Abstract:We present a new ab-initio approach to study molecules containing heavy atoms strongly interacting with quantum fields in optical devices. The relativistic quantum electrodynamics (QED) theory has been rewritten with a formalism close to relativistic quantum chemistry. This general framework represents the ideal starting point to extend the main quantum chemistry methods to relativistic polaritonic. The Polaritonic Dirac Hartree Fock (Pol-DHF) approach is the first method we propose based on this theory. Pol-DHF allows for the simulation of field induced effects on the ground and excited state properties of heavy transition metals molecular complexes. The method is able to include not only the effects of the photons but can be easily extended also to include explicit interactions with positrons. Application of Pol-DHF to three metal hydrides revealed the importance of including relativistic effects to the treatment in strong coupling conditions. Due to an accurate description of spin-orbit coupling, the method is able to reproduce polaritonic effects happening at the crossing between singlet and triplet potential energy surfaces.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to develop a brand - new ab - initio method for studying molecular systems containing heavy atoms that interact strongly with the quantum field in optical devices. Specifically, the goal of the paper is to establish a theoretical framework of relativistic polaron chemistry that can describe photon - induced effects. This framework can extend the main quantum - chemical methods to the field of relativistic polarons. In particular, a polaron Dirac - Hartree - Fock (Pol - DHF) method based on this theory is proposed. ### Core Problems of the Paper 1. **Developing the Relativistic Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) Theory**: - This paper aims to rewrite the relativistic quantum electrodynamics theory to make it closer to the form of relativistic quantum chemistry, so as to be better applied to the study of the coupling between molecular systems containing heavy atoms and the quantum field. - This theoretical framework provides an ideal starting point for extending the main quantum - chemical methods to relativistic polaron chemistry. 2. **Proposing the Polaron Dirac - Hartree - Fock (Pol - DHF) Method**: - The Pol - DHF method is the first method based on the new theory proposed in the paper, which can simulate the influence of photons on the ground - state and excited - state properties of heavy - transition - metal molecular complexes. - This method not only takes into account the influence of photons, but can also be easily extended to include the explicit interaction with positrons. 3. **Dealing with Relativistic Effects under Strong - Coupling Conditions**: - By applying the Pol - DHF method to study three metal hydrides, the importance of including relativistic effects under strong - coupling conditions is revealed. - Due to the accurate description of spin - orbit coupling, this method can reproduce the polaron effects at the singlet - and triplet - state potential - energy - surface crossings. ### Key Contributions of the Paper - **Establishment of the Theoretical Framework**: A general relativistic QED theoretical framework is proposed, which lays the foundation for the subsequent development of quantum - chemical methods. - **Proposal of a New Method**: The Pol - DHF method is proposed for the first time, which can accurately describe the properties of molecular systems containing heavy atoms under strong - coupling conditions. - **Experimental Verification**: By applying the Pol - DHF method to study specific molecular systems, the validity and practicality of the theory are verified. ### Background and Significance of the Paper - **Development of Polaron Chemistry**: In recent years, using light as a tool to non - invasively control and manipulate the properties of molecules and materials has become an emerging research direction at the intersection of physics, chemistry, and materials science. - **New Phenomena under Strong - Coupling Conditions**: When matter is strongly coupled with photons, a hybrid state (polaron) with partial light and partial matter characteristics will be formed. This strong - coupling condition is usually achieved in well - designed optical devices, such as Fabry - Perot cavities. - **Multidisciplinary Applications**: Polaron chemistry has been observed in various manifestations in absorption spectra, photoreaction rates, and conductivity, bringing new possibilities to fields such as materials science and quantum computing. In summary, this paper provides important tools and means for in - depth understanding of the properties of molecular systems containing heavy atoms under strong - coupling conditions by developing new theoretical frameworks and methods.
