Abstract:Mathematical billiards is much like the real game: a point mass, representing the ball, rolls in a straight line on a (perfectly friction-less) table, striking the sides according to the law of reflection. A billiard trajectory is then completely characterised by the number of elastic collisions. The rules of mathematical billiards may be simple, but the possible behaviours of billiard trajectories are endless. In fact, several fundamental theory questions in mathematics can be recast as billiards problems. A billiard trajectory is called a periodic orbit if the number of distinct collisions in the trajectory is finite. We classify all possible periodic orbits on square and rectangular tables. We show that periodic orbits on such billiard tables cannot have an odd number of distinct collisions. We also present a connection between the number of different classes of periodic orbits and Euler's totient function, which for any integer $N$ counts how many integers smaller than $N$ share no common divisor with $N$ other than $1$. We explore how to construct periodic orbits with a prescribed (even) number of distinct collisions, and investigate properties of inadmissible (singular) trajectories, which are trajectories that eventually terminate at a vertex (a table corner).

The counter-examples are polygons admitting a 2-parameters family of -periodic orbits, with being either 3 or any even integer greater than 4.

Abstract:We introduce a new class of billiard-like system, ``bouncing outer billiards" which are 3-dimensional cousins of outer billiards of Neumann and Moser. We prove that bouncing outer billiard on a smooth convex body has at least four 1-parameter families of fixed points. We also fully describe dynamics of bouncing outer billiard on a line segment. Finally we carry out numerical experiments suggesting very complicated (non-ergodic) behavior for several shapes including the square and an ellipse.

Abstract:The survey is devoted to the class of integrable Hamiltonian systems and the class of integrable billiard systems and to the recent results of the authors and their students on the problem of comparison of these classes from the point of view of leafwise homeomorphy of their Liouville foliations. The key tool here are billiards on piecewise planar CW-complexes - topological billiards and billiard books - introduced by Vedyushkina. A construction of the class of evolutionary (force) billiards, introduced recently by Fomenko, is presented, enabling one to model a system in several non-singular energy ranges by a single billiard system, and the use of this class for geodesic flows on two-dimensional surfaces and some systems in mechanics is demonstrated. Some other integrable generalizations of classical billiard systems, including billiards with potentials, billiards in magnetic fields, and billiards with slipping, are discussed. Billiard books with Hooke potentials glued of planar confocal or circular tables, model four-dimensional semilocal singularities of Liouville foliations for integrable systems that contain non-degenerate equilibria. Considering the intersections of several confocal quadrics in results in a generalization of the Jacobi-Chasles theorem. Bibliography: 144 titles.

Abstract:A systematic numerical technique for the calculation of unstable periodic orbits in the stadium billiard is presented. All the periodic orbits up to order $p=11$ are calculated and then used to calculate the average Lyapunov exponent and the topological entropy. Applications to semiclassical quantization and to experiments in mesoscopic systems and microwave cavities are noted.

Abstract:We define a new class of plane billiards - the `pensive billiard' - in which the billiard ball travels along the boundary for some distance depending on the incidence angle before reflecting, while preserving the billiard rule of equality of the angles of incidence and reflection. This generalizes so called `puck billiards' proposed by M.Bialy, as well as a `vortex billiard', i.e. the motion of a point vortex dipole in 2D hydrodynamics on domains with boundary. We prove the variational origin and invariance of a symplectic structure for pensive billiards, as well as study their properties including conditions for a twist map, the existence of periodic orbits, etc. We also demonstrate the appearance of both the golden and silver ratios in the corresponding hydrodynamical vortex setting. Finally, we introduce and describe basic properties of pensive outer billiards.

Abstract:In this text we study billiards on ovals and investigate some consequences of a rotational symmetry of the boundary on the dynamics. As it simplifies some calculations, the symmetry helps to obtain the results. We focus on periodic orbits with the same symmetry of the boundary which always exist and prove that in general half of them are elliptic and Moser stable and the other half are hyperbolic with homo(hetero)clinic intersections.

Abstract:We study a particle moving at unit speed in a self-similar Lorentz billiard channel; the latter consists of an infinite sequence of cells which are identical in shape but growing exponentially in size, from left to right. We present numerical computation of the drift term in this system and establish the logarithmic periodicity of the corrections to the average drift.

Abstract:Classical billiards constitute an important class of dynamical systems. They have not only been in used in mathematical disciplines such as ergodic theory, but their properties demonstrate fundamental physical phenomena that can be observed in laboratory settings. This document provides instructions for a Matlab module that simulates classical billiard systems. It is intended to be used as both a research and teaching tool. At present, the program efficiently simulates tables that are constructed entirely from line segments and elliptical arcs. It functions less reliably for tables with more complex boundary components. Abstract:Euclidean outer billiard on a regular polygon (that is not a triangle, square or a hexagon) has aperiodic points, i.e., points where all iterates of the outer billiard map are defined and yield pairwise distinct images. This result answers a question of R. Schwartz posed at ICM 2022.

Abstract:We prove Poisson limit laws for open billiard systems with holes in the boundary of billiard tables. Traditionally some abstract holes in the phase space of a billiard were studied. Holes in the boundary are of an intrinsic interest for billiard systems, especially for applications. Sinai billiards with or without a finite horizon, diamond billiards, and semi-dispersing billiards are considered. However, the emphasis is on focusing billiards with slow decay of correlations, where various new technical difficulties arise.

Abstract:We construct a class of reflection laws for billiard processes in the unit interval whose stationary distribution for the billiard position and its velocity is the product of the uniform distribution and the standard normal distribution. These billiard processes have Markovian reflection laws, meaning their velocity is constant between reflections but changes in a Markovian way at reflection times.

Abstract:We consider a billiard problem for compact domains bounded by confocal conics on a hyperboloid of one sheet in the Minkowski space. We show that there are two types of confocal families in such setting. Using an algebro-geometric integration technique, we prove that the billiard within generalized ellipses of each type is integrable in the sense of Liouville. Further, we prove a generalization of the Poncelet theorem and derive Cayley-type conditions for periodic trajectories and explore geometric consequences.

On the complexity of polygonal billiards

Abstract:We show that the complexity of the billiard in a typical polygon grows cubically and the number of saddle connections grows quadratically along certain subsequences. It is known that the set of points whose first n-bounces hits the same sequence of sides as the orbit of an aperiodic phase point z converges to z. We establishe a polynomial lower bound estimate on this convergence rate for almost every z. This yields an upper bound on the upper metric complexity and upper slow entropy of polygonal billiards. We also prove significant deviations from the expected convergence behavior. Finally we extend these results to higher dimensions as well as to arbitrary invariant measures.

A new perspective of arithmetic billiards

Abstract:We study the problem of arithmetic billiards from a new perspective. We first raise a similar problem about reflecting lights inside grids, and give two solutions to this problem. Next, we consider a similar problem in plane grids and give its solution. Moreover, we extend this two problems to $p$-dimensional space, where $p\geq2$. In this process, we introduce two mappings about finite discrete sets, and get two finite abelian groups. In addition, we give the definition of circular sequences and consider some combinatorial properties of circular sequences.

Abstract:We study billiards in domains enclosed by circular polygons. These are closed strictly convex curves formed by finitely many circular arcs. We prove the existence of a set in phase space, corresponding to generic sliding trajectories close enough to the boundary of the domain, in which the return billiard dynamics is semiconjugate to a transitive subshift on infinitely many symbols that contains the full N -shift as a topological factor for any , so it has infinite topological entropy. We prove the existence of uncountably many asymptotic generic sliding trajectories approaching the boundary with optimal uniform linear speed, give an explicit exponentially big (in q ) lower bound on the number of q -periodic trajectories as , and present an unusual property of the length spectrum. Our proofs are entirely analytical.

Magic Billiards: the Case of Elliptical Boundaries

Abstract:In this work, we introduce a novel concept of magic billiard games and analyse their properties in the case of elliptical boundaries. We provide explicit conditions for periodicity in algebro-geometric, analytic, and polynomial forms. A topological description of those billiards is given using Fomenko graphs.

Abstract:We consider a billiard in the plane with periodic configuration of convex scatterers. This system is recurrent, in the sense that almost every orbit comes back arbitrarily close to the initial point. In this paper we study the time needed to get back in an r-ball about the initial point, in the phase space and also for the position, in the limit when r->0. We establish the existence of an almost sure convergence rate, and prove a convergence in distribution for the rescaled return times.
