Abstract:Long chain branched polydimethylsiloxane-g-polyethylene (PDMS-g-PE) copolymers were synthesized by hydrosilylation reaction between polymethylhydrosiloxane and vinyl terminated PE macromonomer. The structure and properties were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR), high temperature gel permeation chromatography (HT-GPC) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The effect of the hydrogen content of polymethylhydrosiloxane on the copolymer structure and properties was investigated. It was found that the molecular weight of PDMS-g-PE increased with the hydrogen content of polymethylhydrosiloxane since more PE macromonomers were grafted onto the polydimethylsiloxane main chains. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of PDMS-g-PE was extremely low, indicating the excellent molecular chain flexibility. PDMS-g-PE with more PE branched chains showed higher melting temperature (Tm) and higher melting enthalpy (ΔHm). PDMS-g-PE was used as flow modifier for HDPE. When 2% PDMS-g-PE was added to HDPE, the melting flow rate (MFR) increased by 21%, the elongation at break improved significantly and the impact strength improved a little, while the tensile strength and elastic modulus decreased slightly.

Abstract:In order to regulate the properties of EPDM oil‐absorbing rubber, a micro‐nano porous structure was formed in EPDM rubber through the graft modification of α‐olefin, which provided a good condition for oil absorption. Moreover, the introduction of α‐olefin did not destroy the original properties of EPDM. This study also provides support for the future development of high‐performance oil‐absorbing rubber. To regulate the comprehensive performance of ethylene‐propylene‐diene monomer (EPDM)‐based oil‐absorbing expandable rubber, a series of irradiated α‐olefin‐EPDM7001 rubbers (EOR7001‐X‐Y) are prepared. The influence of the carbon chain length and content of α‐olefins on the structure and properties of the rubber is systematically investigated. Results show that EOR7001‐X‐Y possesses a cross‐linked network structure, and its gel fraction decreases gradually with the increase in carbon chain length and content of α‐olefins. The incorporation of α‐octadecene successfully creates micro‐nanoscale porous structures within the rubber matrix, providing favorable conditions for oil absorption. The introduction of α‐olefins and changes in irradiation dose do not significantly affect the thermal stability of EPDM7001 rubber. The tensile strength slightly reduces, while elongation at break significantly increases, improving the deformation capability. EOR7001‐18‐20 demonstrates exceptional resistance to aging and withstands external forces even after oil absorption. This study supports the development of high‐performance oil‐absorbing expandable rubber.

Substrate Effect on the Formation of Hydrogels with Heterogeneous Network Structure

Abstract:It was found that when an aqueous solution of vinyl monomers is polymerized on a hydrophobic substrate, obvious heterogeneity occurs in the region of the interface. This substrate effect was observed on polytetrafluroethylene (Teflon), polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), polystyrene (PS), and polyvinylchloride (PVC), but not on hydrophilic substrates. Compared with synthesis on hydrophilic surfaces, the surfaces of hydrogels synthesized on a hydrophobic substrate exhibit a larger degree of swelling, a lower surface coefficient of friction and elastic modulus, weaker interfacial adhesion, and reduced interaction with biological cells. This substrate effect has been observed for many types of aqueous monomer solutions. It was found that the above properties are related to the loosely cross-linked architecture, containing some graft-like polymer chains, that is formed on the gel surface when the gel is prepared on a hydrophobic substrate. To understand the mechanism of the substrate effect, two novel optical methods, electric speckle pattern interferometry (ESPI) and real-time laser sheet refraction (RT-LSR), were developed. It was found that oxygen trapped in the composite interface between the monomer solution and rough hydrophobic substrates played an important role in the substrate effect.

Abstract:Polybutadiene (PB) is used to fill an oil absorption resin as a physical crosslinker to construct a kind of 3-dimensional network with a high degree crosslinking and low crosslink density. A series of acrylic resin particles with various compositions are prepared by suspension polymerization, using benzoyl peroxide (BPO) as an initiator and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as a chemical crosslinker. The effects of the polymerization temperature, initiator concentration, monomer feed ratio, and chemical and physical crosslinker concentrations on the oil absorbency and gel fraction (degree of crosslinking) are studied. The recipe and operation conditions are optimized as follows: a mass ratio of 3:1 for styrene (St)/dodecyl methacrylate or St/butyl acrylate, 0.5 wt % BPO, and 80degreesC for 7-8 h. The effect of the physical crosslinker (PB) concentration is complex. The oil absorbency increases with increasing PB at lower EGDMA concentrations. However, under this same condition, particles cannot be formed if the PB concentration is higher than a certain value. By contrast, there is an optimum PB concentration when the EGDMA concentration is higher. The oil absorption speed is also investigated. The presence of PB can speed up absorption. Abstract:The effects of the EPDMx4010/EPDM4703 blending ratio,the addition level of sulfur,peroxide vulcanizing agent and the paraffin oil on the physical and mechanical properties of vulcanizate and the oil absorption ratio were investigated.The results showed that the oil absorption ratios of EPDM4703 and EPDMx4010 vulcanizates are not very different,while the physical and mechanical properties of EPDM4703 are relatively good.With the increase of the content of sulfur and peroxide,the oil absorption rate decreased;the hardness,tensile strength,and modulus increased.However,elongation at break decreased.The oil absorption ratio will be significantly improved by the addition of paraffin oil,but the mechanical properties of vulcanizates decreased.

Abstract:The effects of the amount of FEF and paraffin oil on EPDM properties were studied by regression analysis method.The results show that the tensile strength,100% modulus and hardness increase,elongation at break and compression set decrease with FEF amounts increase.With the paraffin oil amounts increase,the tensile strength、tear strength、100% modulus and hardness decrease;elongation at breaks and compression set improve.The mathematics models obtained in this work can describe the relationship between the properties of EPDM compound and amounts of FEF and paraffin oil accurately.

Abstract:The curing characteristics,mechanical properties and oil resistant performance of EPDM/POE were studied.The results showed that with the increasing of POE content,the MH,ML and MH-ML decreased slightly;The mechanical properties,compression set and hardness increased significantly;The tensile strength retention and retention of elongation increased;With the incteasing of POE content,the volume change declined after soaking in oil at room temperature,while the volume change increased after soaking in oil at 100℃.

Abstract:Monodisperse mesoporous carbon spheres (MCS) were synthesized and their potential applications in ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) foam were evaluated. The obtained MCS exhibited a high specific surface area ranging from 621-to 735 m2/g along with large pore sizes. It was observed that the incorporation of MCS into EPDM foam rubber significantly enhances its mechanical properties. The prepared MCS-40 rubber composites exhibit the highest tear strength of 210 N/m and tensile strength of 132.72 kPa, surpassing those of other samples. The enhancement mechanism was further investigated by employing computer simulation technology. The pores within the MCS allowed for the infiltration of EPDM molecular chains, thereby strengthening the interaction forces between the filler and matrix. Moreover, a higher specific surface area resulted in greater adsorption of molecular chains onto the surface of these carbon spheres. This research offers novel insights for understanding the enhancement mechanism of monodisperse mesoporous particles/polymer composites (MCS/EPDM) and highlights their potential application in high-performance rubber composites.

Abstract:The concept of physical crosslinking was introduced into the research field of oil-absorption resins, which were traditionally synthesized only by chemical crosslinking. Specifically, the partially physical crosslinking acrylic series for high-oil-absorption resins were prepared in the suspension process, and the swelling behavior of the samples was observed and recorded online. This demonstrated that a kind of relaxing three-dimensional network was indeed formed by the introduction of polybutadiene (PB). The effects of monomer feed ratios, crosslinking agent concentration and type, particle size, and temperature on the oil absorbency and oil-absorption speed were investigated. The results indicated that there were an optimum monomer feed ratio and an optimum amount of ethylene glycol dimethacrylate or PB. In addition, the particle size and temperature had a serious influence on the oil-absorption speed in comparison with the monomer feed ratio and the crosslinking agent concentration and type. The results also showed that particle size affected oil absorbency to a great degree and that the effect of temperature on oil absorbency was complex. (C) 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:Polymer coposite films of polyacetylene (PA) and various elastomers--butadiene styrene rubber (SBR), natural rubber (NR), cis-1, 4-polyb-utadiene(BR)and ethylene-proplene-diene terpolymer(EPDM)were prepared. The structures and properties of the resulting composite films shave been studied. PA in PA/elastomer composite films still showed high cis stereos-pecificity. The composite films were at least a two-phase system consisting of crystalline polyacetlene and amorphous elastomer. The PA/SBR film showed higher toughness and tentile strength and maximum extension ratio (L/L0). The composite films give higher resistance to attack by oxygen and structural stability .than PA ones. The composite films can be doped either chemically or electro-chemically. The electrical conductivity of iodine doped composite films ranges from 10 to 102Ω-1·cm-1. Iodine electrochemical doped composite films may be utilized as the cathodeactive material in the fabrication of lightweight; .rechargeable storage cell-battery. The propety of the cell-battery consisting of the PA/elastomer composite film and Li has been studied.More precise studies are now in progress.
Synthesis and characterization of poly(styrene-methacrylate) highly oil absorptive resin

Abstract:Cross-linked styrene-methacrylate highly oil absorptive resin was synthesized by suspension polymerization. The influences of alkyl methacrylate type, mass ratio of monomers, initiator dosage, crosslinking agent dosage, disperser dosage on resin properties were investigated. Suitable process conditions were: mass ratio of dodecyl methacrylate to styrene 4:3, initiator benzoyl peroxide 0.8% (mass fraction in monomer mixture), crosslinker divinylbenzene 0.8% (mass fraction in monomer mixture), disperser polyvinyl alcohol 3% (mass fraction in monomer mixture), and oil absorptive power of obtained resin is about 13.9 g/g for methylbenzene and 24.6 g/g for chloroform. Structure and properties of the resin were investigated by means of IR, SEM, TG and DSC. FTIR and SEM determinations show that the resin is styrene-dodecyl methacrylate copolymer. TG and DSC measurements show that the resin can be used at 130°C.

Abstract:Butyl acrylate copolymers with high oil-absorption were prepared in the suspension process. It is focused on the effects of initiator level, polymerization temperature and crossslinking agent concentration on the oil uptake and gel fraction of the copolymers. The type and concentration of the crossslinking agent is the main factor affecting the oil uptake, while the initiator level and polymerization temperature will also give considerable effects. Under optimized operation conditions, acrylic copolymer with toluene-uptake up to 25g/g has been synthesized.

Abstract:ABSTRACTIn this work, hydrogels were synthesized by UV photo‐polymerization of hydrophilic dextran functionalized with acrylate groups (Dex‐A) and hydrophobic acrylate epoxidized soybean oil (AESO). The acrylation of dextran was accomplished by reacting dextran (Mw 70,000 g mol−1) with acryloyl chloride and pyridine. The Dex‐A was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Five rigid hydrogels were prepared using the weight ratios of Dex‐A and AESO as 10/90, 20/80, 30/70, 40/60, and 50/50. The hydrogels were characterized by FTIR, thermal gravimetric analyses (TGA) and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM). The experimental results demonstrated that the swelling and release profiles of the Dex‐A/AESO hydrogels can be tailored by varying the ratio of Dex‐A and AESO thus varying the balance of hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity of the network structures and the crosslinking density. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:The effects of the raw rubber variety,curing system,filling systems and processing aids and other factors on the abrasion of EPDM were studied.The results of experiments show that with high ethylene content and Mooney viscosity non-oil-filled EPDM as raw rubber,sulfur/sulfur carrier as curing system,carbon black(N220) and Si 69 modified fumed silica(AS-200) as filler,plus 0.5 phr smooth powder,the abrasion of EPDM is improved.

Abstract:Bifunctional reactive polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) of 3, 13-divinyl octyphenyl silsesquioxane (DV-DDSQ) and 3, 13-dihydro octyphenyl silsesquioxane (DH-DDSQ) were used as additive to modify ethylene-propylene-diene rubber (EPDM), and double vinyl groups or active hydrogen groups of bifunctional reactive POSS (brPOSS) underwent a cross-linking reaction with the active hydrogen groups and double bonds of EPDM, to investigate the effect of brPOSS regulating functional reaction group on the properties of EPDM. Crosslinking density, mechanical properties, thermal stability and ablation performance of brPOSS modified EPDM were investigated, and the pyrolysis behavior and surface structure of modified EPDM was analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Furthermore, the ablation performance of brPOSS modified insulation based on EPDM was investigated. The results showed that the tensile strength of EPDM/DV-DDSQ and EPDM/DH-DDSQ increased by 35.8% and 55.3% respectively compared with EPDM; the tear strength increased by 6.4% and 5% than that of EPDM. Moreover, the 5% initial thermal decomposition temperature based on thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and mass (or linear) ablation rate ablative performance of brPOSS modified EPDM were optimized to a certain extent, and the ablative performance of brPOSS modified insulation based on is significantly improved, the mass ablation rate of DV-DDSQ/insulation and DH-DDSQ/insulation decreased by 35.4% and 41.6% respectively, and linear ablation rate decreased by 38.2% and 39.4% respectively.

Abstract:EPDM-graft-methyl methacrylate and styrene (EPDM-g-MS) were synthesized by solution graft copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and styrene (St) onto ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer (EPDM). EPDM-g-MS/MS resin blends (MES) tht were prepared by melt blending EPDM-g-MS and methyl methacrylate-styrene copolymer (MS resin). The mechanical properties, compatibility, thermal stabilities and rheological properties of MES were studied by the pendulum impact tester and the tension tester, differential scanning calorimetric (DSC), thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), and the capillary rheometry, respectively. The results showed that EPDM-g-MS had an excellent toughening effect on MS resin; the notched Izod impact strength of MES reached 20.7 kJ/m2 when EPDM content in MES was 25 wt%, about 14 times that of MS resin. EPDM-g-MS and MS resin were partially compatible, and the compatibility increased with an increasing MMA/St ratio of EPDM-g-MS. MES had excellent heat-resistance, which increased as the EPDM content in MES and MMA/St ratio of EPDM-g-MS rose. MES melt flow confirmed pseudoplastic flow characteristics. The apparent viscosity (a) of MES decreased with an increasing shearing rate () and temperature, but increased with an increasing EPDM content in MES and MMA/St ratio of EPDM-g-MS. The flow activation energy of MES was lower than that of MS resin.
Constituent compatibility and physical properties of bio‐based EUG/EPDM blends

Abstract:In this study, HMEUG/EPDM blend (20/80) shows a certain degree of incompatibility and LMEUG/EPDM blend (20/80) exhibits satisfied compatibility, poor compatibility occurs while EUG occupies 30 wt%. The blends show superior tensile strength, toughness, rebound resilience and wear resistance under better constituents compatibility, particularly LMEUG/EUG blends. Eucommia ulmoides gum (EUG)/ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) blends were prepared using EUG with high and low molecular weight, respectively, and their physical properties and constituents compatibility were investigated. The blend exhibited superior physical properties and constituents compatibility when EUG with high molecular weight occupied 10 wt%. When its content increased further, the physical properties deteriorated gradually,the results of SEM, DSC, and DMA diagrams indicated poorer constituents compatibility. The blends prepared from EUG with low molecular weight can achieve better compatibility in a comprehensive range of blending ratio. When the EUG content was 20 wt%, the maximum tensile strength of the blend was observed, which was 49.9% higher than that of pure EPDM, its rebound resilience ascended by 5%, and the wear resistance remained nearly unchanged.

Abstract:This article reports on a novel route to develop ethylene-propylene-diene rubber (EPDM)/montmorillonite nanocomposites Modification of the MMT was carried out with maleic anhydride (MA), which acts as the intercalation agent for MMT and the vulcanizing agent for EPDM matrix, as well as the compatibilizer for the EPDM and MMT phases. The effect of MA-modified MMT in nanocomposites was investigated by focusing on three major aspects: structural analysis, thermal properties, and material properties. The d-spacings of both the MA modified MMT and exfoliated nanocomposites were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the morphology of these nanocomposites was examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Dynamic mechanical analysis confirms the constraint effect of exfoliated MMT layers on EPDM chains, which benefited the increased storage modulus, increased glass transition temperature. Thermogravimetric analysis indicates that there is some enhancement in degradation behavior between the nanocomposites and EPDM matrix. The nanocomposites exhibit great improvement in tensile strength and modulus, as well as elongation-at-break. The effects of MA addition on the formation of nano-metric reinforcement and on the mechanical properties of nanocomposites are discussed. (c) 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:Crosslinked copolymers for oil absorption were synthesized by copolymerizing styrene (St) with lauryl acrylate (LA), with ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as cross-linking agent. Suspension polymerization was conducted using benzoyl peroxide as initiator. The crosslinking reaction mechanism and the structure of the composite were characterized by FT-IR analysis. Effects of different polymerization conditions were studied through oil absorption tests. The oil absorbency was influenced mainly by the degree of crosslinking and the LA/St ratio. Optimal oil absorbency was obtained for St/LA = 1. The absorbency of copolymers was higher for the aromatic series by the affinity investigation toward different organic solutions.

Abstract:The influence of different mixing processes on material properties. Compared to the traditional open mixing process used for the production of the rubber composites, wet mixing process is a lower shear force mixing method. This article revealed the influence of the open mixing process and the wet mixing process on the microstructure, density, mechanical properties, and ablation performance of ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubber/fiber/hollow glass microsphere composite system. The results showed that the wet mixing process increased the fiber length by more than 300% compared to the open mixing process, while the fragmentation rate of the hollow glass beads was reduced by 94.4%, these effectively maintained the structural integrity of the fibers and the hollow glass microsphere filler. By using the wet mixing process, the density of EPDM composite materials can be reduced by about 20%, and the tensile strength and ablation resistance of these composites were also significantly improved. Compared to polyimide fiber and aramid fiber short fibers, the wet mixing process of solution‐based rubber had a more significant effect on improving the length and ablation resistance of phenolic fiber and carbon fiber fibers which having poor shear strength.
