Abstract:Sustainable interdisciplinarity focuses on human–nature relations and a multitude of contemporary overlapping research between society and the environment. A variety of disciplines have played a large part in better understanding sustainable development since its high-profile emergence approximately a quarter century ago. At present, the forefront of sustainability research is an array of methods, techniques, and growing knowledge-base that considers past, present, and future pathways. Specific multi-disciplinary concentrations within the scope of societal changes, urban landscape transformations, international environmental comparative studies as well as key theories and dynamics relating to sustainable performance are explored. Specializations in complex sustainability issues address international governance arrangements, rules, and organizations—both public and private—within the scope of four themes: sustainability, human geography, environment, and interdisciplinary societal studies. This book contains eleven thoroughly refereed contributions concerning pressing issues that interlink sustainable interdisciplinarity with the presented themes in respect of the human–nature interface.

Abstract:Anxious about the failure of decisionmakers to significantly reduce ‘the human impact’ on Earth, many global change researchers are looking for ways and means to influence public policy, business strategy and civil society more strongly. As part of this, there is a greater emphasis on understanding and altering the ‘human dimensions’ of global environmental change. A number of physical and society‐environment geographers are involved in this endeavour, building on some valuable past achievements. But what lies ahead? I address this question by examining the rich idea of a ‘social contract’ – one little used in disciplinary debates about Geography's past, present and future, but now relatively common in certain wider discussions of anthropogenic global change. I suggest that there are currents of thinking in contemporary Geography that can offer something both new and much needed in the world of global change research. That ‘something’ is not ever more integrated, accurate analysis of dynamic, coupled human–environment interactions – as if we live in just one world requiring ever more ‘joined‐up’ and granular description, explanation and prediction. Instead, it is an approach to research that eschews ontological holism, epistemological monism and the fact–value dualism. This approach suggests that taking the human dimensions of environmental change seriously requires a new kind of global change research that is at once overtly political and intellectually plural. Far from being a charter for ‘bias’ or ‘relativism’, I show that this approach expresses the rich senses of responsibility, accountability and representation contained in the version of a new social contract I advocate here. A wider implication of my argument is that Geography needs new stories about the nature and merits of ‘intra‐disciplinarity’, ones better attuned to the role of research in fostering democracy in our ‘post‐normal’ times. Thinking afresh about how research should influence society promises to alter many geographers’ sense of self while usefully repurposing global change research across several disciplines.

Abstract:The world is changing at an accelerating pace due to increased human exploitation of the earth's resources and the consequent climate change and biodiversity loss crises. As a transdisciplinary discipline studying the coupled human and nature systems and their interactions, Geography has natural advantages to promote sustainable development. With the aim of stimulating sustainable development in the Anthropocene, the International Geography and Sustainability Workshop 2021 was held virtually during 23–24 November 2021. This editorial briefly reviews the development history of Geography, summarizes the presentations of keynote speakers, outlines the overall research framework, and discusses the future directions by which the discipline of Geography can be harnessed to advance sustainable development. The key outcomes are as follows: (1) The research paradigms of Geography are shifting from basic knowledge acquisition to understanding of coupling patterns and processes, and to the simulation and prediction of complex human-earth systems; (2) Landscape sustainability science and the metacoupling concept are emerging as new comprehensive research perspectives, and the framework of "Pattern—Process—Service—Sustainability" can be used as a basis to underpin Geography's role in sustainability; (3) Geography can support sustainable development in many ways, such as in agricultural development, disaster and risk monitoring and early warning, global climate change mitigation, and in helping to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Future research directions include: integrated geographical research on climate change and sustainable resource utilization; integrated geographical research on social and economic sustainable development; sustainable cascades of ecosystem structure, functions, services, and human well-being; metacoupling for sustainability; safe and justice space boundaries; the classification–coordination–collaboration approach; and geographical education for sustainable development.

Abstract:To understand the implications of migration for sustainable development requires a comprehensive consideration of a range of population movements and their feedback across space and time. This Perspective reviews emerging science at the interface of migration studies, demography, and sustainability, focusing on consequences of migration flows for nature-society interactions including on societal outcomes such as inequality; environmental causes and consequences of involuntary displacement; and processes of cultural convergence in sustainability practices in dynamic new populations. We advance a framework that demonstrates how migration outcomes result in identifiable consequences on resources, environmental burdens and well-being, and on innovation, adaptation, and challenges for sustainability governance. We elaborate the research frontiers of migration for sustainability science, explicitly integrating the full spectrum of regular migration decisions dominated by economic motives through to involuntary displacement due to social or environmental stresses. Migration can potentially contribute to sustainability transitions when it enhances well-being while not exacerbating structural inequalities or compound uneven burdens on environmental resources.

Abstract:Two basic dimensions for describing the human social development and human cultural phenomena are space and time. Previous humanities research emphasizes much of the attribution of phenomena itself and time dimension because of the technologic limitation and epistemological difference. Sometimes these research ignored the space dimension or retained the attitude of excluding it. Fortunately, more and more scholars have rethought the importance of spatial coordination system and begun to use spatial thinking in their research. These scholars come from the discipline of history, philosophy, literature, economics, sociology, anthropology, archeology, geography, politics, statistics, etc. This article, based on the instructive thought of space and integrated humanities and social science research, intends to take modern geographic information science and methodology and related space technology as a platform, to tentatively discuss the spatio -temporal characteristics of multi-disciplinary humanity and social science research. Emphases are given particularly to the spatial attribute, space distribution, spatially mutual affection and space evolution rule of the economic and cultural phenomena in human society. In this article, the authors put forward the elementary thought of spatially integrated humanities and social science research which includes basic concept, research object, basic methodology and development direction and wish it can promote the discussion.

Abstract:The disciplinary heritage of examining human–environment relationships continues to be vital but needs continual updating. In the Australian context, four threads of work can make key contributions in the next few decades: (1) recognising the depth of colonial heritage in 20th-century environmental thought, (2) supporting new Indigenous Geographies, (3) articulating environmental imaginaries beyond the settler-Indigenous binary and (4) responding to precarity and volatility with new ecologies. These threads each have distinct research trajectories – in terms of both their heritage in Geography and their development this century. They nevertheless have in common significant potential to help the discipline address the central shared challenge of contemporary life: facing climate change with commitments to justice. I consider wider implications, including three risks we need to be alert to. One risk is eco-fascism. Another is the re-naturalisation of environmental change as climate change impacts are exacerbated. The third is the amount of energy that needs to go into analysing and negotiating our volatile institutional contexts, potentially at the expense of what we have hitherto understood as core scholarly business.

Abstract:Cities all over the world have developed on different geological-geomorphological substrates. Different kinds of human activities have operated for millennia as geomorphic agents, generating numerous and various erosion landforms and huge anthropogenic deposits. Considering the increasing demand for land and the expansion of the built-up areas involving and disturbing any kind of natural system inside and surrounding the actual urban areas, it is not negligible how important the dynamics of the urban environment and its physical evolution are. In this context, this manuscript addresses insights into eight case studies of urban geomorphological analyses of cities in Italy, Greece, and Brazil. The studies are based on surveying and mapping geomorphological processes and landforms in urban areas, supporting both geo-hazard assessment, historical evolution, and paleomorphologies, as well as disseminating knowledge of urban geoheritage and educating about the anthropogenic impact on urban sustainability. We hypothesize that urban geomorphological analysis of several case studies addresses the physical environment of modern cities in a multi-temporal, multidisciplinary, and critical way concerning global changes. Thus, this study aims to illustrate and propose a novel approach to urban geomorphological investigation as a model for the understanding and planning of the physical urban environment on a European and global scale.

Abstract:Chinese human geography, as a branch of geography, has played an important role in the service of development for the country since the reform and opening up, at the same time, the process of national development has flourished the disciplines of human geography. However, much discussion has taken place on the status of human geography, in particular the debates have been long focused on human geography research methodology. In the context of globalization, the world needs to understand China, and China needs to enter the world system, thus in this process human geography will become even more important than ever. This paper explores the development process of human geography, and highlights the role that human geography has played as a major part of geography. On the one hand, economic, social and political changes in China have promoted the development of human geography, and on the other hand, Chinese human geography can make its due contributions to the development of the country with the enhancement of China's international economic status. Besides, human geography has its own law of development and research methods. We should emancipate the mind, and pay more attention to the law of value in economics, the value of social justice in social science , natural landscape and historical analysis methods, and analysis of quantity. There is a need to deepen and innovate the Chinese human geography research as well as to upgrade its results obtained in previous studies.

Abstract:Among different human activities having the goal to increase humanity’s quality of life as industrial, agricultural, commercial, transport, touristic ones, also activities connected to Earth and Planetary Insights must be mentioned. In this regard Earth and Planetary Insights especially by exploration, analysis and assessment encompass several scientific fields being an inter-, multi- and transdisciplinary task. The multitude of available approaches and existing applications of mentioned insights are covering almost all human activity fields ranging from main branches of Earth & Planetary Sciences such as for instance Surveying, Geology, in all its aspects, naming here hydrogeology, geotechnics, geophysics etc., Ecology and Environmental Sciences by considering relevant environmental elements such as air, water, soil, oceans, forests, as well as potential environmental impacts because of human activities such as environmental pollution and climate change, coming to Green, Nano- and Space Technologies, as well as to the use of renewable energy resources, all of them being interconnected by modern Management Tools. Space activities must be mentioned in the context of designing new technologies for researching our planet and Outer Space with its many celestial bodies, what means activities for planetary exploration. On the other side using space activities for getting human sustainability also means setting up regional and global emergency programs to support disaster response operations through the provision of satellite data being oriented to reduce disaster risks. With the vision of getting Earth and Planetary Insights for improving humanity quality of life, holistic thinking is per-se required, and in this context connected chances and challenges will be debated with the goal of assuring human sustainability. Developments on global level have emphasized that it depends on our mutual work and cooperation to prevent the increasing processes of current resources consumption from compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Abstract:Pollution issues, anthropogenic climate change, and biodiversity declines, formerly local in scope, accumulate to threaten crossing planetary boundaries and tipping Earth’s system to an uninhabitable state. The human-environment identity is an unsung cornerstone of geography that can educate upcoming generations of citizens about trends over time, current conditions, and pathways to a more desirable future. The geography education community should develop and apply human-environment thinking through tools like timelines and big ideas. We hope the geographic thoughts presented herein will provide a scholarly rationale for K-12 educators to consider as they design curricula to share human-environment geography with students.

Abstract:This paper examines the recent advances and applications of AI in human geography especially the use of machine (deep) learning, including place representation and modeling, spatial analysis and predictive mapping, and urban planning and design. AI technologies have enabled deeper insights into complex human-environment interactions, contributing to more effective scientific exploration, understanding of social dynamics, and spatial decision-making. Furthermore, human geography offers crucial contributions to AI, particularly in context-aware model development, human-centered design, biases and ethical considerations, and data privacy. The synergy beween AI and human geography is essential for addressing global challenges like disaster resilience, poverty, and equitable resource access. This interdisciplinary collaboration between AI and geography will help advance the development of GeoAI and promise a better and sustainable world for all.

Abstract:The 20th century witnessed the rise of social physics: the application of models and techniques developed for physical processes to social phenomena. Social physics left an enduring legacy in human geography via its stepchildren, spatial analysis and GIS, shifting geography from microgeography (description-seeking) and towards macrogeography (law-seeking). Social physics is back in the 21st century, and its renaissance with a concurrent rise in computational and data-driven approaches to science and policy raises a wide range of concerns, including the claim that this is just macrogeography writ large: a single-minded pursuit of social laws at the cost of treating people as particles and spatial context as abstract and sterile. I argue that this time is different: a more sophisticated social physics, spatial analysis and GIScience are emerging that emphasize heterogeneity and spatial context as key drivers of interesting behavior. I also argue that new social physics suggests another path to geographic knowledge somewhere in the middle: mesogeography – a focus on how processes evolve in spatial context. I discuss GIScience techniques and approaches that can facilitate the quest for mesogeographic knowledge.

Abstract:Even as it remains an informal term defining the emergence of humans as a force transforming Earth as a system, the Anthropocene is stimulating novel research and discussion across the academy and well beyond. While geography has always been deeply connected with the coupled human–environment paradigm, physical geographer’s embrace of the Anthropocene still appears lukewarm at best. While there are good reasons to hesitate, including the fact that the Anthropocene is not yet, and might never be, formalized in the Geologic Time Scale, physical geographers have much to gain by embracing what is rapidly becoming the most influential scholarly discussion on human–environmental relations in a generation. This editorial was commissioned for the author’s debut as Contributing Editor of Progress in Physical Geography.

Abstract:Amidst an unfolding environmental crisis, suspicion about the totalising and homogenising spatial grammars of the ‘Anthropocene’ has spurred the development of a new spatial concept which, its proponents hope, can better ground the science and politics of environmental change in local geographies. In this second report on science and technology, I use this concept as a lens onto recent work in geography concerned with the space-times of ‘environmental’ sciences and technologies, broadly construed. The notion of the ‘critical zone’, and the practice of ‘critical zone science’, directs our attention to geographical work on situated practices of interdisciplinarity, on new modes of producing and working with ‘big data’, and on the volumetric, vertical and subterranean spaces of technoscientific practice. Emerging research has also engaged with the technologisation of critical zone management, while new insights into ‘lively capital’ and nonhuman labour push us to see the critical zone not just as an increasingly technologised space, but as itself a technology of human autopoiesis. Amidst the febrile politics of sustaining this planetary living-system, new questions are being asked about what it means to be critical in the critical zone.

Abstract:This first report explores how understandings of human trafficking have progressed within population geography. Exemplified by studies of exploitative labour migration, population geography has made implicit contributions by stressing the value of a geographic perspective on the webs of interconnections and links between different places and trafficking. In addition, dominant ideas of linear trafficking processes have been disrupted, via evidencing the informal involvement of families in the phases of recruitment, transportation, and control. I argue that a more encompassing, interdisciplinary tenet could be woven into population studies of trafficking, by more explicitly engaging with social science debates. Embedding the legal, global definition of trafficking into wider studies of migration is paramount for this direction of travel. There is also merit in population geography advancing understandings by adopting holistic lenses of enquiry, connecting-up with (sub-)disciplinary geographic studies of migration and trafficking in the Global South and Global North. Studies of trafficking provide a potentially fruitful terrain for population geography to deliver multidisciplinary, impactful research of a key global challenge, to inform policies to prevent and mitigate the ills of trafficking, and progress conceptual and theoretical understandings of trafficking.
