Abstract:Efficient and selective molecular syntheses are paramount to inter alia biomolecular chemistry and material sciences as well as for practitioners in chemical, agrochemical, and pharmaceutical industries. Organic electrosynthesis has undergone a considerable renaissance and has thus in recent years emerged as an increasingly viable platform for the sustainable molecular assembly. In stark contrast to early strategies by innate reactivity, electrochemistry was recently merged with modern concepts of organic synthesis, such as transition-metal-catalyzed transformations for inter alia C–H functionalization and asymmetric catalysis. Herein, we highlight the unique potential of organic electrosynthesis for sustainable synthesis and catalysis, showcasing key aspects of exceptional selectivities, the synergism with photocatalysis, or dual electrocatalysis, and novel mechanisms in metallaelectrocatalysis until February of 2021.Organic electrosynthesis has unique potential and showcases exceptional selectivities, synergism with photocatalysis, or dual electrocatalysis, and novel mechanisms in metallaelectrocatalysis.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:The full control of redox events is of utmost importance to key aspects of molecular synthesis. As a consequence, chemists have recognized the power of electrochemistry for more than a century to govern electron movements for chemical transformations. Despite numerous benefits associated with electrosynthesis, electrical-current-enabled organic transformations have remained for decades largely dormant in academia and industry. However, organic electrosynthesis has recently experienced a considerable renaissance in terms of implementing electrochemical strategies in the synthetic arsenal. To illustrate this unique potential, we have selected four recent representative examples of contemporary organic electrosynthesis that have attracted major attention toward a toolbox for sustainable synthetic chemists.

Abstract:Electrochemical synthesis presents a facile and sustainable strategy to produce valuable molecules. This review summarizes the most recent advances in electrosynthesizing value-added compounds with inorganic small molecules. While "small molecules" refers to a broad spectrum of chemicals, we mainly focus on the electrochemical conversion of CO 2 , H 2 O/D 2 O, NH 3 and SO 2 until March 2024. This review intends to compare the results and display general trends throughout the field, with an emphasis on the substrate scope and mechanical aspect. Furthermore, we propose several techniques and protocols that can enable a more fundamental understanding of the electrochemical reaction involving inorganic small molecules and help drive this methodology toward commercialization.

Abstract:Electrochemical methods are environmentally friendly and have unique advantages in the synthesis of organic chemicals. However, their implementation is limited due to the complex transport problems posed by traditional electrochemical reactors. Recently, the application of microreaction technology in electrosynthesis studies has reduced the transport distance of ions and increased the specific surface area of electrodes, leading to efficient, successive, and easily scaled-up electrosynthesis technologies. In this review article, engineering advantages of using microchannels in electrosynthesis are discussed from process enhancement perspective. Flow patterns and mass transfer behaviors in recently reported electrochemical microreactors are analyzed, and prototypes for the reactor scale-up are reviewed. As a relatively new research area, many scientific rules and engineering features of electrosynthesis in microreactors require elucidation. Potential research foci, considered crucial for the development of novel electrosynthesis technology, are therefore proposed. (C) 2021 THE AUTHORS. Abstract:The use of electricity instead of stoichiometric amounts of oxidizers or reducing agents in synthesis is very appealing for economic and ecological reasons, and represents a major driving force for research efforts in this area. To use electron transfer at the electrode for a successful transformation in organic synthesis, the intermediate radical (cation/anion) has to be stabilized. Its combination with other approaches in organic chemistry or concepts of contemporary synthesis allows the establishment of powerful synthetic methods. The aim in the 21st Century will be to use as little fossil carbon as possible and, for this reason, the use of renewable sources is becoming increasingly important. The direct conversion of renewables, which have previously mainly been incinerated, is of increasing interest. This Review surveys many of the recent seminal important developments which will determine the future of this dynamic emerging field.

Abstract:Organic electrosynthesis has emerged as a unique platform for chemical manufacturing owing to not only the use of electricity as a green reagent, but especially, to its distinct reactivity. While conventional solvents are sought to remain inert and solely provide a liquid environment for the electrochemical process to occur, fluorinated alcohol solvents have been shown to redefine this concept. In fact, the singular properties of these solvents allow them to actively interact with the substrates and reaction intermediates driving dramatic changes in the chemo- and regio-selectivity as well as on the reaction yields. Given the rapid permeation of these solvents in the burgeoning field of electro-organic synthesis, this mini-review strives to provide a concise but up-to-date critical revision for the growing community of scientist working at the interface of synthetic chemistry and electrochemistry. Here, the main electrosynthetic transformations where they have been exploited besides their key role at activating certain reaction pathways will be highlighted. Finally, a forward-looking perspective on the more practical evolution and implementation of these systems will be discussed.

Abstract:Herein, we reported an efficient and straightforward method to realize desaturated β-C(sp3)-H sulfonylation and phosphonylation of cyclic amines driven by electrochemistry using catalytic amounts of CP2Fe as the redox mediator. This protocol which had good functional group compatibility, provided the desired enaminyl sulfone and enaminyl phosphine oxide products with high chemo- and regio-selectivity under mild conditions. Several mechanistic studies have suggested that cyclic amines underwent multiple single-electron oxidation and deprotonation processes, followed by a capture step involving either a sulfonyl radical or a phosphonyl radical, ultimately leading to the desired products.

Abstract:In this review, the most recent advances in synthesizing value‐added chemicals by heterogeneous catalysis are summarized, and an overview of electrocatalytic oxidation and reduction processes as well as paired electrocatalysis is also provided. Electro‐organic synthesis has attracted a lot of attention in pharmaceutical science, medicinal chemistry, and future industrial applications in energy storage and conversion. To date, there has not been a detailed review on electro‐organic synthesis with the strategy of heterogeneous catalysis. In this review, the most recent advances in synthesizing value‐added chemicals by heterogeneous catalysis are summarized. An overview of electrocatalytic oxidation and reduction processes as well as paired electrocatalysis is provided, and the anodic oxidation of alcohols (monohydric and polyhydric), aldehydes, and amines are discussed. This review also provides in‐depth insight into the cathodic reduction of carboxylates, carbon dioxide, CC, C≡C, and reductive coupling reactions. Moreover, the electrocatalytic paired electro‐synthesis methods, including parallel paired, sequential divergent paired, and convergent paired electrolysis, are summarized. Additionally, the strategies developed to achieve high electrosynthesis efficiency and the associated challenges are also addressed. It is believed that electro‐organic synthesis is a promising direction of organic electrochemistry, offering numerous opportunities to develop new organic reaction methods.

Abstract:Trioxygenation is a highly effective method for rapidly increasing molecular complexity by incorporating three C–O bonds from simple, readily available raw materials. In this study, we present an electrochemical trioxygenation protocol for allylarenes, which enables the synthesis of a diverse array of triacetoxylation products without external chemical oxidants. These products, which are difficult to obtain through conventional methods, highlight the potential of electrochemistry in promoting sustainable synthesis. Abstract:Electrocatalysis and photocatalysis have been the focus of extensive research efforts in organic synthesis in recent decades, and these powerful strategies have provided a wealth of new methods to construct complex molecules. Despite these intense efforts, only recently has there been a significant focus on the combined use of these two modalities. Nevertheless, the past five years have witnessed rapidly growing interest in the area of electrophotocatalysis. This hybrid strategy capitalizes on the enormous benefits of using photons as reagents while also employing an electric potential as a convenient and tunable source or sink of electrons. Research on this topic has led to a number of methods for C-H functionalization, reductive cross-coupling, and olefin addition among others. This field has also seen the use of a broad range of catalyst types, including both metal and organocatalysts. Of particular note has been work with open-shell photocatalysts, which tend to have comparatively large redox potentials. Electrochemistry provides a convenient means to generate such species, making electrophotocatalysis particularly amenable to this intriguing class of redox catalyst. This review surveys methods in the area of electrophotocatalysis as applied to organic synthesis, organized broadly into oxidative, reductive, and redox neutral transformations.

Abstract:Organoselenium compounds, a significant class of substances with applications in the biological, medicinal and material sciences as well as in modern organic synthesis, have attracted considerable attention from the scientific community. Consequently, an intriguing and trending research topic is the development of convenient, efficient, and sustainable methods for forming carbon-selenium (C-Se) bonds to access complex structures from simple starting materials. Over the last decade, electro-organic synthesis has gained recognition as a powerful and environmentally friendly tool for building chemical bonds. In particular, electrochemical selenofunctionalization of unsaturated bonds has emerged as an ideal and powerful route to obtain high-value selenylated products with reduced cost and waste. Thus, we outline recent progress in electrochemically enabled selenofunctionalization of alkenes and alkynes. The scope and limitations of these reactions and mechanisms are thoroughly discussed.

Because of their interest in many areas, the development of sustainable and green synthetic methods to access various organosulfur compounds has a high influence on the chemistry community. Electroorganic synthesis has become a very valuable methodology for the synthesis of organosulfur compounds during the last decade. The use of electrochemical technology offers a green, sustainable and safe alternative to prepare and modify such compounds. This review summarises recent developments in the preparation of organosulfur compounds such as sulfoxides, sulfones, sulfinic esters, sulfonamides, thiosulfonates, sulfonyl fluorides and sulfoximines under electrochemical reaction conditions.

Current Organic Synthesis

Abstract:In fact, electrochemical method (EC) is a specific and eco-friendly technique with several advantages over common organic synthesis methods. During EC no as such external catalysts are required to initiate the reaction, the current potential in itself acts as a catalyst. Most of the inactive organic compounds can be converted to active species by EC method. This method results in the synthesis of compounds with high yield and purity. This method is also good to be applied for the synthesis of thermally sensitive organic compounds. Such synthesis has significant selectivity and reactivity which enable the synthesis of such compounds that are not feasible while using the conventional methods. This review provides insight into the utilization of EC method in the synthesis of organic compounds and their derivatives. Various prerequisites for such synthesis have been highlighted. The EC method application for preparation of derivatives of benzofuran, and benzoxazole, oxidation of N, N, N', N'tetramethyl-1,4-phenylenediamine, 5-diethoxy-4-morpholinoaniline, organic compounds containing C=N, benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde and tetratomic Thioethers have been discussed in detail. In addition, the electrochemical synthesis of biomedical important compounds has been presented. The compounds synthesized through EC methods shows potential antimicrobial activity. Deferent researchers work to study the potential biological application of organic compounds synthesized through EC process. The anti-cancer, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and other important biological activities has been investigated.

Abstract:Organic electrosynthesis as an emerging green and advantageous alternative to traditional synthetic methods has achieved remarkable progress in recent years because sustainable electricity can be employed as traceless redox agents. To surmount the over-oxidation/reduction issues of direct electrolysis, mediated or indirect electrochemical processes are attaining remarkable significance and promoting the selectivity of products. Molecular electrocatalysts, benefiting from the easily electronic and steric modulation, suffers from readily degradation issue in most cases. Remarkably, heterogeneous catalysts have drawn more attention due to their high activity, stability, and recyclability. Hence, in this review, the most recent growth of heterogeneous catalysts modified electrodes for organic electrosynthesis were summarized, highlighting structural optimization and electrochemical performance of these materials as well as reaction mechanism. Furthermore, key challenges and future directions in this area were also discussed.

Ex situ electro-organic synthesis: A method to decouple electro- and thermochemical steps for unrestricted reaction control

Abstract:Classic in situ electro-organic synthesis with substrates added into electrolyzers often suffers from poor efficiency and restricted product selectivity tuning possibilities. The reason is that electrolysis conditions must balance requirements of both electro- and thermochemical steps during electrocatalytic reaction cascades, and additionally compromise between paired anode and cathode reactions. Hence, selective and efficient electrosynthesis remains challenging for many products, and particularly for economic co-production of anodic and cathodic products. Herein, we exemplify the method of ex situ electro-organic synthesis as an option to break such traditional compatibility barriers. The two-step process platform separates electrochemical catalyst activation steps in time and space from thermochemical substrate conversion at the activated catalyst. Thereby, ex situ electro-organic synthesis enables independent tuning of electrochemistry and organic synthesis for unique selectivity. For proof-of-concept, we demonstrate this using redox energy storage in Ni(OH)2/NiOOH anodes for selective alcohol oxidation. Specifically, in a two-step process, first bulk oxidation of Ni(OH)2 electrodes to NiOOH material is paired to H2 production by alkaline water electrolysis. Then, “charged” NiOOH electrodes are removed from the electrolyzer and used in external vessels to exemplarily oxidize benzyl alcohol under regeneration of Ni(OH)2 for another run. Free choice of reaction medium allows to convert benzyl alcohol either to benzoic acid with 99% selectivity (in water) or to benzaldehyde with 91% selectivity (in n-hexane), where classic in situ electrolysis can only produce the acid together with H2. Since NiOOH can mediate many organic conversions, this work may inspire future electro-synthesis of several previously inaccessible products.
