Abstract:<p>Natural hazards such as earthquakes, hurricanes, and floods cause billions of dollars of economic loss and claim thousands of lives every year. Researchers have proposed various tools and techniques to evaluate, manage, and mitigate seismic risk and improve resilience. Nonetheless, given the uncertainties involved, accurate system assessment requires real-time data on structural health and performance which can be attained through structural health monitoring (SHM) systems. This paper integrates component-based resilience quantification methods and SHM techniques to present a new probabilistic framework for seismic structural system evaluation and decision analysis. A trilateral framework is introduced which (1) uses the data obtained from a localized wireless sensor network to detect and locate damage, (2) develops component-based functionality curves to quantify the seismic resilience of the structure, and (3) makes post-quake rapid decisions based on a multi-criteria safety evaluation method. A nonlinear autoregressive exogenous (ARX) model is used to identify structural response and a statistical damage-sensitive coefficient is used to detect, locate, and measure damage in the system. Minor damages due to corrosion and major damages due to past extreme events are studied in the functionality analysis. Two groups of archetype building structures located in a high seismic region are studied, namely steel diagrid and special reinforced concrete structures. The results show that maximum absolute floor acceleration is the most accurate demand parameter for locating damage whereas maximum floor displacement and interstory drift ratio can effectively detect and measure damages.</p>

Abstract:In the process of building earthquake-resistant structures and/or retrofitting vulnerable existing structures, seismic analysis is a method for estimating structural reaction. The problem is tough in principle. Because the structural response to big earthquakes is dynamic, nonlinear, and random. In structural engineering, all three features are exceptional, as most problems are (or can be effectively approximated as) static, linear, and predictable. Many existing RCC buildings in seismic zones are inadequate to withstand earthquakes due to rapid urbanization and the development of a high number of multi-story buildings. And also since different foundation types are adopted based on different structural, soil requirement, it is important to analyze the response of structure with different foundation types.
Multi-objective optimal seismic design of buildings using advanced engineering materials

Abstract:Previous studies have addressed the design and assessment of buildings under seismic loading considering a single societal level objective, namely, safety. Seismic design codes and regulations also center on this objective. A seismic design framework that concurrently addresses the societal-level objectives of safety, economy and sustainability using consistent tools at every component of the analysis is presented. A high-performance material; namely, engineered cementitious composites (ECC) is utilized to achieve the objectives of the study. ECC is superior to concrete in many aspects, but most importantly in its properties of energy absorption, shear resistance and damage tolerance, all of which are utilized in the proposed procedure. The behavior of ECC is characterized through an experimental program at the small-scale (scale factor equal to 1/8). ECC mixtures with different cost and sustainability indices are considered. Numerical modeling of ECC is also performed to carry out structural level simulations to complement the experimental data. A constitutive model is developed for ECC and validated at the material, component and system levels.

Abstract:The structure is presumed to be situated in seismic Zones II and V. The mathematical building model (F.E.M Model) of Whole building has been modelled in ETABS 16.2 All the beams and columns are modelled as frame elements. All the slabs are modelled as thin shell elements. To ascertain the seismic load on each floor level of whole structure two types of seismic analysis procedure have been considered as per IS1893-2002 and 2016. Equivalent static approach (linear Static method) and Response spectrum method (Linear Dynamic Method). Parameters considered to understand the seismic response of the multi-storeyed buildings are, Modal Mass participation factor, Modal time period, Lateral displacement, Storey drift, Storey shear of the structure. The whole structural systems are strengthen with vertical shear walls. SAFE (Slab analysis by Finite Element Method) is a software essentially made for analyse and designs of the slabs, since Pile Raft is also a slab therefore SAFE is the ultimate tool for it. Pile Caps have modelled as Slab with Thick plate Action, for base reactions Link between ETABS and SAFE have been used. The parameters consider for finalise the designs of piles and pile caps are, vertical settlement, Punching Shear stress under columns and shear walls and for piles as well. Flexural reinforcements are tabulated in both Longitudinal and transvers direction for the both the faces i.e. Top face and bottom. After all the study a comparison is made between the structure situated in Zone II and Zone V We had observed that when the seismic zones changes and the intensity of seismic forces increases, the design of foundation considerably changes and there is tremendous amount of increase in steel.
The Effect of Soil-Structure Interaction on the Seismic Response of Structures Using Machine Learning, Finite Element Modeling and ASCE 7-16 Methods

Abstract:Seismic design of structures taking into account the soil-structure interaction (SSI) methods is considered to be more efficient, cost effective, and safer then fixed-base designs, in most cases. Finite element methods that use direct equations to solve SSI problems are very popular, but the prices of the software are very high, and the analysis time is very long. Even though some low-cost and efficient software are available, the structures are mostly analyzed for the superstructure only, without using the geotechnical properties of the ground and its interaction effects. The reason is that a limited number of researchers have the knowledge of both geotechnical and structural engineering to model accurately the coupled soil-structure system. However, a cost-effective, less time-consuming and easy-to-implement technique is to analyze the structure along with ground properties using machine learning methods. The database techniques using machine learning are robust and provide reliable results. Thus, in this study, machine learning techniques, such as artificial neural networks and support vector machines are used to investigate the effect of soil-structure interactions on the seismic response of structures for different earthquake scenarios. Four frame structures are investigated by varying the soil and seismic properties. In addition, varying sample sizes and different optimization algorithms are used to obtain the best machine learning framework. The input parameters contain both soil and seismic properties, while the outputs consist of three engineering demand parameters. The network is trained using three and five-story buildings and tested on a three-story building with mass irregularity and a four-story building. Furthermore, the proposed method is compared with the dynamic responses obtained using fixed-base and ASCE 7-16 SSI methods. The proposed machine learning method showed better results compared with fixed-base and ASCE 7-16 methods with the nonlinear time history analysis results as a reference.

Abstract:The objective of the current study is to propose an expert system framework based on a supervised machine learning technique (MLT) to predict the seismic performance of low- to mid-rise frame structures considering soil-structure interaction (SSI). The methodology of the framework is based on examining different MLTs to obtain the highest possible accuracy for prediction. Within the MLT, a sensitivity analysis was conducted on the main SSI parameters to select the most effective input parameters. Multiple limit state criteria were used for the seismic evaluation within the process. A new global seismic assessment ratio was introduced that considers both serviceability and strength aspects by utilizing three different engineering demand parameters (EDPs). The proposed framework is novel because it enables the designer to seismically assess the structure, while simultaneously considering different EDPs and multiple limit states. Moreover, the framework provides recommendations for building component design based on the newly introduced global seismic assessment ratio, which considers different levels of seismic hazards. The proposed framework was validated through comparison using non-linear time history (NLTH) analysis. The results show that the proposed framework provides more accurate results than conventional methods. Finally, the generalization potential of the proposed framework was tested by investigating two different types of structural irregularities, namely, stiffness and mass irregularities. The results from the framework were in good agreement with the NLTH analysis results for the selected case studies, and peak ground acceleration ( PGA ) was found to be the most influential input parameter in the assessment process for the case study models investigated. The proposed framework shows high generalization potential for low- to mid-rise structures.

An Unsupervised Machine Learning Based Ground Motion Selection Method for Computationally Efficient Estimation of Seismic Fragility

Abstract:In the context of performance‐based earthquake engineering (PBEE), response‐history analysis is currently considered an analytical tool for developing fragility curves. Typically, this involves subjecting a structural system to a large number of ground motion records (GMRs) representing seismic hazards at a site of interest and may be a time‐consuming task. To address this computational challenge, this study proposes a method for selecting a representative subset of GMRs that enables the reproduction of the fragility curve of the general GMR set. In this method, dimension reduction techniques are used to preferentially extract the principal features of earthquake intensity measures, which are applied to construct the feature space. Then, the divisive hierarchical clustering technique is applied to the feature space to obtain a subset of GMRs from the general set until the fragility curve converges. The performance of the proposed method is successfully demonstrated through various numerical examples that include a wide class of single‐degree‐of‐freedom systems and two steel‐frame buildings. The results confirm that the seismic hazard at a given site represented by a general GMR set can be covered in structural fragility estimation using a representative subset of GMRs selected based on the proposed method. The proposed method could contribute to significantly reducing the computational costs for structural fragility estimation without compromising the accuracy.

Abstract:Seismic vulnerability evaluation of existing buildings is essential to minimize the destructive impacts of earthquakes. Rapid visual screening (RVS) methods are simple and effective vulnerability assessment techniques to help quickly identify high-risk buildings for more detailed evaluations. Among various RVS methods, the Hassan–Sozen priority index (PI) is one of the simplest methods that can be used for low-rise reinforced concrete (RC) buildings. The PI relates simple, easily attainable geometric features of a building including number of stories, floor area, column area, and wall area to damageability. However, the relationship is overly simplified, and there is no absolute basis for defining damage classification boundaries that can be used to interpret the PI. Furthermore, given the lack of seismic parameters as inputs, the PI only allows for a relative evaluation of buildings in a specific region. To address these issues and develop a more broadly applicable RVS method, this study first proposes an improved PI evaluation method using machine learning techniques to define damage classification boundaries. Then, a new generalized RVS method is proposed that considers the PI input features and earthquake intensity measures to predict damage states. Data from six post-earthquake damage surveys (Duzce (1999), Bingol (2003), Nepal (2015), Taiwan (2016), Ecuador (2016), and Pohang (2017)) are used to train and evaluate the classification models. Two earthquake intensity features, modified Mercalli intensity and peak ground acceleration, are introduced to develop a new earthquake intensity aware RVS. The results of the proposed methodologies show a considerable improvement from the original PI with no judgment needed to define the damage classification boundaries.

Seismic Vulnerability Assessment of Pile Foundation in Liquefied Soil Incorporating Ground Motion Uncertainty

Abstract:Seismic design of pile foundation has given a special attention by the earthquake professionals in last decade after experiencing many failures due to moderate to severe earthquake. Dynamic soil–structure interaction (DSSI) was reported as an important phenomenon in seismic design, and however, used to explain failure mechanism of piles during past earthquakes. It is observed from past case studies that pile failures are mainly reported in liquefied ground. Hence, vulnerability assessment of pile foundation in liquefiable deposit considering different failure mechanism is important for ensuring seismic safety of pile foundation. Present study is an attempt in this direction. Vulnerability of pile foundation will be assessed by calculating probability of exceedance of serviceability limit state criteria incorporating ground motion uncertainty. The uncertainty factors considered in generating ground motions are consists of source and attenuation of earthquake, local geology and site condition and variability associated with seismic force determination. Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) technique is used for probabilistic analysis. Seismic response is obtained for soil-pile foundation-structure system using 3D finite element software, namely OPENSeeSPL (Edu version 2.7.2). The case study of Showa Bridge during 1964 Niigata earthquake is considered in present study to perform the reliability analysis. Finally, the vulnerability of pile foundation is presented in the form of fragility curves. The limited study indicates that probability of failure reaches 100% considering serviceability condition when PGA of ground motion exceeds 1.0 g. This study will help to revamp the present design guidelines of pile foundation.
A Numerical Investigation of Seismic Load Analysis for a Concrete Gravity Dam Utilizing Abaqus Software

Abstract:Current research efforts focus on ensuring the safety of extant dams against seismic loads and designing earthquake-resistant new dams. Dependable analytical procedures are essential for a safe design that can withstand the forces induced by earthquakes. In this research, the Pine Flat Dam in California, United States, was subjected to modal, static, and dynamic analyses utilizing the Abaqus software to evaluate the impact of hydrostatic forces and dynamic stresses on the dam, taking into account flexible foundations. Using the vertical component and the horizontal component Taft Lincoln School Tunnel earthquake data, dynamic linear and nonlinear performance for concrete gravity dam were conducted. The results obtained from the nonlinear analysis exhibited a noteworthy decrease in the highest primary stress at the heel of the concrete dam, dropping from 3.17 MPa to 1.31 MPa. Conversely, no variation was observed in the minimum principal stress. In addition, the dam's maximum principal stress has shifted from its base to its neck. The findings from these analyses can contribute to enhancing new dam designs and evaluating seismic safety for existing dams. This study highlights the importance of accurate analytical procedures in ensuring dam safety and provides significant observations regarding the behavior of concrete dams during earthquake loading.

Abstract:Offshore earthquakes and subsequent tsunamis pose significant risks to many coastal populations worldwide. This paper introduces a data‐driven machine learning model that synthesizes accurate 3D earthquake–tsunami fragility surfaces from randomly selected 2D fragility curves. The integration of physics‐based simulations enhances the model's reliability for these specific hazards, making it a valuable tool for multi‐hazard analysis in earthquake–tsunami contexts. Additionally, by shifting 2D fragility curves to represent retrofitted structural systems, the model can generate earthquake–tsunami fragility surfaces for community‐level mitigation studies. While the model is demonstrated for earthquake–tsunami scenarios, its methodology architecture has the potential to contribute to other multi‐hazard situations for the initial conditions in multi‐hazard community resilience analysis.

Abstract:Recent seismic events that took place during the past two decades and struck densely populated areas caused significant material losses and, sometimes, casualties. Taking into account the ageing of the building stock around the world coupled with unavoidable degradations, urgent measures need to be taken to either strengthen or retrofit such structures based on data obtained from analytical, experimental or numerical investigations. The present paper presents the results of numerical simulations, using time-history analyses, on a scaled-down reinforced concrete (RC) frame structure subjected to two multidirectional seismic scenarios. The obtained results are discussed from the point of view of maximum displacements, accelerations and equivalent stresses. Considering the dynamic characteristics of the model, neither considered seismic event were able to produce large lateral displacements or accelerations. Damages were localized at the beam-column joints in case of Turkey 2023 earthquake scenario.

Abstract:Earthquakes are major catastrophes that cause great life and economic losses to human society and environment. This paper reviews and synthesizes relevant studies, drawing from a systematic examination of 4229 articles from the Web of Science core collection (1982–2023). Employing the CiteSpace visualization and analysis tool, current research and emerging trends in seismic risk assessment are discussed and analyzed. This paper provides a holistic overview of principal contributions, knowledge sources, interdisciplinary characteristics, and principal research topics in this field. Additionally, we propose key technologies that are in urgent need of enhancement, including data availability, quantity and quality of data, interpretability of machine learning models, performance improvement of machine learning methods and application of foundation models, as well as real-time risk assessment techniques. These insights support both theoretical understanding and practical applications of seismic risk assessment and damage analysis.

Abstract:In most current seismic design on bridges, only mainshock actions are considered without incorporating the effect of mainshock-aftershock (MA) sequences and interaction soil-pile.However, a large mainshock usually triggers numerous aftershocks in a short period. This paperstudy the effect of mainshock-aftershock sequences on the behavior of interaction Soil-pile-structure system (ISPS). abeam on nonlinearWinkler foundation (BNWF) model is usingand subjected to non-linear static analysis and incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) leading finally to the fragility curves which are developed. These analyses aim to capture the collapse state of structures under aftershock events preceded by various mainshock levels. Results obtained from capacity curve, incremental dynamic and fragility curves of ISSP system.The analytical results show that in the MA sequences,for dense soil the vulnerable of mainshock-aftershock (MS-AS) loading are more damage due to mainshock loading for all diameter of the pile and the mass. For soft soil are more vulnerable to damage due to mainshock-aftershock (MS-AS) loading. But in the stiff clay the effect of mainshock-aftershock (MS-AS) loading for all the diameter of pile and for masse are neglected. Abstract:In evaluating the damage caused by earthquakes,attention has been paid in the past to ground liquefaction and displacement during or immediately after the earthquakes.For this rea-son,only the analysis of liquefaction in sandy ground during earthquakes is performed in most dy-namic analyses.However,the damage to complex ground that contains sand,silt,or clay layers and long-term settlement over several weeks or years after the earthquake cannot be ignored mainly because of the long time required for the dissipation of excess pore water pressure (EPWP)and the recovery of the ground rigidity.In this study,a multi-story car park with a steel frame is de-signed and constructed according to Japanese Architectural Building Standards.This study will in-vestigate the seismic performance of the building during and after a great earthquake that is pre-dicted to hit the central part of Japan in the near future.Special attention is paid to the differential settlement caused by liquefaction and long-term settlement after the earthquake.The analysis is performed using a 2D soil-water coupled dynamic/static finite element analysis program DB-LEAVES,considering ground-foundation-superstructure as one whole system.The program can analyze not only the static and dynamic behavior of natural complex ground but also solve soil-structure interaction problems.The applicability and accuracy of the program have been verified by many investigations.A rotational kinematic hardening elasto-plastic model called the cyclic mobility (CM)model is adopted in this analysis to describe the nonlinear behavior of cohesionless soils under both dynamic and static loadings,particularly the cyclic mobility of sand during lique-faction.With the CM model and an effective-stress-based FEM code,the mechanical behavior of soil,change of EPWP,and consolidation can be defined.The input earthquake wave is an approxi-mation of three synchronized seismic waves whose main shock lasts about 150 s with a maximum acceleration of 182 gal.Before the dynamic analysis,a static analysis considering the ground-struc-ture as one whole system is performed to determine the initial effective stress of the ground.In the dynamic analysis,an equal displacement boundary condition,sometimes called a periodic boundary condition,is used for two side boundaries to manage the energy-loss problem.In this study,a com-parison of long-pile and short-pile foundations is presented.As mentioned above,the ground be-havior is described by the CM model;in addition,the long piles and super structure are modeled as beam elements,and the short piles are modeled as elastic solid elements.The analysis shows that liquefaction occurred mainly in loose and medium dense sand layers.The long-pile foundation has a better capacity for resisting differential settlement,whereas the short-pile foundation (improved ground)has a better capacity for resisting ground liquefaction.In all cases,most of the differential settlement occurs during earthquake motion,while the post-liquefaction settlement is relatively u-niform despite its large amplitude.Therefore,serious consideration should be given not only to the liquefaction behavior of the ground during earthquake motion but also to the long-term settlement after the earthquake.

Abstract:Many studies have been performed to put quantifying uncertainties into the seismic risk assessment of reinforced concrete (RC) buildings. This paper provides a risk-assessment support tool for purpose of retrofitting and potential design strategies of RC buildings. Machine Learning (ML) algorithms were developed in Python software by innovative methods of hyperparameter optimization, such as halving search, grid search, random search, fine-tuning method, and the k -fold cross-validation, to derive the seismic fragility curve for accelerating seismic risk assessment. Proposed ML methods significantly reduced the computational efforts compared to conventional procedure of seismic fragility assessment. The prediction results can be combined with considered hazard curves for the purpose of seismic risk assessment of RC buildings. To prepare the training dataset, Incremental Dynamic Analyses (IDAs) were performed on 165 RC frames to achieve 1121184 data points. Performance indicators showed that the algorithms of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), Extra-Trees Regressor (ETR), Extremely Randomized Tree Regressor (ERTR), Bagging Regressor (BR), Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), and Histogram-based Gradient Boosting Regression (HGBR) had higher performance, which achieved acceptable accuracy and fitted to actual curves. In addition, Graphical User Interface (GUI) was introduced as a practical tool yet reliable for seismic risk assessment of RC buildings.

Abstract:Dynamic earth pressure induced by machine foundations on a neighboring retaining wall is analyzed with emphasis on factors which control the intensity and location of the design forces. The meshless local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) method is used to analyze the problem for a variety of retaining wall and machine foundation geometries. The soil medium is assumed to be homogeneous and visco-elastic. The machine foundation is idealized as a harmonic sinusoidal dynamic force often encountered in practice. A number of analyses have been made to reveal the effect of the loading frequency, the location and size of the foundation and the soil shear wave velocity on the distribution and magnitude of the dynamic earth pressure. Results indicate that there is a critical frequency and a critical location for which the passive pressure takes the maxima in the entire duration of the dynamic load.

A new approach to multi-hazard analysis

Abstract:Multi-hazard engineering is increasingly recognized as a serious worldwide concern. In this paper, the principle of multi-hazard is applied to an essential steel structure (a hospital) located in California, US. The studied structure is assumed to be exposed to a sequence of three different cascading hazards (earthquake, blast, and fire). First, non-linear time-history analyses are performed and the seismic response of the structure is evaluated. The seismic input is assumed to cause damage to the hospital’s power supply which it turns to generate an explosion. The probability of explosion is estimated accounting for the probabilities of fuel leakage, fuel concentration, and ignition. A set of twelve blast intensity levels is considered in the analysis, corresponding to the different quantity of fuel content inside the tank. Afterward, a fire hazard is generated following the explosion, whose intensity level is evaluated using the compartmental heat flux. The effect of the fire is translated into an increase in the steel’s temperature, and damage is consequently evaluated. A methodology is proposed to accumulate the cascading damage caused by multi-hazard based on the conditional probability of occurrence. This method is capable of predicting the damage severity of the structural and non-structural components with a high accuracy. The proposed multi-hazard method is considered a significant step in improving the accuracy of loss estimation and in providing risk mitigation measures within the resilience-based environment. The results obtained in this paper verify the effectiveness and the practicality of the proposed method.

Abstract:Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the co-seismic and post-seismic behaviors of an existed soil-foundation system in an actual alternately layered sand/silt ground including pore water pressure, acceleration response, and displacement et al. during and after earthquake. Design/methodology/approach - The evaluation is performed by finite element method and the simulation is performed using an effective stress-based 2D/3D soil-water coupling program DBLEAVES. The calculation is carried out through static-dynamic-static three steps. The soil behavior is described by a new rotational kinematic hardening elasto-plastic cyclic mobility constitutive model, while the footing and foundation are modeled as elastic rigid elements. Findings - The shallow (short-pile type) foundation has a better capacity of resisting ground liquefaction but large differential settlement occurred. Moreover, most part of the differential settlement occurred during earthquake motion. Attention should be paid not only to the liquefaction behavior of the ground during the earthquake motion, but also the long-term settlement after earthquake should be given serious consideration. Originality/value - The co-seismic and post-seismic behavior of a complex ground which contains sand and silt layers, especially long-term settlement over a period of several weeks or even years after the earthquake, has been clarified sufficiently. In some critical condition, even if the seismic resistance is satisfied with the design code for building, detailed calculation may reveal the risk of under estimation of differential settlement that may give rise to serious problems.
