Most of the papers are surveys, and the volume is intended to help graduate students and researchers better understand the structures and applications of discrete subgroups of Lie groups and locally symmetric spaces. Discrete subgroups of Lie groups are foundational objects in modern mathematics and occur naturally in different subjects. This new volume presents 15 papers treating discrete groups as they occur in areas such as algebra, analysis, geometry, number theory, and topology. Most of the papers are surveys, and this volume is intended to help graduate students and researchers better understand the structures and applications of discrete subgroups of Lie groups and locally symmetric spaces.

Abstract:Let G be a semisimple Lie group with a Cartan decomposition G = K exp($\mathfrak{p}$). For every finite-dimensional representation of G, there is an inner product on the representation space such that with respect to it, K acts as unitary operators, and exp($\mathfrak{p}$) acts as positive definite Hermitian operators. In this paper, we observe that similar phenomena appear for infinite-dimensional representations with real infinitesimal characters.

Abstract:This book provides a thorough introduction to the theory of complex semisimple quantum groups, that is, Drinfeld doubles of q-deformations of compact semisimple Lie groups. The presentation is comprehensive, beginning with background information on Hopf algebras, and ending with the classification of admissible representations of the q-deformation of a complex semisimple Lie group. The main components are: - a thorough introduction to quantized universal enveloping algebras over general base fields and generic deformation parameters, including finite dimensional representation theory, the Poincaré-Birkhoff-Witt Theorem, the locally finite part, and the Harish-Chandra homomorphism, - the analytic theory of quantized complex semisimple Lie groups in terms of quantized algebras of functions and their duals, - algebraic representation theory in terms of category O, and - analytic representation theory of quantized complex semisimple groups. Given its scope, the book will be a valuable resource for both graduate students and researchers in the area of quantum groups.

Abstract:This article is an exposition of the 1967 Annals paper by Parthasarathy, Ranga Rao, and Varadarajan, on irreducible admissible Harish-Chandra modules over complex semisimple Lie groups and Lie algebras. It was written in Winter 2012 to be part of a special collection organized to mark 10 years and 25 volumes of the series "Texts and Readings in Mathematics (TRIM)". Each article in this collection is intended to give nonspecialists in its field, an appreciation for the impact and contributions of the paper being surveyed. Thus, the author has kept the prerequisites for this article down to a basic course on complex semisimple Lie algebras. While it arose out of the grand program of Harish-Chandra on admissible representations of semisimple Lie groups, the work by Parthasarathy et al also provided several new insights on highest weight modules and related areas, and these results have been the subject of extensive research over the last four decades. Thus, we also discuss its results and follow-up works on the classification of irreducible Harish-Chandra modules; on the PRV conjecture and tensor product multiplicities; and on PRV determinants for (quantized) affine and semisimple Lie algebras.

One can associate to G (or subgroups thereof) its Lie algebra, its Frobenius kernels, and the finite Chevalley group of points over a finite field. The representation theories of these structures are highly interconnected. This expository article will focus specifically on the cohomology theories of these structures and the relationships between them with the aim of highlighting a few key developments over the past 20 years and related open questions.

Abstract:Algebraic groups play much the same role for algebraists as Lie groups play for analysts. This book is the first comprehensive introduction to the theory of algebraic group schemes over fields that includes the structure theory of semisimple algebraic groups, and is written in the language of modern algebraic geometry. The first eight chapters study general algebraic group schemes over a field and culminate in a proof of the Barsotti–Chevalley theorem, realizing every algebraic group as an extension of an abelian variety by an affine group. After a review of the Tannakian philosophy, the author provides short accounts of Lie algebras and finite group schemes. The later chapters treat reductive algebraic groups over arbitrary fields, including the Borel–Chevalley structure theory. Solvable algebraic groups are studied in detail. Prerequisites have also been kept to a minimum so that the book is accessible to non-specialists in algebraic geometry.

Abstract:We initiate a systematic study of the perfection of affine group schemes of finite type over fields of positive characteristic. The main result intrinsically characterises and classifies the perfections of reductive groups and obtains a bijection with the set of classifying spaces of compact connected Lie groups topologically localised away from the characteristic. We also study the representations of perfectly reductive groups. We establish a highest weight classification of simple modules, the decomposition into blocks, and relate extension groups to those of the underlying abstract group.

Abstract:We introduce a new approach to representation theory of finite groups that uses some basic algebraic geometry and allows to do all the theory without using characters. With this approach, to any finite group $G$ we associate a finite number of points and show that any field containing the coordinates of those points works fine as the ground field for the representations of $G$. We apply this point of view to the symmetric group $S_d$, finding easy equations for the different symmetries of functions in $d$ variables. As a byproduct, we give an easy proof of a recent result by Tocino that states that the hyperdeterminant of a $d$-dimensional matrix is zero for all but two types of symmetry.

Abstract:In this article we classify the irreducible representations of finite classical groups $G$ of Lie type of rank $\ell$ with dimension at most a constant proportional to $\ell^4$ according to whether $G$ is of type $A_{\ell}$ or not. The dimensions of those representations are explicitly computed by hand. We conclude the work by addressing certain cases of the inverse Galois problem via the foregoing classification.

Abstract:Feit and Tits (1978) proved that a nontrivial projective representation of minimal dimension of a finite extension of a finite nonabelian simple group $G$ factors through a projective representation of $G$, except for some groups of Lie type in characteristic 2; the exact exceptions for $G$ were determined by Kleidman and Liebeck (1989). We generalise this result in two ways. First we consider all low-dimensional projective representations, not just those of minimal dimension. Second we consider all characteristically simple groups, not just simple groups.

LieDetect: Detection of representation orbits of compact Lie groups from point clouds

Abstract:We suggest a new algorithm to estimate representations of compact Lie groups from finite samples of their orbits. Different from other reported techniques, our method allows the retrieval of the precise representation type as a direct sum of irreducible representations. Moreover, the knowledge of the representation type permits the reconstruction of its orbit, which is useful to identify the Lie group that generates the action. Our algorithm is general for any compact Lie group, but only instantiations for SO(2), T^d, SU(2) and SO(3) are considered. Theoretical guarantees of robustness in terms of Hausdorff and Wasserstein distances are derived. Our tools are drawn from geometric measure theory, computational geometry, and optimization on matrix manifolds. The algorithm is tested for synthetic data up to dimension 16, as well as real-life applications in image analysis, harmonic analysis, and classical mechanics systems, achieving very accurate results.

Writing finite simple groups of Lie type as products of subset conjugates

Abstract:The Liebeck-Nikolov-Shalev conjecture [LNS12] asserts that, for any finite simple non-abelian group $G$ and any set $A\subseteq G$ with $|A|\geq 2$, $G$ is the product of at most $N\frac{\log|G|}{\log|A|}$ conjugates of $A$, for some absolute constant $N$. For $G$ of Lie type, we prove that for any $\varepsilon>0$ there is some $N_{\varepsilon}$ for which $G$ is the product of at most $N_{\varepsilon}\left(\frac{\log|G|}{\log|A|}\right)^{1+\varepsilon}$ conjugates of either $A$ or $A^{-1}$. For symmetric sets, this improves on results of Liebeck, Nikolov, and Shalev [LNS12] and Gill, Pyber, Short, and Szabó [GPSS13]. During the preparation of this paper, the proof of the Liebeck-Nikolov-Shalev conjecture was completed by Lifshitz [Lif24]. Both papers use [GLPS24] as a starting point. Lifshitz's argument uses heavy machinery from representation theory to complete the conjecture, whereas this paper achieves a more modest result by rather elementary combinatorial arguments.

The $L_p$-dual space of a semisimple Lie group

Abstract:Let $G$ be a semisimple Lie group. We describe the irreducible representations of $G$ by linear isometries on $L_p$-spaces for $p\in (1,+\infty)$ with $p\neq 2.$ More precisely, we show that, for every such representation $\pi,$ there exists a parabolic subgroup $Q$ of $G$ such that $\pi$ is equivalent to the natural representation of $G$ on $L_p(G/Q)$ twisted by a unitary character of $Q.$ When $G$ is of real rank one, we give a complete classification of the possible irreducible representations of $G$ on an $L_p$-space for $p\neq 2,$ up to equivalence.

Abstract:Discrete subgroups of SL(2,R) are well understood, and classified by the geometry of the corresponding hyperbolic surfaces. Discrete subgroups of higher-rank semisimple Lie groups, such as SL(n,R) for n>2, remain more mysterious. While lattices in this setting are rigid, there also exist more flexible, "thinner" discrete subgroups, which may have large and interesting deformation spaces, giving rise in particular to so-called higher Teichm\"uller theory. We survey recent progress in constructing and understanding such discrete subgroups from a geometric and dynamical viewpoint.

Abstract:section briefly reports on the result of having only nine negative fundamental discriminants with class number 1, and gives tables for the remaining 56 fundamental (32 nonfundamental) discriminants of one class per genus. The chapter then ends with a discussion on the values of the Dirichlet's L-functions at the point 1, but this will only make sense to those readers who are familiar with the class number formula and the Generalised Riemann Hypothesis. The last often chapters is on factorisation and deals with various factorisation procedures related to the theory of binary quadratic forms, such as the SQUFOF method of D. Shanks. Throughout the book there is a reasonable number of concrete examples to illustrate the theory and there is also a fair number of tabular results; but it must be added that what the author considers to be algorithms are no more than proofs of theorems, if these are given at all. There are now many good word processors for authors to prepare "camera-ready" versions of their manuscripts. This is a new found freedom, but there is also an important responsibility associated with this freedom, and authors should seek proper advice and assistance from experts until they have mastered the skilful art of typesetting. The author here uses Tr^X, the most sophisticated computer typesetting program specially designed for mathematics printing, but he has left many glaring faults such as, to name the serious ones, the erratic "baselineskips" after each displayed formula, the distraction of an unacceptably large number of hyphenated words on many pages, and the lack of use of "ties" to prevent silly breaks.
