Abstract: Let $f_\theta(z)=e^{2\pi i\theta}z+z^2$ be the quadratic polynomial having an indifferent fixed point at the origin. For any bounded type irrational number $\theta\in\mathbb{R}\setminus\mathbb{Q}$ and any rational number $\nu\in\mathbb{Q}$, we prove that $f_\theta$ and $f_\nu$ are conformally mateable, and that the mating is unique up to conjugacy by a M\"{o}bius map. This gives an affirmative (partial) answer to a question raised by Milnor in 2004. A crucial ingredient in the proof relies on an expansive property when iterating certain rational maps near Siegel disk boundaries. Combining this with the expanding property in repelling petals of parabolic points, we also prove that the Julia sets of a class of Siegel rational maps with parabolic points are locally connected.

Abstract:Mating is an operation to construct a rational map f from two polynomials, which are not in conjugate limbs of the Mandelbrot set. When the Thurston Algorithm for the unmodified formal mating is iterated in the case of postcritical identifications, it will diverge to the boundary of Teichmüller space, because marked points collide. Here it is shown that the colliding points converge to postcritical points of f , and the associated sequence of rational maps converges to f as well, unless the orbifold of f is of type (2, 2, 2, 2). So to compute f , it is not necessary to encode the topology of postcritical ray-equivalence classes for the modified mating, but it is enough to implement the pullback map for the formal mating. The proof combines the Selinger extension to augmented Teichmüller space with local estimates. Moreover, the Thurston Algorithm is implemented by pulling back a path in moduli space. This approach is due to Bartholdi--Nekrashevych in relation to one-dimensional moduli space maps, and to Buff--Chéritat for slow mating. Here it is shown that slow mating is equivalent to the Thurston Algorithm for the formal mating. An initialization of the path is obtained for repelling-preperiodic captures as well, which provide an alternative construction of matings.

On quadratic Siegel disks with a class of unbounded type rotation numbers

Abstract:In this paper we explore a class of quadratic polynomials having Siegel disks with unbounded type rotation numbers. We prove that any boundary point of Siegel disks of these polynomials is a Lebesgue density point of their filled-in Julia sets, which generalizes the corresponding result of McMullen for bounded type rotation numbers. As an application, this result can help us construct more quadratic Julia sets with positive area. Moreover, we also explore the canonical candidate model for quasiconformal surgery of quadratic polynomials with Siegel disks. We prove that for any irrational rotation number, any boundary point of ``Siegel disk'' of the canonical candidate model is a Lebesgue density point of its ``filled-in Julia set'', in particular the critical point $1$ is a measurable deep point of the ``filled-in Julia set''.

Abstract:In this article we provide a combinatorial sufficient (and conjecturally, necessary) condition (called $\alpha$-symmetry) for the mating of two postcritically finite polynomials in $\mathcal{S}_1$ to be obstructed. To do this, we study the rotation sets associated to the parameter limbs in the connectedness locus of $\mathcal{S}_1$, which allows us to determine when there exist ray classes in the formal mating which contain a closed loop. We give a proof of the necessity of $\alpha$-symmetry for a particular subset of postcritically finite maps in $\mathcal{S}_1$. Many examples are given to illustrate the results of the paper.

Abstract:Under conjugation by affine transformations, the dynamical moduli space of cubic polynomials $f$ with a $2$-cycle of Siegel disks is parameterized by a three-punctured complex plane as a degree-$2$ cover. Assuming the rotation number of $f^2$ on the Siegel disk is of bounded type, we show that on the three-punctured complex plane, the locus of the cubic polynomials with both finite critical points on the boundaries of the Siegel disks on the $2$-cycle is comprised of two arcs, corresponding to the cases with two critical points on the boundary of the same Siegel disk, and a Jordan curve, corresponding to the cases with two critical points on the boundaries of different Siegel disks.

Abstract:We prove that if $F$ is a degree $3$ Thurston map with two fixed critical points, then any irreducible obstruction for $F$ contains a Levy cycle. As a corollary, it will be shown that if $f$ and $g$ are two postcritically finite cubic polynomials each having a fixed critical point, then any obstruction to the mating $f \mate g$ contains a Levy cycle. We end with an appendix to show examples of the obstructions described in the paper.

Abstract:We prove that if two non-renormalizable cubic Siegel polynomials with bounded type rotation numbers are combinatorially equivalent, then they are also conformally equivalent. As a consequence, we show that in the one-parameter slice of cubic Siegel polynomials considered by Zakeri [Za2], the locus of non-renormalizable maps is homeomorphic to a double-copy of a quadratic Siegel filled Julia set (minus the Siegel disk) glued along the Siegel boundary. This verifies the the conjecture of Blokh-Oversteegen-Ptacek-Timorin [BlOvPtTi] for bounded type rotation numbers.

Abstract:The control of postcritical sets of quadratic polynomials with a neutral fixed point is a main ingredient in the remarkable work of Buff and Chéritat to construct quadratic Julia sets with positive area. Based on the Inou-Shishikura theory, they obtained the control for the case of rotation numbers of bounded high type. Later, Cheraghi developed several elaborate analytic techniques based on Inou-Shishikura's results and obtained the control for the case of rotation numbers of high type. In this paper, based on the pseudo-Siegel disk theory of Dudko and Lyubich, we obtained the control for the general case.

Abstract:We extend Thurston's combinatorial criterion for postcritically finite rational maps to a class of rational maps with bounded type Siegel disks. The combinatorial characterization of this class of Siegel rational maps plays a special role in the study of general Siegel rational maps. As one of the applications, we prove that for any quadratic rational map with a bounded type Siegel disk, the boundary of the Siegel disk is a quasi-circle which passes through one or both of the critical points.

Abstract:We prove that cubic polynomial maps with a fixed Siegel disk and a critical orbit eventually landing inside that Siegel disk lie in the support of the bifurcation measure. This answers a question of Dujardin in positive. Our result implies the existence of holomorphic disks in the support of the bifurcation measure, and also implies that the set of rigid parameters is not closed in the moduli space of cubic polynomials.

Abstract:In the famous work by Buff and Chéritat constructing quadratic Julia sets with positive area, the control of the shape of perturbed Siegel disks is a key technique. To do it, Buff and Chéritat added a restrictive condition on rotation numbers. In this paper, we show that this restrictive condition is not necessary. As a consequence, more quadratic Julia sets with positive area can be constructed.

Abstract:Consider groups such as Mordell-Weil groups of abelian varieties over number fields, odd algebraic $K$-theory groups of number fields, or finitely generated subgroups of the multiplicative groups of number fields. They are all equipped with systems of reduction maps; thus, one can investigate the Hasse-Minkowski theorem for quadratic forms with coefficients in such groups. In this paper, we prove that the theorem holds for the forms whose rank equals $2$ or $3$, and we demonstrate that it does not hold for higher ranks by providing a counterexample. We also show that our results constitute a generalization of the classic Hasse-Minkowski theorem for binary and ternary integral forms.
