Abstract:Refractory high entropy alloys (RHEAs) are a new class of materials that have gained significant attention in recent years due to their unique properties. In the present work, the effect of Hf content and annealing on microstructural characteristics and mechanical properties of ZrNbTaHf x alloys were studied. The results indicate that these alloys exhibit a metastable dual-phase body-centered cubic (BCC) and hexagonal close packing (HCP) structure. The as-cast ZrNbTaHf x alloys have a typical dendritic structure, dominated by BCC solid solution phase and contain a small amount of HCP solid solution phase. With the addition of the Hf element, the hardness of the alloys increases significantly. During annealing at 1773 K, element diffusion occurs, and then the ZrHf-rich and NbTa-rich regions formed. The heat treatment results in the coarsening of the BCC phase and the HCP phase accumulates at the grain boundary, which significantly enhances the hardness and strength of the alloys. The as-cast alloys, characterized by low strength and substantial compressive deformation, experienced a remarkable transformation after annealing. Following annealing, the strength of the Hf0.8 alloy is 1.9 times that of its as-cast counterpart, accompanied by a compression deformation capability of approximately 15%.
