Abstract:The key factor associated with the black cotton soil is its swelling and shrinkage behaviour when it is in contact with water. Index properties and moulding water content plays an important role in geotechnical engineering. Depending on the function requirement available in the field, soils are compacted either on dry side of optimum, optimum or wet side of optimum. Therefore, in this paper, an attempt has been made to study the effect of rice husk ash (RHA) along with carbide lime (CL) and other additives on the strength properties of black cotton soil. Strength test shows optimum dosage of 20% RHA along with 8% CL suitable for stabilization of black cotton soil. To study the effect of moulding water content on these additives along with sulphates of sodium and calcium on strength development process of stabilized soil, specimens were prepared by incorporating three significant combinations of water content and dry density and unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of soil specimens which were determined for immediate and different curing periods. Results show that soil compacted on dry side of optimum shows a higher strength than it is compacted on wet side of optimum as well as at optimum conditions; this is because soil treated on dry side of optimum resembles flocculated structure. Soils treated with sodium sulphate and calcium sulphate show a least strength for longer days of curing period due to the formation of ettringite needle, and it is justified by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy studies.
