Abstract:In this article we call a sequence $(a_n)_n$ of elements of a metric space nearly computably Cauchy if for every strictly increasing computable function $r:\mathbb{N}\to\mathbb{N}$ the sequence $(d(a_{r(n+1)},a_{r(n)}))_n$ converges computably to $0$. We show that there exists a strictly increasing sequence of rational numbers that is nearly computably Cauchy and unbounded. Then we call a real number $\alpha$ nearly computable if there exists a computable sequence $(a_n)_n$ of rational numbers that converges to $\alpha$ and is nearly computably Cauchy. It is clear that every computable real number is nearly computable, and it follows from a result by Downey and LaForte (2002) that there exists a nearly computable and left-computable number that is not computable. We observe that the set of nearly computable real numbers is a real closed field and closed under computable real functions with open domain, but not closed under arbitrary computable real functions. Among other things we strengthen results by Hoyrup (2017) and by Stephan and Wu (2005) by showing that any nearly computable real number that is not computable is weakly $1$-generic (and, therefore, hyperimmune and not Martin-Löf random) and strongly Kurtz random (and, therefore, not $K$-trivial), and we strengthen a result by Downey and LaForte (2002) by showing that no promptly simple set can be Turing reducible to a nearly computable real number.

Abstract:Classically, the theories of computation and computational complexity deal with discrete problems, for example over the integers, about graphs, etc.. On the other hand, most computational problems that arise in numerical analysis and scientific computation, in optimization theory and more recently in robotics and computational geometry have as natural domains the reals, or complex numbers. A variety of ad hoc methods and models have been employed to analyze complexity issues in this realm, but unlike the classical case, a natural and invariant theory has not yet emerged. One would like to develop theoretical foundations for a theory of computational complexity for numerical analysis and scientific computation that might embody some of the naturalness and strengths of the classical theory.

Abstract:There are two incompatible Coq libraries that have a theory of the real numbers; the Coq standard library gives an axiomatic treatment of classical real numbers, while the CoRN library from Nijmegen defines constructively valid real numbers. Unfortunately, this means results about one structure cannot easily be used in the other structure. We present a way interfacing these two libraries by showing that their real number structures are isomorphic assuming the classical axioms already present in the standard library reals. This allows us to use O'Connor's decision procedure for solving ground inequalities present in CoRN to solve inequalities about the reals from the Coq standard library, and it allows theorems from the Coq standard library to apply to problem about the CoRN reals.

Formalizing Hyperspaces and Operations on Subsets of Polish spaces over Abstract Exact Real Numbers

Abstract:Building on our prior work on axiomatization of exact real computation by formalizing nondeterministic first-order partial computations over real and complex numbers in a constructive dependent type theory, we present a framework for certified computation on hyperspaces of subsets by formalizing various higher-order data types and operations. We first define open, closed, compact and overt subsets for generic spaces in an abstract topological way that allows short and elegant proofs with computational content coinciding with standard definitions in computable analysis and constructive mathematics. From these proofs we can extract programs for testing inclusion, overlapping of sets, et cetera. To enhance the efficiency of the extracted programs, we then focus on Polish spaces, where we give more efficient encodings based on metric properties of the space. As various computational properties depend on the continuity of the encoding functions, we introduce a nondeterministic version of a continuity principle which is natural in our formalization and valid under the standard type-2 realizability interpretation. Using this principle we further derive the computational equivalence between the generic and the metric encodings. Our theory is fully implemented in the Coq proof assistant. From proofs in this Coq formalization, we can extract certified programs for error-free operations on subsets. As an application, we provide a function that constructs fractals in Euclidean space, such as the Sierpinski triangle, from iterated function systems using the limit operation. The resulting programs can be used to draw such fractals up to any desired resolution.

Abstract:We survey a collection of proofs towards equality, inequality, or independence of the relation of P to NP. Since the problem has attracted much attention from experts, amateurs, and in-betweens, this work is intended as a pointer into directions to enable a "self-assessment" of ideas laid out by people interested in the problem. To this end, we identify the most popular approaches to proving equality, inequality, or independence. Since the latter category appears to be without any attempts to follow the necessary proof strategies, we devote a Section to an intuitive outline of how independence proofs would work. In the other cases of proving equality or inequality, known barriers like (affine) relativization, algebrization, and others are to be avoided. The most important and powerful technique available in this regard is a formalization of arguments in automated proof assistants. This allows an objective self-check of a proof before presenting it to the scientific community.

Abstract:We describe a computing method of the computable (or constructive) real numbers based on analysis of expressions. This method take precision estimate into account in order to get a better algorithm than Menissier-Morain's method, which is also based on the representation of constructive reals. We solve two problems which appear in exact real arithmetic based on the representation of constructive reals. First, by balancing every item's precision in the expression, we can avoid unnecessary precision growth. Second, by distributing different weights to different operations, we can make sure that complex operations do not waste much time when to compute the whole expression. In these ways, we finally get a more efficient and proper method than prior implementations.

Abstract:Computations on a computer with a floating point arithmetic are always approximate. Conversely, computations with the rational arithmetic (in a computer algebra system, for example) are always absolutely exact and reproducible both on other computers and (theoretically) by hand. Consequently, these computations can be demonstrative in a sense that a proof obtained with their help is no different from a traditional one (computer assisted proof). However, usually such computations are impossible in a sufficiently complicated problem due to limitations on resources of memory and time. We propose a mechanism of rounding off rational numbers in computations with rational arithmetic, which solves this problem (of resources), i.e., computations can still be demonstrative but do not require unbounded resources. We give some examples of implementation of standard numerical algorithms with this arithmetic. The results have applications to analytical number theory.

Abstract:Open sets are central to mathematics, especially analysis and topology, in ways few notions are. In most, if not all, computational approaches to mathematics, open sets are only studied indirectly via their 'codes' or 'representations'. In this paper, we study how hard it is to compute, given an arbitrary open set of reals, the most common representation, i.e. a countable set of open intervals. We work in Kleene's higher-order computability theory, which was historically based on the S1-S9 schemes and which now has an intuitive lambda calculus formulation due to the authors. We establish many computational equivalences between on one hand the 'structure' functional that converts open sets to the aforementioned representation, and on the other hand functionals arising from mainstream mathematics, like basic properties of semi-continuous functions, the Urysohn lemma, and the Tietze extension theorem. We also compare these functionals to known operations on regulated and bounded variation functions, and the Lebesgue measure restricted to closed sets. We obtain a number of natural computational equivalences for the latter involving theorems from mainstream mathematics.

Abstract:Proof assistant software has recently been used to verify proofs of major theorems, yet even the libraries of some of the most prominent proof assistants lack much of undergraduate mathematics. In particular, the Agda proof assistant has no formalization of the real numbers and their arithmetic. In this thesis, I present my implementation of Errett Bishop's constructive real numbers in Agda, including their arithmetic, ordering, and fundamental results, such as uncountability and Cauchy completeness. We will also survey the basic concepts of constructive analysis and the Agda proof assistant.

Abstract:We show how to extract a monotonic learning algorithm from a classical proof of a geometric statement by interpreting the proof by means of interactive realizability, a realizability sematics for classical logic. The statement is about the existence of a convex angle including a finite collections of points in the real plane and it is related to the existence of a convex hull. We define real numbers as Cauchy sequences of rational numbers, therefore equality and ordering are not decidable. While the proof looks superficially constructive, it employs classical reasoning to handle undecidable comparisons between real numbers, making the underlying algorithm non-effective. The interactive realizability interpretation transforms the non-effective linear algorithm described by the proof into an effective one that uses backtracking to learn from its mistakes. The effective algorithm exhibits a "smart" behavior, performing comparisons only up to the precision required to prove the final statement. This behavior is not explicitly planned but arises from the interactive interpretation of comparisons between Cauchy sequences.

On Productiveness and Complexity in Computable Analysis Through Rice-Style Theorems for Real Functions

Abstract:This paper investigates the complexity of real functions through proof techniques inspired by formal language theory. Productiveness, which is a stronger form of non-recursive enumerability, is employed to analyze the complexity of various problems related to real functions. Our work provides a deep reexamination of Hilbert's tenth problem and the equivalence to the identically 0 function problem, extending the undecidability results of these problems into the realm of productiveness. Additionally, we study the complexity of the equivalence to the identically 0 function problem over different domains. We then construct highly efficient many-one reductions to establish Rice-style theorems for the study of real functions. Specifically, we show that many predicates, including those related to continuity, differentiability, uniform continuity, right and left differentiability, semi-differentiability, and continuous differentiability, are as hard as the equivalence to the identically 0 function problem. Due to their high efficiency, these reductions preserve nearly any level of complexity, allowing us to address both complexity and productiveness results simultaneously. By demonstrating these results, which highlight a more nuanced and potentially more intriguing aspect of real function theory, we provide new insights into how various properties of real functions can be analyzed.

Abstract:In recent decades, a growing number of discoveries in fields of mathematics have been assisted by computer algorithms, primarily for exploring large parameter spaces that humans would take too long to investigate. As computers and algorithms become more powerful, an intriguing possibility arises - the interplay between human intuition and computer algorithms can lead to discoveries of novel mathematical concepts that would otherwise remain elusive. To realize this perspective, we have developed a massively parallel computer algorithm that discovers an unprecedented number of continued fraction formulas for fundamental mathematical constants. The sheer number of formulas discovered by the algorithm unveils a novel mathematical structure that we call the conservative matrix field. Such matrix fields (1) unify thousands of existing formulas, (2) generate infinitely many new formulas, and most importantly, (3) lead to unexpected relations between different mathematical constants, including multiple integer values of the Riemann zeta function. Conservative matrix fields also enable new mathematical proofs of irrationality. In particular, we can use them to generalize the celebrated proof by Apéry for the irrationality of $\zeta(3)$. Utilizing thousands of personal computers worldwide, our computer-supported research strategy demonstrates the power of experimental mathematics, highlighting the prospects of large-scale computational approaches to tackle longstanding open problems and discover unexpected connections across diverse fields of science.

Computer-Assisted Verification of Four Interval Arithmetic Operators

Abstract:Interval arithmetic libraries provide the four elementary arithmetic operators for operand intervals bounded by floating-point numbers. Actual implementations need to make a large case analysis that considers, e.g., magnitude relations between all pairs of argument bounds, positional relations between the arguments and zero, and handling of the special values, infinities and NaN. Their correctness is not obvious as they are implemented by human hands, which comes to be critical for the reliability. This work provides a mechanically-verified interval arithmetic library. For this purpose, we utilize the Why3 platform equipped with a specification language for annotated programs and back-end theorem provers. We conduct several proof tasks for each of three properties of the target code: validity, soundness, and tightness; zero division exception handling is also verified for the division code. To accomplish the proof, we propose several techniques for specification/verification. First, we specify additional lemmas that support deductions made by back-end SMT solvers, which enable to discharge proof obligations in floating-point arithmetic containing nonlinear terms. Second, we examine the annotation of tightness, which requires to assume that a computation may result in NaN; we propose specific extremum operators for this purpose. In the experiments, applying the techniques in conjunction with the Alt-Ergo SMT solver and the Coq proof assistant proved the entire code.

Certifying zeros of polynomial systems using interval arithmetic

Abstract:We establish interval arithmetic as a practical tool for certification in numerical algebraic geometry. Our software HomotopyContinuation.jl now has a built-in function certify, which proves the correctness of an isolated nonsingular solution to a square system of polynomial equations. The implementation rests on Krawczyk's method. We demonstrate that it dramatically outperforms earlier approaches to certification. We see this contribution as powerful new tool in numerical algebraic geometry, that can make certification the default and not just an option.

Abstract:A real number is called left-computable if there exists a computable increasing sequence of rational numbers converging to it. In this article we are investigating a proper subset of the left-computable numbers. We say that a real number $x$ is reordered computable if there exist a computable function $f \colon \mathbb{N} \to \mathbb{N}$ with $\sum_{k=0}^{\infty} 2^{-f(k)} = x$ and a bijective function $\sigma \colon \mathbb{N} \to \mathbb{N}$ such that the rearranged series $\sum_{k=0}^{\infty} 2^{-f(\sigma(k))}$ converges computably. In this article we will give some examples and counterexamples for reordered computable numbers and we will show that these numbers are closed under addition, multiplication and the Solovay reduction. Finally, we will also present a density theorem for reordered computable numbers.

Abstract:Existing computer programs called proof assistants can verify the correctness of mathematical proofs but their specialized proof languages present a barrier to entry for many mathematicians. Large language models have the potential to lower this barrier, enabling mathematicians to interact with proof assistants in a more familiar vernacular. Among other advantages, this may allow mathematicians to explore radically new kinds of mathematics using an LLM-powered proof assistant to train their intuitions as well as ensure their arguments are correct. Existing proof assistants have already played this role for fields such as homotopy type theory.

Abstract:Cauchy reals can be defined as a quotient of Cauchy sequences of rationals. The limit of a Cauchy sequence of Cauchy reals is defined through lifting it to a sequence of Cauchy sequences of rationals. This lifting requires the axiom of countable choice or excluded middle, neither of which is available in homotopy type theory. To address this, the Univalent Foundations Program uses a higher inductive-inductive type to define the Cauchy reals as the free Cauchy complete metric space generated by the rationals. We generalize this construction to define the free Cauchy complete metric space generated by an arbitrary metric space. This forms a monad in the category of metric spaces with Lipschitz functions. When applied to the rationals it defines the Cauchy reals. Finally, we can use Altenkirch and Danielson (2016)'s partiality monad to define a semi-decision procedure comparing a real number and a rational number. The entire construction has been formalized in the Coq proof assistant.
