Abstract:Pile-soil interaction is one of the most critical factors in evaluating foundations’ static and seismic responses. During an earthquake, piles can become subject to stress caused by the surrounding soil and structure movement. To design a suitable seismic pile foundation, in addition to considering the effect of the structure on the pile (inertial interaction), the impact of the soil that applies to the pile (kinematic interaction) must be considered. Therefore, dynamic analysis of piles simultaneously exposed to both vertical and horizontal loads is one of the most essential subjects in geotechnical engineering. The present study evaluated various approaches proposed in the literature to determine the inertial and kinematic loads applied to the pile. Also, based on the results of the centrifuge test, the best method that could correctly predict the combined effect of these two loads on the pile response was presented. The results indicated that precise determination of the maximum lateral force exerted on the pile-soil-superstructure system plays a crucial role in the reliability of the theoretical methods employed to calculate the maximum bending moment of the pile. Also, if the appropriate theoretical approach is used, the accuracy can be similar to the 3D finite element analysis results.
