Abstract:Fiber, an element component of textiles, biology, and devices, usually features the same composition and functions along its continuous length. Beyond traditional homogeneous structures, fiber has been expected to carry massive metastructure codes with asymmetric properties. Encoding fiber metastructures along the axial direction should reach the maximum code density to design promising axially encoded metamaterial fibers, yet this remains challenging. Here, we continuously program multiple precisely controlled axial sequencing codes in single fiber and prepared axially encoded metafibers by a microfluidic sequence spinning method. The delicate design in axial compositions breaks the fiber symmetry, encoding axially customized metastructures with tunable arrangement and wide material choice for metafibers. We initiated the axially encoded metafiber with asymmetric functions and localized properties to encompass mechanical, electrical, magnetic, and photothermal metafibers. The axially encoded metafiber extends the concept of metamaterials into fiber and fulfills the target demands of future smart textiles.

Abstract:Electrospinning (ES) enables simple production of fibers for broad applications (e.g., biomedical engineering, energy storage, and electronics). However, resulting structures are predominantly random; displaying significant disordered fiber entanglement, which inevitably gives rise to structural variations and reproducibility on the micron scale. Surface and structural features on this scale are critical for biomaterials, tissue engineering, and pharmaceutical sciences. In this letter, a modified ES technique using a rotating multi-nozzle emitter is developed and utilized to fabricate continuous micron-scaled polycaprolactone (PCL) ropes, providing control on fiber intercalation (twist) and structural order. Micron-scaled ropes comprising 312 twists per millimeter are generated, and rope diameter and pitch length are regulated using polymer concentration and process parameters. Electric field simulations confirm vector and distribution mechanisms, which influence fiber orientation and deposition during the process. The modified fabrication system provides much needed control on reproducibility and fiber entanglement which is crucial for electrospun biomedical materials.

Abstract:Multi‐material integration, such as soft elastic and stiff components, exhibits rich deformation and functional behaviors to meet complex needs. Integrating multi‐materials in the level of individual fiber is poised to maximize the functional design capacity of smart wearable electronic textiles, but remains unfulfilled. Here, we continuously integrate stiff and soft elastic components into single fiber to fabricate encoded mechano‐metafiber by programmable microfluidic sequence spinning. The sequences with programmable modulus feature the controllable localization of strain along metafiber length. The mechano‐metafibers feature two essential nonlinear deformation modes, which are local strain amplification and retardation. We extend the sequence‐encoded metafiber into fiber networks to exhibit greatly enhanced strain amplification and retardation capability in cascades. Local strain engineering enables the design of highly sensitive strain sensors, stretchable fiber devices to protect brittle components and the fabrication of high‐voltage supercapacitors as well as axial electroluminescent arrays. Our approach allows the scalably design of multi‐material metafibers with programmable localized mechanical properties for woven metamaterials, smart textiles and wearable electronics. Abstract:A variety of artificial spinning methods have been applied to produce regenerated silk fibers; however, how to spin regenerated silk fibers that retain the advantages of natural silks in terms of structural hierarchy and mechanical properties remains challenging. Here, we show a bioinspired approach to spin regenerated silk fibers. First, we develop a nematic silk microfibril solution, highly viscous and stable, by partially dissolving silk fibers into microfibrils. This solution maintains the hierarchical structures in natural silks and serves as spinning dope. It is then spun into regenerated silk fibers by direct extrusion in the air, offering a useful route to generate polymorphic and hierarchical regenerated silk fibers with physical properties beyond natural fiber construction. The materials maintain the structural hierarchy and mechanical properties of natural silks, including a modulus of 11 ± 4 GPa, even higher than natural spider silk. It can further be functionalized with a conductive silk/carbon nanotube coating, responsive to changes in humidity and temperature.

Abstract:Scalable computational modelling tools are required to guide the rational design of complex hierarchical materials with predictable functions. Here, we utilize mesoscopic modelling, integrated with genetic block copolymer synthesis and bioinspired spinning process, to demonstrate de novo materials design that incorporates chemistry, processing and material characterization. We find that intermediate hydrophobic/hydrophilic block ratios observed in natural spider silks and longer chain lengths lead to outstanding silk fibre formation. This design by nature is based on the optimal combination of protein solubility, self-assembled aggregate size and polymer network topology. The original homogeneous network structure becomes heterogeneous after spinning, enhancing the anisotropic network connectivity along the shear flow direction. Extending beyond the classical polymer theory, with insights from the percolation network model, we illustrate the direct proportionality between network conductance and fibre Young's modulus. This integrated approach provides a general path towards de novo functional network materials with enhanced mechanical properties and beyond (optical, electrical or thermal) as we have experimentally verified.

Abstract:Bioengineered spider silk block copolymers were studied to understand the effect of protein chain length and sequence chemistry on the formation of secondary structure and materials assembly. Using a combination of in vitro protein design and assembly studies, we demonstrate that silk block copolymers possessing multiple repetitive units self-assemble into lamellar microstructures. Additionally, the study provides insights into the assembly behavior of spider silk block copolymers in concentrated salt solutions.

Abstract:A nanofabrication method for the production of flexible core-shell structured silk elastin nanofibers is presented, based on an all-aqueous coaxial electrospinning process. In this process, silk fibroin (SF) and silk-elastin-like protein polymer (SELP), both in aqueous solution, with high and low viscosity, respectively, were used as the inner (core) and outer (shell) layers of the nanofibers. The electrospinnable SF core solution served as a spinning aid for the nonelectrospinnable SELP shell solution. Uniform nanofibers with average diameter from 301 ± 108 nm to 408 ± 150 nm were obtained through adjusting the processing parameters. The core-shell structures of the nanofibers were confirmed by fluorescence and electron microscopy. In order to modulate the mechanical properties and provide stability in water, the as-spun SF-SELP nanofiber mats were treated with methanol vapor to induce β-sheet physical crosslinks. FTIR confirmed the conversion of the secondary structure from a random coil to β-sheets after the methanol treatment. Tensile tests of SF-SELP core-shell structured nanofibers showed good flexibility with elongation at break of 5.20% ± 0.57%, compared with SF nanofibers with an elongation at break of 1.38% ± 0.22%. The SF-SELP core-shell structured nanofibers should provide useful options to explore in the field of biomaterials due to the improved flexibility of the fibrous mats and the presence of a dynamic SELP layer on the outer surface.

Abstract:Silkworms have been developed over thousands years to optimize folding and crystallization of fibroin under highly controlled conditions which have resulted in their efficient fiber formation. In this paper, we reconstructed the three-dimensional architecture of the spinneret of a wild silkworm Samia cynthia ricini from approximately 1000 optical micrographs of the semi-thin cross sections. The chitin plates and muscles were observed in the silk press part together with large change in the diameter of the spinneret lumen at the press part by large shear stress. This is similar to the case of the spinneret of Bombyx mori silkworm, indicating that the structural change in the silk fibroin of S.c. ricini silkworm occurs exclusively at the silk press part due to large shear stresses. Molecular dynamics (MD) calculations were then performed to study the structural change that occurs in the crystalline region of S.c. ricini silk fibroin under shear stress. Namely, using the peptide AGGAGG(A)12GGAGAG as a model of the crystalline part of the silk fibroin under different shear stresses in the presence of water molecules and followed by molecular mechanics (MM) calculation after removal of water molecules. The simulation indicates that the Ala residues in the model peptides adopt a predominantly β-sheet structure under shear stresses of above 1.0GPa.

Abstract:A new method is developed to directly spinning perfectly uniaxial fibers in an ultrafast manner. Besides, this method can tune the fibers' diameter through adjusting processing parameters such as the feeding rate of precursors. Uniaxial nylon 66 fibers prepared via this method show superior mechanical properties due to the alignment in each level of the structure.

Abstract:Filamentous bundles are ubiquitous in Nature, achieving highly adaptive functions and structural integrity from assembly of diverse mesoscale supramolecular elements. Engineering routes to synthetic, topologically integrated analogs demands precisely coordinated control of multiple filaments' shapes and positions, a major challenge when performed without complex machinery or labor-intensive processing. Here, we demonstrate a photocreasing design that encodes local curvature and twist into mesoscale polymer filaments, enabling their programmed transformation into target 3-dimensional geometries. Importantly, patterned photocreasing of filament arrays drives autonomous spinning to form linked filament bundles that are highly entangled and structurally robust. In individual filaments, photocreases unlock paths to arbitrary, 3-dimensional curves in space. Collectively, photocrease-mediated bundling establishes a transformative paradigm enabling smart, self-assembled mesostructures that mimic performance-differentiating structures in Nature (e.g., tendon and muscle fiber) and the macro-engineered world (e.g., rope).

Abstract:A general synthetic method has been developed to fabricate and assemble ferromagnetic transition metal nanofibers. By employing the novel electrospinning technique followed by subsequent heat treatment, we have successfully prepared uniform nanofibers of Fe, Co, and Ni with diameters of similar to 25 nm and lengths longer than 100 mu m. Using a specially designed fiber collector, we can conveniently assemble magnetic nanofibers into aligned arrays. The electrospun magnetic metal nanofibers have unique magnetic properties, with much enhanced coercivities relative to bulk materials. The outstanding features of this approach to get one-dimensional magnetic nanostructure are its simplicity, effectiveness, and ease of assembly. Therefore, electrospun magnetic nanofibers can potentially be used in fabrication of high-density magnetic recording, magnetic sensors, flexible magnets, and spintronic devices.

Abstract:Due to the unique spiral geometry, different functional helical fibers are fabricated to perform vital tasks, including cargo transportation, medical treatment, cell manipulation, and so on. Although microfluidic techniques are widely used to fabricate helical fibers, the problems of channel blockage and spinning instability have not been well solved, which limits the mass preparation and practical application of spiral microfibers. In addition, the spinning mechanism is simply limited to liquid rope coiling, which has little impact on the design of microfluidic devices. Here, new types of microfluidic devices, which were easy to make and exhibited excellent spiral spinning performance, were designed. It was found that adding a sleeve layer outside the inner core needle in a coaxial microfluidic device could effectively promote the stable formation of helical microfibers. This novel microchannel could fabricate helical microfibers of more than 100 m in length continuously at one time with almost no blockage or deformation, and the key parameters of the fibers could be precisely adjusted. Combined with micro-particle image velocimetry (micro-PIV) measurements, it was confirmed that the improvement in the spinning performances was mainly attributed to the emergence of a focusing flow in the presence of the sleeve layer. After loading magnetic nanoparticles, the helical microfibers exhibited excellent motion manipulation capabilities, which showed great potential for drug delivery, cargo transportation, clogging removal, etc. This new design not only realized the high-throughput fabrication of helical microfibers but also provided deeper insights into the underlying mechanisms of spiral generation and new ideas for the design of microfluidic devices.

Abstract:Producing functional soft fibers via existing spinning methods is environmentally and economically costly due to the complexity of spinning equipment, involvement of copious solvents, intensive consumption of energy, and multi-step pre-/post-spinning treatments. We report a nonsolvent vapor-induced phase separation spinning approach under ambient conditions, which resembles the native spider silk fibrillation. It is enabled by the optimal rheological properties of dopes via engineering silver-coordinated molecular chain interactions and autonomous phase transition due to the nonsolvent vapor-induced phase separation effect. Fiber fibrillation under ambient conditions using a polyacrylonitrile-silver ion dope is demonstrated, along with detailed elucidations on tuning dope spinnability through rheological analysis. The obtained fibers are mechanically soft, stretchable, and electrically conductive, benefiting from elastic molecular chain networks via silver-based coordination complexes and in-situ reduced silver nanoparticles. Particularly, these fibers can be configured as wearable electronics for self-sensing and self-powering applications. Our ambient-conditions spinning approach provides a platform to create functional soft fibers with unified mechanical and electrical properties at a two-to-three order of magnitude less energy cost under ambient conditions.

Abstract:Helical objects are among the most important and landmark structures in nature, and represent an emerging group of materials with unique spiral geometry; because of their enriched physical and chemical properties, they can have multiple functionalities. However, the fabrication of such complex helical materials at the micro- or nanoscale level remains a challenge. Here, a coaxial capillary microfluidic system, with the functions of consecutive spinning and spiraling, is presented for scalable generation of helical microfibers. The generation processes can be precisely tuned by adjusting the flow rates, and thus the length, diameter, and pitch of the helical microfibers are highly controllable. Varying the injection capillary design of the microfluidics enables the generation of helical microfibers with structures such as the novel Janus, triplex, core-shell, and even double-helix structures. The potential use of these helical microfibers is also explored for magnetically and thermodynamically triggered microsprings, as well as for a force indicator for contraction of cardiomyocytes. These indicate that such helical microfibers are highly versatile for different applications.

Abstract:Soft materials made from braided or woven microscale fibers can display unique properties that can be exploited in electromagnetic, mechanical, and biomedical applications. These properties depend on the topology of the braids or weaves—that is, the order in which fibers cross one another. Current industrial braiding and weaving machines cannot easily braid or weave micrometer-scale fibers into controllable topologies; they typically apply forces that are large enough to break the fibers, and each machine can typically make only one topology. Here we use a 3D-printed device called a "capillary machine" to manipulate micrometer-scale fibers without breaking them. The operating principle is the physics of capillary forces: as the machines move vertically, they exert lateral capillary forces on floating objects, which in turn move small fibers connected to them. We present a new type of capillary machine that is based on principles of braid theory. It implements all the possible fiber-swapping operations for a set of four fibers and can therefore make any four-strand topology, including braids, twists, hierarchical twists, and weaves. We make these different topologies by changing the pattern of vertical motion of the machine. This approach is a mechanically simple, yet versatile way to make micro- and nano-textiles. We describe the prospects and limitations of this new type of machine for applications.

Abstract:Materials with microchannels have attracted increasing attention due to their promising perfusability and biomimetic geometry. However, the fabrication of microfibers with more geometrically complex channels in the micro- or nanoscale remains a big challenge. Here, a novel method for generating scalable microfibers with consecutive embedded helical channels is presented using an easily made coaxial microfluidic device. The characteristics of the helical channel can be accurately controlled by simply adjusting the flow rate ratio of the fluids. The mechanism of the helix formation process is theorized with newly proposed heterogenerated rope-coil effect, which enhances the tunability of helical patterns and promotes the comprehension of this abnormal phenomenon. Based on this effect, microfibers with embedded Janus channels and even double helical channels are generated in situ by changing the design of the device. The uniqueness and potential applications of these tubular microfibers are also demonstrated by biomimetic supercoiling structures as well as the perfusable and permeable spiral vessel.
