Abstract:Liquid-phase synthesis (LPS) of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), where substrates with metal catalysts are electrically heated in organic liquids, is cost-effective and suitable for mass production. So far, a few groups have reported multi-walled CNT (MWCNT) growth by LPS, but single-walled CNTs (SWCNTs) have never been effectively synthesized by this method. In this study, using Co and Ir nanoparticles as catalysts, we succeeded in growing SWCNTs on SiO 2 /Si substrates by LPS using ethanol as feedstock. By optimizing the amount of catalysts, web-like SWCNTs were successfully grown at 700 °C on SiO 2 /Si substrates with Co catalysts. The G/D ratios in the Raman spectra for SWCNTs grown under optimal growth conditions with Co catalysts were greater than 15, indicating that the crystalline quality is comparable to that of SWCNTs grown by conventional chemical vapor deposition. Using Ir catalysts, web-like SWCNTs with diameters less than 1.0 nm were also successfully grown at 700 °C, indicating that Ir catalysts were effective in obtaining small-diameter SWCNTs in LPS. Our results demonstrate that LPS is an effective growth technique for obtaining SWCNTs.
