Abstract:Efficient and selective molecular syntheses are paramount to inter alia biomolecular chemistry and material sciences as well as for practitioners in chemical, agrochemical, and pharmaceutical industries. Organic electrosynthesis has undergone a considerable renaissance and has thus in recent years emerged as an increasingly viable platform for the sustainable molecular assembly. In stark contrast to early strategies by innate reactivity, electrochemistry was recently merged with modern concepts of organic synthesis, such as transition-metal-catalyzed transformations for inter alia C–H functionalization and asymmetric catalysis. Abstract:The full control of redox events is of utmost importance to key aspects of molecular synthesis. As a consequence, chemists have recognized the power of electrochemistry for more than a century to govern electron movements for chemical transformations. Despite numerous benefits associated with electrosynthesis, electrical-current-enabled organic transformations have remained for decades largely dormant in academia and industry. However, organic electrosynthesis has recently experienced a considerable renaissance in terms of implementing electrochemical strategies in the synthetic arsenal. To illustrate this unique potential, we have selected four recent representative examples of contemporary organic electrosynthesis that have attracted major attention toward a toolbox for sustainable synthetic chemists.

Abstract:Electrocatalysis and photocatalysis have been the focus of extensive research efforts in organic synthesis in recent decades, and these powerful strategies have provided a wealth of new methods to construct complex molecules. Despite these intense efforts, only recently has there been a significant focus on the combined use of these two modalities. Nevertheless, the past five years have witnessed rapidly growing interest in the area of electrophotocatalysis. This hybrid strategy capitalizes on the enormous benefits of using photons as reagents while also employing an electric potential as a convenient and tunable source or sink of electrons. Research on this topic has led to a number of methods for C-H functionalization, reductive cross-coupling, and olefin addition among others. This field has also seen the use of a broad range of catalyst types, including both metal and organocatalysts. Of particular note has been work with open-shell photocatalysts, which tend to have comparatively large redox potentials. Electrochemistry provides a convenient means to generate such species, making electrophotocatalysis particularly amenable to this intriguing class of redox catalyst. This review surveys methods in the area of electrophotocatalysis as applied to organic synthesis, organized broadly into oxidative, reductive, and redox neutral transformations.

Abstract:Organic synthesis chemistry plays a crucial role in supporting social sustainable development and finds widespread applications across various fields. Electrocatalysis, with its benefits of high efficiency, mild reaction conditions, controllability, and environmental friendliness, stands out as one of the most effective strategies for driving the transformation of organic substrates. In recent years, nanocrystals (NCs) and single atom catalysts (SACs) have garnered significant attention in the realm of electrocatalytic organic transformation. This article presents a comprehensive overview of the applications of NCs and SACs in electrocatalytic organic transformation. It delves into advanced catalysts for electrocatalysis of representative substrates, covering both anodic oxidation and cathodic reduction aspects, and addresses their synthesis, characterization, catalytic mechanism, and performance. The ultimate goal of this review is to serve as a valuable reference and a source of inspiration for further exploration into the development of more effective catalysts for electrocatalytic organic transformation.

Abstract:The use of electricity instead of stoichiometric amounts of oxidizers or reducing agents in synthesis is very appealing for economic and ecological reasons, and represents a major driving force for research efforts in this area. To use electron transfer at the electrode for a successful transformation in organic synthesis, the intermediate radical (cation/anion) has to be stabilized. Its combination with other approaches in organic chemistry or concepts of contemporary synthesis allows the establishment of powerful synthetic methods. The aim in the 21st Century will be to use as little fossil carbon as possible and, for this reason, the use of renewable sources is becoming increasingly important. The direct conversion of renewables, which have previously mainly been incinerated, is of increasing interest. This Review surveys many of the recent seminal important developments which will determine the future of this dynamic emerging field.

Abstract:Organic chemists have made and are still making enormous efforts toward the development of novel green catalytic synthesis. The necessity arises from the imperative of safeguarding human health and the environment, while ensuring an efficient and sustainable chemical production. Within this context, electrocatalysis provides a framework for the design of new organic reactions under mild conditions. Undoubtedly, nanostructured materials are under the spotlight as the most popular and in most cases efficient platforms for advanced organic electrosynthesis. This Minireview focuses on the recent developments in the use of nanostructured electrocatalysts, highlighting the link between their chemical structures and their resulting catalytic abilities, and pointing to future perspectives on their application in cutting-edge areas.

Abstract:Organic electrosynthesis as an emerging green and advantageous alternative to traditional synthetic methods has achieved remarkable progress in recent years because sustainable electricity can be employed as traceless redox agents. To surmount the over-oxidation/reduction issues of direct electrolysis, mediated or indirect electrochemical processes are attaining remarkable significance and promoting the selectivity of products. Molecular electrocatalysts, benefiting from the easily electronic and steric modulation, suffers from readily degradation issue in most cases. Remarkably, heterogeneous catalysts have drawn more attention due to their high activity, stability, and recyclability. Hence, in this review, the most recent growth of heterogeneous catalysts modified electrodes for organic electrosynthesis were summarized, highlighting structural optimization and electrochemical performance of these materials as well as reaction mechanism. Furthermore, key challenges and future directions in this area were also discussed.

Abstract:The rapid development of radical chemistry has spurred several innovative strategies for organic synthesis. The novel approaches for organic synthesis play a critical role in promoting and regulating the single‐electron redox activity. Among them, photoelectrocatalysis (PEC) has attained considerable attention as the most promising strategy to convert organic compounds into fine chemicals. This review highlights the current progress in organic synthesis through PEC, including various catalytic reactions, catalyst systems and practical applications. The numerous catalytic reactions suffer the high overpotential and poor conversion efficiency, depending on the design of electrolyzers and the reaction mechanisms. We also considered the recent developments with special emphasis on scientific problems and efficient solutions, which enhance accessibility to utilize and further develop the photoelectrocatalytic technology for the specific chemical bonds formation and the fabrication of numerous catalytic systems.

Abstract:In this review, the most recent advances in synthesizing value‐added chemicals by heterogeneous catalysis are summarized, and an overview of electrocatalytic oxidation and reduction processes as well as paired electrocatalysis is also provided. Electro‐organic synthesis has attracted a lot of attention in pharmaceutical science, medicinal chemistry, and future industrial applications in energy storage and conversion. To date, there has not been a detailed review on electro‐organic synthesis with the strategy of heterogeneous catalysis. In this review, the most recent advances in synthesizing value‐added chemicals by heterogeneous catalysis are summarized. An overview of electrocatalytic oxidation and reduction processes as well as paired electrocatalysis is provided, and the anodic oxidation of alcohols (monohydric and polyhydric), aldehydes, and amines are discussed. This review also provides in‐depth insight into the cathodic reduction of carboxylates, carbon dioxide, CC, C≡C, and reductive coupling reactions. Moreover, the electrocatalytic paired electro‐synthesis methods, including parallel paired, sequential divergent paired, and convergent paired electrolysis, are summarized. Additionally, the strategies developed to achieve high electrosynthesis efficiency and the associated challenges are also addressed. It is believed that electro‐organic synthesis is a promising direction of organic electrochemistry, offering numerous opportunities to develop new organic reaction methods.

Abstract:Electrocatalysis is a surface-sensitive process, in which the catalytic activity of electrocatalyst highly relates to the surface adsorption/desorption behaviors of the reactants/intermediates/products on the catalytically active sites. Surface chemical microenvironment engineering via organic molecules functionalization is a promising strategy to tune the electrocatalytic activity since it can well modify the electrode/electrolyte interface and alter the reaction pathways. In this review, we summarize the recent progress of surface microenvironment engineering of electrocatalysts induced by organic molecules functionalization, with the special focus on the organic molecule-assisted growth mechanism and unique electronic effect. More importantly, the applications of organic molecule functionalized catalysts in various electrocatalytic reactions are also systematically summarized, along with a deep discussion about the conclusion and perspective. This work will open a new avenue for the construction and modification of advanced electrocatalysts based on organic molecule-mediated interface engineering.

Abstract:The integration of transition metals as catalysts has opened new avenues for organic synthesis, including the activation and formation of diverse bonds. The combination of metal catalysis with photochemistry or electrochemistry has demonstrated enhanced reaction selectivity and reduced reliance on chemical oxidants. By harnessing the potential of organic photo-electrocatalysis, which combines photocatalysis with electrocatalysis, a wide range of efficient and sustainable synthetic transformations have be achieved. This review provides a comprehensive overview of metal catalysis in photo-electrochemical systems, discussing reaction mechanisms and offering prospects for this triadic catalytic mode.

Abstract:Organic electrosynthesis has been widely used an environmentally conscious alternative to conventional methods for redox reactions because it utilizes electric current as a traceless redox agent instead of chemical redox agents. Indirect electrolysis employing a redox catalyst has received tremendous attention, since it provides various advantages compared to direct electrolysis. With indirect electrolysis, overpotential of electron transfer can be avoided, which is inherently milder, thus wide functional group tolerance can be achieved. Additionally, chemoselectivity, regioselectivity, and stereoselectivity can be tuned by the redox catalysts used in indirect electrolysis. Furthermore, electrode passivation can be avoided by preventing the formation of polymer films on the electrode surface. Common redox catalysts include N-oxyl radicals, hypervalent iodine species, halides, amines, benzoquinones (such as DDQ and tetrachlorobenzoquinone), and transition metals. In recent years, great progress has been made in the field of indirect organic electrosynthesis using transition metals as redox catalysts for reaction classes including C–H functionalization, radical cyclization, and cross-coupling of aryl halides-each owing to the diverse reactivity and accessible oxidation states of transition metals. Although various reviews of organic electrosynthesis are available, there is a lack of articles that focus on recent research progress in the area of indirect electrolysis using transition metals, which is the impetus for this review.

Abstract:The integration of electrocatalysis with biocatalysis has recently been developed for the stereoselective synthesis of valuable compounds. This integration leverages the high efficiency and exquisite selectivity of enzymes along with the tunability of electrochemical reactions, providing a versatile approach for asymmetric synthesis with broad prospects. In this highlight, recent advances and future development directions in asymmetric synthesis that integrate electrocatalysis with biocatalysis are presented and discussed. We foresee that more valuable stereoselective transformations using this integrated strategy will be developed in the future.

Abstract:Electrochemical synthesis presents a facile and sustainable strategy to produce valuable molecules. This review summarizes the most recent advances in electrosynthesizing value-added compounds with inorganic small molecules. While "small molecules" refers to a broad spectrum of chemicals, we mainly focus on the electrochemical conversion of CO 2 , H 2 O/D 2 O, NH 3 and SO 2 until March 2024. This review intends to compare the results and display general trends throughout the field, with an emphasis on the substrate scope and mechanical aspect. Furthermore, we propose several techniques and protocols that can enable a more fundamental understanding of the electrochemical reaction involving inorganic small molecules and help drive this methodology toward commercialization.

Abstract:The electrooxidation of organics opens up an innovative way for the efficient use of electrical energy and environmentally friendly generation of high-value-added chemicals. The key challenges are the design of efficient and stable electrocatalysts and the creation of energy-efficient coupled systems. This review reports recent advances in the electrooxidation of organics. Then, the major fundamental principles of electrocatalyst design are elaborately summarized in terms of (1) improving the intrinsic catalyst activity of the catalytic site, (2) increasing the variety and number of active sites, and (3) promoting the formation of highly active intermediates. Afterward, the energy-saving and multifunctional coupling systems consisting of organic electrooxidation reaction at anode and reduction reaction at cathode are overviewed and systematically discussed. Finally, the key challenges and prospects regarding further accelerating the basic research and applied research of organic electrooxidation are briefly proposed.
