Abstract:A novel metal chelate complex containing phosphorus, nitrogen and zinc (II) ion was synthesized and used as the flame retardant of low density polyethylene (LDPE). The zinc chelate complex was synthesized by reacting zinc acetate with the ligand of tetraethyl (1,2-phenylenebis(azanediyl)) bis (2-hydroxylphenylmethylene) diphosphonate (TEPAPM). The chemical structure of the target Zn-TEPAPM was confirmed by FTIR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and 31P NMR spectra. The flame retardancy and thermal behavior of LDPE containing various amount of Zn-TEPAPM were investigated by limiting oxygen index test, thermogravimetric (TG) analysis and cone calorimetry. The results show that Zn-TEPAPM can greatly increase the thermal stability, the char formation and smoke suppression ability of LDPE. The TG curves show that even when the filler content of Zn-TEPAPM is as low as 1wt% in LDPE, the onset degradation temperature of LDPE is increased from 429°C to 442°C, and the maximum degradation temperature is increased from 469°C to 488°C. Also, a reduction of 32% for the peak heat release rate (PHRR) is obtained in the cone test. Moreover, Zn-TEPAPM is demonstrated to be a very effective synergist of ammonium polyphosphate (APP). When 1wt% of Zn-TEPAPM was introduced into the LDPE/APP (mass ratio 80/19) blend, the PHRR value is reduced by 32%, compared with that of LDPE/APP blend without Zn-TEPAPM, and the char layer becomes more compact and intact.

Abstract:Zinc N,N′-piperazinebis(methylenephosphonic acid) (PPMPA-Zn) was melt blended with high-density polyethylene-g-maleic anhydride (HDPE-MA) to fabricate flame-retardant HDPE-MA/PPMPA-Zn composites. The thermal stability and flame retardancy of the composites were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and cone calorimetry. The incorporation of PPMPA-Zn did not appreciably increase the thermal stability of HDPE-MA, but the residual char content increased to 18.7% when the content of PPMPA-Zn reached 25 wt%. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy tests showed that the residual char was composed mainly of Zn(PO3)2, Zn11(HPO 3)8(OH)6 and amorphous graphite. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of samples collected after cone calorimetric tests also confirmed the formation of char in the sample with 25 wt% PPMPA-Zn loading in HDPE-MA, and the char layer acted as a compact and intact physical barrier in the condensed phase. Even at a loading as low as 5 wt% PPMPA-Zn, the peak value of the heat release rate (PHRR) was reduced by 38% compared with that of pure HDPE-MA. In contrast to other intumescent flame retardants, the introduction of PPMPA-Zn enhanced not only the flame retardancy but also the mechanical properties of HDPE-MA. For example, the yield strength and Young's modulus of HDPE-MA with 5 wt% PPMPA-Zn were 125% and 128% higher, respectively, than those of the pure HDPE-MA matrix. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Aluminum diethylphosphinate (ADP) was surface modified with the silane coupling agent KH-560, and mixed intumescent flame retardants (IFRs) were prepared with neopentyl glycol (NPG) and melamine (MEL). Then mixed IFRs and zinc borate (ZB) were compounded and added into linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) material. The morphology, composition, and structure of LLDPE/IFRs/ZB composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The maximum limiting oxygen index of LLDPE/IFRs/ZB composites is 28.7%, and the combustion grade is V-0. The thermogravimetric analysis results showed that the thermal degradation rate of LLDPE/IFRs/ZB composites decreased, and the carbon residue reached 15.3 wt% at 700 celcius. The cone calorimeter test showed that peak heat release rate (PHRR), total heat release rate (THR), peak smoke release rate (PSPR), and total flue gas output (TSP) of LLDPE/IFRs/ZB composites decreased by 52.5%, 24.7%, 30%, and 15.5%, respectively, compared with pure LLDPE, significantly improving the flame retardant and smoke suppression performances of LLDPE. The residual carbon analysis shows that the C=C and P-O-C bonds in the modified mixed IFR strengthen the carbon layer structure and form a denser intumescent carbon layer, effectively hindering flame propagation. The experimental results show that the new intumescent flame retardant is a remarkable breakthrough in both flame retardancy and smoke suppression compared with ordinary intumescent flame retardants, and is more suitable for flame retardant polymer materials than traditional intumescent flame retardants.

Abstract:An intumescent flame retardant spirocyclic pentaerythritol bisphosphorate disphosphoryl melamine (SPDPM) has been synthesized and its structure was characterized by Fourier transformed infrared spectrometry (FTIR), 1H and 31P nuclear magnetic resonances (NMR). A series of polylactide (PLA)-based flame retardant composites containing SPDPM were prepared by melt blending method. The combustion properties of PLA/SPDPM composites were evaluated through UL-94, limiting oxygen index (LOI) tests and microscale combustion calorimetry (MCC) experiments. It is found that SPDPM integrating acid, char and gas sources significantly improved the flame retardancy and anti-dripping performance of PLA. When 25wt% flame retardant was added, the composites achieved UL-94 V0, and the LOI value was increased to 38. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that the weight loss rate of PLA was decreased by introduction of SPDPM. In addition, the thermal degradation process and possible flame retardant mechanism of PLA composites with SPDPM were analyzed by in situ FTIR.

Abstract:A novel integrative supramolecular intumescent flame retardant was fabricated by self-assembly of melamine, p-aminobenzene sulfonic acid and phytic acid and was abbreviated as MAP. After chelation with Fe3+ or Zn2+, the resulted products (MAP-Fe and MAP-Zn) were melt-blended with polylactic acid (PLA) to enhance the flame retardancy of PLA. The fire performance was characterized by limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL-94 vertical burning and cone calorimeter tests. The results showed that control PLA was flammable with a low LOI of 20.4%, and it cannot satisfy any UL-94 grade for its severe ignited dripping, whilst the incorporation of 3% MAP-Zn increased the LOI to 29.2%, upgraded the UL-94 rating to V-0, and reduced the peak heat release rate by 18.7%. It was proposed that MAP-Zn mainly promoted the formation of more graphitic carbon in the char residues. In addition, the presence of 3% MAP-Zn slightly reduced the tensile strength of PLA from 64.9 MPa of the control PLA to 60.1 MPa, which met the requirements of most practical applications.

Abstract:To improve the flame retardant performance of poly (lactic acid) (PLA), a phosphaphenanthrene (DOPO) -maleimide derivative (DNPMI) was synthesized. DNPMI based PLA composites were investigated for their flame retardant, thermal and crystalline properties. Moreover, the combustion and pyrolysis behaviors of PLA composites were investigated detailly. The results indicated that the introduction of DNPMI with DOPO and maleimide group in the molecular structure effectively improved the fire safety of PLA composites accompanied with good crystallization ability and transparency properties. With the addition of 7.5 wt% DNPMI, PLA composites reached to UL-94 V-0 grade with a high LOI value of 30.8 %. The excellent flame retardancy performance of PLA/ DNPMI composite materials is mainly ascribed to the interplay of quenching and dilution effects in the gaseous phase. The maleimide, and phosphorus-containing radicals generated by the pyrolysis of DNPMI captured the chain radicals and the decomposed inert gases diluted the concentration of the combustion components of PLA. In addition, heat-resistant aromatic structures were generated by the reaction of maleimide radicals and reactive radicals from decomposition of PLA, thereby playing "cage effect" to inhibit the combustion process.

Abstract:In this work, a novel single macromolecular intumescent flame retardant (DT-M) was prepared by self-assembly of diethylenetriamine penta-(methylenephosphonic) acid with melamine, and modified layered double hydroxides (LDH) were also prepared by intercalating phytic acid into LDHs. The chemical structures of DT-M and phytic acid intercalated LDHs (PA–LDH) were fully characterized by different analytical instruments, and then were introduced into PLA by melt compounding to prepare a flame retardant biodegradable PLA composite. The fire performance evaluation of PLA composites by limiting oxygen index (LOI), vertical burning (UL-94) and cone calorimeter tests indicated that the introduction of 14% DT-M and 1% PA–LDH increased the LOI value from 19.4 to 38.9%, upgraded the UL-94 rating from no rating to V-0, and decreased the peak heat release rate from 812 to 301 kW m−2. The analysis for decomposition products of PLA composite and the observation of morphology of the char suggested that DT-M and PA–LDH took effects in both condensed phase through promoting char formation and gas phase through releasing inert gases.

Abstract:NP‐PCDL Flame Retardant Mechanism. Polylactic acid (PLA) is a new type of biodegradable material that has been applied in many fields such as extrusion, injection molding, film drawing, and spinning. In contrary, it does not have flame retardancy. In this paper, N‐PCDL was synthesized by amidation reaction between COOH of PCDL and NH2 of tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA), followed by an Atherton‐Todd reaction of unreacted NH2 at the other end of TEPA with PH of DOPO to prepare a novel lignin‐based flame retardant containing nitrogen and phosphorus (NP‐PCDL). The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT‐IR) and nuclear magnetic hydrogen spectroscopy (1H NMR) analysis results showed that proton peaks of CONH, PN, and NH appeared in the NP‐PCDL spectrum, while the characteristic absorption peak of PH bond disappeared in DOPO, the X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results showed that the degraded lignin consisted of elements C and O, while NP‐PCDL consisted of elements C, O, N and P. The above results indicated that NP‐PCDL was successfully prepared. NP‐PCDL accounted for 3% (mass percentage, the same below), 5% and 10% of PLA, then lignin based flame‐retardant PLA composites were prepared by internal mixing and injection molding. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that the residual carbon of PLA/3% NP‐PCDL, PLA/5% NP‐PCDL and PLA/10% NP‐PCDL at 800°C were higher than that of pure PLA, with the increase of 56.56%, 97.54%, and 301.64%, respectively; The analysis of SEM, XPS, and Raman showed that PLA/NP‐PCDL formed dense, regular and highly graphitized residual carbon with phosphorus nitrogen structure during the combustion process. At the same time, NH3, H2O and PO ̇ free radicals were released, which could dilute combustible gases, destroy free radical chain reaction, isolate combustible gases and heat, so as to play a flame‐retardant role.

Abstract:A hyperbranched and amorphous microsphere (PZM) was synthesized with the hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (HCCP) as the component unit. The PZM and ammonium polyphosphate (APP) as a synergistic flame retardant were incorporated into the poly(L-lactic acid) (PLA) to investigate the effects of the APP/PZM on the thermal stability, limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL-94 rating, combustion behavior, flame-retardant performance and crystallization behavior of the PLA. The PZM showed a much higher thermal stability and carbon residue than the HCCP, APP and 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl ether (ODA), but presented a lower initial degradation temperature. The PLA/10%APP/5%PZM exhibited the most excellent flame-retardant performance because it showed low total heat release, peak of heat release and total smoke release. By calculation, the PLA/10%APP/5%PZM presented the outstanding fire resistance. The PLA/10%APP/5%PZM formed a continuous, dense and relatively thicker char layer (which facilitated the isolation of the oxygen and heat flow, suppression of the smoke and prevention of the dripping) after the cone calorimeter (CONE) test, indicating that it showed a condensed-phase flame-retardant performance. In addition, the gas-phase flame retardance is a minor factor to enhance its flame-retardant effect. The crystallizability increased, and crystallization time shortened substantially for the PLA with loading of the 10%APP/5%PZM.Graphical abstract

Abstract:As a very promising biodegradable polymer, polylactic acid (PLA) has been applied in various fields. Unfortunately, the disadvantages of flammability and large amounts of molten droplets limit its application. In this work, we constructed a novel flame-retardant system by combining the as-prepared bio-based chitosan derivative (CS-TE) and aluminum hypophosphite (AP), and used it to improve the flame retardancy and anti-dripping property. When 3.75 wt% CS-TE and 11.25 wt% AP were incorporated into PLA, the PLA composite had a limiting oxygen index of 28.5 % and achieved a UL-94 V-0 rating as well as showed excellent anti-dripping behavior. Meanwhile, the peak heat release rate and total smoke production decreased by 52.3 % and 73.4 % respectively.
Combustion and Thermal Properties of Polylactide with an Effective Phosphate-Containing Flame-Retardant Oligomer

Abstract:A phosphate-polyether copolymer poly (polyethylene glycol spirocyclic pentaerythritol bisphosphate) (PPGPB) has been synthesized and its structure was characterized by Fourier transformed infrared spectrometry (FTIR) and H-1 nuclear magnetic resonance ((HNMR)-H-1). A series of polylactide (PLA)-based flame retardant composites containing PPGPB were prepared by melt blending. The combustion properties of PLA/PPGPB composites were evaluated through UL-94 tests and microscale combustion calorimetry (MCC) experiments. It is shown that PPGPB significantly improved the flame retardancy of PLA and only 5wt% additive allowed the composites to achieve UL-94 V-0. The possible flame retardance mechanism of PPGPB in PLA was substantiated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and in situ FTIR. In addition, thermogravimeric analysis (TGA) showed the weight loss rate was decreased by introduction of PPGPB, and it is found from the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results that PPGPB can facilitate the crystallization of PLA.
Construction of polylactic acid-based flame retardant composites by zinc oxide and bamboo carbon

Abstract:Polylactic acid (PLA) is often used in the preparation of environmentally friendly biodegradable polymer plastics, and how to improve the flame retardant performance of polylactic acid has been concerned by experts and scholars. Here, we provide a new idea, using bamboo activated carbon as the main material, and phytic acid, urea and Zn(NO3)2·6(H2O) as modifiers to produce a new type of carbon flame retardant. It has bamboo activated carbon as carbon source; second, it has P, N elements and metal oxides. The two synergistically play a flame retardant role on polylactic acid. The polylactic acid composite showed good thermal stability, from no grade optimization to V-0 in the UL-94 test, and the limiting oxygen index was also increased from 20.1 to 31.2%. The above tests show that bamboo activated carbon loaded with ZnO has a good flame retardant effect on polylactic acid.

Abstract:White pollution substantially impairs people's quality of life nowadays. Bio-based polymers that are environmentally friendly and biodegradable have garnered interest. Among them, polylactic acid (PLA) has attracted wide attention due to its excellent biodegradability, high transparency, and easy processing. However, its inherent flammability, low toughness, and poor compatibility with flame retardants severely limit its application scope. In this paper, a phytic acid-based flame retardant glycidyl methacrylate phytate (GPA) was prepared by epoxy ring-opening and phosphate transesterification. GPA was grafted onto PLA through free radical polymerization, and the introduction of GPA improved both the mechanical properties and flame retardancy of PLA. The LOI of PLA composite rose to 28% after adding a 6 wt% GPA. A reduction of 11.7% in the total heat release of the PLA-GPAX was observed in comparison to neat PLA, demonstrating that the prepared PLA composite exhibits high flame retardancy. Due to the improved dispersion and compatibility of GPA in the matrix after grafting onto PLA, the mechanical strength of PLA increased by 19.9%. This study provides a feasible method for improving the compatibility between flame retardants and bio-based polymers, achieving a mutually beneficial situation in flame retardancy and mechanical strength, and further expanding the application range of bio-based materials. A phytic acid based flame retardant modified by glycidyl methacrylate was prepared. This flame retardant is mainly through the gas phase and condensed phase flame retardant to play a flame retardant role.

Abstract:Piperazine pyrophosphate and aluminum diethylphosphinate exhibit synergistic flame retardant effects when combined with β‐cyclodextrin. The formation of P‐N‐C and P‐C‐N type flame retardants and the production of inert gases help create a dense carbon layer and inhibit combustion. This enhances the material's flame resistance by slowing heat transfer and increasing activation energy. Polylactic acid has good biodegradability and processability, but its flammability and serious droplet characteristics limit its development and application. Therefore, developing safer flame‐retardant PLA materials is crucial. This research develops a novel flame‐retardant polylactic acid (PLA) material blend, utilizing aluminum diethylphosphinate (AlPi), piperazine pyrophosphate (PAPP), and β‐cyclodextrin. Optimal synergy occurs at a 5:1 PAPP/β‐CD mass ratio with 4 wt.% AlPi. This combination significantly reduces the heat release peak from 294.89 to 144.21 kW·m−2 and generates non‐combustible residues. The sample forms a stable, uniform carbon layer during combustion due to hydrogen bond crosslinking and Lewis acid–base reactions. The activation energy (Eα) is raised from 264.99 to 281.08 kJ·mol−1 between 312 and 402°C. Thus, an AlPi‐PAPP‐β‐CD based P‐C‐N composite flame retardant is investigated, offering a promising research direction for developing fire‐safe polylactic acid materials. This research may yield valuable insights for diverse applications.

Abstract:A series of flame retarding biodegradable polylactic acid composites (FR-PLA) based on aluminum hypophosphite (AHP) and expanded graphite (EG) were prepared by the melt-compounding method. The effect of AHP and EG on the flame retardancy and thermal stability of PLA were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), UL-94 vertical burning test, limiting oxygen index, microscale combustion calorimetry and cone calorimeter testing. The gas products of PLA and FR-PLA composites were investigated by TG-IR technology. TGA results showed that the FR-PLA composites presented higher char residue and reduced mass loss rate than neat PLA. Significant improvement of flame retardancy of PLA/AHP/EG composites indicated an excellent synergistic effect between AHP and EG. Cone calorimeter tests gave clear evidence that the combination of AHP and EG resulted in a significant reduction of the heat release rate (HRR) and total heat release (THR). TG-IR revealed that the combination of AHP and EG resulted in significant decrease of gas products. The char residue of FR-PLA composites were also investigated by scanning electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared spectra spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Based on the analysis, possible flame retardant mechanism was discussed.
Combination of Corn Pith Fiber and Biobased Flame Retardant: A Novel Method toward Flame Retardancy, Thermal Stability, and Mechanical Properties of Polylactide

Abstract:Some crop by-products are considered to be promising materials for the development of novel biobased products for industrial applications. The flammability of these alternatives to conventional materials is a constraint to expanded applications. Polylactide (PLA) composites containing a combination of oxidized corn pith fiber (OCC) and a biobased flame retardant (PA-THAM) have been prepared via an in situ modification method. SEM/EDS, FTIR and TGA were performed to establish that PA-THAM was coated onto the surface of OCC. The mechanical properties, thermal stability and fire behavior of PLA-based biocomposites were investigated. The incorporation of 5 phr PA-THAM imparted biocomposite good interfacial adhesion and increased decomposition temperature at 10% mass loss by 50 °C. The flame retardant properties were also improved, as reflected by an increased LOI value, a UL-94 V-2 rating, reduction of PHRR, and increased formation of char residue. Therefore, the introduction of 5 phr PA-THAM can maintain a good balance between flame retardancy and mechanical properties of this PLA/OCC system.

Abstract:Highly-efficient biodegradable cellulose-based flame retardants have great potential to be developed as new generation of sustainable flame retardants. In this study, phenylphosphorylated microcrystal cellulose (PhPMCC) and phenylphosphorylaminated MCC (PhPNMCC) as novel biobased flame retardants were successfully synthesized by phosphorylation and phosphoryl amination modification, respectively. The limited oxygen index (LOI) of Poly(lactide) (PLA) biocomposite with a loading of 4 wt% PhPMCC increased to 27.0%, and PLA/4wt%PhPMCC passed UL-94 V-0 rating. The PhPMCC and PhPNMCC exhibited good flame retardancy and melt-dripping suppression on PLA, and the proposed flame-retardant mechanism of the PLA/PhPMCC biocomposites was mainly attributed to that the phosphorus-oxygen radicals inhibited the decomposition rate of macromolecular chains of PLA, and a stable residue containing polyphosphate and polyaromatic ring had a synergistic barrier effect on the condensed phase. The tensile and bending strengths of PLA/PhPNMCC biocomposites were superior to those of PLA/PhPMCC composites because the interfacial reaction between the amino groups of PhPNMCC and PLA matrix provided them good interfacial compatibility. The preparation of highly efficient cellulose-based flame retardants and fully biobased PLA composite promote the utilization of renewable biomaterials.

Abstract:Comprehensive performance comparison of different flame retardants in PLA. In this investigation, characterization and comparison of the flame retardant performance were conducted for polylactic acid (PLA)/fiber composites featuring the incorporation of different flame retardants (APP, PAPP, and DMH). Based on the results obtained from the Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI) test and cone calorimeter test, it is evident that the intumescent flame retardants (IFR) such as APP and PAPP exhibit better efficacy on improving flame retardancy than DMH. The LOI value of the APP/PLA/F and PAPP/PLA/F composite reaches 35.5% and 27.4%, higher than that of DMH/PLA/F (23.0%). The pk‐HRR of APP/PLA/F and PAPP/PLA/F decreases 27% and 39% compared with PLA/F while the char residue at 500°C was higher than that of DMH/PLA/F (0.3 wt%) with the value of 51.4 and 44.1 wt%. It should be mentioned that the impact strength and tensile strength of PLA/fiber composite incorporating APP surpasses that of PAPP/PLA/F, which is caused by good dispersibility of fabrics among the PLA matrix, coupled with the strengthened interfacial adhesion between the fibers and the polylactic acid matrix. In summary, APP/PLA/F shows the most overall performance. Highlights Properties of PLA/fiber composites with various fire retardants were compared. APP/PLA/F obtained the best overall property while DMH/PLA/F had the worst. APP endows composites with excellent flame retardancy and mechanical property. The LOI value of APP/PLA/F was 35.3%, highest among four composites. Adding APP to PLA/F led to an increase in tensile strength and impact strength.

Abstract:<p>To improve the flame retardancy of low‐density polyethylene (LDPE) and mechanical properties of LDPE composites, phenol‐formaldehyde aluminum diethylphosphinate microcapsules (PF@ADP) was prepared by in‐situ polymerization with phenol‐formaldehyde (PF) resin as the wall material and halogen‐free flame‐retardant aluminum diethylphosphinate (ADP) as the core material. The effects of PF@ADP on flame retardancy and mechanical properties of LDPE were investigated by methods of combustion experiments, mechanical analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and smoke density analysis. The results indicated that, compared with ADP/LDPE composites, the flame retardancy and mechanical properties of PF@ADP/LDPE were obviously improved. With the addition of 20 wt% PF@ADP (PF:ADP = 3:7), the limit oxygen index (LOI) of LDPE composites increased to 30.7% and UL‐94 reached V‐1 grade. The tensile strength and elongation at break reached 12.5 MPa and 431.2%, which was 20.2% and 23.1% higher than that of ADP/LDPE with the same addition. The addition of PF@ADP was beneficial to the smoke suppression of LDPE.</p>
