Abstract:Polylactic acid (PLA) has garnered global attention as a potential biomaterial thanks to its biodegradability and renewability. However, the drawbacks of its high flammability impede its broader application. In this work, two different types of all bio-based charring agents (named as CFU, CVA) were prepared in a green and environmentally friendly ethanol solvent by using chitosan derived from corn starch and sugarcane, as well as bio-based vanillin and furfural, as raw materials. The CFU (or CVA) in conjunction with ammonium polyphosphate (APP) were incorporated into PLA to prepare flame-retardant and high-performance composite materials. The addition of 3.75 wt% CFU (or CFA) and 11.25 wt% APP to PLA resulted in the attainment of the UL-94 V-0 rating, a nearly 28% of limiting oxygen index, as well as a decrease of ∼35% and ∼90% in total heat and smoke releases, respectively. Besides, the addition of mixed flame retardants significantly reduced the viscosity of PLA by an order of magnitude, which was greatly beneficial for processing and production. The mechanical performance testing results demonstrated an increase in the elongation at break and impact strength of PLA composites containing CFU (or CVA) and APP. Moreover, the heat resistance and crystallinity of the PLA composites were also improved.

Abstract:As a plastic that can be prepared from biomass resources, polylactic acid (PLA) has the characteristics of being degradable and renewable, and has shown great potential in replacing petroleum-based polymer materials. However, PLA material is flammable, the droplet phenomenon during combustion is still a disadvantage of PLA applications. In this research, a core–shell structure flame retardant was prepared based on polyacrylamide (PAM)/sodium alginate (SA) coated ammonium polyphosphate (APP) via layer-by-layer assembly using water as the assembly medium. The prepared core–shell flame retardant APP@PAM@SA-nDL (where “DL” is the PAM&SA double layer, and “n” represents 1-3DL) was molten compounded with PLA to improve its flame retardancy. APP@PAM@SA-nDL is added to PLA, which not only improves the flame retardancy of PLA composites, but also significantly improves the toughness, and the flame retardancy, flame retardant mechanism, mechanical performance and toughening mechanism of PLA composites were systematically studied. Among the core–shell flame retardants with different layers, the addition of APP@PAM@SA-3DL gives PLA composites excellent flame retardancy and tensile properties. Due to the formation of the cross-linked polymer network structure, 5% APP@PAM@SA-3DL can increase the elongation at break of PLA composites from 19.82 to 294.5%. In addition, 10% of APP@PAM@SA-3DL made the UL-94 of PLA composite materials reach V-0 level and increased the LOI from 19.7% (neat PLA) to 29.2%. The analysis of the carbon layer shows that the excellent flame-retardant performance of PLA composites can be attributed to the formation of a dense carbon layer during condensation and the dilution effect of P-containing free radicals, forming a flame-retardant mechanism with a condensed phase as the main component and a gas phase as a supplement. This high toughness flame-retardant PLA composite material has broad application prospects in the textile field.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:Bioderived flame retardants represent one class of the most promising sustainable additives for creating flame retardant polylactic acid (PLA) because of their marginal impact on the biodegradability of PLA. Ammonium polyphosphate (APP) has demonstrated high flame-retardant effectiveness in PLA but its flame-retardant efficiency remains unsatisfactory even if after modifications. Herein, we report the facile fabrication of core–shell bioderived flame retardants by using APP as the core, and the chitosan (CS)/alginate (AA) bilayer as the shell through self-assembly in aqueous solution. The resultant core–shell flame retardant, APP@CS@AA-nBL (where “BL” is a CS&AA bilayer and “n” denotes 1–3 BL), can endow PLA with improved flame retardancy without negatively affecting the thermal properties. The PLA containing 10 wt % APP@CS@AA-3BL shows the highest LOI value (30.6%) and achieves a UL94 V-0 rating in the vertical burning test. Meanwhile, the cone calorimetry results demonstrate that the peak of the heat release rate and total heat release are respectively decreased by 23% and 11% relative to the PLA bulk. Such enhanced flame retardancy is mainly due to the excellent char-forming capability of APP@CS@AA. Moreover, the inclusion of 10 wt % APP@CS@AA-3BL gives rise to ∼23% increase in the impact strength of PLA possibly because of their interfacial hydrogen-bonding interactions. This work provides a facile and green strategy for preparing highly effective bioderived flame retardants for PLA and thus is expected to expand the practical applications in industry.

Abstract:Polylactic acid (PLA) is a widely used biodegradable material, but its inadequate fire protection properties have the quest for developing environmentally friendly, effective, and multifunctional flame retardants to enhance PLA's flame retardancy. Here, designed and synthesized bio-based double-shell nickel–cobalt-based flame retardant (NiCo-BH@BPA@CS) as a green flame retardant through layer-by-layer assembly using NiCo-based bimetallic hydroxide (NiCo-BH), benzenephosphonic acid (BPA) and chitosan (CS). Subsequently, this multifunctional flame retardant (NiCo-BH@BPA@CS) was melted into the PLA matrix as flame retardant additions to prepare PLA/NiCo-BH@BPA@CS composites. Benefiting from the organic modification, NiCo-BH@BPA@CS presented excellent dispersion in the PLA matrix. The incorporation of NiCo-BH@BPA@CS simultaneously enhanced the fire safety, thermal stability and charring capability of the PLA composites. With the addition of 20 wt% NiCo-BH@BPA@CS, the LOI value of NiCo-BH@BPA@CS composite reached 32.5% and passed the UL-94 V-0 class. After cone calorimetric testing, it was found that the PHRR, THR and FGI values of PLA/NiCo-BH@BPA@CS composites were reduced by 19.9%, 23.9% and 22.4%, respectively, compared to PLA/NiCo-BH. More importantly, the residual char of PLA/NiCo-BH@BPA@CS exhibited a significantly reduced presence of large cracks compared to that of PLA/NiCo-BH and indicated a more densely formed residual char. This was mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of transition metal nickel cobalt, P in benzenephosphonic acid and N in chitosan, which can promote the compactness of char layers with fine microstructure formed in the decomposition process of PLA/NiCo-BH@BPA@CS composites. This work provides an environment-friendly layer-by-layer assembly modification strategy for enhancing the dispersion of and flame retardant efficiency of NiCo-based flame retardant which opens a door for broad applications of PLA.

Abstract:An intumescent flame retardant spirocyclic pentaerythritol bisphosphorate disphosphoryl melamine (SPDPM) has been synthesized and its structure was characterized by Fourier transformed infrared spectrometry (FTIR), 1H and 31P nuclear magnetic resonances (NMR). A series of polylactide (PLA)-based flame retardant composites containing SPDPM were prepared by melt blending method. The combustion properties of PLA/SPDPM composites were evaluated through UL-94, limiting oxygen index (LOI) tests and microscale combustion calorimetry (MCC) experiments. It is found that SPDPM integrating acid, char and gas sources significantly improved the flame retardancy and anti-dripping performance of PLA. When 25wt% flame retardant was added, the composites achieved UL-94 V0, and the LOI value was increased to 38. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that the weight loss rate of PLA was decreased by introduction of SPDPM. In addition, the thermal degradation process and possible flame retardant mechanism of PLA composites with SPDPM were analyzed by in situ FTIR.

Abstract:Incorporating bio-based flame retardants into polylactic acid (PLA) for improving its fire retarding performance has always been attractive to researchers worldwide, while the synthesis of bio-based flame retardants always involves organic solvents. The drawbacks of bio-based flame retardants are also nonignorable, such as strong hydrophilicity, aggregation, and deterioration of the mechanical properties of PLA. Here, the bio-based flame retardant APP@CS@Si was assembled in the water phase with ammonium polyphosphates (APP) and chitosan (CS) and carboxylated silicone oil (Si-COOH/Si). The results showed that the Si-COOH shell not only decreased the hydrophilicity of the flame retardant but also had superior fire retardancy due to its improved char formation ability. Only 2 wt % APP@CS@Si can endow PLA with satisfying flame retardancy such as the UL-94 V-0 grade. Higher values of the fire propagation index (0.150) and flame retardancy index (1.33) were also achieved by PLA with 4 wt % APP@CS@Si compared with those of PLA with the same loading of APP@CS. Interestingly, the total smoke release amount (TSR) of PLA/4APP@CS@Si was 60% lower than that of PLA/4APP@CS, exhibiting its excellent smoke suppression ability. Moreover, Si-COOH could also be deemed as a soft shell to improve the toughness of PLA with increased impact strength and elongation at break of the PLA composite by 20 and 16%, respectively.

Abstract:Although mesoporous metals have been synthesized by electrochemical methods, the possible compositions have been limited to noble metals (e.g., palladium, platinum, gold) and their alloys. Herein we describe the first fabrication of continuously mesoporous Cu films using polymeric micelles as soft templates to control the growth of Cu under sophisticated electrochemical conditions. Uniformly sized mesopores are evenly distributed over the entire film, and the pore walls are composed of highly crystalized Cu.
Enhancement of flame retardant performance of bio-based polylactic acid composites with the incorporation of aluminum hypophosphite and expanded graphite

Abstract:A series of flame retarding biodegradable polylactic acid composites (FR-PLA) based on aluminum hypophosphite (AHP) and expanded graphite (EG) were prepared by the melt-compounding method. The effect of AHP and EG on the flame retardancy and thermal stability of PLA were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), UL-94 vertical burning test, limiting oxygen index, microscale combustion calorimetry and cone calorimeter testing. The gas products of PLA and FR-PLA composites were investigated by TG-IR technology. TGA results showed that the FR-PLA composites presented higher char residue and reduced mass loss rate than neat PLA. Significant improvement of flame retardancy of PLA/AHP/EG composites indicated an excellent synergistic effect between AHP and EG. Cone calorimeter tests gave clear evidence that the combination of AHP and EG resulted in a significant reduction of the heat release rate (HRR) and total heat release (THR). TG-IR revealed that the combination of AHP and EG resulted in significant decrease of gas products. The char residue of FR-PLA composites were also investigated by scanning electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared spectra spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Based on the analysis, possible flame retardant mechanism was discussed.
Highly efficiency flame-retardant and anti-dripping performance with dual effect of phosphaphenanthrene-benzimidazole for poly (lactic acid) film

Abstract:To improve the flammability and severe melt-dripping behavior of poly (lactic acid) (PLA), we designed and successfully synthesized a flame retardant structure (D-AB) based on phosphaphenanthrene and benzimidazole groups with hydrogen bonds and π-π stacking effect. Then, D-AB was blended with PLA in solution to prepare PLA/D-ABs films. The results showed that the incorporation of D-AB significantly enhances the viscoelasticity and complex viscosity of PLA due to the synergistic effect of hydrogen bonds and π-π stacking of D-AB. Meanwhile, with the good char formation ability of benzimidazole group, PLA/D-ABs exhibit excellent flame retardancy. With only a 5 wt % addition of D-AB, the PLA film with 0.15 mm thickness easily achieve UL-94 VTM-0 rating and high LOI value of 30.5%, while its melt-dripping behavior is improved. In addition, the flame retardant mechanism of D-AB in PLA is studied in detail. It is found that the release of PO· radicals and non-combustible gas in the gas phase, as well as the formation of a dense and intact carbon layers in the condensed phase contribute to the good flame retardant performance of D-AB. This work provides a method for designing highly efficient flame retardants for PLA.

Abstract:In this study, low-density polylactic acid (PLA) flame retardant foams were prepared using lignin fiber (LF), ammonium polyphosphate (APP), resorcinol bis(diphenyl phosphate) (RDP) and SiO2 aerogel. LF, RDP and SiO2 aerogel alone did not improved the flame retardancy of PLA composites; however, APP alone required a higher addition of amount to achieve a better flame retardancy. The synergistic effect between the four can improve the flame retardancy of PLA at a lower addition level. The intumescent flame retardant system composed of LF/APP/RDP/SiO2 aerogel can not only form a dense carbon layer on the surface of the material when burning to improve the flame retardant performance, but also improve the thermal stability of PLA, increase the degradation temperature and reduce the thermal weight loss rate. The final PLA flame retardant foam (density: 0.022 g/cm3) prepared by supercritical foaming can reach V-0 rating in UL-94 vertical combustion test, and the limiting oxygen index (LOI) can reach 30.5 %.
Enhancement of Flame Retardancy and Mechanical Properties of Polylactic Acid with a Biodegradable Fire-Retardant Filler System Based on Bamboo Charcoal

Abstract:A cooperative flame-retardant system based on natural intumescent-grafted bamboo charcoal (BC) and chitosan (CS) was developed for polylactic acid (PLA) with improved flame retardancy and minimal decline in strength properties. Chitosan (CS) as an adhesion promoter improved the interfacial compatibility between graft-modified bamboo charcoal (BC-m) and PLA leading to enhanced tensile properties by 11.11% and 8.42%, respectively for tensile strength and modulus. At 3 wt.% CS and 30 wt.% BC-m, the crystallinity of the composite increased to 38.92%, or 43 times that of pure PLA (0.9%). CS promotes the reorganization of the internal crystal structure. Thermogravimetric analysis showed significantly improved material retention of PLA composites in nitrogen and air atmosphere. Residue rate for 5 wt.% CS and 30 wt.% BC-m was 29.42% which is 55.1% higher than the theoretical value of 18.97%. Flammability tests (limiting oxygen index-LOI and UL-94) indicated significantly improved flame retardancy and evidence of cooperation between CS and BC-m, with calculated cooperative effectiveness index(Ce) >1. From CONE tests, the peak heat release rate (pHRR) and total heat release (THR) were reduced by 26.9% and 30.5%, respectively, for 3% CS + 20% BC-m in PLA compared with adding 20% BC-m alone. Analysis of carbon residue morphology, chemical elements and structure suggest CS and BC-m form a more stable char containing pyrophosphate. This char provides heat insulation to inhibit complete polymer pyrolysis, resulting in improved flame retardancy of PLA composites. Optimal mix may be recommended at 20% BC-m + 3% CS to balance compatibility, composite strength properties and flame retardance.

Abstract:Biocompatible and biodegradable polylactide (PLA) composites with supertough mechanical property and sufficient flame retardancy were fabricated by employing a facile approach involving reactive blending of PLA and ethylene-acrylic ester-glycidyl methacrylate terpolymer (EGMA), with the addition of aluminum hypophosphite (AHP) as an effective flame retardant. In consideration of the balance between mechanical property and flame retardancy, the optimal formula was taking a PLA/EGMA 80/20 blend (supertough STPLA) as the matrix and adding 20 wt % of AHP (relative to the mass of STPLA) as the flame retardant, coded as STPLA/20AHP. The mechanical property test showed that for STPLA/20AHP the elongation at break was increased by about 22 times and the notched Izod impact strength was enhanced by approximately 11 times as compared to those for neat PLA. The flame-retardant property test showed that for STPLA/20AHP the limiting oxygen index value reached 26.6% and the UL-94 V0 rating test was passed. Thermogravimetric analysis, microscale combustion calorimetry, and cone calorimeter were further applied to reveal the thermal stability and combustion behaviors of STPLA/xAHP, respectively, where x indicated the mass content of AHP in percentage. The phase separation morphology, dispersion of AHP particles in STPLA matrix, and fracture surfaces and char residues after flame burning were examined by phase contrast optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, respectively, which helped comprehend the results obtained from the mechanical property and flame retardancy tests. The supertough STPLA/xAHP, with sufficient flame retardancy as prepared in this work, could have a potential for engineering applications.

Abstract:Flame retardant polylactic acid (PLA) composites with poly(bis(phenoxy)-phosphazene) and expandable graphite are prepared by melt blending. Limiting oxygen index, UL-94 vertical burning test, cone calorimeter and thermogravimetric analysis are applied to characterize the flame retardant properties and thermal stability of PLA composites. This flame retardant system shows improved thermal stability, flame retardancy, synergy effect and anti-dripping performance. Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy are employed to investigate the chemical structure and composition of the residual char of flame retardant PLA composites after cone calorimeter tests. The residual char is composed of graphite and phosphorus-containing materials. The gaseous phase mechanism of the flame retardant system is investigated with thermogravimetry/Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The radical species, such as C6H5OP center dot, C6H5O center dot and PO2 center dot, are detected in the gaseous products of PLA composites. Thus, the flame retardant system exhibits both condensed and gas phase flame retardant action in the PLA composites.

Abstract:The flame-retardant and anti-dripping properties of biodegradable polylactide (PLA) materials during the combustion process were improved using intumescent flame-retardant (IFR) and different synergists. Organophilic montmorillonite (OMT), zinc borate (ZB), fumed silica (FS), tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) were chosen as the anti-dripping synergists for IFR in flame-retardant PLA. The flammability properties and thermal stability of PLA composites were investigated with UL-94, limiting oxygen index (LOI), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), melt flow index (MFI), etc. It is found that OMT and ZB are the best anti-dripping synergists for IFR PLA. The anti-dripping mechanisms of all the additives are discussed.

Abstract:A series of flame retardant polylactide composites (FR-PLA) based on aluminum hypophosphite (AHP) were facilely prepared by melt blending method. The thermal behavior, flammability, and mechanical properties of FR-PLA composites were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), the UL-94 vertical burning test, limiting oxygen index (LOI), cone calorimeter testing, microscale combustion calorimetry, mechanical testing, and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). TGA results showed that the FR-PLA composites presented higher char residue and reduced mass loss rate than neat PLA. The FR-PLA composite showed excellent fire resistance, from no rating of neat PLA to a V0 rating of FR-PLA containing 20 wt % aluminum hypophosphite in the UL-94 test. The microscale combustion calorimetry test showed that the heat release capacity, the peak of heat release and the total heat release of FR-PLA composites were significantly decreased with the increase of AHP content. The cone calorimeter test also confirmed that the addition of AHP resulted in a significant decrease in the peak heat release rate value of PLA/AHP composites compared with pure PLA. Additionally, the results from DSC and DMA tests indicated that the addition of AHP into polylactide significantly changed the crystallization behavior and storage modulus of polylactide. However, the addition of AHP decreases the tensile strength and elongation at break. The char after LOI testing was investigated by scanning electron microscopy and craterlike morphology was observed on the surface of the char. The thermal degradation process of FR-PLA composites was analyzed by real-time Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.
Combination of Corn Pith Fiber and Biobased Flame Retardant: A Novel Method toward Flame Retardancy, Thermal Stability, and Mechanical Properties of Polylactide

Abstract:Some crop by-products are considered to be promising materials for the development of novel biobased products for industrial applications. The flammability of these alternatives to conventional materials is a constraint to expanded applications. Polylactide (PLA) composites containing a combination of oxidized corn pith fiber (OCC) and a biobased flame retardant (PA-THAM) have been prepared via an in situ modification method. SEM/EDS, FTIR and TGA were performed to establish that PA-THAM was coated onto the surface of OCC. The mechanical properties, thermal stability and fire behavior of PLA-based biocomposites were investigated. The incorporation of 5 phr PA-THAM imparted biocomposite good interfacial adhesion and increased decomposition temperature at 10% mass loss by 50 °C. The flame retardant properties were also improved, as reflected by an increased LOI value, a UL-94 V-2 rating, reduction of PHRR, and increased formation of char residue. Therefore, the introduction of 5 phr PA-THAM can maintain a good balance between flame retardancy and mechanical properties of this PLA/OCC system.

Abstract:In this work, a novel intumescent flame retardant (IFR) system was fabricated by the introduction of chitin as a green charring agent, ammonium polyphosphate (APP) as the acid source, and melamine (MEL) as the gas source. The obtained chitin-based IFR was then incorporated into a polylactic acid (PLA) matrix using melt compounding. The fire resistance of PLA/chitin composites was investigated via the limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL-94 vertical burning, and cone calorimeter (CONE) tests. The results demonstrated that the combination of 10%APP, 5%chitin and 5%MEL could result in a 26.0% LOI, a V-0 rating after UL and a 51.2% reduction in the peak heat release rate during the CONE test. Based on the mechanism analysis from both the morphology and the chemical structure of the char, it was suggested that chitin was a promising candidate as a charring agent for chitin reacted with APP and MEL with the formation of an intumescent layer on the surface.

Abstract:In this work, a novel single macromolecular intumescent flame retardant (DT-M) was prepared by self-assembly of diethylenetriamine penta-(methylenephosphonic) acid with melamine, and modified layered double hydroxides (LDH) were also prepared by intercalating phytic acid into LDHs. The chemical structures of DT-M and phytic acid intercalated LDHs (PA–LDH) were fully characterized by different analytical instruments, and then were introduced into PLA by melt compounding to prepare a flame retardant biodegradable PLA composite. The fire performance evaluation of PLA composites by limiting oxygen index (LOI), vertical burning (UL-94) and cone calorimeter tests indicated that the introduction of 14% DT-M and 1% PA–LDH increased the LOI value from 19.4 to 38.9%, upgraded the UL-94 rating from no rating to V-0, and decreased the peak heat release rate from 812 to 301 kW m−2. The analysis for decomposition products of PLA composite and the observation of morphology of the char suggested that DT-M and PA–LDH took effects in both condensed phase through promoting char formation and gas phase through releasing inert gases.
