Abstract:Various preforms of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), such as fibers, yarns, or buckypapers (BP), have been developed over the last few years in order to fabricate advanced nanocomposites containing a high volume fraction of the reinforcing phase. However, a homogeneous dispersion and an even isolation of CNTs during the fabrication process of many preforms such as BP is often challenging, while the poor interaction between CNTs and the matrix also limits the final performance of the nanocomposites. Herein, a new route to overcome these two challenges simultaneously has been demonstrated based on an active dispersant (noted as Py-PEI) developed through the quaternization reaction of pyrene derivatives (Py-Br) and polyethylenimine (PEI). The existence of pyrene groups leads to the formation of pi-pi stacking with CNTs, successfully hindering the re-aggregation of dispersed CNTs. Meanwhile, the amine groups of Py-PEI can establish covalent bonds with epoxy, leading to an enhanced load transfer efficiency between CNTs and epoxy in the composites. Systematic characterization of both fabricated BP and BP-reinforced nanocomposites have been performed, with significantly enhanced CNT dispersion stability in water together with improved mechanical performance of the as-obtained BP/epoxy nanocomposites. This study provides a new strategy in fabricating high performance nanocomposites with the ease of nanofiller dispersion and enhanced reinforcing efficiency.

Abstract:Mechanical properties of carbon fiber (CF) reinforced epoxy composites enhanced with a small quantity of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were investigated. 1wt.% MWCNTs were well dispersed in the epoxy matrix and the CF prepregs were manufactured using fiber filament wind process. The hybrid MWCNT/CF/epoxy composites were fabricated by laying up of fiber prepregs. Tensile properties, interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and microstructures of the composites were investigated. The results show that the addition of MWCNTs into the composites improved the tensile properties and ILSS with much reduced dispersity. Enhancing mechanisms behind these were elucidated.

Abstract:This work describes the effects of tailoring the morphology of the re-agglomeration network and interfacial bonding by embedding poly(methyl methacrylate) decorated single wall nanotubes (SWNTs) into an epoxy resin. We report the time history of the re-agglomerations in the resin, and the rheological properties of the uncured suspensions to assess the effectiveness of the carbon nanotubes crosslinking on the curing process. A dispersion index was used to quantitatively evaluate the level of re-agglomeration. Both the pristine SWNTs and the polymer decorated SWNTs showed the effectiveness of re-agglomeration in improving rheological storage and loss modulus up to 770% and 50% respectively comparing with samples containing uniformly dispersed filler structure, suggested a novel filler arrangement for optimum composites damping performance. Dynamic mechanical analyser tests of the cured composites show that the re-agglomeration provides an increase of the energy dissipation capability when an appropriate interfacial bonding is in place. These results suggest that the morphology of re-agglomerates offers an effective interesting nano-reinforcement architecture for composites targeted at energy absorption and vibration damping.
Dispersant Selection for Nanomaterials: Insight into Dispersing Functionalized Carbon Nanotubes by Small Polar Aromatic Organic Molecules

Abstract:Dispersion remains a technical challenge for effective applications of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). We observed an interesting sorption phenomenon that measured sorption capacity of small and polar aromatic organic molecules (SPAOMs) by CNTs is up to 230 times higher than their theoretically calculated monolayer sorption capacity. Therefore, here we report the dispersion of CNTs using SPAOMs. The stability of CNTs suspension was enhanced by increasing equilibrium concentration of SPAOM, CNTs surface functionalization coverage and SPAOM water solubility. A nanoscaled sorption isotherm model was developed, showing a better performance than traditional bulkscaled model. More importantly, the new model is applicable to a wide range of organic compounds sorption on different nanomaterials. The dispersion parameter, m derived from the new model has a good linear relationship with the maximum available SPAOM–CNT contact area and SPAOM water solubility, respectively. Further, we successfully made CNT suspensions with different dispersibility by SPAOM according to the m value, indicating that m is an effective index representing the dispersibility of a compound. The reversible adsorption on CNT indicates SPAOM, as a new type of potential dispersant, is recyclable in CNT dispersion. Our study expands the knowledge on selecting of effective dispersants for nanomaterials and has great environmental significance.
Simultaneous use of physical and chemical dispersants for electrical conductivity enhancement in polyamide 6/carbon nanotube/conductive carbon black hybrid nanocomposites

Abstract:Polyamide 6 (PA6)/carbon nanotube (CNT)/conductive carbon black (CCB) nanocomposites with the incorporation of physical and chemical dispersants were prepared via melt blending method to examine the synergistic enhancement of electrical conductivity. Investigation of modified CNT with octadecyl triphenyl phosphonium chloride (OTPC-CNT) as physical dispersant was performed by Fourier transform infrared, nuclear magnetic resonance, Raman spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. Morphological, electrical, rheological, and mechanical properties of PA6/CNT/CCB nanocomposites were examined by field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, digital insulation tester, oscillatory shear rheometer, tensile test, and impact test. The results showed that by the incorporation of physical (OTPC) and chemical (RPS 1005) dispersants to a compound containing 2.5 wt.% CNT and 5 wt.% CCB, electrical conductivity was improved 9 orders of magnitude (S cm −1 ) compared to those of samples without any dispersants and 6 orders of magnitude compared to those of samples containing 2.5 wt.% CNT and physical dispersants. These results illustrate that by simultaneous incorporation of two different dispersants, it is possible to form a 3D conductive network in such nanocomposites and thus achieve a synergistic enhancement of electrical conductivity. The novelty of this study lies in the simultaneous incorporation of physical and chemical dispersants that lead to desired electrical conductivity without sacrificing mechanical properties besides economical advantage of production. This result is due to the remarkable effect of physical dispersants in improving electrical conductivity along with the low cost of chemical dispersants. GRAPHICAL

Abstract:The uniform dispersion of carbon nanotubes in epoxy resin is one of the key factors to achieve the composites with desirable mechanical and physical property enforcement. However, the widely used dispersion methods have their own respective limitations in pursuing satisfactory nanotube dispersion. Herein, a new dispersion approach, based on the synergetic effect of combining high speed internal mixing with running simultaneously continuous ultrasonication treatment, has been proposed. The dispersion of nanotubes was carried out in a high speed internal mixer, consisting of twin kneading block structured rotors and an integrated ultrasonic horn, which was intercalated into the central position between the twin rotors. At first, the FEM simulation was conducted to optimize the kneading element assembly and illuminate the geometry influence of the ultrasonic horn intercalation on the mixing flow. Afterwards, to confirm the feasibility of the approach, pristine MWCNTs (P‐CNTs), oxidation modified MWCNTs (M‐CNTs) and M‐CNTs/multilayer graphene nanoplatelets (MGPs) hybrid are dispersed into epoxy resin. The dispersion of each sample in its liquid epoxy state is investigated under transparent optical microscopy. More characterizations, including SEM, TG/DTA, tensile test, and thermal conductivity measurements, were conducted on the cured composites. Competitive reinforcements on mechanical tensile property and thermal conductivity were observed. Especially, at a 1.5 wt% M‐CNTs/MGPs hybrid content, the composite mechanical tensile strength and thermal conductivity were 47% and 30% higher than those of neat epoxy. This preliminary study demonstrates the feasibility and practicability of the proposed approach to achieving good MWCNTs dispersion and distribution in epoxy resin. POLYM. Improving the properties of poly(arylene ether nitrile) composites reinforced by covalently modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes

Abstract:To develop high-performance carbon nanotube (CNT)-based polymer nanocomposites, both the interface control and the dispersion of CNTs within the polymer hosts need to be considered. In this study, we show an effective way to modify the surface of multi-walled CNTs (MWCNTs) by applying a cyclization reaction between nitrile-modified MWCNTs and bis-phthalonitrile. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy were used to examine the structure and morphology of as-prepared functional CNTs. Phthalocyanines (Pcs) were found to be evenly coated on the surface of MWCNTs, resulting in good dispersion and strong interfacial adhesion between MWNCTs and the poly(arylene ether nitrile) (PEN) matrix. Compared with neat PEN, the tensile strength and tensile modulus of PEN nanocomposites with 2 wt% MWCNTs-Pc increased from 85.6 MPa to 108 MPa and from 2300 MPa to 3350 MPa, respectively. Furthermore, surface-functionalized CNTs can also form the physical MWCNT network within the PEN matrix, as confirmed by rheological and thermal stability tests. Additionally, a low rheological percolation threshold of 0.69 wt% was obtained, and the dielectric constant of PEN nanocomposites was increased from 3.3 for neat PEN to 16.6 with 5 wt% MWCNTs-Pc.
Unzipping Carbon Nanotube Bundles Through NH−π Stacking for Enhanced Electrical and Thermal Transport

Abstract:Bundling of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) significantly undermines their superior thermal and electrical properties. Realizing stable, homogeneous, and surfactant-free dispersion of SWCNTs in solvents and composites has long been regarded as a key challenge. Here, we report amine-containing aromatic and cyclohexane molecules, which are common chain extenders (CEs) for epoxy curing in industry, can be used to effectively disperse CNTs. We achieve single-tube-level dispersion of SWCNTs in CE solvents, as demonstrated by the strong chirality-dependent absorption and photoluminescence emission. The SWCNT-CE dispersion remains stable under ambient conditions for months. The excellent dispersibility and stability are attributed to the formation of an n-type charge-transfer complex through the NH-pi interaction between the amine group of CEs and the delocalized pi bond of SWCNTs, which is confirmed by the negative Seebeck coefficient of the CE-functionalized SWCNT films, the red shift of the G band in the Raman spectra, and the NH-pi peak in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The high dispersibility of CEs significantly improves the electrical and thermal transport of macroscale CNT assemblies. The sheet resistance of the CE-dispersed SWCNT thin films reaches 161 Omega sq(-1) at 80.8% optical transmittance after functional modification by HNO3. Moreover, the CEs cross-link CNTs and epoxy molecules, forming a pathway for phonon transport in CNT/epoxy nanocomposites. The thermal conductivity of the CE-CNT-epoxy composite is enhanced by 1850% compared with the original epoxy, which is the highest enhancement reported to date for CNT/epoxy nanocomposites. The CE-based NH-pi interaction provides a new paradigm for the effective and stable dispersion of SWCNTs in a facile and scalable process.
Ultrasonic Dispersion of Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Aided by Pyrene-Polyether Dispersants and Al 2 O 3 Particles

Abstract:Carbon nanotube (CNT) aqueous suspensions are attracting considerable attention in conductive, antistatic, electromagnetic shielding coatings and films owning to their environmental safety. However, stable CNT suspensions are difficult to prepare because of the remarkable entanglement between CNTs and their intrinsic hydrophobicity. A new class of amphiphilic dispersants—pyrene butyric acid polyethylene glycol monoester (Py-mPEG)—were prepared through the esterification reaction between 1-pyrene butyric acid and polyethylene glycol monomethyl ether. Varieties of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) aqueous suspensions were prepared by ultrasonic method using the following dispersants: Py-mPEG, sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS), Py-mPEG/Al2O3, and SDBS/Al2O3. The concentrations of suspended MWCNTs were determined by UV–vis absorption spectroscopy, and the state of suspensions was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The non-covalent interactions between MWCNTs and Py-mPEG were investigated by fluorescence emission spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations. The results showed that MWCNTs were more readily dispersed in Py-mPEG solutions than in SDBS solutions, whereas the Al2O3 particles could further improve the dispersion effect. Particularly, the MWCNT concentration reached 1.363 mg/mL using Py-mPEG (1000 ppm)/Al2O3 (particle size: 5–6 µm) as dispersant. A large number of individual MWCNTs were observed from the SEM images of the suspensions. A diffusion experiment on ink showed that the Al2O3 particles with particle size of 5–6 µm were highly responsive to ultrasound. The entangled MWCNTs could be disintegrated by the collision of particles.
Preparation of Carbon Nanotubes/waterborne Polyurethane Composites with the Emulsion Particles Assisted Dispersion of Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:A simple and effective emulsion method for the dispersion of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in waterborne polyurethane (WPU) is reported. WPU emulsions containing reactive CNTs are synthesized by in situ polymerization. During the emulsification process, a part of emulsion particles (EPs) grow and form at the reactive sites of CNTs. The CNT bundle can be separated by the growth and formation of EPs, forming individually suspended CNTs. With the aid of EPs, CNTs can be coated by EPs and easily dispersed in emulsions. After drying, CNTs are uniformly dispersed in the WPU matrix and a low percolation threshold is achieved at 0.132 vol.% CNT content. After addition of only 1, 2, and 3 wt.% CNTs, the tensile strength is greatly improved by about 128%, 179%, and 203% from 14.8 MPa of the pure WPU to 33.8, 41.3, and 44.8 MPa, respectively.
Synergistically Improving the Thermal Conductivity and Mechanical Strength of PEEK/MWCNT Nanocomposites by Functionalizing the Matrix with Fluorene Groups

Abstract:The introduction of the conjugated group bisphenol fluorene effectively improves the dispersion of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) in in situ polymerization and increases the interfacial bonding strength. The reduction of interfacial thermal resistance significantly enhances the thermal conductivity of the nanocomposite. Instead of pure resin, this copolymerized nanocomposite is used to prepare high thermal conductivity and high strength poly (ether ether ketone) (PEEK) composites. Nanofiller reinforcement is an effective method to prepare high thermally conductive polymer‐matrix composites. However, the poor dispersion of nanofillers and high interfacial thermal resistance between the filler and matrix seriously affect the thermal conductivity and mechanical properties of composites. To solve this problem, a small amount of conjugated fluorene group is introduced into the polymer chain of poly (ether ether ketone) (PEEK) to afford the fluorene‐functionalized copolymer matrix (FD‐PEEK). In an in situ polymerization procedure, the matrix non‐covalently binds to multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) to allow highly filled PEEK/MWCNT nanocomposites. With the filler dispersion and matrix–filler interfacial bonding improved, the prepared nanocomposites possess both high thermal conductivity and tensile strength. At the optimal ratio of 2 mol% fluorene groups in the polymer chain, the nanocomposite with 10 wt% MWCNT exhibits an excellent thermal conductivity of 2.41 W m−1 K−1, which is 868% higher than pristine PEEK, with tensile strength remaining 104.3 MPa. The PEEK/MWCNT nanocomposites can be further used as matrix resins to build double‐segregated network multi‐component composites, which contributes to an innovative strategy to design high‐performance thermally conductive materials.

Abstract:This work aims to investigate the performance of the epoxy resin modified by poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐poly(propylene glycol)‐b‐poly(ethylene glycol) (PEO‐PPO‐PEO) block copolymers and multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). It is detected that when PEO‐PPO‐PEO block copolymers and MWCNTs are simultaneously added, synergistic toughening effects for epoxy resin achieve without loss of other properties. Specifically, with the introduction of 5 wt% PEO‐PPO‐PEO block copolymers, the critical stress intensity factor (KIc) of the epoxy resin is increased by 65.7% in contrast with the pure epoxy resin by the reason of the epoxy matrix shear yielding triggered by cavitation of PEO‐PPO‐PEO nanophases and by 28.7% with the introduction of 0.25 wt% MWCNTs owing to the pull‐out and crack bridging of MWCNTs, but other properties are decreased. However, with the simultaneous introduction of 5 wt% PEO‐PPO‐PEO and 0.25 wt% MWCNTs, the KIc of epoxy resins is significantly increased by 97.3%, exhibiting much higher than the linear superposition of the corresponding epoxy resin/PEO‐PPO‐PEO and epoxy resin/MWCNTs composites. Meanwhile, the decrease in other properties is retarded. This is because PEO‐PPO‐PEO block copolymer can enhance the interactions between MWCNTs and epoxy resins in the epoxy resin/PEO‐PPO‐PEO/MWCNT composites, thereby promoting the dispersion of MWCNTs in the epoxy resins. Consequently, the fracture toughness of epoxy resins is efficiently boosted by the superposition of the pull‐out and crack bridging of well‐dispersed MWCNTs and the epoxy matrix shear yielding triggered by the strengthened interactions between PEO‐PPO‐PEO block copolymers and MWCNTs. This work supplies an easy and efficient means to solve the dispersion of nanoparticles, which can prominently advance the comprehensive properties of epoxy resins.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes thin films (CNTf) in polymers should demonstrate excellent mechanical, thermal and electrical properties. However, such anticipated properties are hardly possible due to a number of factors. For example, the weak bonding of CNTf with polymers at the interface which results in easy delamination and deteriorated properties of the CNTf/polymer composites. More still, the declined conductivity of composites highly contributed by the insulating polymers. Herein, an approach to solve the mentioned problems is reported which briefly involved first modifying the polymer (epoxy resin) with the CNT in controlled percentages, and then introducing the CNTf to the modified epoxy solution which synergistically created a new CNT-to-CNT interphase and interlocked interactions, hence, presenting enhanced peeling (74.38%) and tensile (164.76%) strength in modified composites as compared to the unmodified CNTf/epoxy composites. Moreover, the strain sensing, conductivity, and temperature responses of the composites were also significantly improved as required in various high-performance composites.

Abstract:A CO2-responsive dispersant, N,N-dimethyl-N'-(pyren-I-ylmethyl) acetimidamidinium (PyAH(+)), which bears both a pyrene moiety and an amidinium cation, has been successfully synthesized. Through strong pi-pi interaction between the pyrene moiety;and single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), we have demonstrated that PyH+ can be modified onto SWNT surfaces to promote the dispersion of SWNTs in water. Furthermore, taking advantage of gas triggered interconversions between the amidinium cation and amidine, reversible control on the solubility of SWNTs has been achieved simply through alternated bubbling of CO2 and Ar. This work has demonstrated a new method for controlled dispersion and aggregation of SWNTs, and it may contribute to the development of gas responsive carbon materials.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Recently, much work has focused on the efficient dispersion of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) throughout a polymer matrix for mechanical and/or electrical matrices. However, CNTs used as enhancement inclusions in a high-performance polymer matrix, especially in poly(aryl ether ketone) (PAEK), have rarely been reported. Therefore, multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT)-modified PAEK nanocomposites were synthesized by in situ polymerization of monomers of interest in the presence of pre-treated MWNTs. RESULTS: This process enabled a uniform dispersion of MWNT bundles in the polymer matrix. The resultant MWNT/PAEK nanocomposite films were optically transparent with significant mechanical enhancement at a very low MWNT loading (0.5 wt%). CONCLUSION: These MWNT/polymer nanocomposites are potentially useful in a variety of aerospace and terrestrial applications, due to the combination of excellent properties of MWNTs with PAEK. Abstract:This paper reviewed the recent advances in the electrical property of polymer/carbon nanotube(CNT) composites.CNTs could enhance polymer matrix's electrical property because of its high electrical conductivity.However,CNTs were extremely difficult to disperse in a polymer matrix and usually intend to agglomerate to form stabilized bundles.The main challenge in the preparation of CNT-reinforced composites was to find a way to make CNTs homogeneously dispersed in polymer matrix.So far,there were several methods for the dispersion of carbon nanobubes,such as solution mixing,in-situ polymerization,melt mixing and chemical functionalization of the carbon nanotubes,etc.Numerous studies showed that the percolation threshold and conductivity depend strongly on the polymer type and fabrication method,aspect ratio of CNTs,uniform spatial distribution of individual CNTs and degree of alignment.These influencing factors and preparation of high performance polymer/CNTs composites were described in this review.Moreover,both the current challenge and the future development towards the field of polymer/CNTs electrical conductive composites were also discussed in this article.
Improving comprehensive performance of copper matrix composite by spray pyrolysis fabricated CNT/W reinforcement

Abstract:<p>As a hybrid reinforcement, interconnected architecture of carbon nanotubes (CNT)/Tungsten (W) composite powder was designed and fabricated by spraying pyrolysis (SP) method. Subsequently, CNT-W/copper (Cu) composites were fabricated successfully by low energy ball milling (LEBM) and spark plasma sintering (SPS). The electronic conductivity, mechanical properties, micro-morphology and interface microstructure of CNT-W/Cu composites were evaluated and characterized. The results revealed that CNT with attached W were dispersed uniformly in the Cu matrix and W particles played a "pinning" role of the CNT. The 0.6 wt%CNT-W sample exhibited ultimate tensile strength 226 MPa and the elongation 33%, which were 14% and 83% higher than that of pure Cu, respectively. Besides, the 0.8 wt% CNT-W sample exhibited electrical conductivity 92.3%IACS, which is very close to that of Cu matrix (92.6%IACS). Finally, the strengthening and electric conductivity mechanisms of CNT-W in Cu matrix were considered. This study inspires a new way of synergistically reinforced metal matrix composites.</p>

Abstract:Efficient dispersion of nanoparticles (NPs) is a crucial challenge in the preparation and application of composites that contain NPs, particularly in coatings, inks, and related materials. Physical adsorption and chemical modification are the two common methods used to disperse NPs. However, the former suffers from desorption, and the latter is more specific and has limited versatility. To address these issues, we developed a novel photo-cross-linked polymeric dispersant, comb-shaped benzophenone-containing poly(ether amine) (bPEA), using a one-pot nucleophilic/cyclic-opening addition reaction. The results demonstrated that the bPEA dispersant forms a dense and stable shell on the surface of pigment NPs through physical adsorption and subsequent chemical photo-cross-linking, which effectively overcome the drawbacks of the desorption occurred in physical adsorption and the specificity of the chemical modification. By means of the dispersing effect of bPEA, the obtained pigment dispersions show high solvent, thermal, and pH stability without flocculation during storage. Moreover, the NPs dispersants show good compatibility with screen printing, coating, and 3D printing, endowing the ornamental products with high uniformity, color fastness, and less color shading. These properties make bPEA dispersants ideal candidates in fabrication dispersions of other NPs.
Effect of Dimensions and Agglomerations of Carbon Nanotubes on Synchronous Enhancement of Mechanical and Damping Properties of Epoxy Nanocomposites.

Abstract:In order to achieve simultaneous enhancement of mechanical and damping properties, epoxy resin nanocomposites reinforced with a series of carboxylic multi-walled carbon nanotubes (C-MWCNTs) with different dimensions were prepared. A solution-based high-speed shear dispersion method was developed. The dispersion mechanism of carbon nanotubes was studied, and the degree of dispersion difficulty of carbon nanotubes with different dimensions was evaluated by theoretical calculation, and the minimum size of agglomerates for dispersion based on the mechanism of rupture was deduced. Then, the effect of synchronous enhancement on the mechanical and damping properties was tested by experiment. The effects of dimensions and agglomerations on the tensile properties, damping properties, and glass transition temperature (T-g) of the nanocomposites were investigated. The ranking of dispersion difficulty was verified using the deviations between predicted and experimental tensile modulus. The experimental results showed that the effects of synchronous enhancement on the mechanical properties and damping capacity of two kinds of specimens were remarkable and the only drawback was that their T-g showed the maximum decrease. Further studies indicated that C-MWCNTs with large aspect ratios and large specific surface areas possessed better effects on synchronous enhancement, but caused a decrease in the glass transition temperature, while agglomeration had the opposite effect. The results of this work would be helpful for preparing improved structural damping integrated composites.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) reinforced polymer composites are highly desirable as ideal candidates of light-weighting structural and multifunctional materials due to their potential to combine the superior performance of individual constituents. However, the development of polymer/CNTs composites remains limited due to the long-standing issues on manufacturing challenge to achieve uniform dispersion of nanoscale filler, and the rapid ascent of the viscosity induced by the high-aspect-ratio CNTs. In this work, ionic liquid-like MWCNTs (MWCNTs-iL), which have high densities of covalently grafted organic moieties and keep liquid state at room temperature, are introduced into epoxy matrix. Since the compatibility of MWCNTs-iL and the epoxy matrix is efficiently improved, the epoxy/MWCNTs-iL composites exhibit homogeneous dispersion and 69.1% shear viscosity reduction compared to traditional epoxy/MWCNTs composites with 8 wt% loading of MWCNTs. MWCNTs-iL with stiff nanotube core and soft polyether shell play the simultaneous reinforcing and toughening roles in epoxy-based composites. Additionally, the influences of the MWCNTs defect concentration on the electrical and thermal conductive properties of epoxy-based composites as a function of filler contents are also investigated.
