Abstract:Leo Breiman was a unique character. There will not be another like him. I consider it one of my great fortunes in life to have know and worked with him. Along with John Tukey, Leo had the greatest influence on shaping my approach to statistical problems. I did some of my best work collaborating with Leo, but more importantly, we both had great fun doing it. I look back on those years when we worked closely together with great fondness and regard them as among the happiest and most fruitful of my professional career.

Abstract:I first met Leo Breiman in 1979 at the beginning of his third career, Professor of Statistics at Berkeley. He obtained his PhD with Loéve at Berkeley in 1957. His first career was as a probabilist in the Mathematics Department at UCLA. After distinguished research, including the Shannon--Breiman--MacMillan Theorem and getting tenure, he decided that his real interest was in applied statistics, so he resigned his position at UCLA and set up as a consultant. Before doing so he produced two classic texts, Probability, now reprinted as a SIAM Classic in Applied Mathematics, and Statistics. Both books reflected his strong opinion that intuition and rigor must be combined. He expressed this in his probability book which he viewed as a combination of his learning the right hand of probability, rigor, from Loéve, and the left-hand, intuition, from David Blackwell.

Abstract:In 1994, I came to Berkeley and was fortunate to stay there three years, first as a postdoctoral researcher and then as Neyman Visiting Assistant Professor. For me, this period was a unique opportunity to see other aspects and learn many more things about statistics: the Department of Statistics at Berkeley was much bigger and hence broader than my home at ETH Z\"urich and I enjoyed very much that the science was perhaps a bit more speculative. As soon as I settled in the department, I tried to get in touch with the local faculty. Leo Breiman started a reading group on topics in machine learning and I didn't hesitate to participate together with other Ph.D. students. Leo spread a tremendous amount of enthusiasm, telling us about the vast opportunity we now had by taking advantage of computational power. Hearing his views and opinions and listening to his thoughts and ideas has been very exciting, stimulating and entertaining as well. This was my first occasion to get to know Leo. And there was, at least a bit, a vice-versa implication: now, Leo knew my name and who I am. Whenever we saw each other on the 4th floor in Evans Hall, I got a very gentle smile and "hello" from Leo. And in fact, this happened quite often: I often walked around while thinking about a problem, and it seemed to me, that Leo had a similar habit.

Abstract:Through the use of a system-building approach, an approach that includes finding common ground for the various philosophical paradigms within statistics, Erich L. Lehmann is responsible for much of the synthesis of classical statistical knowledge that developed from the Neyman--Pearson--Wald school. A biographical sketch and a brief summary of some of his many contributions are presented here. His complete bibliography is also included and the references present many other sources of information on his life and his work.

Abstract:Leo Kadanoff has worked in many fields of statistical mechanics. His contributions had an enormous impact. This holds in particular for critical phenomena, where he explained Widom's homogeneity laws by means of block-spin transformations and laid the basis for Wilson's renormalization group equation. I had the pleasure to work in his group for one year. A short historically account is given.

Empirical Studies of the Arts

Abstract:Empirical Studies of the Arts, Ahead of Print. Paul Locher passed away on 20 August 2024. Paul was an outstanding scientist and a central figure in the field of empirical aesthetics. He made important contributions to numerous areas including the study of symmetry, balance, facial attractiveness, museum behaviour, artwork composition and restoration, and aesthetics of food, but in particular to the study of eye movements in aesthetic appreciation of artworks. Indeed, his research on eye tracking is a touchstone for visual perception in empirical aesthetics. Here, a group of Paul's colleagues remember and celebrate him through a set of recollections that honour how he shaped their research and lives. It is hoped that this will offer a glimpse into the wonderful scholar and human being that Paul was, and why he will be sorely missed.

Abstract:on March 12, 2021, at the age of 72.He was hard working until the end even though he suffered from serious health issues for quite some time.Andy was one of the great applied mathematicians of our time.He was passionate in his research and an applied mathematician in the best possible way, by using sophisticated mathematics to advance our understanding of science and also when needed to make fundamental contributions to mathematical analysis, in particular, to the theory of partial differential equations.He advocated a philosophy for applied mathematics research that involves the interaction of math theory, asymptotic modeling, numerical modeling, and observed and experimental data, as summarized in Figure 2 and often displayed by Andy in his research presentations.Andy's legacy lives

Abstract:We note, with sadness, the passing of Dr. Robert Rosenthal, a longtime member of the Board of Consulting Editors of Social Behavior and Personality: an international journal . SBP’s Editor-in-Chief, Dr Robert A. C. Stewart was privileged to have Dr. Rosenthal as one of his professors while a graduate student at Harvard University in 1964–1965. He well remembers Dr. Rosenthal’s easy, inviting manner as a person. Having chosen to join our Board in the early years of the journal, Dr. Rosenthal was to remain, over the decades, a valued member of our advisory team until his death early this year.

Abstract:In a landmark paper published in 2001, Leo Breiman described the tense standoff between two cultures of data modeling: parametric statistical and algorithmic machine learning. The cultural division between these two statistical learning frameworks has been growing at a steady pace in recent years. What is the way forward? It has become blatantly obvious that this widening gap between "the two cultures" cannot be averted unless we find a way to blend them into a coherent whole. This article presents a solution by establishing a link between the two cultures. Through examples, we describe the challenges and potential gains of this new integrated statistical thinking.

Abstract:This article memorializes Peter M. Lewinsohn (1930-2022). Pete pioneered the development of a cognitive behavioral treatment of depressed individuals and research on its efficacy. With his graduate students, he created the Coping With Depression Course, which has been translated into many languages, adapted for older adults and adolescents, and used around the world. This approach is embodied in behavioral activation, a widely used, highly effective treatment of depression. He was a pioneer in translating cognitive behavioral mechanisms into bibliotherapy, including Control Your Depression, a self-help book still in print and used to guide treatment. Pete and colleagues also conducted one of the most comprehensive longitudinal studies on psychopathology, encompassing adolescence and early adulthood. Bridging Breiman's Brook: From Algorithmic Modeling to Statistical Learning

Abstract:In 2001, Leo Breiman wrote of a divide between "data modeling" and "algorithmic modeling" cultures. Twenty years later this division feels far more ephemeral, both in terms of assigning individuals to camps, and in terms of intellectual boundaries. We argue that this is largely due to the "data modelers" incorporating algorithmic methods into their toolbox, particularly driven by recent developments in the statistical understanding of Breiman's own Random Forest methods. While this can be simplistically described as "Breiman won", these same developments also expose the limitations of the prediction-first philosophy that he espoused, making careful statistical analysis all the more important. This paper outlines these exciting recent developments in the random forest literature which, in our view, occurred as a result of a necessary blending of the two ways of thinking Breiman originally described. We also ask what areas statistics and statisticians might currently overlook.

Abstract:The present paper gives an account for the general mathematical reader of the life and work of Martin Davis. Since two rather comprehensive autobiographical accounts and two long biographical interviews already exist, the present work focusses on Davis's scientific achievements, including work on computably enumerable sets, universal Turing machines, the hyperarithmetical hierarchy, neural networks, Hilbert's Tenth Problem, and automated reasoning.

Abstract:This introduction provides an overview to this special issue honoring the work and legacy of Jeremy D. Safran. Born of the Jeremy Safran Memorial Conference, held on April 2nd, 2023, this issue features a wide range of contributions from leaders in the field, former students, and early career professionals whose work engages and develops central ideas from Safran's work and reflects on his impact on their own clinical work and scholarship. Themes center around the three domains of Safran's major contributions: pedagogy; psychotherapy integration; and Buddhism, spirituality, and psychoanalysis. We observe among the contributions an experiential reconnecting with the deeply relational commitments of our friend and colleague.

Abstract:In this special issue, dedicated to Martin A. Conway, we have assembled a series of papers by individuals' whose work was affected by Martin's own research. We specifically solicited empirical papers that are somehow connected to the influence that Martin had on the authors' own work or papers that review or summarise a body of their work that was influenced by Martin and his work. Martin's research, predominantly work on autobiographical memory, has had an immense impact on our understanding of human memory and will continue to influence much of memory research in the future.

Abstract:Purposeful, intentional, supportive, influential, data driven and kind were how Dr Steven Noel Blair (4 July 1939–6 October 2023) lived his life. Previous tributes have already described his numerous accomplishments, awards and publications, but few have spoken about the full spectrum of his personal life, professional career, and service efforts towards physical activity and public health. He not only advocated for healthier living, but, true to his principles (and the data), he lived it daily. In the quiet spaces of a humble work spreadsheet, where he meticulously tracked his time and effort on projects, service commitments and administration, he also tracked his physical activity for decades weaving a personal narrative into the fabric of scientific inquiry. This was more than a numerical record; it was a testament to his dedication. The records start with tracking his daily miles run and strength training, then transitioning to tracking his daily steps...

Leo Eitinger MD: tribute to a Holocaust survivor, humane physician and friend of mankind

Abstract:Born in Czechoslovakia, psychiatrist Leo Eitinger (1912-1996) became internationally recognized for research on his fellow concentration camp inmates. He graduated as an MD in 1937, but being Jewish was prohibited from practicing as a doctor. When the Nazis occupied the area he was forced to flee to Norway, where in 1940 he was again deprived of his right to practice medicine. In 1942 he was arrested and deported to Auschwitz. There, as a physician inmate, he was able to help and in many cases save his fellow prisoners, not only with his medical skills but by falsifying prisoners' documents and hiding them from their Nazi captors. One of his patients was Elie Wiesel. Eitinger survived the camps but was forced to join a "death march." After the war he resumed medical practice in Norway, specializing in psychiatry. With his personal experience and knowledge of the suffering of camp survivors, he dedicated his life to studying the psychological effects of traumatic stress in different groups. Eitinger's academic contributions were crucial in the development of this area of research--namely, the effects of excessive stress, laying the foundations for the definition of post-traumatic stress disorder and the post-concentration camp syndrome, thus facilitating recognition of the medical and psychological post-war conditions of the survivors and their resultant disability pensions.

Abstract:While religion constituted one of the main topics of interest for early social scientists, faith traditions have silently slipped from this central role. When religion now appears in psychological research, it is usually relegated to the position of either the object of psychological investigation (which psychology purports to "explain") or a static piece in the empirical puzzle (as one variable among many when explaining clinical or social outcomes). In either case, religion is generally no longer seen as an equal partner to the social sciences in our attempts to better understand of the human condition. However, there are and have been voices within psychology that see this as unnecessarily myopic. James Jackson Putnam (1846-1918), an early supporter of the emerging field of psychoanalysis, advocated that psychology take seriously philosophy, metaphysics, and religion. Putnam's objections to the narrowing of our view of human life in the spirit of scientism fell largely on deaf ears, and his call for psychology to include that which lies beyond the walls of empirical naturalism and reductionism remains relevant today. In as far as theoretical innovation in psychology is more of a creative recognition than true scientific discovery, philosophy and religion constitute tremendously rich, and unfortunately underappreciated, fonts of inspiration. Putnam saw in religion the "dim recognition" of "the creative spirit of the universe." We briefly reflect on the example of obsessive-compulsive disorder and the much older religious concept of scruples, including approaches to mindfulness. This example is suggestive of the richness of psychological insights to be found in religion.
