Abstract:Graded cathode catalyst layer (CCL) design can improve performance and reduce the cost of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). However, it sacrifices the uniformity of oxygen concentration, thereby shortening the duration of PEMFC. Thus, this paper introduces a many-objective optimization algorithm called the Non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-third version (NSGA-III) to optimize the performance, oxygen distribution quality, and cost of PEMFC with a graded CCL structure via four evaluation indexes. The four evaluation indexes include the new proposed local oxygen transport resistance and the uniformity of oxygen concentration at the Pt surface. Furthermore, artificial intelligence (AI) based models are established to enhance the optimization efficiency. Then, the NSGA-III algorithm is used to optimize the graded CCL structure parameters and operating voltage to find the Pareto solutions . Moreover, two optimization strategies are proposed to improve the power density and uniformity of oxygen concentration of PEMFC or to save the precious Pt and ionomer while maintaining the performance. Lastly, the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to an Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) method is used to select the optimal solution for each strategy. Results show that the AI-based models have enough predicting abilities, and the selected optimal solutions can satisfy the goals of the corresponding strategy, which provides efficient ways to develop high-performance, long-lifetime, or low-cost, long-lifespan PEMFCs.
