Abstract:This first text on the subject provides a comprehensive introduction to the representation theory of finite monoids. Carefully worked examples and exercises provide the bells and whistles for graduate accessibility, bringing a broad range of advanced readers to the forefront of research in the area. Highlights of the text include applications to probability theory, symbolic dynamics, and automata theory. Comfort with module theory, a familiarity with ordinary group representation theory, and the basics of Wedderburn theory, are prerequisites for advanced graduate level study. Researchers in algebra, algebraic combinatorics, automata theory, and probability theory, will find this text enriching with its thorough presentation of applications of the theory to these fields. Prior knowledge of semigroup theory is not expected for the diverse readership that may benefit from this exposition. The approach taken in this book is highly module-theoretic and follows the modern flavor of the theory of finite dimensional algebras. The content is divided into 7 parts. Part I consists of 3 preliminary chapters with no prior knowledge beyond group theory assumed. Part II forms the core of the material giving a modern module-theoretic treatment of the Clifford –Munn–Ponizovskii theory of irreducible representations. Part III concerns character theory and the character table of a monoid. Part IV is devoted to the representation theory of inverse monoids and categories and Part V presents the theory of the Rhodes radical with applications to triangularizability. Part VI features 3 chapters devoted to applications to diverse areas of mathematics and forms a high point of the text. The last part, Part VII, is concerned with advanced topics. There are also 3 appendices reviewing finite dimensional algebras, group representation theory, and Möbius inversion.

A particular emphasis is given on examples involving SU(1,1). Abstract:It is well-known that characters classify linear representations of finite groups, that is if characters of two representations of a finite group are the same, these representations are equivalent. It is also well-known that, in general, this is not true for representations of infinite groups, even if they are finitely generated. The goal of this paper is to establish a characterization of representations of finitely generated groups in terms of projective joint spectra. This approach has a clear advantage compared to character classification as it is valid for a much wider family of groups and for both finite and infinite dimensional representations. The main tool in establishing our spectral characterization is a reconstruction of an operator acting on a separable Hilbert space from the proper projective joint spectrum of the quadruple containing this operator along with a certain triple of bounded operators acting on the same space.

Abstract: Let $G$ be a real reductive group in Harish-Chandra's class. We derive some consequences of theory of coherent continuation representations to the counting of irreducible representations of $G$ with a given infinitesimal character and a given bound of the complex associated variety. When $G$ is a real classical group (including the real metaplectic group), we investigate the set of special unipotent representations of $G$ attached to $\check{\mathcal O}$, in the sense of Arthur and Barbasch-Vogan. Here $\check{\mathcal O}$ is a nilpotent adjoint orbit in the Langlands dual of $G$ (or the metaplectic dual of $G$ when $G$ is a real metaplectic group). We give a precise count for the number of special unipotent representations of $G$ attached to $\check{ \mathcal O}$. We also reduce the problem of constructing special unipotent representations attached to $\check{\mathcal O}$ to the case when $\check{\mathcal O}$ is analytically even (equivalently for a real classical group, has good parity in the sense of M{\oe}glin). The paper is the first in a series of two papers on the classification of special unipotent representations of real classical groups.

Abstract:Let G be a semisimple Lie group with a Cartan decomposition G = K exp($\mathfrak{p}$). For every finite-dimensional representation of G, there is an inner product on the representation space such that with respect to it, K acts as unitary operators, and exp($\mathfrak{p}$) acts as positive definite Hermitian operators. In this paper, we observe that similar phenomena appear for infinite-dimensional representations with real infinitesimal characters.

Abstract:Let G be one of the classical groups GL(n), U(n), O(n) or Sp(2n), over a nonarchimedean local field of characteristic zero. It is well known that the contragredient of an irreducible admissible smooth representation of G is isomorphic to a twist of it by an automorphism of G. We prove that similar results hold for double covers of G that occur in the study of local theta correspondences.

Abstract:We introduce a new approach to representation theory of finite groups that uses some basic algebraic geometry and allows to do all the theory without using characters. With this approach, to any finite group $G$ we associate a finite number of points and show that any field containing the coordinates of those points works fine as the ground field for the representations of $G$. We apply this point of view to the symmetric group $S_d$, finding easy equations for the different symmetries of functions in $d$ variables. As a byproduct, we give an easy proof of a recent result by Tocino that states that the hyperdeterminant of a $d$-dimensional matrix is zero for all but two types of symmetry.

On polynomial representations of finite groups

Abstract:By generalizing Frobenius' polynomial method to good partition algebra, we will develop new character theories for a finite group $G$. A uniform defining equations are derived for these kinds of character theories. The new character theories leads to various factorizations of the group determinant. We will show that these new character theories are equivalent to the Frobenius polynomials of the correspondent good partition algebras. In particular, the character table of a finite group $G$ can be replaced by the Frobenius polynomial of $G$ which is a kind of degenerate of the group determinant. As applications, we find a new series of invariants $p_{ijl}$ for a finite group. In particular, a finite simple group is determined by these invariants. As further applications, the degrees of all irreducible characters can also be realized as the solutions of a polynomial of $G$ and we can combine the refined McKay conjecture and part of Galois conjecture of Navarro on degrees of irreducible characters into a new general conjecture.

Abstract:When n is odd, consider the finite general linear and unitary groups of rank n, extended by the inverse transpose automorphism. There are elements in the extended groups which square to a regular unipotent element, and we evaluate the values of irreducible characters of the extended groups on these elements. Several intermediate results on real conjugacy classes and real-valued characters of these groups are obtained along the way.

Abstract:This article is an exposition of the 1967 Annals paper by Parthasarathy, Ranga Rao, and Varadarajan, on irreducible admissible Harish-Chandra modules over complex semisimple Lie groups and Lie algebras. It was written in Winter 2012 to be part of a special collection organized to mark 10 years and 25 volumes of the series "Texts and Readings in Mathematics (TRIM)". Each article in this collection is intended to give nonspecialists in its field, an appreciation for the impact and contributions of the paper being surveyed. Thus, the author has kept the prerequisites for this article down to a basic course on complex semisimple Lie algebras. While it arose out of the grand program of Harish-Chandra on admissible representations of semisimple Lie groups, the work by Parthasarathy et al also provided several new insights on highest weight modules and related areas, and these results have been the subject of extensive research over the last four decades. Thus, we also discuss its results and follow-up works on the classification of irreducible Harish-Chandra modules; on the PRV conjecture and tensor product multiplicities; and on PRV determinants for (quantized) affine and semisimple Lie algebras.

Abstract:We study a spectral problem related to finite-dimensional characters of the groups , and , which form the classical series , and , respectively. Irreducible characters of these three series are given by -variate symmetric polynomials. The spectral problem in question consists in the decomposition of characters after their restriction to subgroups of the same type but smaller rank . The main result of the paper is the derivation of explicit determinantal formulae for the coefficients of the expansion. In fact, first we compute these coefficients in greater generality - for the multivariate symmetric Jacobi polynomials depending on two continuous parameters. Next, we show that the formulae are drastically simplified in the three special cases of Jacobi polynomials corresponding to characters of the series , and . In particular, we show that then these coefficients are given by piecewise polynomial functions. This is where a link with discrete splines arises. For characters of the series (that is, of the unitary groups ) similar results were obtained previously by Borodin and this author [5], and then reproved by Petrov [39] by another method. The case of symplectic and orthogonal characters is more intricate. Bibliography: 58 titles.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth curve over a finitely generated field $k$, and let $\ell$ be a prime different from the characteristic of $k$. We analyze the dynamics of the Galois action on the deformation rings of mod $\ell$ representations of the geometric fundamental group of $X$. Using this analysis, we prove analogues of the Shafarevich and Fontaine-Mazur finiteness conjectures for function fields over algebraically closed fields in arbitrary characteristic, and a weak variant of the Frey-Mazur conjecture for function fields in characteristic zero. For example, we show that if $X$ is a normal, connected variety over $\mathbb{C}$, the (typically infinite) set of representations of $\pi_1(X^{\text{an}})$ into $GL_n(\overline{\mathbb{Q}_\ell})$, which come from geometry, has no limit points. As a corollary, we deduce that if $L$ is a finite extension of $\mathbb{Q}_\ell$, then the set of representations of $\pi_1(X^{\text{an}})$ into $GL_n(L)$, which arise from geometry, is finite.

Abstract:It is examined finite state automorphisms of regular rooted trees constructed to represent groups $GL(n,\mathbb{Z})$. The number of states of automorphisms that correspond to elementary matrices is computed. Using the representation of $GL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ over an alphabet of size $4$ a finite state representation of the free group of rank $2$ over binary alphabet is constructed.
