Abstract: Let $f_\theta(z)=e^{2\pi i\theta}z+z^2$ be the quadratic polynomial having an indifferent fixed point at the origin. For any bounded type irrational number $\theta\in\mathbb{R}\setminus\mathbb{Q}$ and any rational number $\nu\in\mathbb{Q}$, we prove that $f_\theta$ and $f_\nu$ are conformally mateable, and that the mating is unique up to conjugacy by a M\"{o}bius map. This gives an affirmative (partial) answer to a question raised by Milnor in 2004. A crucial ingredient in the proof relies on an expansive property when iterating certain rational maps near Siegel disk boundaries. Combining this with the expanding property in repelling petals of parabolic points, we also prove that the Julia sets of a class of Siegel rational maps with parabolic points are locally connected.

Abstract:We prove that any degree $d$ rational map having a parabolic fixed point of multiplier $1$ with a fully invariant and simply connected immediate basin of attraction is mateable with the Hecke group $H_{d+1}$, with the mating realized by an algebraic correspondence. This solves the parabolic version of the Bullett-Freiberger Conjecture from 2003 on mateability between rational maps and Hecke groups. The proof is in two steps. The first is the construction of a pinched polynomial-like map which is a mating between a parabolic rational map and a parabolic circle map associated to the Hecke group. The second is lifting this pinched polynomial-like map to an algebraic correspondence via a suitable branched covering.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of n-mating in this work, which includes the classical mating of polynomials as a special case. The new notion brings further links between the polynomial world and the rational world than the classical one, as well as a natural classification of rational maps according to their n-unmatability. We classify the hyperbolic 2-matings according to the (non-)existence of orientation-reversing equators for them. For rational maps admitting orientation-reversing equators, we describe their dynamics via matings of half polynomials. There are diverse types of n-matings from the bicritical family and the degree-2 capture family exhibited in our explorations, which demonstrates the ubiquity of them. Finally we consider the postcritical realization programme of rational maps (among the atomic and mating family respectively). The compositive trick is exploited to deal with problems in the programme.

Abstract:We study critical orbits and bifurcations within the moduli space M-2 of quadratic rational maps, f : P-1 -> P-1. We focus on the family of curves, Per(1)(lambda) subset of M-2 for lambda is an element of C, defined by the condition that each f is an element of Per(1)(lambda) has a fixed point of multiplier lambda. We prove that the curve Per(1)(lambda) contains infinitely many postcritically finite maps if and only if lambda = 0, addressing a special case of Baker and DeMarco ('Special curves and postcritically finite polynomials', Forum of Math. Pi 1 (2013), doi: 10.1017/fmp.2013.2; Conjecture 1.4). We also show that the two critical points of f define distinct bifurcation measures along Per(1)(lambda).

Abstract:In this article we provide a combinatorial sufficient (and conjecturally, necessary) condition (called $\alpha$-symmetry) for the mating of two postcritically finite polynomials in $\mathcal{S}_1$ to be obstructed. To do this, we study the rotation sets associated to the parameter limbs in the connectedness locus of $\mathcal{S}_1$, which allows us to determine when there exist ray classes in the formal mating which contain a closed loop. We give a proof of the necessity of $\alpha$-symmetry for a particular subset of postcritically finite maps in $\mathcal{S}_1$. Many examples are given to illustrate the results of the paper.

Abstract:Let $f$ be a rational map with degree at least two. We prove that $f$ has at least $2$ disjoint and infinite critical orbits in the Julia set if it has a Herman ring. This result is sharp in the following sense: there exists a cubic rational map having exactly two critical grand orbits but also having a Herman ring. In particular, $f$ has no Herman rings if it has at most one infinite critical orbit in the Julia set. These criterions derive some known results about the rational maps without Herman rings.

Abstract:Mating is an operation to construct a rational map f from two polynomials, which are not in conjugate limbs of the Mandelbrot set. When the Thurston Algorithm for the unmodified formal mating is iterated in the case of postcritical identifications, it will diverge to the boundary of Teichmüller space, because marked points collide. Here it is shown that the colliding points converge to postcritical points of f , and the associated sequence of rational maps converges to f as well, unless the orbifold of f is of type (2, 2, 2, 2). So to compute f , it is not necessary to encode the topology of postcritical ray-equivalence classes for the modified mating, but it is enough to implement the pullback map for the formal mating. The proof combines the Selinger extension to augmented Teichmüller space with local estimates. Moreover, the Thurston Algorithm is implemented by pulling back a path in moduli space. This approach is due to Bartholdi--Nekrashevych in relation to one-dimensional moduli space maps, and to Buff--Chéritat for slow mating. Here it is shown that slow mating is equivalent to the Thurston Algorithm for the formal mating. An initialization of the path is obtained for repelling-preperiodic captures as well, which provide an alternative construction of matings.

Abstract:A completely stable multicurve of a post-critically finite rational map induces a combinatorial decomposition. The projections of the small Julia sets are immersed within the original Julia set. We prove that two small Julia sets are disjoint if and only if they are separated by a coiling curve. Furthermore, we prove that a post-critically finite rational map with a coiling curve is renormalizable. Using a similar argument, we give a sufficient condition for a Fatou domain to qualify as a Jordan domain. By tuning polynomails in such a Fatou domain, we provide examples of post-critically finite rational maps with coiling curves.

Abstract:The Medusa algorithm takes as input two postcritically finite quadratic polynomials and outputs the quadratic rational map which is the mating of the two polynomials (if it exists). Specifically, the output is a sequence of approximations for the parameters of the rational map, as well as an image of its Julia set. Whether these approximations converge is answered using Thurston's topological characterization of rational maps. This algorithm was designed by John Hamal Hubbard, and implemented in 1998 by Christian Henriksen and REU students David Farris, and Kuon Ju Liu. In this paper we describe the algorithm and its implementation, discuss some output from the program (including many pictures) and related questions. Specifically, we include images and a discussion for some shared matings, Lattes examples, and tuning sequences of matings.

Abstract:We construct families of rational functions $f: \mathbb{P}^1_k \rightarrow \mathbb{P}^1_k$ of degree $d \geq 2$ over a perfect field $k$ with non-martingale fixed-point processes. Then for any normal variety $X$ over $\mathbb{P}_{\bar{k}}^N$, we give conditions on $f: X \rightarrow X$ to guarantee that the associated fixed-point process is a martingale. This work extends the previous work of Bridy, Jones, Kelsey, and Lodge on martingale conditions and answers their question on the existence of a non-martingale fixed-point process associated with the iterated monodromy group of a rational function.

Abstract:Let $J$ be a simple closed curve in $\mathbb R^{k}$ $(k\geq2)$ that is differentiable with non-zero derivative at a point $A_0\in J$. For a tuple of positive reals $a_1,\cdots,a_n$ $(n\geq3)$, each of which is less than the sum of the others, we show that there exists a polygon $Q_n$ inscribed in $J$ with sides of lengths proportional to $(a_1,\cdots,a_n)$. As a consequence, we prove the existence of triangle inscribed in $J$ similar to any given triangle.

Abstract:Every expanding Thurston map $f$ without periodic critical points is known to have an iterate $f^n$ which is the topological mating of two polynomials. This has been examined by Kameyama and Meyer; the latter who has offered an explicit construction for finding two polynomials in the unmating of the iterate. Initializing this algorithm depends on an invariant Jordan curve through the postcritical set of $f$--but we propose adjustments to this unmating algorithm for the case where there exists a curve which is fully $f$-invariant up to homotopy and not necessarily simple. When $f$ is a critically pre-periodic expanding Thurston map, extending the algorithm to accommodate non-Jordan curves in this manner allows us to unmate without iterates.

On the set of stable primes for postcritically infinite maps over number fields

Abstract:Many interesting questions in arithmetic dynamics revolve, in one way or another, around the (local and/or global) reducibility behavior of iterates of a polynomial. We show that for very general families of integer polynomials $f$ (and, more generally, rational functions over number fields), the set of stable primes, i.e., primes modulo which all iterates of $f$ are irreducible, is a density zero set. Compared to previous results, our families cover a much wider ground, and in particular apply to $100\%$ of polynomials of any given odd degree, thus adding evidence to the conjecture that polynomials with a "large" set of stable primes are necessarily of a very specific shape, and in particular are necessarily postcritically finite.
