Abstract:Build-up-edge (BUE), high-temperature machining and tool wear (TW) are some of the problems associated with difficult-to-machine materials for high-temperature applications, contributing significantly to high-cost manufacturing and poor tool life (TL) management. A detailed review of non-traditional machining processes that ease the machinability of INCONEL®, decrease manufacturing costs and suppress assembly complications is thus of paramount significance. Progress taken within the field of INCONEL® non-conventional processes from 2016 to 2023, the most recent solutions found in the industry, and the prospects from researchers have been analysed and presented. In ensuing research, it was quickly noticeable that some techniques are yet to be intensely exploited. Non-conventional INCONEL® machining processes have characteristics that can effectively increase the mechanical properties of the produced components without tool-workpiece contact, posing significant advantages over traditional manufacturing.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problems that this paper attempts to solve are a series of challenges encountered in the manufacturing process of difficult - to - machine materials (especially INCONEL® alloys) related to high - temperature applications. These problems mainly include: 1. **Build - up Edge (BUE)**: This refers to a phenomenon in which the workpiece material adheres to the front face of the cutting tool during the cutting process, which will lead to a shortened tool life and a decline in surface quality. 2. **High - temperature machining**: Due to its high melting point and low thermal conductivity, INCONEL® alloys are prone to generate high temperatures during machining, resulting in increased tool wear. 3. **Tool Wear (TW)**: Due to the hardness and toughness of INCONEL® alloys, tool wear in traditional machining methods is very severe, affecting machining efficiency and cost. 4. **Tool Life (TL)**: Due to the above problems, it becomes very difficult to manage tool life, increasing manufacturing costs. 5. **Surface quality and integrity**: It is difficult for traditional machining methods to obtain high - quality surface finish and good surface integrity, especially in the machining of parts with complex shapes. To meet these challenges, the paper reviews in detail non - traditional machining techniques (such as electrochemical machining, electrical discharge machining, ultrasonic - assisted machining, etc.), which can effectively improve the machinability of INCONEL® alloys, reduce manufacturing costs, and reduce the complexity in the assembly process. The paper also analyzes the progress in the field of non - traditional machining of INCONEL® from 2016 to 2023, as well as the latest solutions in the industry and the prospects of researchers. Through these non - traditional machining techniques, the mechanical properties of machined parts can be effectively improved without contacting the tool and the workpiece, thus overcoming the limitations of traditional machining methods.
