Abstract:We provide a new tool to interpret the large scale structure of the Universe. As suggested in Paper II, energy density filaments could have been produced by subjacent magnetic flux tubes when the Universe was dominated by radiation. In more recent time epochs, small scale filaments have evolved in a complicated way, but large scale filaments have probably survived and should be identified with present observed matter filaments of clusters. A primordial magnetic field lattice made up of magnetic flux tubes would then have originated a matter lattice made up of cluster filaments. Taking into account some restrictions in the magnetic field configuration we speculate what type of matter network this would have generated. The simplest lattice is made up of octohedra connected at their vertexes, reminding us of a structure of superimposed egg cartons. The vertexes would correspond to large superclusters, which would therefore have eight filaments emerging from them. Some observational evidence is found in the Local Supercluster, which is spider-like, with eight legs.

Abstract:$^3$He spin-dependent structure functions, $g^3_1(x)$ and $g^3_2(x)$, which parametrize the hadronic tensor in polarized deep-inelastic scattering, were evaluated within the Poincaré covariant light-front framework. The Bakamjian-Thomas construction of the Poincaré generators allows us to make use of a realistic $^3$He wave function, obtained from refined nuclear phenomenological potentials. The same approach was already successfully applied to the $^3$He and $^4$He unpolarized deep-inelastic scattering. To investigate the neutron polarized structure functions, $g^n_1$ and $g^n_2$, a readily implementable procedure, aimed at extracting the neutron spin structure functions from those of $^3$He, is shown to hold. Moreover, the first moment of $g^3_1(x)$ was evaluated, aiming at providing a valuable check of the Bjorken sum rule. The present analysis is relevant for experiments nvolving polarized beams planned at the future facilities, like the Electron Ion Colliders.

In the kinematics of forth-coming experiments at JLab, it is found that the nuclear effects arising within an Impulse Approximation approach are under control.

Abstract:The nucleon structure functions probed in deep-inelastic scattering at large virtualities form an important tool to test Quantum Chromdynamics (QCD) through precision measurements of the strong coupling constant $\alpha_s(M_Z^2)$ and the different parton distribution functions. The exact knowledge of these quantities is also of importance for all precision measurements at hadron colliders. During the last two decades very significant progress has been made in performing precision calculations. We review the theoretical status reached for both unpolarized and polarized lepton-hadron scattering based on perturbative QCD.

The effect of $T$-invariance violation in scattering of polarized $^3$He nuclei on tensor-polarized deuterons

Abstract:In the interaction of a transversely polarized nuclear beam with a tensor-polarized deuteron target, a nonzero value of the component of the total cross section of the process corresponding to this combination of polarizations is an unambiguous signal of $T$-invariance violation while $P$-parity is preserved. The method developed earlier for calculating this component of the total cross section for $pd$ scattering based on the Glauber theory has been generalized by us to the case of $^3$He$d$ scattering, and its energy dependence in the range of beam energies 0.1--1 GeV/nucleon has been calculated. It is found that in $^3$He$d$ collisions, in contrast to $pd$ scattering, the contribution of only one type of $T$-violating nucleon-nucleon forces dominates, which is essential for extraction of the unknown constant of this interaction from the corresponding data.

Abstract:One of the important issues of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) - the fundamental theory of strong interaction, is the understanding of the role of the quark-gluon interactions in the processes involving nuclear targets. One direction in such studies is to explore the onset of the quark gluon degrees of freedom in nuclear dynamics. The other direction is using the nuclear targets as a `micro-labs' in studies of the QCD processes involving protons and neutrons bound in the nucleus. In the proposed research, we work in both directions considering high energy photo- and electro-production reactions involving deuteron and $^3$He nuclei. In the first half of the research, we study the high energy break-up of the $^3$He nucleus, caused by a incoming photon, into a proton-deuteron pair at the large center of mass scattering angle. The main motivation of the research is the theoretical interpretation of recent experimental data which revealed the unprecedentedly large exponent $s^{-17}$, for the energy dependence of the differential cross section. In the present research, we extend the theoretical formalism of the hard QCD rescattering model to calculate energy and angular dependences of the absolute cross section of the $\gamma ^3\text{He}\rightarrow pd$ reaction in high momentum transfer limit. The second half of the research explores the deep-inelastic scattering of a polarized electron off the polarized deuteron and $^3$He nuclei, to explore the quark-gluon structure of polarized neutron. In this work, we developed a comprehensive theoretical framework for calculation of the all relevant nuclear effects that will allow the accurate extraction of the neutron data from deep-inelastic scattering involving deuteron and $^3$He targets.

Abstract:Antiproton scattering off $^3\He$ and $^4\He$ targets is considered at beam energies below 300 MeV within the Glauber-Sitenko approach, utilizing the $\bar N N$ amplitudes of the Jülich model as input. A good agreement with available data on differential $\bar p ^4\He$ cross sections and on $\bar p ^3\He$ and $\pbar ^4\He$ reaction cross sections is obtained. Predictions for polarized total $\bar p ^3$He cross sections are presented, calculated within the single-scattering approximation and including Coulomb-nuclear interference effects. The kinetics of the polarization buildup is discussed.

Abstract:Since 2012, a BNL-MIT collaboration has worked to develop a polarized $^3$He ion source for the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) using the existing Electron Beam Ionization Source (EBIS). $^3$He atoms are polarized using optical pumping at high field and injected as neutral atoms into the EBIS. A critical issue is the demonstration that the polarization of the extracted $^3$He$^{++}$ ions from the source is high. In 2014, a concept to measure the nuclear polarization was developed in this paper. Since then, the development of the polarized $^3$He ion source has progressed, the polarimeter is under construction, and the demonstration experiment is expected to take place in the next several years.

Abstract:The parity violating longitudinal asymmetry ${\cal A}$ is calculated for quasielastic electron scattering. We use a variety of relativistic mean field models for the response of nuclear matter and $^{12}$C at a momentum transfer of q=550 MeV/c. Relativistic effects from a reduced nucleon mass, RPA correlations and vacuum polarization can all change ${\cal A}$ by a relatively large amount. These large nuclear structure corrections could make it impossible to extract strange quark matrix elements or radiative corrections to weak axial currents.

Abstract:The electromagnetic responses obtained from Green's function Monte Carlo (GFMC) calculations are based on realistic treatments of nuclear interactions and currents. The main limitations of this method comes from its nonrelativistic nature and its computational cost, the latter hampering the direct evaluation of the inclusive cross sections as measured by experiments. We extend the applicability of GFMC in the quasielastic region to intermediate momentum transfers by performing the calculations in a reference frame that minimizes nucleon momenta. Additional relativistic effects in the kinematics are accounted for employing the two-fragment model. In addition, we developed a novel algorithm, based on the concept of first-kind scaling, to compute the inclusive electromagnetic cross section of $^4$He through an accurate and reliable interpolation of the response functions. A very good agreement is obtained between theoretical and experimental cross sections for a variety of kinematical setups. This offers a promising prospect for the data analysis of neutrino-oscillation experiments that requires an accurate description of nuclear dynamics in which relativistic effects are fully accounted for.

Abstract:These lectures include an introduction to the partonic description of the proton, the photon and the `colour singlet', as seen in inclusive and semi-inclusive DIS, in $e^+e^-$ collisions, and in diffractive processes, respectively. Their formal treatment using structure, fragmentation, and fracture functions is outlined giving an insight into the perturbative QCD framework for these functions. A comprehensive theory for relativistic polaritonic chemistry: a four components ab initio treatment of molecular systems coupled to quantum fields

Abstract:We present a new ab-initio approach to study molecules containing heavy atoms strongly interacting with quantum fields in optical devices. The relativistic quantum electrodynamics (QED) theory has been rewritten with a formalism close to relativistic quantum chemistry. This general framework represents the ideal starting point to extend the main quantum chemistry methods to relativistic polaritonic. The Polaritonic Dirac Hartree Fock (Pol-DHF) approach is the first method we propose based on this theory. Pol-DHF allows for the simulation of field induced effects on the ground and excited state properties of heavy transition metals molecular complexes. The method is able to include not only the effects of the photons but can be easily extended also to include explicit interactions with positrons. Application of Pol-DHF to three metal hydrides revealed the importance of including relativistic effects to the treatment in strong coupling conditions. Due to an accurate description of spin-orbit coupling, the method is able to reproduce polaritonic effects happening at the crossing between singlet and triplet potential energy surfaces.
