Abstract:The tolerance of the truly random number generator circuit is discussed in the article.The circuit is based on chaos and generates random number sequence that distributes uniformly.The article analyzes temperature drift of the reference voltage circuit that is highest precision required in the system,and shows its temperature curve after SPICE simulation.Then,the paper analyzes common-mode voltage and output voltage range of operational amplifier influenced by temperature and process problems that may appear.At last,switched-capacitor circuit related with chaotic expression directly is analyzed,and the simulation result according to the worst-case chaotic expression is obtained.Analysis temperature is between-40 ℃ and 105 ℃ as required in the military use.

Abstract:Based upon the analysis of random number generators (RNGs) which amplify noise directly, the paper proposes a new design theory to generate random number by combining noise source and chaotic transformation in analog circuit. According to the design guideline, the paper analyzes some characteristics of chaotic map, and proves the key character of smoothing. The paper also introduces how to choose parameters when employing these chaotic transformation maps and the test results of chips designed according to this method is given. Also, the proposed design can intrinsically protect the unpredictability of generated random numbers against some attacks on noise sources

Abstract:A new combing mechanism for generating random numbers hase been introduced in this paper. Using this method, we propose a generator that produces high-quality random numbers which has long period and fast sampling speed. Detailed tests have been taken by putting this generator into the major Monte Carlo code MCNP and got satisfying results.

Abstract:Problems for various random number generators accompanying the Wolff algorithm [U. Wolff, Phys. Rev. Lett. 62 (1989) 361; U. Wolff, Phys. Lett. B 228 (1989) 379] are discussed, including the hidden errors first reported in [A.M. Ferrenberg, D.P. Landau, Y.J. Wong, Phys. Rev. Lett. 69 (1992) 3382]. A general (though simple) method of twisting and combining for improving the performance of these generators is proposed. Some recent generators motivated by such a twisting and combining method with extremely long period are discussed. The proposed method provides a novel and simple way to improve RNGs in its performance.

Abstract:This is a review of pseudorandom number generators (RNG's) of the highest quality, suitable for use in the most demanding Monte Carlo calculations. All the RNG's we recommend here are based on the Kolmogorov-Anosov theory of mixing in classical mechanical systems, which guarantees under certain conditions and in certain asymptotic limits, that points on the trajectories of these systems can be used to produce random number sequences of exceptional quality. We outline this theory of mixing and establish criteria for deciding which RNG's are sufficiently good approximations to the ideal mathematical systems that guarantee highest quality. The well-known RANLUX (at highest luxury level) and its recent variant RANLUX++ are seen to meet our criteria, and some of the proposed versions of MIXMAX can be modified easily to meet the same criteria.

A Search for Good Pseudo-random Number Generators : Survey and Empirical Studies

Abstract:In today's world, several applications demand numbers which appear random but are generated by a background algorithm; that is, pseudo-random numbers. Since late $19^{th}$ century, researchers have been working on pseudo-random number generators (PRNGs). Several PRNGs continue to develop, each one demanding to be better than the previous ones. In this scenario, this paper targets to verify the claim of so-called good generators and rank the existing generators based on strong empirical tests in same platforms. To do this, the genre of PRNGs developed so far has been explored and classified into three groups -- linear congruential generator based, linear feedback shift register based and cellular automata based. From each group, well-known generators have been chosen for empirical testing. Two types of empirical testing has been done on each PRNG -- blind statistical tests with Diehard battery of tests, TestU01 library and NIST statistical test-suite and graphical tests (lattice test and space-time diagram test). Finally, the selected $29$ PRNGs are divided into $24$ groups and are ranked according to their overall performance in all empirical tests.

Abstract:A deterministic chaotic discrete time dynamical system can be used for random number generator (RNG). Initial condition sensitivity is the key characteristic of deterministic chaos. As initial condition is an analog value in the circuit, it will never be approached or reached in the digital measuring system. Small difference of initial value between symbol sequences generated by the measuring system will develop into great difference between later items of symbol sequences as to lead two sequences separate fully. Therefore, the symbol trajectory will never be predicted or reproduced. After analyzing the basic characteristic of a Piecewise Linearity Mapping, a design of analog circuits including switched capacitors is presented. To verify the expected distribution of the random number generated by the circuit, the dominating CMOS noise was studied with two noise models (thermal and flicker). To speed up the circuit simulation, a fast simulation method is proposed. Finally, the experimental result of the RNG in accordance with NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) standard was provided.
Statistical testing of random number generators and their improvement using randomness extraction

Abstract:Random number generators (RNGs) are notoriously hard to build and test, especially in a cryptographic setting. Although one cannot conclusively determine the quality of an RNG by testing the statistical properties of its output alone, running numerical tests is both a powerful verification tool and the only universally applicable method. In this work, we present and make available a comprehensive statistical testing environment (STE) that is based on existing statistical test suites. The STE can be parameterised to run lightweight (i.e. fast) all the way to intensive testing, which goes far beyond what is required by certification bodies. With it, we benchmark the statistical properties of several RNGs, comparing them against each other. We then present and implement a variety of post-processing methods, in the form of randomness extractors, which improve the RNG's output quality under different sets of assumptions and analyse their impact through numerical testing with the STE.

Abstract:Random numbers play a crucial role in science and industry. Many numerical methods require the use of random numbers, in particular the Monte Carlo method. Therefore it is of paramount importance to have efficient random number generators. The differences, advantages and disadvantages of true and pseudo random number generators are discussed with an emphasis on the intrinsic details of modern and fast pseudo random number generators. Furthermore, standard tests to verify the quality of the random numbers produced by a given generator are outlined. Finally, standard scientific libraries with built-in generators are presented, as well as different approaches to generate nonuniform random numbers. Potential problems that one might encounter when using large parallel machines are discussed.

Abstract:Random-number generators are frequently used in Monte Carlo simulation studies to examine expected statistical outcomes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the normality of number distributions generated by various random-number generators. The research question focused on when the random-number generator reached a normal distribution (efficiency) and at what sample size. Findings suggest that when using a random-number generator in a Monte Carlo simulation study, the following steps should be observed: (a) normality of number distribution should be checked-means and standard deviations, (b) sample size should be large (n > 10,000), (c) starting seed values should be tested with regard to normality of resulting number distribution, (d) the length of periods before numbers repeat should be considered, (e) serial correlation between number sequences should be examined, and (f) uniformity of number distributions should be checked.

Effects of the entropy source on Monte Carlo simulations

Abstract:In this paper we show how different sources of random numbers influence the outcomes of Monte Carlo simulations. We compare industry-standard pseudo-random number generators (PRNGs) to a quantum random number generator (QRNG) and show, using examples of Monte Carlo simulations with exact solutions, that the QRNG yields statistically significantly better approximations than the PRNGs. Our results demonstrate that higher accuracy can be achieved in the commonly known Monte Carlo method for approximating $\pi$. For Buffon's needle experiment, we further quantify a potential reduction in approximation errors by up to $1.89\times$ for optimal parameter choices when using a QRNG and a reduction of the sample size by $\sim 8\times$ for sub-optimal parameter choices. We attribute the observed higher accuracy to the underlying differences in the random sampling, where a uniformity analysis reveals a tendency of the QRNG to sample the solution space more homogeneously. Additionally, we compare the results obtained with the QRNG and PRNG in solving the non-linear stochastic Schrödinger equation, benchmarked against the analytical solution. We observe higher accuracy of the approximations of the QRNG and demonstrate that equivalent results can be achieved at 1/3 to 1/10-th of the costs.

Abstract:We o er a set of public-domain tools to aid the development and test of pseudorandom Clanguage computer programs running under 4.3bsd Unix. Our tools make it easier to reproduce experimental results, to report them in a standardized format, and to check their validity by using a di erent random number generator (RNG). Furthermore, the tools should help users avoid some of the common pitfalls in randomized experimentation. These pitfalls include the initial seeding of the RNG, the generation of random integers in a restricted range, and the use of RNGs with known weaknesses. Our tool suite also includes several of the standard tests on the \randomness" of an RNG. All the tests we implement are based on examining a Pearson's chi-square statistic for a process that, under the null hypothesis, independently places N items into k equiprobable bins. We provide a routine to calculate an approximate p-value for such test statistics, applying novel corrections for \small N ." Abstract:We present a new computational scheme, GRIP (Geometric Random Inner Products), for testing the quality of random number generators. The GRIP formalism utilizes geometric probability techniques to calculate the average scalar products of random vectors generated in geometric objects, such as circles and spheres. We show that these average scalar products define a family of geometric constants which can be used to evaluate the quality of random number generators. We explicitly apply the GRIP tests to several random number generators frequently used in Monte Carlo simulations, and demonstrate a new statistical property for good random number generators.

Abstract:In the quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method, the Pseudo-Random Number Generator (PRNG) plays a crucial role in determining the computation time. However, the hidden structure of the PRNG may lead to serious issues such as the breakdown of the Markov process. Here, we systematically analyze the performance of the different PRNGs on the widely used QMC method -- stochastic series expansion (SSE) algorithm. To quantitatively compare them, we introduce a quantity called QMC efficiency that can effectively reflect the efficiency of the algorithms. After testing several representative observables of the Heisenberg model in one and two dimensions, we recommend using LCG as the best choice of PRNGs. Our work can not only help improve the performance of the SSE method but also shed light on the other Markov-chain-based numerical algorithms.
