Abstract:A combined random number generator by Wichmann and Hill is studied in this note. Statistical and numerical computations show that a good initial value for this generator is not so easy to obtain, and hence the use of such generator seems dubious.

Abstract:Based upon the analysis of random number generators (RNGs) which amplify noise directly, the paper proposes a new design theory to generate random number by combining noise source and chaotic transformation in analog circuit. According to the design guideline, the paper analyzes some characteristics of chaotic map, and proves the key character of smoothing. The paper also introduces how to choose parameters when employing these chaotic transformation maps and the test results of chips designed according to this method is given. Also, the proposed design can intrinsically protect the unpredictability of generated random numbers against some attacks on noise sources
Implementation of A Chaos-Based ,High-Speed Truly Random Number Generator

Abstract:It is widely accepted that the core of any truly random number generator (TRNG) must be an intrinsically random physical process. However, theory of nonlinear systems and their chaotic behavior have provided an alternative way. This article chooses the piecewise-linear chaotic expression to design the RNG, analyses the influence of the expression's parameters to the iterative sequence and give the optimal scope for choosing the parameters. The TRNG is realized by analog circuit. It is composed of eight sub circuits whose structure is identical to each other and an anti-saturation circuit. Every sub circuit is composed of an operational circuit and a sample/hold circuit. Their working process is analysed. At the same time, the article also talks about how to eliminate the charge injection in the switched capacitor circuit. The chip of TRNG is taped out in TSMC with the 0.25 μm, mixed signal process. Total die area is 2.34 mm2.

Abstract:A deterministic chaotic discrete time dynamical system can be used for random number generator (RNG). Initial condition sensitivity is the key characteristic of deterministic chaos. As initial condition is an analog value in the circuit, it will never be approached or reached in the digital measuring system. Small difference of initial value between symbol sequences generated by the measuring system will develop into great difference between later items of symbol sequences as to lead two sequences separate fully. Therefore, the symbol trajectory will never be predicted or reproduced. After analyzing the basic characteristic of a Piecewise Linearity Mapping, a design of analog circuits including switched capacitors is presented. To verify the expected distribution of the random number generated by the circuit, the dominating CMOS noise was studied with two noise models (thermal and flicker). To speed up the circuit simulation, a fast simulation method is proposed. Finally, the experimental result of the RNG in accordance with NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) standard was provided.

Abstract:The generation of good pseudo-random numbers is the base of many important fields in scientific computing, such as randomized algorithms and numerical solution of stochastic differential equations.In this paper, a class of random number generators (RNGs) based on Weyl sequence is proposed.The uniformity of those RNGs is proved theoretically.Statistical and numerical computations show the efficiency of the methods.

Abstract:In today's world, several applications demand numbers which appear random but are generated by a background algorithm; that is, pseudo-random numbers. Since late $19^{th}$ century, researchers have been working on pseudo-random number generators (PRNGs). Several PRNGs continue to develop, each one demanding to be better than the previous ones. In this scenario, this paper targets to verify the claim of so-called good generators and rank the existing generators based on strong empirical tests in same platforms. To do this, the genre of PRNGs developed so far has been explored and classified into three groups -- linear congruential generator based, linear feedback shift register based and cellular automata based. From each group, well-known generators have been chosen for empirical testing. Two types of empirical testing has been done on each PRNG -- blind statistical tests with Diehard battery of tests, TestU01 library and NIST statistical test-suite and graphical tests (lattice test and space-time diagram test). Finally, the selected $29$ PRNGs are divided into $24$ groups and are ranked according to their overall performance in all empirical tests.

Hyperchaotic System-Based Pseudorandom Number Generator.

Abstract:Pseudorandom sequences are very important in the field of cryptography. The characteristics such as non-linearity and random-like behaviours make chaotic systems suited to generate pseudorandom sequences. However, most of chaos-based pseudorandom number generators have a typical shortcoming. That is, the finite precision in all processors may cause the chaotic systems to degenerate into a periodic function or a fixed point. To overcome this shortcoming, a hyperchaos-based generator is proposed. First, a new hyperchaotic system with bigger Lyapunov exponent is constructed. Then the self-shrinking generator, which is superior to many other linear feedback shift register-based generators, is used to perturb the hyperchaotic sequences to decrease the period degeneration and improve the performance of the sequences. The proposed generator is named as hyperchaos with self-shrinking perturbance generator (H-SSP generator). The analysis results show that the H-SSP generator has better performance.

Abstract:With the extensive use of RFID systems, the problem of information security becomes more and more critical. Cryptography can offer private communications between the RFID reader and tag by using elaborately generated cryptographic keys. These unpredictable and irreproducible secret keys determine the communication security, and they are normally created by a nondeterministic random number generator (RNG) [1]. In current RFID technologies, pseudo random number generators (PRNG) serve as random number sources. Owing to the mechanism of PRNGs, their output numbers show poor randomicity. These less random secret keys, with no doubt, reduce the security of data transmission. An oscillator-based Truly Random Number Generator application scheme in [2] provides a better solution. The TRNG exploits thermal noise of two resistors to modulate the edge of a sampling clock. The white noise based cryptographic keys prevent potential attackers to perform any effective prediction about the generator’s output even if the design is well-known. A major topic of this paper is to discuss how to realize a TRNG in the RFID tag system.

Abstract:True random number generators are in general more secure than pseudo random number generators. In this paper, we propose a novel true random number generator which generates a 256-bit random number by computer mouse movement. It is cheap, convenient and universal for personal computers. To eliminate the effect of similar movement patterns generated by the same user, three chaos-based approaches, namely, discretized 2D chaotic map permutation, spatiotemporal chaos and “MASK” algorithm, are adopted to post-process the captured mouse movements. Random bits generated by three users are tested using NIST statistical tests. Both the spatiotemporal chaos approach and the “MASK” algorithm pass the tests successfully. However, the latter has a better performance in terms of efficiency and effectiveness and so is more practical for common personal computer applications.

Abstract:A pseudo-random sequence generator (PRNG), L12RC4, inspired by the LZSS compression algorithm and RC4 stream cipher, was presented and implemented. The result of the NIST and Diehard test suite indicate that the L12RC4 is a good PRNG, and so it seems to be sound and may be suitable for use in some cryptographic applications. We also found that the probability distribution of the index value frequency is associated with the compression pass and INDEX_BIT_COUNT value. As for one pass mode, the greater INDEX_BIT_COUNT value, the more uniformly distributed, and the double pass mode has better uniformity than the one pass mode.

Abstract:We propose a unifiedmethodology for converting any probability distribution which satisfies a few simple conditions to a uniformly distributed random bit stream. The proposed methodology is based on a bit truncation scheme and can be trivially implemented by basic circuit modules. A sufficient condition is derived to determine the optimal truncation. The proposed methodology is verified by three different true random number generators. Experimental results reveal that the proposed methodology can cope with different types of probability distributions, and the generated random numbers are of high quality and good randomness.

Abstract:With the increasing concerns over the security and privacy of Web based applications, many solutions based on strong cryptography have been proposed to protect client side Web applications against attacks such as phishing, pharming and even server side attacks. While strong cryptography is used, one critical building block in cryptosystem, the random number generator, is often neglected. Considering this situation, in this paper we design and implement a pseudo-random number generator only rely on ubiquitous Web browser abilities - JavaScript, HTML and AJAX. We also provide a mechanism called Pseudo-cookiefor JavaScript programs to access operating system services for retrieving random or entropy values without changing Web browser security policies. The security model, analysis and performance evaluation demonstrate that our method is secure and efficient.

Abstract:Problems for various random number generators accompanying the Wolff algorithm [U. Wolff, Phys. Rev. Lett. 62 (1989) 361; U. Wolff, Phys. Lett. B 228 (1989) 379] are discussed, including the hidden errors first reported in [A.M. Ferrenberg, D.P. Landau, Y.J. Wong, Phys. Rev. Lett. 69 (1992) 3382]. A general (though simple) method of twisting and combining for improving the performance of these generators is proposed. Some recent generators motivated by such a twisting and combining method with extremely long period are discussed. The proposed method provides a novel and simple way to improve RNGs in its performance.

This article presents a simplified and efficient way based on linear feedback shift registers and the specific architecture of FPGA to generate pseudo random numbers. Compared with other methods, such a generator not only has a longer period but also has better statistical characteristics.

Abstract:Quantum random number generator harnesses the power of quantum mechanics to generate true random numbers, making it valuable for various scientific applications. However, real-world devices often suffer from imperfections that can undermine the integrity and privacy of generated randomness. To combat this issue, we present a novel quantum random number generator and experimentally demonstrate it. Our approach circumvents the need for exhaustive characterization of measurement devices, even in the presence of a quantum side channel. Additionally, we also do not require detailed characterization of the source, relying instead on reasonable assumptions about encoding dimension and noise constraints. Leveraging commercially available all-fiber devices, we achieve a randomness generation rate of 40 kbps.

Abstract:We propose what we believe to be a new approach to nondeterministic random-number generation. The randomness originated from the uncorrelated nature of consecutive laser pulses with Poissonian photon statistics and that of photon number detections is used to generate random bit, and the von Neumann correction method is used to extract the final random bit. This method is proved to be bias free in randomness generation, provided that the single photon detections are mutually independent. Further, it has the advantage in fast random bit generation, since no postprocessing is needed. A true random-number generator based on this method is realized, and its randomness is tested and guaranteed using three statistical test batteries.

Abstract:In recent years, various chaotic equation based pseudorandom number generators have been proposed. However, the chaotic equations are all defined in the real number field. In this paper, an equation is proposed and proved to be chaotic in the imaginary axis. And a pseudorandom number generator is constructed based on the chaotic equation. The alteration of the definitional domain of the chaotic equation from the real number field to the complex one provides a new approach to the construction of chaotic equations, and a new method to generate pseudorandom number sequences accordingly. Both theoretical analysis and experimental results show that the sequences generated by the proposed pseudorandom number generator possess many good properties.
