Abstract:. A new algorithm for real root isolation of univariate polynomials is proposed, which is mainly based on exact interval arithmetic and bisection method. Although exact interval arithmetic is usually supposed to be inefficient, our algorithm is surprisingly fast because the termination condition of our algorithm is different from those of existing algorithms which are mostly based on Descartes’ rule of signs or Vincent’s theorem and we decrease the times of Taylor shifts in some cases. We test our algorithm on a large number of examples from the literature and report the performance.

Abstract:Computing the intersection between two parametric surfaces (SSI) is one of the most fundamental problems in geometric and solid modeling. Maintaining the SSI topology is critical to its computation robustness. We propose a topology-driven hybrid symbolic-numeric framework to approximate rational parametric surface-surface intersection (SSI) based on a concept of interval algebraic topology analysis (IATA), which configures within a 4D interval box the SSI topology. We map the SSI topology to an algebraic system's solutions within the framework, classify and enumerate all topological cases as a mixture of four fundamental cases (or their specific sub-cases). Various complicated topological situations are covered, such as cusp points or curves, tangent points (isolated or not) or curves, tiny loops, self-intersections, or their mixtures. The theoretical formulation is also implemented numerically using advanced real solution isolation techniques, and computed within a topology-driven framework which maximally utilizes the advantages of the topology maintenance of algebraic analysis, the robustness of iterative subdivision, and the efficiency of forward marching. The approach demonstrates improved robustness under benchmark topological cases when compared with available open-source and commercial solutions, including IRIT, SISL, and Parasolid.

Abstract:Existing algorithms for isolating real solutions of zero-dimensional polynomial systems do not compute the multiplicities of the solutions. In this paper, we define in a natural way the multiplicity of solutions of zero-dimensional triangular polynomial systems and prove that our definition is equivalent to the classical definition of local (intersection) multiplicity. Then we present an effective and complete algorithm for isolating real solutions with multiplicities of zero-dimensional triangular polynomial systems using our definition. The algorithm is based on interval arithmetic and square-free factorization of polynomials with real algebraic coefficients. The computational results on some examples from the literature are presented.

Abstract:A new algorithm for real root isolation of zero-dimensional nonsingular square polynomial systems based on hybrid computation is presented in this paper. First, approximate the (complex) roots of the given polynomial equations via homotopy continuation method. Then, for each approximate root, an initial box relying on the Kantorovich theorem is constructed, which contains the corresponding accurate root. Finally, the Krawczyk interval iteration with interval arithmetic is applied to the initial boxes so as to check whether or not the corresponding approximate roots are real and to obtain the real root isolation boxes. Moreover, an empirical construction of initial box is provided for speeding-up the computation in practice. Our experiments on many benchmarks show that the new hybrid method is very efficient. The method can find all real roots of any given zero-dimensional nonsingular square polynomial systems provided that the homotopy continuation method can find all complex roots of the equations.

Abstract:We present a complete and practical algorithm which can determine the number of distinct real solutions of a given polynomial system of equations and inequalities with integer coefficients mechanically. Based on this algorithm, a program called nearsolve has been implemented in Maple. The algorithm and program have been successfully applied to many problems with various backgrounds and to automated discovering and proving for inequality-type theorems.
A Hybrid Procedure for Finding Real Points on a Real Algebraic Set

Abstract:Motivated by the idea of Shen, et al.'s work, which proposed a hybrid procedure for real root isolation of polynomial equations based on homotopy continuation methods and interval analysis, this paper presents a hybrid procedure to compute sample points on each connected component of a real algebraic set by combining a special homotopy method and interval analysis with a better estimate on initial intervals. For a real algebraic set given by a polynomial system, the new method first constructs a square polynomial system which represents the sample points, and then solve this system by a special homotopy continuation method introduced recently by Wang, et al. (2017). For each root returned by the homotopy continuation method, which is a complex approximation of some (complex/real) root of the polynomial system, interval analysis is used to verify whether it is an approximation of a real root and finally get real points on the given real algebraic set. A new estimate on initial intervals is presented which helps compute smaller initial intervals before performing interval iteration and thus saves computation. Experiments show that the new method works pretty well on tested examples.
Certifying zeros of polynomial systems using interval arithmetic

Abstract:We establish interval arithmetic as a practical tool for certification in numerical algebraic geometry. Our software HomotopyContinuation.jl now has a built-in function certify, which proves the correctness of an isolated nonsingular solution to a square system of polynomial equations. The implementation rests on Krawczyk's method. We demonstrate that it dramatically outperforms earlier approaches to certification. We see this contribution as powerful new tool in numerical algebraic geometry, that can make certification the default and not just an option.

Abstract:Isolating real roots of a square-free polynomial in a given interval is a fundamental problem in computational algebra. Subdivision based algorithms are a standard approach to solve this problem. For instance, Sturm's method, or various algorithms based on the Descartes's rule of signs. For the benchmark problem of isolating all the real roots of a polynomial of degree n and root separation σ, the size of the subdivision tree of most of these algorithms is bounded by O(log⁡1/σ) (assume σ<1). Moreover, it is known that this is optimal for subdivision algorithms that perform uniform subdivision, i.e., the width of the interval decreases by some constant. Recently Sagraloff (2012) and Sagraloff–Mehlhorn (2016) have developed algorithms for real root isolation that combine subdivision with Newton iteration to reduce the size of the subdivision tree to O(n(log⁡(nlog⁡1/σ))).We describe a subroutine that reduces the size of the subdivision tree of any subdivision algorithm for real root isolation. The subdivision tree size of our algorithm using predicates based on either the Descartes's rule of signs or Sturm sequences is bounded by O(nlog⁡n), which is close to the optimal value of O(n). The corresponding bound for the algorithm EVAL, which uses certain interval-arithmetic based predicates, is O(n2log⁡n). Our analysis differs in two key aspects from earlier approaches. First, we use the general technique of continuous amortization from Burr–Krahmer–Yap (2009), and extend it to handle non-uniform subdivisions; second, we use the geometry of clusters of roots instead of root bounds. The latter aspect enables us to derive a bound on the subdivision tree that is independent of the root separation σ. The number of Newton iterations is bounded by O(nlog⁡log⁡(1/σ)).

Abstract:In chemical engineering, solving systems of nonlinear algebraic equations is common Moreover, the variables arc usually limited to a valid physical domain; thus, finding all physical solutions is more meaningful. In this work, a novel strategy is proposed for finding all physical solutions within the variable bounds. First, Grobner basis method is introduced to triangularize the original system, which enabling the solution of univariate equations only. Next, a real root isolation algorithm is developed to compute the disjoint intervals such that each interval contains one solution. Finally, a numerical method with convergence monitoring is proposed to locate the solutions. Case studies show that the proposed method can accurately analyse the multi-solution features of the systems. All physical solutions can be found directly.

Abstract:In this paper, we address the problem of safety verification of interval hybrid systems in which the coefficients are intervals instead of explicit numbers. A hybrid symbolic-numeric method, based on SOS relaxation and interval arithmetic certification, is proposed to generate exact inequality invariants for safety verification of interval hybrid systems. As an application, an approach is provided to verify safety properties of non-polynomial hybrid systems. Experiments on the benchmark hybrid systems are given to illustrate the efficiency of our method.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a novel quantifier elimination method for conjunctions of linear real arithmetic constraints. Our algorithm is based on the Fourier-Motzkin variable elimination procedure, but by case splitting we are able to reduce the worst-case complexity from doubly to singly exponential. The adaption of the procedure for SMT solving has strong correspondence to the simplex algorithm, therefore we name it FMplex. Besides the theoretical foundations, we provide an experimental evaluation in the context of SMT solving.

Abstract:We formalize algebraic numbers in Isabelle/HOL. Our development serves as a verified implementation of algebraic operations on real and complex numbers. We moreover provide algorithms that can identify all the real or complex roots of rational polynomials, and two implementations to display algebraic numbers, an approximative version and an injective precise one. We obtain verified Haskell code for these operations via Isabelle's code generator. The development combines various existing formalizations such as matrices, Sturm's theorem, and polynomial factorization, and it includes new formalizations about bivariate polynomials, unique factorization domains, resultants and subresultants.

Abstract:Wu's elimination method is an important method for solving multivariate polynomial equations. In this paper, we apply interval arithmetic to Wu's method and convert the problem of solving polynomial equations into that of solving interval polynomial equations. Parallel results such as zero-decomposition theorem are obtained for interval polynomial equations. The advantages of the new approach are two-folds: First, the problem of the numerical instability arisen from floating-point arithmetic is largely overcome. Second, the low efficiency of the algorithm caused by large intermediate coefficients introduced by exact compaction is dramatically improved. Some examples are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:Real root finding of polynomial equations is a basic problem in computer algebra. This task is usually divided into two parts: isolation and refinement. In this paper, we propose two algorithms LZ1 and LZ2 to refine real roots of univariate polynomial equations. Our algorithms combine Newton's method and the secant method to bound the unique solution in an interval of a monotonic convex isolation (MCI) of a polynomial, and have quadratic and cubic convergence rates, respectively. To avoid the swell of coefficients and speed up the computation, we implement the two algorithms by using the floating-point interval method in Maple15 with the package intpakX. Experiments show that our methods are effective and much faster than the function RefineBox in the software Maple15 on benchmark polynomials.

Abstract:Computing upper bounds of the positive real roots of some polynomials is a key step of those real root isolation algorithms based on continued fraction expansion and Vincent's theorem. The authors give a new algorithm for computing an upper bound of positive roots in this paper. The complexity of the algorithm is O ( n log( u +1)) additions and multiplications where u is the optimal upper bound satisfying Theorem 3.1 of this paper and n is the degree of the polynomial. The method together with some tricks have been implemented as a software package logcf using C language. Experiments on many benchmarks show that logcf is competitive with RootIntervals of Mathematica and the function realroot of Maple averagely and it is much faster than existing open source real root solvers in many test cases.

Abstract:Real solution classification of parametric polynomial systems is a crucial problem in real quantifier elimination which interests Volker Weispfenning and others. In this paper, we present a stepwise refinement algorithm for real solution classifications of a class of parametric systems consisting of polynomial equations, inequalities and inequations. For an input system, the algorithm outputs the necessary and sufficient conditions (in terms of quantifier-free formulae) on the parameters for the system to have a given number of real solutions. Although the algorithm makes use of a pcad algorithm, it is different from any existing methods.

Abstract:Interval arithmetic libraries provide the four elementary arithmetic operators for operand intervals bounded by floating-point numbers. Actual implementations need to make a large case analysis that considers, e.g., magnitude relations between all pairs of argument bounds, positional relations between the arguments and zero, and handling of the special values, infinities and NaN. Their correctness is not obvious as they are implemented by human hands, which comes to be critical for the reliability. This work provides a mechanically-verified interval arithmetic library. For this purpose, we utilize the Why3 platform equipped with a specification language for annotated programs and back-end theorem provers. We conduct several proof tasks for each of three properties of the target code: validity, soundness, and tightness; zero division exception handling is also verified for the division code. To accomplish the proof, we propose several techniques for specification/verification. First, we specify additional lemmas that support deductions made by back-end SMT solvers, which enable to discharge proof obligations in floating-point arithmetic containing nonlinear terms. Second, we examine the annotation of tightness, which requires to assume that a computation may result in NaN; we propose specific extremum operators for this purpose. In the experiments, applying the techniques in conjunction with the Alt-Ergo SMT solver and the Coq proof assistant proved the entire code.
