Abstract:In this paper we study the singularity manifolds of multidimensional strictly dispersing billiards and show that the proof of the Fundamental theorem for dispersing billiards remain valid for a dense set of finitely smooth scatterers.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the growth of fundamental groups of Finsler manifolds. Some relationships between the growth of fundamental groups and the volume growth of universal covers of Finsler manifolds are found. Some estimates of entropies and the number of generators of fundamental groups of Finsler manifolds are given. Moreover, the quasi-isometry and the geometric norm in Finsler geometry are considered.

Abstract:This paper contains several results concerning circle action on almost-complex and smooth manifolds. More precisely, we show that, for an almost-complex manifold $M^{2mn}$(resp. a smooth manifold $N^{4mn}$), if there exists a partition $\lambda=(\lambda_{1},...,\lambda_{u})$ of weight $m$ such that the Chern number $(c_{\lambda_{1}}... c_{\lambda_{u}})^{n}[M]$ (resp. Pontrjagin number $(p_{\lambda_{1}}... p_{\lambda_{u}})^{n}[N]$) is nonzero, then \emph{any} circle action on $M^{2mn}$ (resp. $N^{4mn}$) has at least $n+1$ fixed points. When an even-dimensional smooth manifold $N^{2n}$ admits a semi-free action with isolated fixed points, we show that $N^{2n}$ bounds, which generalizes a well-known fact in the free case. We also provide a topological obstruction, in terms of the first Chern class, to the existence of semi-free circle action with \emph{nonempty} isolated fixed points on almost-complex manifolds. The main ingredients of our proofs are Bott's residue formula and rigidity theorem.

Abstract:We prove Poisson limit laws for open billiards where the holes are on the boundaries of billiard tables (rather than some abstract holes in the phase space of a billiard). Such holes are of the main interest for billiard systems, especially for applications. Sinai billiards with or without a finite horizon, diamond billiards, and semi-dispersing billiards, as well as focusing billiards with slow decay of correlations, are considered.

Abstract:We obtain a generic regularity result for stationary integral $n$-varifolds assumed to have only strongly isolated singularities inside $N$-dimensional Riemannian manifolds, without any restriction on the dimension ($n\geq 2$) and codimension. As a special case, we prove that for any $n\geq 2$ and any compact $(n+1)$-dimensional manifold $M$ the following holds: for a generic choice of the background metric $g$ all stationary integral $n$-varifolds in $(M,g)$ will either be entirely smooth or have at least one singular point that is not strongly isolated. In other words, for a generic metric only "more complicated" singularities may possibly persist. This implies, for instance, a generic finiteness result for the class of all closed minimal hypersurfaces of area at most $4\pi^2-\varepsilon$ (for any $\varepsilon>0$) in nearly round four-spheres: we can thus give precise answers, in the negative, to the questions of persistence of the Clifford football and of Hsiang's hyperspheres in nearly-round metrics. The aforementioned main regularity result is achieved as a consequence of the fine analysis of the Fredholm index of the Jacobi operator for such varifolds: we prove on the one hand an exact formula relating that number to the Morse indices of the conical links at the singular points, while on the other hand we show that such an index is non-negative for all such varifolds if the ambient metric is generic.

Abstract:For hyperbolic systems with singularities, such as dispersing billiards, Pesin theory as developed by Katok and Strelcyn applies to measures that are "adapted" in the sense that they do not give too much weight to neighborhoods of the singularity set. The zero-entropy measures supported on grazing periodic orbits are nonadapted, but it has been an open question whether there are nonadapted measures with positive entropy. We construct such measures for any dispersing billiard with a periodic orbit having a single grazing collision; we then use our construction to show that the thermodynamic formalism for such billiards has a phase transition even when one restricts attention to adapted or to positive entropy measures.

Abstract:We study billiards in domains enclosed by circular polygons. These are closed strictly convex curves formed by finitely many circular arcs. We prove the existence of a set in phase space, corresponding to generic sliding trajectories close enough to the boundary of the domain, in which the return billiard dynamics is semiconjugate to a transitive subshift on infinitely many symbols that contains the full N -shift as a topological factor for any , so it has infinite topological entropy. We prove the existence of uncountably many asymptotic generic sliding trajectories approaching the boundary with optimal uniform linear speed, give an explicit exponentially big (in q ) lower bound on the number of q -periodic trajectories as , and present an unusual property of the length spectrum. Our proofs are entirely analytical.

Abstract:Morales, Pacifico and Pujals proved recently that every robustly transitive singular set for a 3-dimensional flow must be partially hyperbolic. In this paper we generalize the result to higher dimensions. By definition, an isolated invariant set A of a C-1 vector field S is called robustly transitive if there exist an isolating neighborhood U of A in M and a C-1 neighborhood U of S in chi(1) (M) such that for every X is an element of U, the maximal invariant set of X in U is non-trivially transitive. Such a set A is called singular if it contains a singularity. The set A is called strongly homogeneous of index i, if there exist an isolating neighborhood U of A in M and a C-1 neighborhood U of S in chi(1) (M) such that all periodic orbits of all X is an element of U contained in U have the same index i. We prove in this paper that any robustly transitive singular set that is strongly homogeneous must be partially hyperbolic, as long as the indices of singularities and periodic orbits fit in certain way. As corollaries we obtain that every robust singular attractor (or repeller) that is strongly homogeneous must be partially hyperbolic and, if dim M <= 4, every robustly transitive singular set that is strongly homogeneous must be partially hyperbolic. The main novelty of the proofs in this paper is an extension of the usual linear Poincare flow "to singularities".

Abstract:We investigate chaotic scattering on an attractive step potential with a quadrupolar deformation. The phase space features of the bound billiard are studied by using the notion of symmetry lines to find periodic orbits. We show that the scattering dynamics is intimately linked to structures in the bound billiard (infinite potential wall) phase space. The existence of preferred scattering directions is shown to be a consequence of large scale features of the phase space such as the period-two orbits. Self-similarity in the scattering functions is directly linked to unstable periodic orbits of the bound phase space. The main observations and methodology are applicable to concave billiards in general.
Singular sets on spaces with integral curvature bounds and diffeomorphism finiteness for manifolds

Abstract:In this paper, we are concerned with noncollapsed Riemannian manifolds $(M^{n},g)$ with integral curvature bounds, as well as their Gromov-Hausdorff limits $(M^{n}_{i},g_{i})\xrightarrow{GH}(X,d)$. Our main result generalizes Cheeger's Hausdorff dimension estimate for the singular set in [7] and improve it into Minkowski dimension estimate in the spirit of Cheeger-Naber [12]. We also prove a difffeomorphism finiteness theorem for manifolds in the critical case, using Cheeger-Naber's methods in [13].

Random Combinatorial Billiards and Stoned Exclusion Processes

Abstract:We introduce and study several random combinatorial billiard trajectories. Such a system, which depends on a fixed parameter $p\in(0,1)$, models a beam of light that travels in a Euclidean space, occasionally randomly reflecting off of a hyperplane in the Coxeter arrangement of an affine Weyl group with some probability that depends on the side of the hyperplane that it hits. In one case, we (essentially) recover Lam's reduced random walk in the limit as $p$ tends to $0$. The investigation of our random billiard trajectories relies on an analysis of new finite Markov chains that we call stoned exclusion processes. These processes have remarkable stationary distributions determined by well-studied polynomials such as ASEP polynomials, inhomogeneous TASEP polynomials, and open boundary ASEP polynomials; in many cases, it was previously not known how to construct Markov chains with these stationary distributions. Using multiline queues, we analyze correlations in the stoned multispecies TASEP, allowing us to determine limit directions for reduced random billiard trajectories and limit shapes for new random growth processes for $n$-core partitions. Our perspective coming from combinatorial billiards naturally leads us to formulate a new variant of the ASEP on $\mathbb{Z}$ called the scan ASEP, which we deem interesting in its own right.

Singularities Almost Always Scatter: Regularity Results for Non-scattering Inhomogeneities

Abstract:In this paper we examine necessary conditions for an inhomogeneity to be non-scattering, or equivalently, by negation, sufficient conditions for it to be scattering. These conditions are formulated in terms of the regularity of the boundary of the inhomogeneity. We examine broad classes of incident waves in both two and three dimensions. Our analysis is greatly influenced by the analysis carried out by Williams [28] in order to establish that a domain, which does not possess the Pompeiu Property, has a real analytic boundary. That analysis, as well as ours, relies crucially on classical free boundary regularity results due to Kinderlehrer and Nirenberg [18], and Caffarelli [6].

Maximal Codimension Collisions and Invariant Measures for Hard Spheres on a Line

Abstract:For any $N\geq 3$, we study invariant measures of the dynamics of $N$ hard spheres whose centres are constrained to lie on a line. In particular, we study the invariant submanifold $\mathcal{M}$ of the tangent bundle of the hard sphere billiard table comprising initial data that lead to the simultaneous collision of all $N$ hard spheres. Firstly, we obtain a characterisation of those continuously-differentiable $N$-body scattering maps which generate a billiard dynamics on $\mathcal{M}$ admitting a canonical weighted Hausdorff measure on $\mathcal{M}$ (that we term the Liouville measure on $\mathcal{M}$) as an invariant measure. We do this by deriving a second boundary-value problem for a fully nonlinear PDE that all such scattering maps satisfy by necessity. Secondly, by solving a family of functional equations, we find sufficient conditions on measures which are absolutely continuous with respect to the Hausdorff measure in order that they be invariant for billiard flows that conserve momentum and energy. Finally, we show that the unique momentum- and energy-conserving linear $N$-body scattering map yields a billiard dynamics which admits the Liouville measure on $\mathcal{M}$ as an invariant measure.

Singularity of the Spectrum for Smooth Area-Preserving Flows in Genus Two and Translation Surfaces Well Approximated by Cylinders

Abstract:We consider smooth flows preserving a smooth invariant measure, or, equivalently, locally Hamiltonian flows on compact orientable surfaces and show that, when the genus of the surface is two, almost every such locally Hamiltonian flow with two non-degenerate isomorphic saddles has singular spectrum. More in general, singularity of the spectrum holds for special flows over a full measure set of interval exchange transformations with a hyperelliptic permutation (of any number of exchanged intervals), under a roof with symmetric logarithmic singularities. The result is proved using a criterion for singularity based on tightness of Birkhoff sums with exponential tails decay. A key ingredient in the proof, which is of independent interest, is a result on translation surfaces well approximated by single cylinders. We show that for almost every translation surface in any connected component of any stratum there exists a full measure set of directions which can be well approximated by a single cylinder of area arbitrarily close to one. The result, in the special case of the stratum H ( 1 , 1 ) , yields rigidity sets needed for the singularity result.
Structural stability of attractor-repellor endomorphisms with singularities

Abstract:We prove a theorem on structural stability of smooth attractor-repellor endomorphisms of compact manifolds, with singularities. By attractor-repellor, we mean that the non-wandering set of the dynamics $f$ is the disjoint union of a repulsive compact subset with a hyperbolic attractor on which $f$ acts bijectively. The statement of this result is both infinitesimal and dynamical. Up to our knowledge, this is the first in this hybrid direction. Our results generalize also a Mather's theorem in singularity theory which states that infinitesimal stability implies structural stability for composed mappings, to the larger category of laminations.
