehyde resin, the distribution of the microcapsules is uniform, the toughness of urea-formaldehyde resin composite is improved.

Abstract:The work aims to prepare binary self-healing coating containing epoxy resin microcapsules and study mechanical properties self-healing property of the coating. The binary self-healing epoxy coating was prepared by adding self-made epoxy resin E-51/urea-melamine-formaldehyde microcapsules and latent curing agent (2-methylimidazole) to epoxy resin matrix in certain proportion. Bending property, impact resistance and tensile strength of the coating were tested with paint film elasticity testing machine, paint film impact testing machine and universal tensile testing machine. Self-healing property of the coating was investigated with OM and SEM. Electrochemical property was tested with EIS. The binary self-healing coating containing epoxy resin microcapsules was successfully prepared. When the microcapsules content in the coating reached 3%, the impact strength and tensile strength of the coating increased by 10.6% and 14.6%, respectively. When the 2-methylimidazole and mi-crocapsules content was 6% and 5%, respectively, the self-healing property of the coating was excellent. When the microcap-sules content in the coating was 9%, electrochemical impedance value of the coating was up to 1.2×105ohms. The addition of microcapsules can effectively improve the impact strength and tensile strength of the coating. As the content of latent curing agent increases in the coating, the self-healing property of the coating gradually improves. When the content of latent curing agent reaches a certain value, the self-healing property of the coating improves as the microcapsules content increases in the coating. The electrochemical impedance value of the coating increases with the increase of microcapsules content.

Abstract:Microcapsules were synthesized by in-situ polymerization with MUF resin modified by nano-Al2O3 as wall material and epoxy resin as the core material. The morphology, structure and thermal properties of the microcapsules were characterized by optical microscope(OM), scanning electron microscope(SEM), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) and thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA). The microcapsules were applied to the epoxy resin matrix to prepare self-repair coating. The thermal property, mechanical properties, self-healing property and the electrochemical property of the coating were investigated. The results show that, when the core/wall ratio is 1.5 : 1 and the content of nano-Al2O3 is 4.5%, nano-Al2O3 is evenly distributed in the wall. The surface roughness and the thermal stability of microcapsules increase. When the microcapsules content is 5%, the thermal stability of the coating increases. The tensile strength, the bending strength, the impact strength and the bonding strength of the coating increase by 111.9%, 55.1%, 10.6% and 51.9%, respectively. The coating possesses good self-healing performance. The corrosion resistance of the coating increases with the increase of the microcapsule content.

Abstract:The curing process of self-healing microcapsules containing epoxy resin was studied with different shell material such as Poly (urea-formaldehyde), poly (melamine-urea-formaldehyde), Poly (urea-formaldehyde) modified by polyvinyl alcohol, and Poly (urea-formaldehyde) modified by phenol, respectively. The activation energy (Delta E) and the reaction order (n) have been obtained based on Kissinger method, Crane theory and Arrhenius equation. The results showed that: the curing process of epoxy resin as core material in self-healing microcapsules becomes more difficult compared with non-microencapsulated. The stability of shell material impacts on the cure process of core material. The resulting decomposition products of shell materials may participate in the curing reaction. So choosing suitable shell material is particularly important to self-healing microcapsules.

Abstract:Epoxy resin coated polystyrene self-repairing microcapsules were prepared by in-situ polymerization,using epoxy matrix and the dilution benzyl alcohol as core materials,styrene /divinylbenzene as shell material.The effects of mass ratio of wall material to core material,emulsifier content,the reaction temperature and agitator velocity on microcapsule particle distribution and surface morphology were studied.The optimum preparation techniques are as follows:the mass ratio of wall material to core material is 3:10,n(styrene):n(divinylbenzene)is 10:1,the content of DBS and Arabic gum emulsifier is 3%,the reaction time is 8 h at 70～80 ℃.The microcapsules with close structure,even particle size were prepared.The microcapsules are obtained with average diameter 125 μm,film thickness 30～50 μm and content of core 72%.

Abstract:Microcapsules with adequate performance are required for self-healing materials. Novel self-repairing microcapsules with better heat resistance and water resistance were prepared by introducing melamine to urea–formaldehyde resin as wall material. The as-synthesized microcapsules were studied by various characterizations techniques, including scanning electron microscope (SEM), optical microscope (OM), particle size analyzer (PSA), Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and contact angle meter. Spherical poly(urea–formaldehyde) microcapsules (mean size: 96μm) and melamine modified poly(urea–formaldehyde) microcapsules (mean size: 46μm, wall thickness: ∼3μm) were obtained when the amount of melamine was 6–8wt% and the amount of core materials was 75wt%. After modified by melamine, the water-resistance of microcapsule is improved and contact angle increases from 43° to 50°. The heat resistance, solvent resistance, acid resistance and alkali resistance are improved because of triazine ring in melamine, which resulting in long storage time for microcapsule at room temperature.

Abstract:Polyurea microcapsules with Ethylenediamine (EDA) as the core material were synthesized. A set of characterization methods, including optical and scanning electron microscopy (OM and SEM), the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to confirm the microcapsule morphology and chemical structures. The influence of emulsifier content and stirring rate on size and morphology of the microcapsules was investigated, and the self-healing performance of EDA-Polyurea microcapsule/epoxy coatings was evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements. The results showed that the microcapsules obtained had good spherical shape with a mean diameter of 0.54–0.70 μm. Compared with pure core material, the microcapsule showed excellent thermostability, and the content of core materials was up to 56.00 wt%. The epoxy coating with 5.0 wt% EDA-Polyurea microcapsules achieved average corrosion resistance efficiencies of 90.00%, significantly enhancing the capability of the scratched coating to resist external corrosion.

Abstract:Poly(melamine-urea-formaldehyde) (MUF) microcapsules used as self-healing component of composites were prepared by in situ polymerization. The surface of MUF microcapsules was modified by 3-aminopropyltriethoxy silane-coupling agent (KH550). The interfacial interactions between MUF microcapsules and KH550 were studied by Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR). FTIR results show that the silane-coupling agent molecule binds strongly to the MUF microcapsules surface. A chemical bond (Si?O?C) is formed by the reaction between the Si?OH and the hydroxyl group of MUF microcapsule. This modification improves the thermal properties of microcapsules. Optical microscope (OM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) show that a thin layer is formed on the surface of MUF microcapsules. The interfacial adhesion effect between MUF microcapsules and unsaturated polyester matrix was investigated. MUF microcapsules disperse evenly in the composites. When crack propagated, the microcapsules were broken and the repair agent flowed from the microcapsules to react with the curing agent. Then the crosslinking structure was formed and the composite was repaired. The tensile properties, impact properties, and dynamic mechanical properties of composites have been evaluated. The results indicate that the silane-coupling agent plays an important role in improving the interfacial performance between the microcapsules and the matrix, as well as the mechanical properties of the composites. Abstract:Urea-formaldehyde microcapsules containing epoxy resin is a promising material for self-healing design. The microcapsules were prepared by in-situ polymerization in an oil-in-water emulsion. The microcapsule formation process was monitored using optical microscopy. Surface morphology was observed using field emission scanning electron microscopy. The thermal property of microcapsules was characterized using thermogravimetric analysis. The results indicate that microcapsule wall has a rough outer surface and a smooth inner surface. The microcapsule size is controlled by different agitation rates. Microcapsules have a good thermal stability below 157°C.

Abstract:Microcapsules were prepared by in situ polymerization technology with poly(urea-formaldehyde) (PUF)-grafted γ-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxy silane (KH560) copolymer as a shell material and dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) as core materials. The aim was to improve the interfacial bond between microcapsules and epoxy matrix in composites through the epoxy functional group in KH560. The microcapsulating mechanism was discussed and the process was explained. The morphology and shell wall thickness of microcapsules were observed by using scanning electron microscopy. The size of microcapsules was measured using optical microscope and the size distribution was investigated based on data sets of at least 200 measurements. The chemical structure and thermal properties of microcapsules were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectra, and thermogravimetric analysis. Results indicted that the PUF-graft KH560 microcapsules containing DCPD can be synthesized successfully; the epoxy functional group was grafted on the wall material. The microcapsule size is in the range of 40–190 μm with an average of 125 μm. Abstract:Microcapsules loading with healing agents are constantly used in engineered self-healing materials. But the synthesis of epoxy resin composites with excellent self-healing effect remains a major challenge. In this paper, 3-(Trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (KH570) was used to modify the nano silica (KHSI) for increasing lipophilicity. Then by using water-in-oil method, the inverse Pickering emulsion was stabilized by KHSI, and the core-shell double microcapsules (CS-DMics) loaded with different healing agents were formed via 1,1-Bis(acryloyloxymethyl)ethyl isocyanate (BEI). SEM and particle size statistical show that the size range of CS-DMics is 10–149.25 μm. Ultimately, the self-healing epoxy resin compound (Sh-ERC) was acquired by combining CS-DMics with epoxy resin substrate materials. The thermal properties, mechanical properties, self-healing properties and electrical conductivity were tested. It is found that Sh-ERC has perfect self-healing performance when the cracks occur and the microcapsules release healing agent for repairing. The self-healing effect of Sh-ERC is better with more CS-DMics content, and the self-healing efficiency is up to 86.5% when the content of CS-DMics is 40%. It has an excellent self-healing performance for engineering materials.

Abstract:The self‐healing epoxy based on microencapsulated epoxy‐amine chemistry is a system with great potential for practical applications. Herein, microcapsules respectively containing epoxy and polyetheramine were fabricated using a microencapsulation technique via integrating electrospraying and interfacial polymerization (ES‐IP) and self‐healing epoxy based on the dual microcapsules were systematically investigated regarding the microcapsule dispersion, healing performance, failure mode, and mechanical properties. Microcapsules with different sizes were conveniently prepared by adjusting the injection rate. The microcapsules, regardless of the size, can be well dispersed in the epoxy matrix. The effects of the microcapsule size and concentration on the healing performance were studied. While full healing can be obtained for microcapsule >100 μm, high healing efficiency of about 90% and 70% can be achieved for microcapsules in 50 ~ 100 μm and ~ 50 μm, respectively. The healing performance decreases with the decreased microcapsule concentration. However, healing efficiency >70% can still be obtained when 5.0 wt% microcapsule of 50 ~ 100 μm were adopted. Mixed failure modes including adhesive failure, cohesive failure, and matrix failure, were observed, due to the good performance of the selected healant system. While the incorporated microcapsules, especially the small ones, evidently toughens the matrix, they deteriorate the tensile properties of the formulated self‐healing material.

Abstract:In this work, diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS) was used as a curing agent adsorbed at the periphery of single-layer microcapsules with Ag-80 as the healing agent within melamine-formaldehyde resin (MF). The double-layer microcapsules were made by encapsulating the particulates (the single-layer microcapsules decorated with DDS) with MF via in situ polymerization. These double-layer microcapsules simultaneously release healing agent and curing agent upon the fracture of the surrounding matrix, which increases the rate of contact between the two agents, and thus improves the healing efficiency. DDS adsorption plays an important role in the formation and final morphology of the double-layer microcapsules. When using a compound dispersant consisting of 30% Tween 80 and 70% Span 80, the particulates of dispersed DDS were homogeneous and fine. When the pH value was between 3.5 and 4.5, the dispersed DDS and MF (Ag-80) microcapsules had opposite surface charges, and tended to come together due to electrostatic interactions. The morphologies of the microcapsules were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The co-existence and stability of the healing agent and the curing agent before capsule failure were demonstrated by infrared spectrometry (FTIR). The mechanical properties of the double-layer microcapsules were investigated by nanoindentation. The results indicated that the microcapsules fractured earlier than the matrix to repair a crack, and the mechanical properties of the cured microcapsules were similar to those of the resin matrix.

Abstract:Two component self-healing microcapsules were prepared by in situ polymerization with poly (melamine-urea-formaldehyde) as wall, epoxy resin and latent curing agent sebacate hydrazide as core. The ratio of two core material and the reaction process were studied. The size and distribution of particle, surface morphology, structure, thermal properties and content of core were measured and characterized by using particle size analyzer（PSA）, optical microscopy (OM), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). The results showed that the microcapsules have smooth and compact surfaces, and have spherical profiles. The average diameter of microcapsules is 30μm and core content of microcapsules is 70%. The heat resistance and solvent resistance of microcapsule are better. The curing temperature is 190°Cand the healing efficiency can be improved.

Abstract:The collective emission from a one-dimensional chain of interacting two-level atoms is investigated. We calculate the light scattered by dissipative few-excitation eigenstates in the far field, and, in particular, focus on signatures of a lattice two-body bound state. We present analytical results for the angle-resolved, temporal decay of the scattered light intensity. Moreover, we find that the steady-state emission spectrum that emerges when the system is probed by a weak, incoherent driving field exhibits a distinct signature for the existence of a bound state, and allows us to determine the momentum distribution of the two-body relative wave function. Intriguingly, our study does not rely on single-atom addressability and/or manipulation techniques.

Abstract:In this study, we successfully manufactured polyurethane microcapsules containing isocyanate prepolymer as a core material for self-healing protection coatings via interfacial polymerization of a commercial polyurethane curing agent (Bayer L-75) and 1,4-butanediol (BDO) as a chain extender in an emulsion solution. With an optical microscope (OM) and a scanning electron microscope (SEM), the resulting microcapsules showed a spherical shape and an ideal structure with a smooth surface. Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR) showed that the core material was successfully encapsulated. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that the initial evaporation temperature of the microcapsules was 270 °C. In addition, we examined the influence of the concentration of the emulsifier and chain extender on the structure and morphology of the microcapsules. The results indicate that the optimal parameters of the microcapsule are an emulsifier concentration of 7.5% and a chain extender concentration of 15.38%. Microcapsules were added to the epoxy resin coating to verify the coating’s self-healing performance by a surface scratch test, and the results showed that the cracks could heal in 24 h. Furthermore, the self-healing coating had excellent corrosion resistance.

Abstract:Abstract The self-healing function of the polymer material has been realized by the microencapsulation technology of the healing agent. A novel microcapsule contained tris(dimethylaminomethyl)phenol (DMP-30) with polystyrene as shell material was prepared via solvent evaporation technique in a W/O/W emulsion. Two key strategies were implemented to prepare the microcapsules successfully. First, a small amount of deionized water was added into DMP-30 to form a complex, and a stable W/O emulsion was successfully prepared. The second one is to form a stable W/O/W emulsion system with the high viscosity aqueous solution added with Arabia gum and surfactants as the third phase. In addition, the influencing factors of microcapsules preparation were investigated systematically. The chemical structure of DMP-30 microcapsule was investigated by Fourier transform infrared. The morphology and shell thickness of the microcapsules were observed by optical microscope and scanning electron microscope. The reactivity of the core material was studied by differential scanning calorimetry. The thermal properties of microcapsules were studied by thermogravimetric analysis. The environmental resistance of microcapsules was verified by the isothermal aging test. Results showed that DMP-30 was successfully coated by polystyrene and the microcapsule size was in the range of 2–40 μm. The synthesized microcapsules were thermally stable below 50 °C.

Abstract:In this work, ethyl cellulose was used as a wall material, propanetriol as a core material, polyvinyl alcohol as a stabilizer and gelatin as an emulsifier. Self-healing microcapsules with a slow-release effect were prepared using the solvent evaporation method. Various analytical techniques, such as 3D confocal microscopy (LCSM), optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), thermal weight loss analysis (TGA), laser particle size tester and electrochemical impedance polarization, are utilized. The morphology, distribution, particle size, corrosion resistance and self-healing ability of the prepared microcapsules and resin-based coatings were characterized and analyzed. The results show that the cross-sectional core–shell structure is clearly seen in the LCSM, showing a smooth, hollow, spherical shape. OM and laser particle size testers have shown that the size of the microcapsules decreases over time. Also, in OM, the microcapsules are uniformly distributed in the emulsion with a smooth and non-adherent surface. In SEM, the microcapsule particle size is about 150 μm, the shell wall thickness is about 18 μm, and the hollow structure of ruptured microcapsules is obvious. FT-IR and TGA confirmed the successful encapsulation of the formulated microcapsules. The results show that when the core-wall mass ratio is 1.2:1 and the amount of microcapsule is 10% of the coating amount, the prepared microcapsule has high thermal stability and certain wear resistance. By electrochemical and immersion experiments, it was found that a 3.5 wt % NaCl solution has the best impedance, the lowest corrosion current density, and good adhesion and tensile toughness. The results showed that glycerol was successfully released from the broken microcapsules and self-healed, forming an anticorrosive coating with excellent corrosion resistance and self-healing ability.

Epoxy loaded poly(urea‐formaldehyde) microcapsules via in situ polymerization designated for self‐healing coatings

Abstract:<p>Self‐healing systems are a next‐generation technology that can offer autonomous crack repair and increase the service lifetime of a protective coating. Polymeric microcapsules containing healing agents can be used in that perspective and exhibit significant potential. In the current study, poly(urea‐formaldehyde) microcapsules containing an epoxy healing agent as core material were successfully prepared using in situ polymerization. The effect of different process parameters was studied in respect to microcapsules' characteristics, that is, morphology, particle size, encapsulation efficiency and thermal properties. Spherical microcapsules with either smooth or rough surface were obtained with a size ranging from 90 to 165 μm, controlled by the stirring rate during the emulsification stage. The encapsulation efficiency varied between 65–77% with no significant dependence on the process conditions. Finally, the stability of the microcapsules during storage was investigated at different conditions.</p>
