Abstract:Efficient and selective molecular syntheses are paramount to inter alia biomolecular chemistry and material sciences as well as for practitioners in chemical, agrochemical, and pharmaceutical industries. Organic electrosynthesis has undergone a considerable renaissance and has thus in recent years emerged as an increasingly viable platform for the sustainable molecular assembly. In stark contrast to early strategies by innate reactivity, electrochemistry was recently merged with modern concepts of organic synthesis, such as transition-metal-catalyzed transformations for inter alia C–H functionalization and asymmetric catalysis. The combination of metal catalysis with photochemistry or electrochemistry has demonstrated enhanced reaction selectivity and reduced reliance on chemical oxidants. By harnessing the potential of organic photo-electrocatalysis, which combines photocatalysis with electrocatalysis, a wide range of efficient and sustainable synthetic transformations have be achieved. This review provides a comprehensive overview of metal catalysis in photo-electrochemical systems, discussing reaction mechanisms and offering prospects for this triadic catalytic mode.

Abstract:The rapid development of radical chemistry has spurred several innovative strategies for organic synthesis. The novel approaches for organic synthesis play a critical role in promoting and regulating the single‐electron redox activity. Among them, photoelectrocatalysis (PEC) has attained considerable attention as the most promising strategy to convert organic compounds into fine chemicals. This review highlights the current progress in organic synthesis through PEC, including various catalytic reactions, catalyst systems and practical applications. The numerous catalytic reactions suffer the high overpotential and poor conversion efficiency, depending on the design of electrolyzers and the reaction mechanisms. We also considered the recent developments with special emphasis on scientific problems and efficient solutions, which enhance accessibility to utilize and further develop the photoelectrocatalytic technology for the specific chemical bonds formation and the fabrication of numerous catalytic systems.

Abstract:The full control of redox events is of utmost importance to key aspects of molecular synthesis. As a consequence, chemists have recognized the power of electrochemistry for more than a century to govern electron movements for chemical transformations. Despite numerous benefits associated with electrosynthesis, electrical-current-enabled organic transformations have remained for decades largely dormant in academia and industry. However, organic electrosynthesis has recently experienced a considerable renaissance in terms of implementing electrochemical strategies in the synthetic arsenal. To illustrate this unique potential, we have selected four recent representative examples of contemporary organic electrosynthesis that have attracted major attention toward a toolbox for sustainable synthetic chemists.

Abstract:Electrocatalysis and photocatalysis have been the focus of extensive research efforts in organic synthesis in recent decades, and these powerful strategies have provided a wealth of new methods to construct complex molecules. Despite these intense efforts, only recently has there been a significant focus on the combined use of these two modalities. Nevertheless, the past five years have witnessed rapidly growing interest in the area of electrophotocatalysis. This hybrid strategy capitalizes on the enormous benefits of using photons as reagents while also employing an electric potential as a convenient and tunable source or sink of electrons. Research on this topic has led to a number of methods for C-H functionalization, reductive cross-coupling, and olefin addition among others. This field has also seen the use of a broad range of catalyst types, including both metal and organocatalysts. Of particular note has been work with open-shell photocatalysts, which tend to have comparatively large redox potentials. Electrochemistry provides a convenient means to generate such species, making electrophotocatalysis particularly amenable to this intriguing class of redox catalyst. This review surveys methods in the area of electrophotocatalysis as applied to organic synthesis, organized broadly into oxidative, reductive, and redox neutral transformations.

Abstract:Photocatalysis has emerged as a powerful tool to generate reactive intermediates under mild reaction conditions. The combination of photocatalysis and biocatalysis, possessing advantages of the reactivity of photocatalysts and the selectivity of enzymes, has received increasing attention for its potential to realize the green synthesis of value-added chemicals. This review provides an overview of recent progress in photobiocatalysis, including the regeneration of cofactors, generation of H2O2in situ, cascades involving a photobiocatalytic transformation, and the photoinduced enzymatic reactions inspired by the photoactive cofactor within the enzyme.

Abstract:As the breadth of radical chemistry grows, new means to promote and regulate single-electron redox activities play increasingly important roles in driving modern synthetic innovation. In this regard, photochemistry and electrochemistry—both considered as niche fields for decades—have seen an explosive renewal of interest in recent years and gradually have become a cornerstone of organic chemistry. In this Outlook article, we examine the current state-of-the-art in the areas of electrochemistry and photochemistry, as well as the nascent area of electrophotochemistry. These techniques employ external stimuli to activate organic molecules and imbue privileged control of reaction progress and selectivity that is challenging to traditional chemical methods. Thus, they provide alternative entries to known and new reactive intermediates and enable distinct synthetic strategies that were previously unimaginable. Of the many hallmarks, electro- and photochemistry are often classified as "green" technologies, promoting organic reactions under mild conditions without the necessity for potent and wasteful oxidants and reductants. This Outlook reviews the most recent growth of these fields with special emphasis on conceptual advances that have given rise to enhanced accessibility to the tools of the modern chemical trade.State-of-the-art concepts and tools in electro-, photo-, and electrophotochemistry are discussed with focuses on innovative reaction design and new technologies that will enable broader adoption.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Green chemistry serves as a standardized framework for chemists, medicinal chemists, and chemical engineers to develop methods and synthetic approaches that prioritize global sustainability. It emphasizes environmentally friendly procedures, particularly catalysis, to address issues commonly encountered in conventional synthesis methods. These issues include slow reaction rates, hazardous solvents and catalysts, and prolonged reaction durations. To overcome these challenges, green chemistry advocates for the use of environmentally friendly catalysts, sustainable solvents, and innovative techniques such as microwave and ultrasonic radiation, solvent-free procedures, grinding, and chemo-mechanical methods. In particular, green chemistry supports visible-light photocatalysis, which could be used to selectively and efficiently make and change organic compounds in mild reaction conditions. Additionally, electrosynthesis has emerged as a viable alternative to traditional methods for organic molecule synthesis. Recent advancements in green chemistry have placed a significant emphasis on photocatalytic and electrochemical technologies due to their environmental benefits. This article explores how these developments have enhanced the efficient synthesis of organic compounds. By focusing on current products and techniques, this research contributes to the advancement of environmentally friendly practices in chemistry, highlighting the potential of green chemistry methods for future organic synthesis applications.

Abstract:Organic electrosynthesis as an emerging green and advantageous alternative to traditional synthetic methods has achieved remarkable progress in recent years because sustainable electricity can be employed as traceless redox agents. To surmount the over-oxidation/reduction issues of direct electrolysis, mediated or indirect electrochemical processes are attaining remarkable significance and promoting the selectivity of products. Molecular electrocatalysts, benefiting from the easily electronic and steric modulation, suffers from readily degradation issue in most cases. Remarkably, heterogeneous catalysts have drawn more attention due to their high activity, stability, and recyclability. Hence, in this review, the most recent growth of heterogeneous catalysts modified electrodes for organic electrosynthesis were summarized, highlighting structural optimization and electrochemical performance of these materials as well as reaction mechanism. Furthermore, key challenges and future directions in this area were also discussed.

Abstract:Implementing photochemical reactions through mechanochemical methods can reduce waste generation by eliminating the need for bulk solvents. The absence of solvent results in exceptionally high concentrations of catalysts and reactants in reactions, substantially improving reaction rates and efficiency in terms of both time and energy utilization. However, the integration of mechano- and photochemical approaches is often hindered by the limited transparency of mechanochemical reaction vessels. Here we present a mechano-photoexcitation strategy that utilizes mechanoluminescent materials, in particular SrAl2O4:Eu2+/Dy3+, as internal photon sources activated by mechanical energy. We demonstrate the efficacy of this strategy in two photochemical processes: the Hofmann–Löffler–Freytag reaction and the activation of electron donor–acceptor complexes in sulfonylation reactions. Mechanistic studies confirm the radical nature of these transformations, and control experiments validate the critical role of mechano-photoactivation. By utilizing mechanical energy alone, this method eliminates the need for external light sources and enables gramme-scale photochemical transformations. Our approach represents a valuable application of mechanical energy in synthetic chemistry, providing a complementary means for integrating photochemistry with mechanochemistry. The combination of mechanochemical and photochemical approaches is often hindered by the limited transparency of reaction vessels. Now, a mechano-photoexcitation strategy is reported using mechanoluminescent materials as internal photon sources activated by mechanical energy. Harnessing Electro-Descriptors for Mechanistic and Machine Learning Analysis of Photocatalytic Organic Reactions.

Abstract:Photocatalysis has emerged as an effective tool for addressing the contemporary challenges in organic synthesis. However, the trial-and-error-based screening of feasible substrates and optimal reaction conditions remains time-consuming and potentially expensive in industrial practice. Here, we demonstrate an electrochemical-based data-acquisition approach that derives a simple set of redox-relevant electro-descriptors for effective mechanistic analysis and performance evaluation through machine learning (ML) in photocatalytic synthesis. These electro-descriptors correlate to the quantification of shifted charge transfer processes in response to the photoirradiation and enabled construction of reactivity diagram where high-yield reactive "hot zones" can reflect subtle changes of the reaction system. For the model reaction of photocatalytic deoxygenation reaction, the influence of varying carboxylic acids (substrate A, oxidation-intended) and alkenes (substrate B, reduction-intended) and varying reaction conditions on the reaction yield can be visualized, while mathematical analysis of the electro-descriptor patterns further revealed distinct mechanistic/kinetic impacts from different substrates and conditions. Additionally, in the application of ML algorithms, the experimentally derived electro-descriptors reflect an overall redox kinetic outcome contributed from vast reaction parameters, serving as a capable means to reduce the dimensionality in the case of complex multiparameter chemical space. As a result, utilization of electro-descriptors enabled efficient and robust quantitative evaluation of chemical reactivity, demonstrating promising potential of introducing operando-relevant experimental insights in the data-driven chemistry.
