Abstract:Polarization has opened a new physics chapter in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Since the first prediction and experimental observation of global spin polarization, a lot of progress has been made in understanding its features, both at experimental and theoretical level. In this paper, we give an overview on the recent advances in this field. The covered topics include a review of measurements of global and local spin polarization of hyperons and the global spin alignment of vector mesons. We account for the basic theoretical framework to describe spin polarization in a relativistic fluid such as the Quark Gluon Plasma, including statistical quantum field theory and local thermodynamic equilibrium, spin hydrodynamics, relativistic kinetic theory with spin and coalescence models.

Abstract:Since the first evidence of a global polarization of $\Lambda$ hyperons in relativistic nuclear collisions in 2017, spin has opened a new window in the field, both at experimental and theoretical level, and an exciting perspective. The current state of the field is reviewed with regard to the theoretical understanding of the data, reporting on the most recent achievements and envisioning possible developments. The intriguing connections of spin physics in relativistic matter with fundamental questions in quantum field theory and applications in the non-relativistic domain are discussed.

Abstract:The strongly interacting system created in ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions behaves almost as an ideal fluid with rich patterns of the velocity field exhibiting strong vortical structure. Vorticity of the fluid, via spin-orbit coupling, leads to particle spin polarization. Due to the finite orbital momentum of the system, the polarization on average is not zero; it depends on the particle momenta reflecting the spatial variation of the local vorticity. In the last few years, this field experienced a rapid growth due to experimental discoveries of the global and local polarizations. Recent measurements triggered further development of the theoretical description of the spin dynamics and suggestions of several new mechanisms for particle polarization.

Abstract:We review the calculation of polarization in a relativistic fluid within the framework of statistical quantum field theory. We derive the expressions of the spin density matrix and the mean spin vector both for a single quantum relativistic particle and for a quantum free field. After introducing the formalism of the covariant Wigner function for the scalar and the Dirac field, the relation between spin density matrix and the covariant Wigner function is obtained. The formula is applied to the fluid produced in relativistic nuclear collisions by using the local thermodynamic equilibrium density operator and recovering previously known formulae. The dependence of these results on the spin tensor and pseudo-gauge transformations of the stress-energy tensor is addressed.

Collective dynamics of polarized spin-half fermions in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

Abstract:Relativistic hydrodynamics has been quite successful in describing the properties of strongly-interacting matter produced in heavy-ion collision experiments. Recently, there has been a significant advancement in this field to explain the spin polarization of hadrons emitted in these processes. Although current models have successfully explained some of the experimental data based on spin-vorticity coupling, they still lack a clear understanding of differential measurements. This is an indication that the spin needs to be treated as an independent degree of freedom whose dynamics is not entirely bound to flow circulation. In particular, if the spin is a macroscopic property of the system, in equilibrium its dynamics should follow hydrodynamic laws. In this thesis, we develop a framework of relativistic perfect-fluid hydrodynamics which includes spin degrees of freedom from kinetic theory, and use it for modeling the dynamics of matter produced in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Following experimental observations, we assume that the polarization effects are small and derive conservation laws for net-baryon current, energy-momentum tensor, and spin tensor based on the de Groot-van Leeuwen-van Weert pseudogauge. Subsequently, we present various properties of the spin polarization tensor and its components, analyze the propagation properties of the spin polarization components, and derive the spin-wave velocity for arbitrary statistics. We find that only the transverse spin components propagate, analogously to the EM waves. Finally, we study the spacetime evolution of spin polarization for the systems respecting certain spacetime symmetries and calculate the mean spin polarization per particle, which can be compared to the experimental data. We find that, for some observables, our spin polarization results agree qualitatively with the experimental findings and other model calculations.

Abstract:The polarization of the $\Lambda$ particle offers the unique opportunity to study the hydrodynamic gradients in the Quark-Gluon Plasma formed in heavy-ion collisions. However, the theoretical formula commonly used to calculate polarization is only a linear order expansion in thermal vorticity and neglects higher-order corrections. Here, I present an exact calculation to all orders in (constant) thermal vorticity at global equilibrium, obtaining the analytic form of the spin density matrix and the polarization vector for massive particles of any spin. Finally, I extend these results to local equilibrium and assess their phenomenological impact by numerically calculating the polarization vector in a 3+1 hydrodynamic simulation.

Abstract:We study helicity polarization through the (3+1) -dimensional relativistic viscous hydrodynamic models at sNN=200 GeV Au+Au collisions. Similar to the local spin polarization, we consider the helicity polarization beyond global equilibrium and investigate the contributions induced by thermal vorticity, shear viscous tensor, and the fluid acceleration. We find that the local helicity polarization induced by thermal vorticity dominates over other contributions. It also implies that, in low-energy collisions, the fluid vorticity as part of thermal vorticity may play the crucial role in the total helicity polarization. Such a finding could be useful for probing the local strength of vorticity in rotational quark gluon plasmas by measuring helicity polarization. Our simulation confirms the strict space reversal symmetry, whereas we also compare our numerical results with approximated relations derived from ideal Bjorken flow. Abstract:Heavy ion collisions generate strong fluid vorticity in the produced hot quark-gluon matter which could in turn induce measurable spin polarization of hadrons. We review recent progress on the vorticity formation and spin polarization in heavy ion collisions with transport models. We present an introduction to the fluid vorticity in non-relativistic and relativistic hydrodynamics and address various properties of the vorticity formed in heavy ion collisions. We discuss the spin polarization in a vortical fluid using the Wigner function formalism in which we derive the freeze-out formula for the spin polarization. Finally, we give a brief overview of recent theoretical results for both the global and local spin polarization of Lambda and (Lambda) over bar hyperons.
Reexamination of local spin polarization beyond global equilibrium in relativistic heavy ion collisions

Abstract:We study local spin polarization in the relativistic hydrodynamic model. Generalizing the Wigner functions previously obtained from chiral kinetic theory by Y. Hidaka et al. [Phys. Rev. D 97, 016004 (20182470-001010.1103/PhysRevD.97.016004)] to the massive case, we present the possible contributions up to the order of ℏ from thermal vorticity, shear viscous tensor, other terms associated with the temperature and chemical-potential gradients, and electromagnetic fields to the local spin polarization. We then implement the (3+1)–dimensional viscous hydrodynamic model to study the spin polarizations from these sources with a small chemical potential and ignorance of electromagnetic fields by adopting an equation of state different from those in other recent studies. Although the shear correction alone upon the local polarization results in a sign and azimuthal-angle dependence more consistent with experimental observations, as also discovered in other recent studies, it is mostly suppressed by the contributions from thermal vorticity and other terms that yield an opposite trend. It is found that the total local spin polarization can be very sensitive to the equation of states, the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density, and the freeze-out temperature.

Abstract:The quark-gluon plasma produced by collisions between ultra-relativistic heavy nuclei is well described in the language of hydrodynamics. Non-central collisions are characterized by very large angular momentum, which in a fluid system manifests as flow vorticity. This rotational structure can lead to a spin polarization of the hadrons that eventually emerge from the plasma, providing experimental access to flow substructure at unprecedented detail. Recently, first observations of $\Lambda$ hyperon polarization along the direction of collisional angular momentum have been reported. These measurements are in broad agreement with hydrodynamic and transport-based calculations and reveal that the QGP is the most vortical fluid ever observed. However, there remain important tensions between theory and observation which might be fundamental in nature. In the relatively mature field of heavy ion physics, the discovery of global hyperon polarization and three-dimensional simulations of the collision have opened an entirely new direction of research. We discuss the current status of this rapidly developing area and directions for future research.

Exact spin polarization of massive and massless particles in relativistic fluids at global equilibrium

Abstract:We present the exact form of the spin polarization vector and the spin density matrix of massive and massless free particles of any spin and helicity at general global equilibrium in a relativistic fluid with non-vanishing thermal vorticity, thus extending the known expression at the linear order. The exact form is obtained by means of the analytic continuation of the relativistic density operator to imaginary thermal vorticity and the resummation of the obtained series. The phenomenological implications for the polarization of the $\Lambda$ hyperon in relativistic heavy-ion collisions are addressed.

Abstract:Global polarization effect is an important physical phenomenon reflecting spin-orbit couplings in heavy ion collisions. Since STAR’s observation of the global polarization of \begin{document}$\Lambda$\end{document} hyperons in Au+Au collisions in 2017, this effect has attracted a lot of interests in the field. In the hot and dense matter produced in heavy ion collisions, the spin-orbit couplings come from non-local collisions between particles, in which the orbital angular momentum involves the space and momentum information of the colliding particles, so it is necessary to describe the particle collisions with spin-orbit couplings in phase space. In addition, the spin-orbit coupling is a quantum effect, which requires quantum theory. In combination of two aspects, the quantum kinetic theory based on covariant Wigner functions has become a powerful tool to describe the global polarization effect. In this paper, we introduce the quantum kinetic theory for spin-1/2 Fermion system based on Wigner functions as well as the spin transport theory developed on this basis. The recent research progress of spin transport theory provides a solid theoretical foundation for simulating the space-time evolution of spin polarization effects in heavy ion collisions.

Abstract:In non-central relativistic heavy ion collisions,the colliding nuclear system possesses a huge global orbital angular momentum in the direction opposite to the normal of the reaction plane.Due to the spin-orbit coupling in strong interaction,such a huge orbital angular momentum leads to a global spin polarization of the quark matter system produced in the collision process.The global polarization effect in high energy heavy ion collisions was first predicted theoretically and confirmed by STAR experiments at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider in Brookhaven National Laboratory.The discovery has attracted much attention to the study of spin effects in heavy ion collision and leads to a new direction in high energy heavy ion physics) Spin Physics in Heavy Ion Collisions.In this paper,we briefly review the original ideas,the calculation methods,the main results and recent theoretical developments in last years.First,we present a short discussion of the spin-orbit coupling which is an intrinsic property for a relativistic fermionic quantum system.Then we review how the global orbital angular momentum can be generated innon-central heavy ion collisions and how the global orbital angular momentum can be transferred to the local orbital angular momentum distribution in two limit model|Landan fireball model and Bjorken scaling model.After that,we review how we can describe the scattering process with initial local orbital angular momentum in the formalism of scattering cross section in impact parameter space and how we calculate the polarization of the quarks and antiquarks in quark gluon plasma produced in non-central heavy ion collisions after single or multiple scattering.We also give a brief review on how the global polarization can be predicted from the formalism of relativistic hydrodynamics with the generalized Cooper-Frye formula with spin.Finally,we discuss how the quark’s polarization can be transferred to the final hadron’s polarization.We focus on the hyperon’s polarization and vector meson’s spin alignment produced in heavy-ion collisions.
Spin polarization of an expanding and rotating system

Abstract:We study the longitudinal spin polarization of a relativistic fluid of massive spin-1/2 particles undergoing a boost-invariant expansion in the longitudinal direction and rotating in the transverse plane. We express the polarization vector in terms of spin moments and derive closed equations of motion for the latter using spin kinetic theory with a nonlocal relaxation time approximation. These equations of motion are valid at any time of the evolution, from the free-streaming regime to the hydrodynamic regime. At late time, the polarization features contributions from gradients of the fluid velocity and of the temperature, that emerge from the nonlocal part of the collision term. Our results can be used to explore polarization phenomena in the context of heavy-ion collisions.

Abstract:We give a brief overview of recent theoretical and experimental results on the chiral magnetic effect and spin polarization effect in heavy-ion collisions. We present updated experimental results for the chiral magnetic effect and related phenomena. The time evolution of the magnetic fields in different models is discussed. The newly developed quantum kinetic theory for massive fermions is reviewed. We present theoretical and experimental results for the polarization of Λ hyperons and the ρ _00 value of vector mesons.

Abstract:The main goals of `spin physics' are recalled, and some theoretical and phenomenological aspects of longitudinally polarized deep inelastic scattering and other hard processes are reviewed. The spin dependent parton densities of protons and photons and polarized fragmentation functions are introduced, and the relevant theoretical framework in next-to-leading order QCD is briefly summarized. Technical complications typical for spin dependent calculations beyond the leading order of QCD, like a consistent gamma_5 prescription, are sketched, and some recent results for jet and heavy quark production are discussed. Special emphasis is put on conceivable measurements at a future polarized upgrade of the HERA collider which is currently under consideration.

Abstract:We compute the fermion spin distribution in the vortical fluid created in off-central high-energy heavy-ion collisions. We employ the event-by-event (3+1)D viscous hydrodynamic model. The spin polarization density is proportional to the local fluid vorticity in quantum kinetic theory. As a result of strong collectivity, the spatial distribution of the local vorticity on the freeze-out hyper-surface strongly correlates to the rapidity and azimuthal angle distribution of fermion spins. We investigate the sensitivity of the local polarization to the initial fluid velocity in the hydrodynamic model and compute the global polarization of Λ hyperons by the AMPT model. The energy dependence of the global polarization agrees with the STAR data.

Abstract:We derive an expression for the local transverse polarization of a boost-invariant expanding system of massive particles, which involves a set of dynamical spin moments. Starting from spin kinetic theory, we obtain a closed set of equations of motion for these spin moments. Longitudinal spin polarization in a thermal model

Abstract:We use a thermal model with single freeze-out to determine longitudinal polarization of $\Lambda$ hyperons emitted from a hot and rotating hadronic medium. We consider the top RHIC energies and use the model parameters determined in the previous analyses of particle spectra and elliptic flow. Using a direct connection between the spin polarization tensor and thermal vorticity, we reproduce earlier results which indicate a quadrupole structure of the longitudinal component of the polarization three-vector with an opposite sign compared to that found in the experiment. We further use only the spatial components of the thermal vorticity in the laboratory system to define polarization and show that this leads to the correct sign and magnitude of the quadrupole structure. This procedure resembles a non-relativistic connection between the polarization three-vector and vorticity employed in other works. In general, our results bring further evidence that the spin polarization dynamics in heavy-ion collisions may be not directly related to the thermal vorticity. The additional material explains the construction of the hydrodynamicaly consistent gradients of fluid velocity and temperature in thermal models with the help of the perfect-fluid equations of motion.
